What’s the difference between “diet” soda and “zero sugar” soda?

Nothing.

It’s all a marketing ploy on the part of soft drink makers. The word “diet” has fallen out of favor with millenials and Gen Z grownups. As a result soda marketers are phasing out the word diet in favor of zero sugar. Some companies, Coke for example, use both terms. Each having a slightly different flavor.
