Police are still actively searching for the suspect, and several nearby schools were also placed on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution." No other incidents have been reported at this time.
"Mount Tabor High School is on lockdown. There has been a shooting on school property," WSPD said in a tweet. The Winston-Salem school system issued a message to parents confirming that one student was getting treatment after being injured in a shooting and other students were being transported in stages to an area off campus.
"This is a large undertaking and because we are using our buses to do this, some other schools may see a delay in afternoon transportation and some students may arrive home later than normal," the statement read in part. "Thank you for your patience and understanding and again, all students and staff members at Mount Tabor are safe and being safely removed from campus."
Shortly before 2 p.m, parents were told to report to Harris Teeter to be reunited with their children after previously being instructed not to go to the school.
As of 2 p.m., no additional information has been released. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800.
