By Katrina Nattress
March 2, 2022
The iHeartRadio Music Awards are returning live on March 22 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, celebrating this year's most-played artists and songs on iHeartRadio stations and the iHeartRadio app — everything the fans have been listening to.
While the Alternative Artist of the Year nominees are most likely names you know — All Time Low, Billie Eilish, Imagine Dragons, Machine Gun Kelly and twenty one pilots — those up for the Best New Alternative Artist presented by Stifel are names you will surely remember as they are the genre's rising stars.
Keep reading to learn more about Cannons, Clairo, girl in red, Måneskin and WILLOW, and see the full list of 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards nominees here.
Cannons
Cannons have been winning over fans in their hometown of Los Angeles since 2013, but it was last year that the electropop trio really broke out. Their single "Fire For You" off 2019's Shadows has been receiving tons of airplay and even hit No. 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart. They're planning to drop their third studio album, Fever Dreams, on March 25 — three days after the 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards — and are currently touring North America.
Clairo
Clairo, born Claire Elizabeth Cottrill, has been sharing music on the internet since she was 13 years old. Ten years later, the singer-songwriter has two full-length albums under her belt and is headlining (and selling out) shows all over the world. She's also played some pretty prestigious festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella, and she's only just getting started.
girl in red
Girl in red's 2021 hit "Serotonin" has garnered some famous fans like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish (the latter's brother FINNEAS produced it), but the Norwegian singer-songwriter found success years before the world fell in love with that song. Her 2017 single "I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend" was certified Gold by the RIAA and "We Fell In Love In October" went Platinum. She's currently touring North America and plans to open for Eilish during a London show on June 26.
Måneskin
Måneskin's journey to success has been so exponential that it surprised even the members of the band. After winning Eurovision less than a year ago, the Italian rockers' cover of the Four Seasons' "Beggin'" has gone Platinum and is blowing up on both Alternative and Pop charts (Måneskin is also nominated for an iHeartRadio Music Award in the Best New Pop Artist category). Their singles "Mammamia" and "I Wanna Be Your Slave" are also ascending the charts and landed the band their debut appearance on Saturday Night Live and a spot on this year's iHeartRadio ALTer EGO, where they unsurprisingly slayed.
WILLOW
Willow Smith has come a long way since 2010's "Whip My Hair." Now going by the moniker WILLOW, she's grown into herself and leaning hard into her pop-punk roots. Last year she released her first rock album, Lately I Feel Everything, and last month was featured on Machine Gun Kelly's latest single "Emo Girl." In January, WILLOW blew the roof off of the Forum in Los Angeles during iHeartRadio's ALTer EGO and was recently announced as a performer on the Daytime Stage for this year's iHeartRadio Music Festival.
Fans can tune in to watch the 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Tuesday, March 22nd on FOX from 8pm-10pm ET (PT tape-delayed). The show will also be broadcast on iHeartMedia radio stations across the country and on the iHeartRadio app.
