A Sacramento woman opened up the envelope containing her Real ID to discover her driver's license photo features her wearing her face mask.
"I knew the picture was not going to be good because license pictures are never good, but I did not expect the picture to be with my mask on," Lesley Pilgrim told CBS13.
Pilgrim said she went into the Department of Motor Vehicles to take the photo and did not want to risk taking her face mask off without explicit instructions to do so. There was a three-hour line that day and she was worried she'd be sent to the back of it.
"They were very strict," said Pilgrim. "So I'm going to be very compliant, and listen, and follow every instruction, maybe to a fault."
According to Pilgrim, the DMV took two photos. One while she was still wearing her mask and one without it.
"I sign in and then I go home, and unfortunately he had used my picture with my mask on, and that's what showed up on my Real ID," said Pilgrim.
The DMV issued a statement about the incident saying, "In this instance, there was an oversight. The customer should have been asked to lower her mask for the photo. The DMV will investigate how this may have happened and remind staff of proper procedures."
A spokesperson for the DMV said Pilgrim's Real ID is technically valid even though her face is covered by the mask.
However, the DMV will be calling Pilgrim to take another photo free of charge.
"I think I settled on, you know what, we're all human," said Pilgrim. "...and even the people at the DMV are human and we all make mistakes."
