A popular Portland pop-up is getting a permanent shop to sell their special mochi donuts.
Chef Alex McGillivray and his partner, Emily Mikiko Strocher, plans on opening Mikiko Mochi Donuts before the year ends, Eater Seattle says. Eight kinds of killed and unfilled donuts will be available at this new shop, including POG (passionfruit orange guava), black sesame, Thai tea, and strawberry with matcha pudding, or passionfruit curd.
There will also be seasonal flavors and one-offs, and "naked" doughnuts will also be used for egg breakfast sandwiches. McGillivray also talked about a chicken and waffle variation with mochiko chicken and mochi waffles.
McGillivray and Mikiko Strocher made mochi donuts inspired by her family's traditional mochitsuki celebrations. Writers say the recipe was closer to a butter mochi, a Hawaiian rice flour cake.
The business launched as a pop-up right before the pandemic hit last year. Despite limitations, Portlanders couldn't get enough of these delicious donuts. They were even being sold in other restaurants and businesses around the Rose City.
Mikiko's will be open at 2821 NE Everett Street, #111.
