The boyfriend of an Alabama State University student who was shot to death is facing charges after he gave conflicting statements about the details of the incident, police said.

On Friday (April 4), 20-year-old Rogers McCloud Jr. was arrested on charges of capital murder in connection to the death of his girlfriend, Gennia Grimes, a junior at Alabama State, per PEOPLE.

Grimes died on March 27 after Montgomery County Sheriff's Office (MSCO) deputies responded to reports of a shooting on U.S. Highway 80 East in Pike Road, Alabama. According to authorities, McCloud Jr. was in the car with Grimes at the time she was shot but had given conflicting stories about what happened.

“The evidence just wasn’t linking up the way he described it,” Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said in a statement.

Grimes was studying criminal justice at ASU and was a member of the Honey Beez dance team. Last year, Grimes reportedly welcomed her son, Rogers McCloud III, with McCloud Jr.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office is working with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation and the sheriff’s investigators on the probe into Grimes' death.

“This case involves domestic violence where a young innocent woman was murdered at the hands of her boyfriend,” MCSO Asst. Chief Wesley Richerson said in a statement. “To protect the integrity of the case, we have not publicly discussed the details of this investigation. However, please do not confuse our silence with inaction.”

McCloud Jr. is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility without bond.

Grimes' family launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to raise money to cover funeral expenses.
