Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
But that's right. You heard the man. It's that time
of week. My name is Bernie Froddle. We're coming to
you live from the tyrack dot com studios here in
Las Vegas, almost Super Bowl fifty eight, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Fox Sports Radio, tyrack dot Com. We'll help you get there.
An unmatched selection, fast free shipping, freewad after protection, and
over ten thousand recommend an installers tyrack dot com the

(00:26):
way tied buying should be. You better recognize in about
ninety seconds, I'm gonna give you multiple reasons. And Perry
Mason likes Staccatto Fashion. Google it Knuckleheads on why Jason
Smith's New York Knicks are absolutely for real. Last year,
at this time, no one thought Denver would do what

(00:47):
they did. Hang on, I'll be right back with you first.
I can't wait for tonight's midnight hour. It's gonna be
one of our best ones ever. If you saw the
Lions game last Sunday, we've got a lot to chop up.
I'm gonna set that up. Dan Campbell, a guy I
respect tremendously, was truly humbled and anybody can be humbled.
This is a humbling game. The winningest coach of all time, Donjula,

(01:09):
was humbled. He was even humbled. One summer a northern
main vacationally with his family, wife and four kids, he said,
why don't we take in a matinee movie. They walk
into a movie theater in the middle of nowhere. As
he entered the theater, they look down in the front
row and there are four people. Four people, And as
soon as Shul and his wife entered the theater, they

(01:29):
turn around, stand up and start clapping and cheering. Donjula's
wife looks at him says, well look at that, honey.
No matter where you go in this great nation of ours,
no matter when it is, everybody loves you, everybody knows you,
everybody recognizes you, everybody respects you. At that point, the
gentleman in the front row said, lady, we have no
idea who the hell your husband is. All we know

(01:51):
is the movie theater will not start the movie until
there's at least ten people in attendance. Anybody can be humbled,
even the Great Dome. All right, you better recognize I'm
not playing here, peeps. You better watch out for the Knicks.
Why all of a sudden, Am I taking this tat
because Thursday Night's game against the Indiana Pacers. Heading into

(02:12):
the game, you know I'm known to throw a shackle
or two. I kind of know what I'm doing. I
thought it might be a rough night for the New
York Knicks, didn't I didn't bet the game. You have
four key players out, Julius Randall, og Onobi, Quintin Grimes,
and Mitchell Robinson. They were all sidelined due to injuries.
So even Stevie Wonder could look at this and say,

(02:35):
the short handed Nicks where they were short handed, they
would very much have their work cutout for him against
an above average Pacers team. But see either remaining healthy
Knicks led by, and you better recognize he's no longer
a burgeoning star. He's a star. He rhymes with Jalen Brunson.
They all banded together to come away with a victory

(02:55):
one O nine, one O five on nothing. Brunson dropped
forty points fifteen or thirty from the floor, his fifth,
his fifth forty point game in the season, and he
was showered with chance of MVP from Madison Square Garden
during his postgame interview and Brunson's a humble guy. That
left him kind of speechless. Now, in case you haven't

(03:17):
been paying attention, Jalen Brunson's been outstanding ever since arriving
in New York. He got a four year, one hundred
and four million dollars contract before last season, and it
was a moved. What did people do? They mocked it,
they laughed at it. Basically, he'd been a bench player
during his time with the Dallas Mavericks, but he caught
fire during the playoffs right before free agency, and he

(03:40):
parlayed that success well into a contract that many believed
was an overpay. Not me. I always thought he'd look
good in that back court, but nobody knew it would
be this good. But the reality, Jalen Brunson has thrived
and he's become this centerpiece of an X offense alongside
Julius Randall Brunson. I believe he is averaging around twenty

(04:05):
four to twenty five points a game. I'll check that
he was averaging that last year. He's up around twenty
eight points a game this year, and he got his
first very well deserved All Star selection. But as critical
as Jalen Brunson has been to the Knicks and their success.
Thursday night also showed something I bet you haven't been recognizing.

(04:26):
You better recognize the next have legitimate depth. They have
impressive depth. Sure the injuries to Randalin Robinson, well they thrust.
And this guy makes my all name team presst and
Jewell we'll just call him precious because he's precious. And
Isaiah Hartenstein, well they got put into starting roles in

(04:48):
both players. You know, life's about making the most of
your opportunities. They showed out against Indiana. Hartenstein had nineteen
rebounds all as John Wooden once said, there's a place
in heaven for rebound and a chew what had sixteen.
That's how you do it. That's how you do it.
Will Ferrell and old school that along with Josh Hartz

(05:08):
twelve rebounds, they had a sixteen to forty four rebounding
advantage over for the next excuse me over Indiana, but
not for nothing. Precious, I love the name Precious also
had two block shots in four steals, Hartenstein six assists.
See that's part of basketball too. The whole becomes better

(05:29):
than some of their parts. Even Tom Thibodeau, who doesn't
smile a lot was smiling after the game, talked about
the Nick's toughness, talked about the great minutes, talked about
the rim protection, talked about Precious, Yes, precious, He's precious.
Had a tough matchup all night against Pascal Siakam. They
really didn't know how much he was gonna be able

(05:50):
to play at the four. But what do you do?
A terrific job. It's all about making the most of
your opportunities. I believe that Tom Thibodau was always waxing,
glowing philosophically about Isaiah Hartenstein, saying, quote, he's guineas rhythm back.
Made a number of hustle plays. You notice how we're

(06:11):
talking hustle plays, rebounds, block shots, assists. That's a team.
The Knicks looked really good missing four starters, and Thibodeau admitted,
we're asking these guys to do a lot. Josh plays
every position on the floor. I don't know what he is,
He's just a basketball player. That's what makes him great
for us. Unquote. The Knicks also got important contributions from

(06:33):
a guy who's not exactly a household name their backup
point guard Miles McBride played twenty nine minutes, just the
third time this entire season he's seen more than twenty
minutes of action sixteen points on six to thirteen shooting. Now,
I realize the injuries are a bit of a hit
to the next front court. But if you look at
what Hartenstein precious heart, what do they do they soften

(06:55):
the blow they have taken on the personality of their
general Tom Thibodeau. You remember he was the architect of
that great Celtics team about a decade ago that won
e n NBA Championship. You've been served, You've been warned.
Jason Smith's Nicks are for real. Laugh, clown laugh, make

(07:16):
all the fun you want. You really think Milwaukee's where
they need to be. Doc Rivers right on, Q starts
out zero and two. I can't wait for a Game
seven so we can blame everybody Boston Celtics. You think
that team's tough, I don't. I could go on and
on and do roll call. A little later in the show,
I'm going to talk about the midseason struggles that the

(07:38):
Miami heater having. So who's coming out of the East
If not the Knicks? Who why not? Am I predicting that?
Not just yet, but I will say this. If you
sample Thursday night's game against the Indiana Pacers, I promise
you they should have won you over based on their depth,
their toughness, their teamwork, and the way they beat a

(07:58):
very good Indiana team with everybody stepping up doing what
they needed to do. Again, Precious, Precious nineteen rebounds, sixteen rebounds,
I'm sorry, Heartnessteen nineteen, Josh Hart twelve rebounds as well.
Those are three guys, three guys that combined for forty seven.
Those three alone had more rebounds than the entire Indiana

(08:21):
Pacer squad, and it resulted in a victory. Looking forward
to the Saturday night game between the Knicks and the Lakers,
the Knicks opened up as a six and a half
point favorite. Money is actually coming on the Lakers, but
I wouldn't fade this next team at home because when
it matters most, they seem to be able to step
up and rise to the occasion, at least so far.

(08:43):
And that's you know. As Arnie Spanier says, the show
is tonight, so we're dealing with it tonight. By the way,

Houston a favorite on the road of Kansas. That's just
one of four. By the way, what are the storylines?

