The San Diego City Attorney's Office announced that a Bay Terraces home is both a fire hazard and an example of excessive hoarding.
A court-appointed receiver has been designated to clean up and rehabilitate the home, reports FOX5.
The home "is piled high with trash both inside and out," and the receiver will also assist the home's resident in seeking counseling and other treatment to address the hoarding.
“It’s such a relief,” one neighbor told FOX5. “I have children, I have pets and it’s just been horrible living next to him. It wasn’t so bad 3 years ago, but it’s gotten so much worse.”
According to city officials, the home's condition violates both state and local laws. It's also been without running water for two years and its doors and windows are blocked by debris stacked to the ceiling.
“This clutter can easily become fuel for a fire that can rapidly spread and endanger the dwelling and surrounding community,” according to a declaration filed by San Diego Fire Marshal Douglas Perry. “In my professional opinion, that extreme hoarding is a fire hazard.”
FOX5 reports that paperwork shows the city has given the man several opportunities to clean up the house over the past three years.
