Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Make Decision On Prom

For the second year in a row, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have canceled prom. According to WCNC, CMS sent an email to staff citing their reasons for cancellation.

"Based on continued limitations to social gatherings, CMS has reached a decision that there will be no in-person prom this school year," the district said in a statement. "We recognize that this is a momentous occasion for students and we are working on providing additional opportunities for students to engage in social events safely."

While not surprising, the decision was still disappointing to many students hoping to experience a normal (or at least in-person) senior prom.

"It was kind of just 'add it to the list of things we've lost,'" said Daniel Binder, senior at Providence High School. "It's still losing prom. It's the rite of passage that you always hear about."

CMS isn't the first district in the region to cancel prom this year. Earlier this month, Cabarrus County Schools announced that "after careful consideration, thoughtful deliberation and due to continued COVID-19 restrictions," the district decided to cancel proms and other school dances this spring. However, like CMS, they hope to provide other experience for students, and especially seniors, that can better adhere to safety protocols.
