Everybody loves doughnuts. In fact, people love them so much there are two national holidays dedicated to them!

The first occurs annually on June 4. To understand why there are two days on the calendar dedicated to the fried treat, you have to start with the origin of the first date.

National Doughnut Day was first created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor its members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

According to Mental Floss, the women dispatched to the front lines in France figured out that battle-tested helmets were perfect for frying up to seven doughnuts at a time.

The origin of the second date is harder to trace but historians have traced back mentions of the November Doughnut Day to the 1930s. It's speculated the November 5 is also recognized as National Doughnut Day because it's close to Veterans Day.

Most establishments offer free doughnuts and discounts on the June 4 holiday, but it's always a good time for doughnuts and to support a local business.

According to Yelp, you can find the best donuts in Fresno at Judy's Donut.
