The best part of Autumn is witnessing the foliage turn to beautiful shades of gold, orange, and red.

Leaves change color when they stop photosynthesis due to the change in temperature and daylight. The green chlorophyll fades and changes to other colors that had been hiding.

According to the 9NEWS weather team, fall colors peak at different times throughout the state of Colorado.

On average, here are the best times to look out for fall foliage in the following areas:

  • Denver: September 18 - 29
  • Steamboat Springs: September 15 - 25
  • Aspen: September 22 - October 3
  • Pueblo: October 1 - 10
  • Ouray: September 25 - October 7
  • Pagosa Springs: October 8 - 16
