McKinney has spent the last 24 years working in Los Angeles County as a prosecutor. He has worked on numerous cases ranging from juvenile to gang violence cases. McKinney has prosecuted 40 murder cases and secured a conviction for every one of them, including the high-profile trial of rapper Nipsey Hussle's murder.
