Carrie Underwood is giving fans a glimpse of what's to come on her upcoming gospel album, My Savior, with the release of her version of the classic Christian hymn, "Softly and Tenderly" on Friday (February 12).
"Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling / Calling for you and for me," she sings over the piano-driven melody. "See on the portals He's waiting and watching / Watching for you and for me / Come home, come home / Ye who are weary come home / Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling / Calling, 'O sinner come home.'"
Underwood previously performed "Softly and Tenderly" in 2017 during the CMA Awards' "In Memoriam" segment, which honored members of the country music community who had died that year along with victims of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. The song was originally composed and written by Will L. Thompson in 1880 and has since been recorded by a number of artists including Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood, and more.
Take a listen to Underwood's new rendition of "Softly and Tenderly" below.
Underwood's rendition of the classic arrives just one day after the singer announced the complete track list for My Savior. The project, due out on March 26, will feature a total of 13 tracks including a collaboration with gospel singer CeCe Winans, on "Great Is Thy Faithfulness."
"For this album, I chose some of the familiar hymns I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember," Underwood wrote in a social media post announcing My Savior’s track list. "These songs set the foundation for me and I hope you love them as much as I do."
My Savior, produced by Underwood and David Garcia, serves as a companion to the singer's 2020 Christmas album, My Gift.
"It’s been such a blessing to make music like this, inspirational music that is near and dear to my heart," Underwood previously said in a statement. "These two albums have been on my musical bucket list since the beginning of my career and were planned long before the events of the past year, but somehow it feels like the perfect time to share these beloved songs with the world."
