While discussing his most iconic characters for GQ, Thirty Seconds to Mars' Jared Leto took a couple of minutes to explain that infamous gift he gave to co-star Margot Robbie.
Legend has it that Leto channeled his Suicide Squad Joker character when it came time to give Robbie (AKA Harley Quinn) a gift on set that was rumored to be a dead rat.
Well five years later, Leto has set the record straight on the gift and it's not as gross as the rumor.
“It's interesting how this stuff takes on a life of its own,” he said. “I never gave Margot Robbie a dead rat. That's not true.” he went on to say that he gave her vegan cinnamon buns along with a rat.
As for the rat, it was very much alive when Robbie got it as she explained in a 2016 interview.
“At first I thought this was disgusting. But then after that... I was like, 'I'm not going to kill him',” the actress explained. “So I ended up keeping him as a pet. I ended up getting him like a sweet little playpen, a slide, a hammock, and a leash.”
Along with settling that rumor, Leto opened up about the expectations of playing such an iconic role within a well-known franchise.
“There's a lot of pressure when you are a part of those big movies… when you're part of these giant movies they inherently come with maybe more responsibility,” he said. “Stepping into the Joker's shoes… it's this generation's version of taking on an infamous Shakespearean character: lots of people played the part before, lots of people played it in the future.”
You can catch Leto in a new Joker role in The Snyder Cut out on March 18 on HBO Max.