I think they can. We'll chop it up. We'll chop

You hear this ginm and on Saturday nights between eight
and eleven Pacific time, along with Jason Martin. He's our

(11:05):
Fox Sports Radio college basketball guru. Say hello to Aaron Torris. Aaron,
how are you, buddy?

Speaker 6 (11:11):
Berndy Frado Man, I'm doing great? How are you, budd?

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I'm excited? Were These are very exciting times And since
there was no football this weekend, I think for a
lot of folks around the country, I think for a
lot of folks around the country, this might be sort
of the de facto college basketball beginning of the season,
even though most teams have played about twenty games. So

(11:35):
before we get into the four key matchups that want
to dive into, if you talk a little bit about
the storylines we've missed. And oh, by the way, are
Yukon Husky's right where they need to be ranked number
one of the country?

Speaker 6 (11:47):
Well, Yukon, it's it's unbelievable. I mean, you know, I
was at the Yukon Kansas game earlier in the year
and Dan Hurley said at the time, he said, look,
I don't think we're as good as last year right now,
but we have the chance to reach all of the
same goals. And what's kind of crazy is I think
people would forget this. Bernie. You don't because you're plugged
into everything. But yu kond Of through twenty games last

(12:09):
year was fifteen and five with five losses in league play.
They now, of course, are entering Medicine Square guarded tomorrow.
I believe at eighteen and two, seventeen and two something
like that. They're only loss in league play back in
December and the opener at Seaton Hall, so you know,
long way away from you know, crowning them the Big

(12:30):
East regular season champs, the Big East Tournament champs, you know,
a back to back national championship potentially. But I just
bring it up because you know, as good as they
were in the tournament last year, they weren't anywhere this
good in January and early February. As a matter of fact,
Dan Hurley had a fun joke this week about how
much this program has hated January, and he made some

(12:53):
joke about, you know, January's back on his good side
or something like that after an undefeated January. So the
big story and then Obviously, I know you want to
dive into some of the matchups, but listen, I think
it's a pretty wide open field right now. I still
think we're trying to figure out who these best teams are.
I don't think there's very much separating pretty much anybody,

(13:14):
and I want to say most of the power conferences.
So it's going to be a wide open end of
the regular season, and it's certainly going to be a
wide open trip into March.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Talk with Aaron Torris, our college basketball guru, I do
think I agree with you it's wide open. You look
at the first four, whether regarding the coaches pull or
the ap top twenty five, they're the same where you've got,
you know, Yukon, Purdue, North Carolina, Houston, actually Tennessee, Wisconsin, Duke,
They're all. You throw them at a tumbler. Who could
win six in earrow? Who do you trust? But before

(13:47):
we get to that, talk about maybe some of the
storylines Aaron, that we've missed. Now, you know, basketball has
been played in November December and now we're almost would
be are into February. What are some of the storylines
some of the folks may have missed that You've always
got your finger on the pulse.

Speaker 6 (14:05):
Good question. I mean, I think I just think the
storyline is nobody separating themselves. I mean, even those teams
that you mentioned. Wisconsin is coming off of loss last
night at Nebraska. Tennessee lost at home to South Carolina
a few days ago. The thing that I really believe
is the story of this season, Bernie and other people
won't say it, but you know me, I kind of

(14:26):
march the beating my own drum. Something that I've told
you privately is I believe this is the year, especially
in the conferences that are not afraid to spend money
in the NIL space. I think this is the year
where NIL has flattened the curve in college basketball because
you know somewhere of you know, obviously, look in college basketball,
most of your roster building gets done in the spring

(14:48):
after the season. So spring of twenty twenty one, NIL
is in a thing. Spring of twenty twenty two, everybody's
trying to figure out when NIL is. Spring of twenty
twenty three. Everybody knows when NIL if they have a
collective they have money put aside to essentially you know,
quote unquote five players. The NCAA doesn't want to hear that,
but it's the truth. And so I bring it up

(15:09):
because last offseason was the first offseason where everybody really
kind of had nil in a row. And I think
what it's led to is between nil and the portal,
it has led to a flattening of the curve in
college basketball. I mean, you look at say the SEC
I just mentioned it. You know, South Carolina is a
team that's been a historic after thought. They're eighteen and

(15:30):
three right now, and you know, tied in second place
along with Tennessee and a few others and con potentially
win this league. You know, Ole Miss has been a
historic after thought. They're eighteen and three in that league.
You know, you go to other leagues, the Big Twelve,
I mean I think last I look, Texas Tech was
maybe a top those standings, but there isn't much gap

(15:51):
into about the first eight, nine, ten, eleven teams in
that league. Kansas has already lost to Central Florida, has
alreaty lost to West Virginia. We are two teams that
were picked for at the bottom of that league. So
I could go on and on, but I just bring
it up to say, I think the biggest story The
biggest narrative right now is that on any given night,

(16:12):
pretty much in any of these Power conference leagues, whether
it's the SEC, the Big Twelfth, the Big East, et cetera,
if you don't come to play, if you don't show up,
you can lose. And again, whether it's Wisconsin losing it
Nebraska last night, Nebraska, by the way, already has a
win over Purdue Tenneto losing it home to South Carolina,
by the way, a week before South Carolina be Kentucky.

(16:33):
I could go on and on and on down the list,
but just about everybody in these Power conferences can beat
anybody else on any given night, and I think nil
and the portal has been the great equalizer. And I
would add toughs that I just think that, you know,
I've talked to coaches about it. Bruce Barow said it
on my podcast. So this isn't off the record stuff.
I mean, this is stuff that people are talking about

(16:54):
very publicly and very openly this college basketball season.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Talk go there on tourists. Aaron, I think your theory
is solid and I agree with it, and I think
you back it up with relevant specifics in terms of
the parody we see in the upsets right in your backyard.
I want to ask, I want you to dive a
little bit into USC, because back in the summer, I
really thought Andy Enfield had assembled a pretty competitive team.

(17:20):
You had Isaiah Collier, We heard a lot about Bronnie James.
They had a bunch of returning veterans, and USC has
really struggled this year. What is the issue there and
what does your honest take on Bronnie James.

Speaker 6 (17:34):
Well, I mean, I think the issue is they just
they haven't been able to really have a full lineup.
I mean, you know, obviously everybody knows about the terrifying
situation with Bronnie James over the summer. You know, thankfully
he's okay, but but he's come back and you know,
he's kind of looked like a guy that missed you know, five, six, seven,

(17:54):
eight weeks. He couldn't really do much of anything. Isaiah Collier,
who I think most people still think is an NBA
H draft pick, has a major injury. He's been out.
Bogiel as their best returning player, has struggled as well.
So USC, you know, on paper, and I know, you know,
I was down on campus during the springtime. They were
really excited about their group, but I just think it's

(18:14):
a combination of injuries and and really just not really
having their full compliment of guys. As far as Brodny's concerned,
you know, he's he's for all the reasons you think
in many others, he's the most unique player in college basketball.
I mean, I've heard, you know, our colleague Doug Gottlieb
say this, I've heard others say it, and it's the
truth is that, you know, Brodnie James is an NBA player,

(18:37):
but he's not a one and done in a traditional sense.
You know, he's a guy that if his name was
you know, Johnny Smith or whatever, or at Tiznski, you know,
Bernie Frado's favorite player, if his name was at Kazinsky,
you know, and he was able to develop at his
own pace. You know, he's a great athlete, he's a
plus defender, he's a great teammate. As far as you

(19:00):
know understanding the game, He's got a real high basketball IQ.
He's just not there yet. And so it's interesting because
you know, is he going to be a two three
year college player? His his father has not only said.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
Publicly that he went to play it with an in
the NBA. But obviously he said a few weeks ago,
you know, he could be helping the Lakers right now
now based on how the Lakers would play it, maybe
he could, although the Lakers were pretty good without Big
Lebron last night. But anyway, I'm bringing it up to say,
you know, he's a very talented player. Nobody thinks he's
ready for the NBA next year, but we just don't

(19:35):
know what he's gonna do. Because there's been so many
mixed signals from Lebron himself.

