It may have taken audiences a while to get on board with the Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek, but once it landed on Netflix in 2017, viewers couldn't get enough of the Rose Family. Now a small California town along Highway 1 is being called "the real-life Schitt's Creek:" Harmony, California.
Writer Andrew Pridgen, who covers Central California, gave a detailed account of the quaint city and how it parallels with the beloved sitcom for SFGATE. He explains the town and the show's biggest similarity:
"In a case of art imitating life, one entrepreneur bought this California town in 2014, bringing life and charm back to it. And in January, 2015, "Schitt’s Creek," one of the most beloved sitcom hits of this century, debuted in the U.S. on the Pop network. It told the story — wait for it — of an entrepreneur who bought a small town for his son’s birthday and after losing everything was forced to move the family there."
Harmony has a population of 18 and has undergone a revitalization effort over the past half-decade, according to Pridgen. There are plenty of other similarities in the town. For example, he interviewed Eric Dandurand, a professional glassblower who owns Harmony Glassworks, where locals and tourists can watch him create cups, vases, and more. The shop wouldn't be out of place next to Rose Apothecary, David's (Dan Levy) store in Schitt's Creek.
