Have you ever looked at a world record and asked yourself "why?"
There's plenty of strange Guinness World Records out there and and handful have either been broken by Kentucky residents or in the Bluegrass state. Below are some of the most off-the-wall records set intentionally or accidentally in Kentucky.
1. Largest Bubblegum Bubble Blown With The Nose
Joyce Samuels of Louisville blew the largest bubblegum bubble with her nose in 2000. The bubble's diameter was 11 inches. For anyone who wants to take on her record, the secret to Samuels' success is that "she pre-chews the gum for at least an hour to get the sugar out, before making it into a rectangle shape with her hands and putting it over her nostrils," according to the Guinness website.
2. Longest Abdomen Hair
Elaine Martin of Owensboro had a record breaking 6.6 inch long abdomen hair in 2013. Unfortunately, there's no photos of this mighty hair.
3. Woman With The Longest Beard
Janice Devere (aka Madam Devere) of Bracken County was the original bearded lady whose facial hair measured 14 inches long in 1884. She passed away in 1912 while on the road with a traveling circus, but she still holds the record for the longest beard ever grown by a woman.
4. Largest Water Balloon Fight
This must have been an incredibly fun record to break! The Christian Student Fellowship at the University of Kentucky gathered 8,957 in Lexington in 2011 to set the record for the largest water balloon fight. Around 175,141 were used during the fight.
5. Oldest Regular Blood Donor
Hundreds of people must owe their lives to Dale Faughn of Madisonville. In 2016, he became the oldest regular blood at the age of 90. Faughn is now 95 years old and still regularly donates. So far, he's given 280 pints of blood, according to Kentucky Today.