Speaker 6 (19:39):
I would add this to Burn. I know, I'm going
along on the answer. I think that complicated his recruitment
as well, because I think there there are a ton
of schools that I know would have been interested in them,
but they said, well, you know, are we getting them
for one year? Are we getting them for more than
one year? If we're only getting them from one for
one year, we got to play him. You can't bring
in Brian James and have him be the eighth guy

(20:02):
and play twelve minutes the game in a role. So
it's an interesting deal by all accounts. He's a great
kid by all accounts. Really, honestly, the family has been
very hands off with the coaching staff, but it doesn't
change the fact of what lebron has said publicly, and
I think that obviously complicates evaluating Bronnie as a prospect
in the college and pro level.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Aaron coming up after the bottom of the YAR, I
like you to hang with us after Kenny's update to
I want to focus in on the four top ten
matchup Saturday. But real quickly, as you look at the
Wooden Award list, your thoughts is it going to be
Zach Eati or could it be an Armando Baycock? Could
it be an LJ. Crier from Houston? What are your thoughts?

Speaker 6 (20:48):
I don't think it's as done as everybody makes it
out to be. You know, it's almost it reminds me
of a Yokich last year where he was going to
get it and then there was some pushback. And I think,
you know, the two guys, guys that to me are
really seemed to be, you know, making the moves. R. J. Davis,
the guard at Carolina, is averaging like twenty one a game,

(21:10):
making big shots at the top five team. I know
they're coming off logs to Jordia Tech, but you know
they that success. I think he's gonna be in the
conversation and then I think, don't connect, you know, twenty
points per game at Tennessee. I think he's had at
least twenty five in about seven or eight straight games.
And really, and we'll talk about this when we preview
the game with Kentucky on Saturday. He has raised the entire,

(21:35):
you know, ceiling of that program because they've always been
great defensively, great on the boards, but they've never been
able to match people offensively. Well now they can. So
those would be the two guys that, in my opinion,
to catch Zach Eadie right now, I think if zak
Eadie's award to lose, but I also think that there
is some you know, voter fatigue or whatever. I think

(21:55):
people are willing to look at potential other candidates, and
I think those are the two that probably could get
into mixed Fleet.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
Aaron hank Tight, We're gonna come right back to you.
I want to dive in to these four what I
consider to be outstanding top ten matchups Saturday that all
have their own storylines, and of course I think a
couple of them be going on when you and Jason
around the air at first, just go to our guy,
the Chef, Kevin wired with the latest Yeah.

Speaker 8 (22:20):
Friday night Hardwood Action saw the Nuggets get another monster
game from the Joker, as Nicola Yoka to triple double
that featured a twenty plus rebound performance twenty seven points,
twenty two rebounds to be exact and at twelve assistans.
Denver beats the Portland Trailblazers one twenty to oneh eight.
Pelicans escape against the Spurs, being propelled by Zion Williamson's

(22:43):
thirty three points and eight rebounds. New Orleans winning at
one fourteen to one thirteen, Thunder over the Hornets one
twenty six to one oh six behind thirty one points,
ninety sisters five steals from Shay Gildas. Alexander Magic upset
the Timberwolves one to wait one oh six, Warriors over
the GRIBs one twenty one, one on one, Rockets blast
the Raptors one thirty five at two one oh six,

(23:06):
Kings outpaced Indiana won thirty three one twenty two, Hawks
over the Suns one twenty nine, one twenty and the
heat scorched. The Wizards won ten at two one oh two.
Jimmy Butler twenty four points and nine rebounds for Miami
and the Glippers with he won thirty six one twenty
five win against the Detroit Pistons as Kawhi Leonard has

(23:26):
thirty three points. Detroit now just six and forty two
on the season. In the college ranks. Only a couple
of ranked teams in action on this Friday night. Number
twenty one Dayton over Saint Bonaventure seventy six to seventy one.
Number thirteen Creighton upset by Butler ninety nine to ninety eight.

(23:46):
Beck to you, Bernie, all.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Right, thanks chef, good stuff. All right, Aaron, let's dive
right in. Uh the four games Saturday featuring top ten
matchups often you are looking. Let's start with the Kentucky
Tennessee matchup. Kentucky hosts number five Tennessee. This is a
game I feel that that Kentucky's going to be very

(24:10):
fired up for on their home floor. I think you're
going to get max effort. But Tennessee is not going
to be a slotch. Your thoughts on that game, Yeah.

Speaker 6 (24:19):
Two quick thoughts. You know one, I just mentioned it
before we got to wire for the update. You know,
Tennessee Dogs that's a great story. But I also think
it is worth noting that they really do struggle to
put the ball in the basket without him. You know,
he's averaging twenty a game. Nobody else on Tennessee is
averaging more than eleven. Now, part of that is they

(24:40):
do play a lot of guys, but part of it
is they don't have very much offensive firepower. So I
think there's that factor. The other thing, I'll say burned,
this gets ount crazy. I think it's a sort of
a must win game for Kentucky. And I'll tell you why.
They've lost two of their last three, three of their
last five. And as I said, this year in college hoops,
everybody is losing the league game, but losing the way

(25:02):
they did to Florida at home on Wednesday. They're up
three late, or you know, they're up three late, they
decide not to file. Florida hit the three, it goes
to overtime, whatever, whatever. There's starting to be some real
noise out of Kentucky again. You know, John CALIFERI listen.
I don't know if you can fire him, but his
life I don't think is in a perfect place as

(25:24):
far as fans support. Right now, and so I just
bring it up because that loss on Wednesday felt kind
of like could be the slippery slope towards another disappointing season.
If you remember last year they ended up as a
sixth seed, they don't make it out of the first
weekend of the tournament, you lose to Tennessee, You're you're
you're already sitting there with four with four, you know,

(25:44):
four league losses, six losses overall, and bluntly, you're probably
looking at a five, six, seven seed and again an
uphill battle once you get to the tournament. So I
think you're gonna get Kentucky's best effort to key there.
One more thing is DJ Wagner, the Dewan Wagner, former
lottery picks. He missed the Florida game with a nagging
ankle injury. All reports are that he's going to play tomorrow.

(26:07):
I think he's kind of an important piece for them.
Didn't play Wednesday. That's something to keep an eye on,
especially by the way, I know a lot of your
audience likes to throw a little bit of money down.
I would check that injury report before I throw down
any money.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Bring up some really good points about Kentucky. They ranked
seventy fifth, and the adjust the defensive efficiency, that's why
you lose to a team like you and C Welmington.
That wasn't good spot on about Dalton Neck. He was
hitting threes right and left, but they still lost to
Carolina the other night. Check that South Carolina. So, but
Tennessee is a good defensive team. Good good points all

(26:40):
duly noted. Number two Perdue visits Wisconsin, fresh after coughing
up a nineteen point lead against Nebraska. Your thoughts on that.

Speaker 6 (26:49):
Game, Yeah, I mean, I think the thing there is
you know, burn one ously Wisconsin is coming off the loss.
But I think to the thing that I think is
in your thing is the Purdue foul discrepancy on Wednesday
night was so blatant for people who didn't see it.
Purdue had a forty six to eight free throw advantage.

(27:12):
That is plus thirty You've been covered college, but you
give a cover best. Have you ever seen a plus
thirty eight foul discrepancy in a basketball game?

Speaker 2 (27:21):
That's been talked about all week? And how does that happen? Well?
Northwestern coach I his exit off the floor was epic
the way anyway.

