A mountain lion was seen roaming around in Rohnert Park on Monday, October 18.

According to KRON, the sighting caused nearby schools to be placed on lockdown. The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety reported that Evergreen and Lawrence Jones Middle Schools were put on a temporary lockdown.

The mountain lion was spotted walking along trails in the area of the Five Creek and Crane Creek, which is just east of Eagle Park and Evergreen Elementary School, according to police.

Officials said the mountain lion is known to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and has a tracking device.

One scientist has been tracking the mountain lion for over six months and said she has a known neurological issue but has been able to hunt and survive in the wild.

Wildlife officers were able to tranquilize the cat that is believed to be female.

"Fortunately, in this situation, we were able to call the experts out, and they were able to tranquilize the animal and hopefully return it back to the wild soon," Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Jeff Nicks said.

The mountain lion was taken to a wildlife rescue center five miles away in Petaluma where she will be placed in a remote habitat in nearby woods, according to NBC Bay Area.
