Memphis Declares State Of Emergency Ahead Of New Winter Storm

Tennesseans should prepare to stay indoors for a little while longer. As much of the state remains under ice and snow, a new winter storm is expected to add to the icy conditions. According to FOX 13, the new front could bring freezing rain and sleet to the area as well as snow. The City of Memphis has already issued a State of Emergency ahead of the storm, saying the inclement weather has created a danger to public safety.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the majority of West Tennessee. The weather alert goes into effect at midnight Wednesday and will remain in place until 6 p.m. Thursday. According to the news outlet, light snow will begin to fall Wednesday morning and intensity throughout the day, followed by freezing rain throughout the night. Some areas around Shelby County could get up to 5 inches of snow.

Over the weekend, the majority of the country was hit with a large winter storm, sending temperatures dropping to below freezing and knocking out power for millions. At least two people died from weather-related causes, including one from Shelby County.

As the snow moved out, the icy conditions still continued to impact much of the state's infrastructure. Roadways and major Interstates remained frozen over, with low temps preventing the accumulation from melting and clearing the roads. Several wrecks involving tractor trailers were reported along Interstate 40 in Middle Tennessee on Tuesday morning as was a jackknifed semi on Interstate 24.