Speaker 6 (27:31):
What I would say is. I'll say this is. I
think that is going to be a factor on Sunday
when these two teams played, because it became a national
talking point. The Big Ten and the Big Ten league
offices under fire. I'll say this, Bernie, Listen. I don't
want to sit here and make myself sound more important
than I am. But I brought up this exact topic
earlier in the season. They played Alabama out they were

(27:54):
plus fourteen at the fall line. Alabama had three four
to five guys follow out. My understand there were some
public complaints from some people after that game and the
next time the next game out they played Arizona, the
fall discrepancy is basically even. So this is a topic
that in college basketball circles has been going around, and

(28:15):
I believe it's go. I don't know how it can't
be on the referees nine when they play Wisconsin a
few days from now. So to me, if fall discrepancy
is even, I think it's obviously advantage with contin at home.
So I would lean Wisconsin in that game because I
do think fair or not, that is going to be
a factor in that game.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
Fair enough, fair point, and I think this game will
decide the big ten. We shall see Sunday tips off
one pm Eastern Duke in North Carolina. Duke rank seventh
at North Carolina number three. Interestingly enough, Hubert Davis, he's
been at Chapel Hell two years. His first year, they
almost won a national championship. Last year, not even a
bid to the tournament, the Blue Devils, but they got

(28:55):
concerns of their own. Jeremy Roach has knee injuries, et cetera,
et cetera. North Carolina.

Speaker 6 (29:02):
Well, I think the big story year is because Carolina
lost to Georgia Tech on on Tuesday. Yeah, I mean
this is now for first place. At least, you know,
they would be tied in the lost column. Carolina would
have a one game lead in the win column. But
you know, sometimes these two teams are They're obviously they're
two huge brands, but they're not always the two best

(29:23):
teams in the league. This year they are, and obviously, look,
I think Carolina would take a pretty convincing lead in
the standings if they were to win this one. But
if they lose it, you know, Duke's basically right there.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
You know.

Speaker 6 (29:35):
The thing I'll say about Duke, they've really quietly won
eleven of twelve. As you said, you know, Jeremy Roach
was out. The only loss that they had during that stretch,
which was to fit at home. Some of the other guards,
Tyree Procter started playing really well. He was a projected
lottery pick coming into the year. I actually I saw

(29:55):
the spread at least open. I don't know if the
number has changed all, but I saw they it opened
with dou good four and a half. I kind of
like Duke. I think I do like Duke.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
I'm with you, Aaron. I think Duke wins tomorrow. I
think they've got more talent. Carolina has been the better team.
I got a funny feeling this is a good spot
play for Duke. Your thoughts, I know, I kind of.

Speaker 6 (30:14):
Agree with you because I think, you know, Carolina story
has been kind of cool because they were so bad
last year. Bluntly that I think they've caught a lot
of people by surprise. And frankly, part of the Carolina
story is they're the only team that's been winning on
the road in League. Flab and everybody else has taken
lost left and right, and up until Wednesday night, they
were taking They were winning everywhere they went. As a

(30:37):
matter of fact, they were the last Power Conference team
to take a loss in league play up a few
nights ago, and so I just bring it up because
I think everyone's been so immersed in the Carolina story
that people have quietly not been paying as much attention
to Duke. They struggled it out a conference play. I'm
with you. I actually think Duke pulls off surprise on
Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
That loss against Georgia Tech by North Carolina to day
was a tremendously bad loss. I think that will cost
North Carolina a number one seed. Believe you'll see finally,
I've seen it for my own personal preference, the best
for last. I've been waiting for Houston to win a
national championship for three years. They visited Kansas as a
short favorite, and of course Kansas lost to Iowa State

(31:18):
last week. They haven't been great in Big Twelve play
this year. Your thoughts. I got a feeling Kansas is
going to be a real tough out Saturday at home.
But it's not going to be easy.

Speaker 9 (31:29):
Your thoughts, burn I was thinking about this.

Speaker 6 (31:31):
This would be a fun fact for you to look
up because you have great knowledge on stuff like this.
The last time that Kansas and Kentucky were both ranked
in the top ten and we're both home underdogs. I
can't imagine that. Yeah before, Yeah, but it is at
least as we talked tonight at you know, eleven forty Pacific,
you know two forty AM Eastern, they're both underdogs. That

(31:53):
might change by timpaul. I'll just say this as somebody
who experienced fog Allen Field House for the first time
earlier this year when they played Yukon. I don't know
how anyone lives in that wins. I don't know how
anyone other than Kansas wins in that building. It is loud,
it is hot, the fans are right on top of it,
and you know, the thing is like Cameron seats like
eight nine thousand, bog Allen seats like sixteen thousand, and

(32:16):
it's the same like right on top of you environment.
And so I'm with you, is I think what you
said is accurate. I think Houston has as good of
a chance as anybody to cut down the nets. But
that's the team. Listen. One in two and two road
games this year, one was an overtime win on Monday
against Texas. I would lean Kansas at home, just because

(32:38):
I just think it is so hard to win in
that building. Worth not anybody like Kansas is arguably their
best player.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Kevin mcculluch I was about to ask Tuesday's game, Kevin
mccullar's got that bruise knees. Are you gonna play Saturday? Aaron?
Do you know?

Speaker 6 (32:50):
Yeah? I think the projections are that he will. I
have not heard anything like you know, super you know,
insidery on it. My hunch is that I think they
knew at home they could probably get away without playing
him against Oklahoma State, which is the worst team in
that league. But yeah, I would expect him to play again.
No super inside information. I'm not breaking any news here.

(33:12):
It's just kind of sort of informed speculation, if you will.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Aaron, great stuff. We are starting to see bracketology. I'm
paying particular attention. They think there might even be five
Mount West teams in. But we'll see gets starting right around.

Speaker 6 (33:26):
Gee, that's all I care about. That's all I care about.
What you say is gold, That's all I care about it.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
Listen, Aaron, have a great show Saturday night, you and
Jason Martin. It's a it's a It's what I call
a thinking man show. You guys dive into a lot
of thought provoking topics. Eight to eleven Pacific, eleven to
two Eastern. Get your popcorn ready, Jason Smith or Jason
Martin and of course Aaron Taurus. Aaron great stuff, and
I do want to get you back right before selection Sunday.
Enjoy your the rest of your evening.

Speaker 6 (33:53):
You know, I'm happy to join you. Burne, we'll talk
to it.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
Okay, all right, thank you, buddy. It's Aaron Torris, our
college Fox Sports Radio college basketball guru. All right, coming
up top of the hour, We're gonna have probably my favorite.
I've been anticipating this by far in terms of our
midnight hour. Your calls eight seven, seven, nine to nine
on Fox eight seven, seven, nine, nine sixty six, three

(34:15):
sixty nine. The callers have been outstanding. We are going
to dive into the Dan Campbell situation with Detroit and
the part B of the question will be your thoughts
on analytics. Your thoughts on are they to you an
inflexible anchor, a guideline? Do you like him? Do you
hate him? And by the way, no one should associate

(34:37):
Dan Campbell with analytics he is not an analytics guy.
If people think that you haven't done your homework. However,
Dan Campbell is a risk taker and those risks have
gotten the Lions to twenty two and seven in their
last twenty nine games. And when the Lions named Dan
Campbell their head coach in twenty twenty one, talked about

(35:00):
busting kneecamps, play an ultra aggressive and competing with great
passion and all those things. And he took Detroit from
a downtrodden franchise to literally minutes away from being in
their first Super Bowl ever. So we have to ask ourselves.
You live by the sword and die by the sword.
I get it, but look at the risk reward. Also,

(35:21):
things are situational. You could make a call, but if
you're right, you're a hero. If you're wrong, you're the
village idiot, just asked Pete Carroll. And you could talk
about the drop passes, the fumbles, the self inflicted Lions wounds,
but Campbell's decisions and then the subsequent execution are going
to be the things that will be talked about coming up.
I'm going to share with you which I thought was

(35:42):
the more egregious of the two decisions. But get your
fingers limber midnight the Midnight Hour. We want to hear
from you eight seven, seven, nine nine, six sixty three
sixty nine, the Dan Campbell decision and your thoughts in
general on the risk reward of analytics. By the way,

