Why San Diego Could Get a New NFL Team

February 7, 2025

Remember when the Super Bowl was played in San Diego in 1988, 1998 and 2003?

Remember when the Chargers played in San Diego for more than 50 years before the team’s owner turned his back on his longtime home and fans and took it to Los Angeles in 2017?

Well, for the first time since then, there is some talk about San Diego maybe becoming the home of a new NFL team.

A website known for its news about the NFL has an article by a sports and entertainment writer who picks up on some buzz about the NFL expanding to more cities.

As this guy puts it, the NFL is obviously doing well and making lots of money with NFL games winning the ratings over other sports and with the Super Bowl consistently being the most watched sports event.

Among the 15 cities this writer suggests would be good candidates to get a new NFL team is San Diego, coming in at the 4th city on his list of the 15 cities.

In fact he says San Diego should get a new NFL team, saying the Chargers move to L-A was more about a cash grab than about the city itself and as the eighth-largest city in the country, a new team in San Diego would draw a ton of fans and cash just from people wanting to spite Chargers ownership.

Even without an NFL-sized stadium, a hail Mary may not have to happen for that to happen, and if it were to happen, what a big win that would be.
