5 Movies You Didn't Know Were Filmed In Columbia

While Hollywood has become synonymous with movies, many productions are filmed on site around the country. In fact, several well-known movies have been filmed in Columbia. You may know that movies like Dear John and The Notebook were famously filmed around South Carolina, but plenty of other sets also found a home in the city.

Here are some of the movies you may not have known were filmed in Columbia.

Chattahoochee

Starring Gary Oldman, Dennis Hopper and Frances McDormand, this 1989 drama is based on the real life of a Korean War veteran whose negative experiences in a Florida hospital led to reforms in the state's mental health system. This movie filmed in several South Carolina cities including Columbia, per COLA Today.

Renaissance Man

This Danny DeVito-led comedy tells the story of a laid-off former advertising executive who lands a job teaching literacy classes at a U.S. Army training base. Scenes for the movie's "Fort McClane" were actually filmed at Fort Jackson.

A Guy Named Joe

An oldie but a goodie, A Guy Named Joe was one of the top grossing movies in 1944. The romantic fantasy drama is set during World War II and was filmed at several U.S. Army Air Force bases around the country, including the Air Base in Columbia, SciWay.net reports.

The Program

The Program (1993) stars Halle Berry, Omar Epps and James Caan, and follows the season of Eastern State University football team and the struggles they face. Principal photography was filmed around Columbia, and the University of South Carolina was featured as the team's home stadium.

Staying Together

This comedy-drama stars Sean Astin, Stockard Channing and Dermot Mulroney and tells the story of three brothers living at home with their parents and working at the family restaurant, until one decision changes everything. Per SciWay, scenes were filmed in Columbia and Ridgeway.