Speaker 2 (36:47):
All right back on the Bernie Frattle Show. Fox Sports Radio.
Come to live from the Taract dot Com studios here
in Las Vegas, ten minutes top of the hour, the
midnight hour, Your calls eight seven seven ninety nine on
Fox eight seven seven nine nine six sixty three six ' nine.
With seven minutes to go in the third quarter, the

(37:08):
Detroit Lions led the San Francisco forty nine ers twenty
four to ten, and it was fourth and three. They
had a chance to kick a field goal which would
have put the Niner lines up by three scores. Now
at that point, if you look at this thing objectively,
for the remainder of the game, the maximum amount of
possessions the Niners could have had were four. They would

(37:31):
have not only had assuming the Lions make that field goal,
which is more than a fifty percent probability, the Niners
would have had to not only score on three possessions,
they would have had to do it fast. They wouldn't
be able to afford seven minute drives, and then they
would have also had to stop the Lions. So the
long and the short of it is, the bottom line

(37:52):
is you have to question Dan Campbell's decision. Everybody will
remember the last one when the Lions trailed twenty seven
to twenty four and had a chance to tie it
up with the field goal, a forty seven yard field goal,
And I get it. I've heard all the numbers. You know,
Michael Badgley was only fifty percent between forty five and

(38:15):
forty nine yards. I've heard it all. But the truth
of the matter is, Dan Campbell, when you unilaterally go
forward on every fourth down, when you pass up an
opportunity for a potential three points is what he did
in the first half, which put the Lions out of
three scores. You can't automatically believe the next results is
going to turn in your favor just because the last

(38:37):
one didn't. That's erroneous thinking. Every fourth down is different,
every game is different, which requires different solutions predicated on
the current situation. Which is why I mentioned that this
whole thing has a context, it has a subtext, and
certainly it's situational. Again, if it's a random Sunday game
against the Carolina Panthers or the Seattle Seahawks in October,

(39:02):
maybe you do it. But on the road at the
forty nine ers, when the Lions have never been to
the Super Bowl, you left a lot of people in
the lurch and again, Dan Campbell made no apologies. He
can't have it both ways. He's the same guy who
got the Lions out of the ditch and they've won
twenty two of their last twenty nine games. You make

(39:23):
a decision in a competitive environment, sometimes you stand alone.
We all know that success has a thousand fathers, but
failure is an orphan. But what happened in the past
doesn't matter. Dan Campbell may have failed to take into
consideration the dynamic and the city of Detroit and the
history of the Lions and all things that go along

(39:46):
with that, And so we leave ourselves asking. Obviously, hindsight's
twenty twenty. This is where you get to be Monday
morning quarterback. It's the way it works. So I want
to hear from you, folks eight seven, seven, nine, nine,
six sixty three six nine, eight, seven, seven, nine and
nine on Fox. Do you support Dan Campbell's decision? Do
you live and die by the sword that's what got

(40:06):
on there in the first place, or or did he
blow it by going to the well one too many
times and not taking the situation into consideration. I'm Bernie Fraddle.
We're coming to you live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports
Radio Tarrac dot Com studios. Keep it locked and listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show on Fox Sports Radio. But
that's right, you heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show

(40:28):

Tarrac dot Com studios here in Las Vegas, almost Super
Bowl fifty eight. Tyrac dot com. We'll help you get
there and on matched selection, fast free shipping, free road
aster protection, over ten thousand recommended installers, tyrac dot com.
Phil Way tire buying should be well, you all saw

(40:48):
it last week. Dan Campbell took a field goal before
the half Lions took a a three score lead. Why
did he make different decisions in the second half? And
I want to get the people's stops say as usual,
everybody has stepped up big. The phone line is their packed? Why?
Because it's time. It's the midnight hour.

Speaker 1 (41:10):
It's right now, the midnight hour.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
Well, you know, we can talk about the drop pass
by Josh Reynolds, we can talk about Jami against Want,
we can talk about a lot. But you know why
this subject tonight is going to be so well, it's not.
I don't think it'll be polarizing. I think, well, it
might be polarizing, but without further ado, let's go out
to the phone lines. Let's open it up with Dave

(41:37):
from Phoenix. David, I know you've got Michigan roots, so
I'm sure you have some thoughts about the Lions and
their plight last Sunday. Do I ever?

Speaker 10 (41:45):
Bernie? The Lions last championship was in nineteen fifty seven
and the next year, nineteen fifty eight. I was born
in Detroit, so I felt this one's pretty hard. Now
there's something to be he said for being aggressive, but
Dan Campbell is too aggressive. And by way of example,

(42:06):
you remember the game in Dallas. They're down by seven,
they score a touchdown.

Speaker 6 (42:10):
Okay, they go for two.

Speaker 10 (42:11):
You can argue either way, going for two or kicking
the point.

Speaker 6 (42:15):
But when they had a penalty, it.

Speaker 10 (42:16):
Took him back to the seven yard line and he
still went for two.

Speaker 6 (42:19):
I thought that was ridiculous.

Speaker 10 (42:22):
Now we can come ahead to the game last week,
and as you said, midway through the third quarter, they're
up fourteen, they have a chance to get back to
a three score lead, and they decide to go for
the first down, even though there's no guarantee not only
that you're going to make the first down, but if

(42:43):
you do make the first down, you still may not
get a touchdown. You may have to settlefield field low anyway.
So I would have preferred going up by seventeen. But
even there I can argue for it. I can understand
his decision. But when you get to midway through the
fourth quarter, now you're down by three, you have a
chance to tie the game.

Speaker 6 (43:04):
Come on, God, You've got to kick the field goal.
You've got to tie the game.

Speaker 2 (43:08):
So bottom line, Dave, do you believe that Dan Campbell
essentially cost the Lions the chance to go to the
Super Bowl? You putting it on him?

Speaker 6 (43:15):
Well? I really do.

Speaker 10 (43:17):
And then you remember, right at the end of the game,
they have third and goal from the one yard line,
and amazingly enough, they call a running play, they don't
get in and they have to use a timeout, which
was absolutely crucial. That was a killer timeout.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
Yep, good stuff, Dave. I appreciate it, and you bring
up a lot of good points. I'm kind of glad
you brought up the Dallas game. My Moles told me
that why the reason Dan Campbell did that in Dallas?
Going for two three straight times. He told his team.
He says, I don't want to go to overtime and
on the road, hostile environment. We're going to win this

(43:53):
thing and get the hell out of here. And I
think he meant it so. And then, of course, you
know multiple time going for the you know, the fourth
down instead of taking the chance on the field goal.
I'm in agreement. It's hard to argue with you with
your logic there, Dave. So that's where're at. I was
also told I've made some calls, and I think Dan

(44:14):
Campbell believed we cannot stop this forty nine ers offense
in the second half, so we've got to get points.
But the problem is there's a risk reward and this
is about going to the super Bowl, and my gut
tells me bad. You might have made that field goal
at least tied it up, and you take your chances.
But that's why I want to hear from the people.
You've heard enough from me. Let's go back out to Michigan. Actually,

(44:35):
Greg Nelson from the up in Michigan and you Progreg
your thoughts on the lines debacle Sunday night.

Speaker 9 (44:41):
Well, first of all, you do what got you there?
All right, Dan Campbell went for it all year long.
You don't change because that's the championship game. If you're
a long ball team in baseball, do you all of
a sudden go small ball or vice versa. No, you
do what got you there. If they would have made
some key blocks on those goal life scenarios, Hey Jamison

(45:04):
missed the block right at the goal line, the kids
block would have got a touchdown. Reynolds haven't missed the
eighth grave play across the middle, right.

Speaker 2 (45:11):
Right, Yeah, that's all fair. Hey, Greg, hang on the
line because I mean, I like this call. I'll tell
you why. The most boring conversations in life is when
everybody agrees. So a question I have for you is,
right before the fourth and three that Dan Campbell went
for in the third quarter, and right before the fourth
down in the fourth quarter, it would have tied the game.

