It's hard to believe that it's already been 20 years since the 9/11 attacks. The day remains in the American psyche, with those who were old enough to remember the day able to vividly detail exactly where they were and what they were doing at that moment. The event took the lives of 2,996 people, with many of those who had been near Ground Zero finding themselves to have lasting effects from the event.
It was the darkest day of American history. And yet, the day manages to bring together the American people even to this day. During the memorial at Ground Zero Saturday morning (September 11), Bruce Springsteen surprised the crowd with a performance of his song "I Will See You In My Dreams."
Yet, Springsteen isn't the only celebrity to remember 9/11.
Mariah Carey wrote on Instagram "On this anniversary of September 11, I find myself remembering the shock and anguish we all experienced with painfully deep sadness. Vivid images of the skyline I grew up loving so much, suddenly changed forever. Still astonished by how many innocent people were lost in an instant.. gone forever but never to be forgotten."
Ciara also shared a photo of New York City lit up at night, the statue of liberty glowing as beams of light stretch up from where the Twin Towers had been. "Never Forgetting This Day. Always remembering the sacrifice," she shared.
Luke Combs reflected on what he was doing the moment the Twin Towers fell. "6th grade chorus class singing the national anthem," he said on Twitter. "That's where I was. If you were alive, you remember as well as I do. Today we remember all the Americans who lost their lives and the heroes who lost theirs trying to save anyone they could. Never Forget 9/11/01."
Mark Ronson had been on a flight with American Airlines that day, heading to Los Angeles from JFK. On his Instagram, he detailed how it felt to deplane, saying "I'll never forget the panic, shock, despair, and horror in the airport as people managed to call home and find out what was actually happening."
