A woman went viral on social media after sharing her dining experience with a large Black party at an Applebee's in Mississippi.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Dawn Montgomery said she was among a party of 14 people who dined at an Applebee's in Laurel, Mississippi when a manager "made a scene" over the $150 tip they left.
Montgomery explained that their server, Melissa, was new to the job and appeared anxious over serving a large party. The woman said Melissa did a great job waiting on their party, so she left a large tip.
However, after leaving the tip, a manager confronted the group, telling them that the restaurant would need to call the corporate office to see if they could accept it. Montgomery said the manager "made a scene," acting as if the tip wouldn't go through. She was forced to leave two signatures on the receipt and her phone number with management.
Amid backlash over the viral incident, Montgomery said the manager called her to apologize. An Applebee's corporate team member also told Montgomery that there would be more training for managers in the wake of the incident.
See Montgomery's series of tweets about the incident below.
Hey @Applebees, we ate here in Laurel, MS. Before we, a party of 10, sat down we were told our waitress was new & afraid to wait big tables. We were patient w/Melissa & she did a great job. When the check came out I tipped this. Why the manager made me leave my number because.. pic.twitter.com/5PXjDevsr3