(45:31):
Were you saying, yeah, I'm glad he's going for What
was coming out of your mouth at that point?

Speaker 9 (45:35):
I have no qualms while going for it because one
the kicker they had was released earlier in the year,
if you got it back because of the released another kicker.

Speaker 2 (45:45):
So that was the.

Speaker 9 (45:45):
Problem for them long term, was their kicking game two.
In the second half, the forty nine ers were starting
to get together on moving to football.

Speaker 2 (45:54):
Cannot stop them.

Speaker 6 (45:56):
So three points is not good.

Speaker 2 (45:57):
Can get it done. You've got to try to.

Speaker 9 (45:58):
Get the sixth touchdown.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
It's much more valuable there.

Speaker 9 (46:02):
And they made those during the here, they didn't make
them during the hear.

Speaker 2 (46:04):
They would have got where they were fair. That's fair, Greg.
I appreciate the call, and I appreciate the alternative viewpoint.
I respect that. No wish to watch you here. Dave
stated his point and Greg stated their point. That's what
the Midnight Hour is all about, to have intelligent discussion
because neither thing either call or said is wrong. And

(46:25):
you could make a case with the lines had been
twenty two and seven with that's the aggressive nature. No,
I just am concerned slightly that sometimes these things are
are situational. But be that as it may, sometimes you
can't have it both ways. A Berto from San Diego,
you're up next. Your thoughts will be any.

Speaker 3 (46:45):
Two excellent to Bernie. Listen, Bernie, I'm going to give
you an analogy, but first let me shut it up.
I was watching the game with my son. We watched
both games and like I told you last week, or
maybe I told my son, I wanted the Lions to win.

(47:06):
What Don Campbell did all year long was amazing. And
here's the analogy. He reminded metactfully to my Dodgers. I
like the Dodgers. I followed them since I was born.
In the regular season, they play with analytics. When they
start the game, there's a right handed tiahure, so they

(47:27):
put the leftist. And then when the game is in
the middle that they start bringing the relievers. They're start
going to the rights. That's analytics for you. And they
play like that, and they can win a hundred games
in the regular season make it to the playoffs. The
thing is this, once you get to the playoffs, you
gotta throw the book of analytics away and you gotta

(47:48):
go with the field. As soon as Dan Campbell kept
his offense in the third quarter to go for the
fourth down, I told my son he should not do that.
This is not the regular season. It's Karta go for
the points because he's gonna even up everything and go
back by seventeen and the pressure goes to the Niners

(48:12):
instead of that. It was a great call. The play
too bad Reynolds dropped the ball, yep, but the momentum switch,
and you can see it in the Lions' faces. They're like, oh,
what happened here? And the next day the Niners drove
Karta touchdown and the following drive by the Lions, the

(48:35):
pressure was there and they fumbled the ball. That was
the end of it. And I like analytics in the
regular season keeping there once you're going to in the
post season, throw the book away.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
Go all right, they bear to good, good stuff, my man.
I want to make sure excellent call. I want to
make sure I get to everybody I would I do.
Want to just respectfully set the record straight. Dan Cambell
is not an analytics guy. I know a lot of
folks have attributed this decision to analytics. It's just how
Dan Campbell rolls. He is nothing to analytics, never actually
comes out of his mouth. I understand why people might

(49:09):
have that impression. But Alberto also kind of brings up
an interesting point, because are we upset at the decision
or the execution if the pass isn't dropped, if the
subsequent fumbles, et cetera. So it all melts together, which
makes this such a complicated conversation. Back out to the phones,
Tony from Michigan. Your thoughts on our beloved liance. Hey, Ernie,

(49:33):
how you doing good? Okay?

Speaker 11 (49:35):
So, I don't believe that Dan Campbell lost the game,
but I do believe, as Alberto said earlier, if he
had that the old Kenny Rogers tune, how does it go?
You got to know when to hold? If he would
have read the room and if he would have felt

(49:58):
that this intuitive feeling of when when to do this,
I completely believe that that's where greatness comes into coaching.
He would have won the game. And I just think
that I hope I'm wrong, but he got that Lion's
team got the first doubting of the curse. It is real,

(50:19):
whether it's the Bobby Lane curse or or the Kent.
You know they the sports bought it.

Speaker 6 (50:24):
The day Kenny all about it.

Speaker 11 (50:27):
Yeah, So so whatever it was, when it when it?
When it fell up that I've got the players that
hit his helmet, and then the Niners thought it ran
it in. You saw it right there that that stuff
doesn't happen. And Campbell got up there, and I love
how he owned it. It's emotional, uh, and he knew
He may be defined if six or seven years ago

(50:48):
by Bernie and the Lions maybe get to the second
round or lose, kind of pull the cowboys what the
cowboys have been doing. Dan Campbell will be known for
what happened Sunday in the long line of Lions. Yeah,
badness and mediocrity.

Speaker 2 (51:03):
You know you're speaking for Mistery, good stuff, Tony excellent call. Solomon,
hang tight, Poppy and san Diego hang tight. You're up
next eight seven, seven, nine, nine, six six three sixty nine.
We're gonna get to everybody and again Dan Campbell. People
can defend his call by saying he's been aggressive all season,
stuck to what worked for the team. But think about

(51:23):
this as well. That doesn't necessarily explain why Campbell went
conservative before halftime. It took the points to give the
Lions a seventeen point lead, so why was going up
seventeen before the half? Good enough Campbell for Campbell, but
not good enough in the third quarter. Want more of
your calls eight seven to seven ninety nine on Fox,

(51:44):
Solomon and Poppy Hank tight, You're up next. I'm Bernie Frattle.

Back out to the phone lines in the plight of

(52:04):
the Detroit Lions. Solomon from Los Angeles, You're up next.
What are your thoughts?

Speaker 6 (52:09):
Hey, Bernie, Thank you so much for take I call.

Speaker 12 (52:12):
I got so many things to see about this. I'm
going to try to narrow it down to three things.
Albe as to think flicked as I can.

Speaker 6 (52:19):
Number one, I'm an old dude. I'm seventy four.

Speaker 13 (52:22):
Quote George Allen, a RAMS coach from the sixties.

Speaker 12 (52:27):
Games are won and lost by special teams. You lost
by three points.

Speaker 14 (52:32):
You left six on.

Speaker 12 (52:33):
The field and two field goals.

Speaker 6 (52:35):
You take those back.

Speaker 12 (52:36):
You just won that game.

Speaker 6 (52:37):
In regulation number two.

Speaker 12 (52:42):
He violated what a coach is supposed to do.

Speaker 13 (52:45):
The main thing what a coach is supposed to do
put your players in a position to win. First one,
you didn't give your team a chance to get some
more points. And the second one, which was completely egregious.
You didn't need to let them get a chance to
catch up and tie the game. You put them at
a disadvantage to win, but you did not do your

(53:05):
job and put them in.

Speaker 12 (53:06):
A position to win. And finally about Dan Campbell, there's
a little rough. I know the dealer, I mean I
know his feelings. Hey, no goods, no glory, no Dan,
no brains, no glory.

Speaker 14 (53:20):
You have to think, thank you. You have to see
a thinking coach. You just can't be an emotional coach
and that type of game in that situation, and he
let his.

Speaker 12 (53:30):
Emotions get the best of them.

Speaker 2 (53:31):
Stand alone, Solomon, because there's a lot to unpacked there.
And one of the questions have been on the phone
with my guys Detroit all week and is it you know,
is it risk or is it ego? By the way,
great pull on George Allen, the legend never had a
losing season once, even his final year at Long Beach
State before he passed away and they canceled the program.

(53:53):
George Allen was winner. Excellent call, Solomon appreciated man. Thanks,
don't be a stranger, Poppy, and diego you're up next.
What have we got tonight? Poppy?

Speaker 6 (54:02):
Hey, Bernie, you're good.

