Do you know your state motto?

It turns out, many Californians have the wrong motto attributed to their state. But California isn't alone. A recent survey by Solitaire Bliss found that 2 in 5 Americans don't know their home state motto.

According to their findings, only 53% of California residents could correctly identify "Eureka" ("I have found it") as their state motto, which refers to the discovery of gold for many years.

Instead, over 1 in 5 thought the state motto was "Gold in These Lands." 21% thought it was "Land of Discovery," and 6% thought the motto was "Keep Searching."

People from New Hampshire who responded to the survey scored the best, answering with the correct motto 99% of the time, and people from North Carolina scored the worst with only 13% answering correctly.

The United States also has an official motto, "In God We Trust," which was legislated in 1956. States also started adopting their own motto in accordance with their citizens' individual values and ideals.

According to Solitaire Bliss, Californians were the 32nd "most clued up" in the nation when it comes to knowing their state motto.

Many mottos are bizarre and often written in different languages. Check out the map below to see every state's motto and what its residents thought it was.
