A second "pip" appeared in the Hays Bald Eagle nest shortly after the first eaglet of 2021 hatched early Tuesday (March 23) morning.

The first eaglet hatched just after 3:00 a.m., after being laid 39 days ago, according to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania via WPXI.

At around 7:30 a.m., when the mother eagle got up and rolled her other eggs, eagle watchers noticed a new "pip" in a second egg, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

According to the Audubon Society, a "pip" is a "visual sign of a hatch in progress," and usually occurs about 12-48 hours prior to the hatching.

In total, there were three eggs laid in the Hays bald eagles nest in 2021.

The Audubon Society said an adult bald eagle will now stay on the nest constantly to keep the eaglet(s) warm as the remaining egg continues to be incubated by the adults. The adult eagles will also bring food back to the nest to feed the eaglet, tearing it into small peaces and leaning over to feed the newborn.

The Audubon Society also confirmed the newborn eaglet weighs about 3.5 ounces.
