A 16-year-old driver is under investigation for hitting multiple cyclists with his truck near Houston on Saturday morning.
More than a dozen cyclists training for an IRONMAN race were riding on U.S. 290 outside of Waller, Texas, when the crash happened. Witnesses say the teen was attempting to blow exhaust on the riders.
“A kid in a black truck attempted to ‘roll coal’ us where they accelerate past blowing diesel exhaust on cyclist,” Chase Ferrell told KPRC.
Ferrell was cycling with the group, but he was not among the six riders who were hit by the truck.
“When I pulled up on the scene, I thought I was going to be pulling up to people that were dead,” Ferrell said.
All six survived, but four were transported to local hospitals with shoulder, neck, and back injuries.
The teen hasn't been identified because he's a minor, but he stayed at the crash site as police arrived. The teen was not arrested after the crash and was allowed to leave, which has outraged Ferrell and others in the biking community.
"That this driver has yet to face any consequences certainly has many wondering if it's open season on cyclists in Waller County," Joe Cutrufo, BikeHouston's executive director, told the Houston Chronicle.
Outraged citizens flooded a recent Facebook post by the Waller County district attorney about the investigation.
"Please do not allow this to be swept under the rug. This was an assault, not a 'collision,'" commented Scott Schaefer.
"It’s a miracle there was no fatalities, these cyclists lives have now changed because of this kids actions. He needs to suffer the consequences. This should not be tolerated in any county," wrote Belinda Aguilar Hernandez.
"A slap on the wrist isn’t enough either. Driving is a privilege and if he is old enough and legally able to be behind the wheel, then he is old enough to take the consequences of his actions," commented Cat Nguyen.
