Shakira took to her Instagram stories on Wednesday (September 29) to reveal that she and her eight-year-old son, Milan, were attacked by wild boars while walking through Barcelona, Spain. The singer said that the boars reached for her bag in order to grab it, but she was able to fight them off.
"They were taking my bag to the woods with my mobile phone in it," Shakira told her fans. "They've destroyed everything."
She asked her son to confirm the story, telling him, "Milan tell the truth. Say how your mummy stood up to the wild boar."
According to the BBC, wild boar attacks in Barcelona have been increasing over recent years. The number of boars spread throughout Europe has grown to an estimated ten million, and the animals are known to carry a variety of diseases. Reports of wild boar attacks in Spain reached up to nearly 1,200 in 2016, with callers claiming they had attacked dogs, cat-feeders, cars, and more.
While the singer did not say where and when the attack took place, Shakira and her son did not appear to be injured. See the images from Shakira's boar attack here.
Other high-profile attacks from boars in Europe include one man having his laptop stolen. The man, who had been sunbathing in the nude, chased after the boar and managed to retrieve his laptop. They have also been known to steal groceries, having moved further into cities in order to search for food.
Shakira lives in Spain with her partner, star soccer player Gerard Piqué. The singer also made headlines during her 2020 Superbowl Halftime performance alongside Jennifer Lopez.