Speaker 2 (54:04):
How are you doing good, buddy?

Speaker 3 (54:06):
Yo?

Speaker 15 (54:06):
Well, you know Dan Campbell if you guys saw the game,
So he's been playing very aggressive. Remember and the when
the Ham's gonna end and he went for the field goal.
Then it was I believe fourth and something, and then
he decided to go for the pickle. He should have
just gone for the touchdown because the lines were giving
all their wills and then they would.

Speaker 6 (54:23):
Have been up.

Speaker 15 (54:24):
I believe I set up twenty four, they would have
done touchdown. They would have been twenty eight.

Speaker 3 (54:29):
Right.

Speaker 2 (54:30):
Remember remember remember Poppy, they were on the three year line.
It was fourth down and the Niners were about to
get the ball to start the second half. That put
him up our three scores. Yeah, so I go ahead.

Speaker 6 (54:42):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 15 (54:42):
But what I'm saying here the conspiracy there is is
my mind. In my mind, he should have gone for
the touchown. You're playing all aggressive. I was upset. I
was like, wait, why are you going for the field
goal right now?

Speaker 6 (54:51):
If you're going to aggressive all year?

Speaker 16 (54:52):
Luck?

Speaker 15 (54:53):
Why I know it's no analytics or nothing. I think
he should have just gone for the touchdown. Even though
the players on the Sunland they were happy. They were
saying bye bye, bye bye to the soul.

Speaker 2 (55:03):
That turned out to be a mistake.

Speaker 6 (55:04):
It c J.

Speaker 2 (55:06):
Gardner Johnson wave into the crowd.

Speaker 15 (55:07):
I saw that, yeah, right, and it haunt them And
I think you should would have gone for a pasand
I think the Lions would have won.

Speaker 6 (55:14):
Bernie, what do you think on that?

Speaker 3 (55:15):
That's my take.

Speaker 2 (55:16):
Appreciate your call, as always, Poppy, every Friday night. We're
never going to know. It's a hypothetical, and the world's
a vexing enough places without hypotheticals. I can tell you
that it will go down as a terrible coaching decision.
It's so hard to get to this point. The Lions
had the twenty four to seven lead in the first half,
and they took advantage of Niners missfield goals and even

(55:38):
got an interception, and even before halftime, Detroit had the
balt the nine ers three yard line, which you just
pointed out. Poppy Campbell decided to kick a field goal
that increased the lead to seventeen points rather than go
for a touchdown on fourth and goal. That appeared to
be a wise decision, but then Campbell made a different
decision in the third quarter. San Franz had kicked a
field goal and their opening possession of the second half,

(56:00):
which is a win for the Lions defense that made
it twenty four to ten. Lions get the ball back,
drive down to the Niners territory. Now we're all away
midway through the third quarter, fourth and two on the
San fran twenty eight. But rather than attempt a forty
five yardfield goal to get to lead back to seventeen points,
well you saw what happened. Campbell opted to go for it.

(56:23):
Golf got pressured through the pass that Josh Reynolds. He
dropped the pass that would have been a first down,
that gave the ball to the forty nine ers. They
get right down to the five yard line, Blah blah
blah Liner score. And then right after they get the
ball back to the Lions fumbled by Jamier Games and
you could feel it slipping away. Go back out to
the phone, Lions, Jerome from Charleston, South Carolina, what say

(56:44):
you tonight on this Lions discussion, Bernie, have some.

Speaker 17 (56:48):
I have some pertinent information I need to share with
you right away. I found out I was doing some
research or to share a Super Bowl in the officials
that are gonna be officiating the game. And I found
out one of the officials that's assigned to the Gifts
used to play for the forty nine ers. You played
in the NFL for several years.

Speaker 13 (57:08):
Do you know about that?

Speaker 2 (57:09):
Yes? I did. I got my buddy, Joe Gibbs, the
NFL stats guy, rough stands. Yeah, Well, you know, we'll see,
we'll see how that that pans out. Go ahead.

Speaker 18 (57:19):
Oh and also I think moms needs to read racer's
level of play. So all right, appreciate it pretty well.
All right, buddy, appreciate your call. We'll dive into the
Super Bowl a lot next week.

Speaker 2 (57:30):
We're going to also get into this Taylor Swift and
Travis Kelsey situation. I don't know why the hell people
are swepping arms. I do have good news later the show.
Turns out Taylor's flight schedule is going to allow her
to land in Las Vegas about dinner time on Saturday night,
so she's going to be at the game. That might
piss some of you off and make some of you happy.

(57:51):
The chef, Kevin Wyrett, you've been listening, I'm sure to
these calls. What are your thoughts on what happened to
the Lion Sunday.

Speaker 8 (57:56):
Yeah, I think Dan Campbell was largely responsible. I'm getting
kind of Nick Sirianni vibes in the sense that he
wears his emotions on his sleeve a little too much,
which when you're winning works out well, but when you're
losing can kind of drag you down.

Speaker 2 (58:10):
And I kind of was.

Speaker 8 (58:11):
Kind of put off guard afterwards when he said, oh,
this is probably our best chance to win it, Like, yeah,
that's a great thing to tell your team after a loss.
I mean, I know the Lions, They've got a good
team going forward, So I don't know why he had
that attitude afterwards, but I don't know also know why
that he decided not to go aggressive in that game

(58:32):
when normally he's done so well at it, especially in
the playoffs, and that's not a time to be timid.
The playoffs, you got to play to win as opposed
to playing not to lose, which is more suited for
the regular season. So yeah, I do think Dan Campbell
was largely responsible for that loss, and I think he
does need to temper his emotions just a little bit

(58:54):
to kind of keep that team maybe a little more
level going forward. But I do think they have good
potential down the line. In the future seasons, we'll see
what happened.

Speaker 2 (59:03):
I have a first play schedule next year. You have
to see it. It's going to be fairly brutal. So
hard to get to the NFC Championship game. The stars
really lined up. The Lions had not one but two
home games, But we shall see. Shay, what are your
thoughts on the Lion situation Sunday night and when it
was happening, do you remember how you might have reacted?

Speaker 19 (59:24):
Yeah, I mean, to be honest, when it was happening,
I didn't think he was mismanaging it at all. Like
I think he was kind of assuming that they would
get the touchdown. I mean, the forty nine ers have
had one of the highest octane offenses that we've seen
in the NFL, not even just this here, but in
the NFL. So it's like, I think he was just
playing the way he's always played. I mean, if he

(59:44):
didn't threaten the fourth round plays at any time, or
like try the flea flick er plays like over and
over again, like it would have just been a lot
easier to anticipate and defend, and I think they wouldn't
even gotten that many touchdowns or they would have even
been in that situation to begin with. So I mean,
I think his style of play is the only reason
that got there. And I mean, remember this is a

(01:00:05):
team that's not far from own sixteen seasons, so.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
Well, you're not wrong. I mean they look just a
week before against Tampa Bay, everybody forgot about the risks
he took that day and they panned out, And look,
I realize that this is who Dan Campbell is. He
is emotional, He's going to err on the side of incaution,
He's not going to be cautious, and a lot you know,

(01:00:33):
at some point this whole conversation falls on, is that
the decision you don't like or was it the execution
because had pass has not been dropped and fumbles not happened,
it all kind of to meld together and it was
unreal and it turned into just it turned into the
kind of experience that only Lions fans who suffered with
this team, many folks all the way back fifty years,

(01:00:55):
can relate to more so than any other city. Literally
at least Buffalo has been to four Super Bowls. Mark Ramsey,
did you have thoughts on this, like.

Speaker 20 (01:01:05):
You were saying. Playing armchair quarterback, I thought the basic
idea is to score as many times as you can
to get to a super Bowl, or for any game.
And if the various series in the game, if the
coach didn't, you know, do his best to you know,

(01:01:26):
if you could try to score a touchdown, do a touchdown.
But if it's only a field goal, just put points
on the board because if anything, you just want to
build the number because you don't know what the other
team is capable of at any given time. So just
put points on the board and just make sure you
have more than they have at the end of the game.

Speaker 2 (01:01:45):
Just do your best to score fair enough. And I
think just in generalities, the attempted field goal would have
been a higher percentage than going forward. So again, hindsight's
always twenty twenty. We'll keep the phone lines open for
the remainder of the men night Our eight seven seven
ninety nine one Fox. But I want to switch gears
as well. It's time to give Brock Purdy his flowers. Okay,

(01:02:09):
I don't know why people haven't before. He's been typecast.
You can typecast him all you want, but when it
mattered most in the situation demanded greatness. Has he done it.
He's done it twice when it mattered most in the playoffs.
We'll talk about it coming up, but first let's go
back to our guy, to the chef, Kevin Wyatt with the.

Speaker 8 (01:02:26):
Latest Yeah, big knight in the NBA and a big
night for Nikola Jokic's twenty seven points, twenty two rebounds,
twelve assists yet another triple double as the Nuggets beat
the Trailblazers one twenty one oh way Denver now twenty
and four on their home Corp Pelicans over the Spurs
one fourteen, one thirteen. Zion Williamson had thirty three points

(01:02:48):
as he helps propel New Orleans two the win with
Victor Wim and Yama gave a good performance himself. The
rookie was sixteen points, fourteen rebounds and seven assists under
top the Hornets one twenty six one oh six Magic
upset the Timberwolves one oha two one oh six, the
Warriors one twenty one, one oh one winners against the

(01:03:08):
Memphis Grizzlies, the Rockets blast the Raptors won thirty five two,
one oh five one oh six. Excuse me, Kings and
Pacers at Sacramento, where they won thirty three one to
twenty two win as Devonte Sebonis had twenty six points,
eleven rebounds and at seven assists. Hawks upset the Suns
one twenty nine one to twenty in spite of thirty
five points, eight rebounds eight assists from Kevin Durant heat over.

(01:03:30):
The Wizards won ten one oh two, Clippers pound the
Pistons won thirty six two one twenty five. Kawhi had
thirty three points for Los Angeles. Coll It hoops only
a couple of ranked teams in action. Number twenty one
Dayton gets by Saint Bonaventure seventy six to seventy one,
but number thirteen Creighton upset Butler takes him down in

(01:03:52):
Omaha ninety nine to two ninety eight. Back to you, Bernie, all.

Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Right, thanks Kevin. So the brock Per discussion is the
next hot topic, and it has been most of the year.
He's been typecast as the quote prototypical game manager. And
you heard me say this months ago, and I repeated
it over and over and over again. You know who
was a good game manager, Joe Montana. You know who else?

(01:04:18):
Guy named Tom Brady. Every NFL quarterback who has had
success is a game manager, But the label is basically
a pejorative when you're discussing quarterback discourse in the National
Football League. But you have to manage the offense within
the framework of a meticulous offense that's constructed by very

(01:04:38):
bright people in the National Football League. And Brock Purdy,
because of his recognition, because of his ability to process
so quickly, does it as well as anybody I've seen. Now,
I get it. He can't throw a football through a
brick wall, nor does he need to. And he may
not win the Olympics in the one hundred meters, but
seems like all the quarterbacks who can when the Olympics

(01:05:00):
one hundred hundred meters never seem to get in the
Super Bowl, do they. So if you're telling me that's important,
I will tell you that what's more important is when
you are involved in a situation and you make plays, repeatedly,
make plays at the critical part of the game to
help your team win games. I don't care if you
call me a game manager, a system quarterback, or a

(01:05:23):
ham and cheese sandwich. The Niners are in the Super Bowl,
and many of the other star quarterbacks are not. And
if you don't want to give brock Purty his due,
that's on you. This came to a head Monday. I
was like banging my head against the wall. You know,
the man crush that Shannon Sharp has on Rock Purdy

(01:05:44):
is getting bothersome hashtag sarcasm. He can't wait to throw
him under the bus. I don't know what the hell's
going on there. There's some agenda that's very uncomfortable to me.
Dani Rolowski former Lions quarterback, and I cover that to
sixteen team. Dan Orolowski was started some games a year.
He ran out of the end zone. You know all that.
But Dan played in the NFL. There was the thing

(01:06:04):
or two about the position trying to explain to Shannon Sharp,
and all Shannon Sharp was saying was, well, what are
you going to say if he has a bad game
in the Super Bowl? See what are you gonna say? Then? Okay, Shannon,
the world is a vexing enough place without engaging in
mindless hypotheticals. Why create problems that don't exist yet and
try to solve them? Why? Well, because you don't like

(01:06:27):
Brock Purdy, don't act like you do. I don't know
what the guy has to do. You can call him
a game manager, you can call him Billy Bardy. But
Sunday the forty nine ers needed something more. The season
was on the line. The bottom line is their hopes
to get into the Super Bowl were slipping away. The
Niners needed brock Purdy to become what they needed him

(01:06:50):
to be, and that's a playmaker, a difference maker. What
did rock Purdy do in the second half thirteen sixteen
for one hundred and seventy four yards at a touchdown,
no interceptions. Hope, By the way, he ran for forty
nine yards in the second half. That's the best evidence
he's not merely you know a guy who sits in

(01:07:10):
the back of the bus while the rest of the
team plays football. He was driving the bus. Rushed for
fifty two yards that day, Hope. By the way, not
for nothing. Lamar Jackson rushed for fifty four yards. Talk
amongst yourselves, think whatever you want. Ask what happened in
that locker room after the game. Ask Kyle Shanahan to
a man, they almost said. The plays brock Purty made

(01:07:34):
not just with his arm, but with his feet is
scrambling and his legs were the difference between winning and
losing facts, getting out of the pocket, moving the chains
on first downs actually fairly explosive plays. He was running
away from Brian Branch. How does that happen if he
set a stew bum? He competed his ass off Sunday.

(01:07:54):
That game was not easy for the forty nine Ers.
Brock Purty kept grind. He was unbelievable in the second half.
In the divisional round, Purdy had some struggles, but he
came up clutch late on the final drive when it
managed most, moving the Niners down the field for the
game winning score. Then he won uped himself last Sunday

(01:08:18):
in the NFC Championship game when the Niners were seventeen
points down five consecutive drives turning on twenty seven points
that completely turned the tables and flip the script on
the Lions. Brock Purdy is a leader. You can think
whatever you want. You can root for him to fail.
I get that athletically, if you really want to do this, fine,

(01:08:40):
He's not on the level of mar Jackson, who is
the MVP, or even at Josh Allen, or even at
Joe Burrow or Justin Herbert. Fine, But to treat Brock
Purdy as if he's some third rate stubum, fourth class citizen.
Don't tell that to the forty nine ers. Christian McCaffrey said,
I don't have enough good things to say about Brock

(01:09:02):
perty All he has done since he has been in
San Francisco is play at an elite level. And if
you understand what the position of quarterback requires in the
National Football League, then using the word elite as an
adjective is appropriate. Everything starts with your quarterback. You play
the position with your eyes, You receive the ball, you

(01:09:25):
make mental snapshots, comparing your pre snap reed to your
post snap reed, and then you have to execute in
less than two seconds and get the damn ball out
of your hands. Listen, it's all about processing coverages, reading recognitions,
and again, you have less than two seconds to execute.

(01:09:45):
I don't care how fast you run, high you jump,
or if you can throw a ball further than Uncle Rico.
You can't hold the damn ball. You've got to get
it out of your hand. To do that, that requires recognition.
Not only that, he has proven he's a great leader,
and he took a lot of heat for no reason,
and I get it. You're out there saying, well, he

(01:10:06):
doesn't have a big arm. Well, everybody has a base
level of talent to be in the National Football League.
You can't throw a ball through a brick wall. He
can't throw it ninety six yards like Jeff George did
in the combine back forty years ago. How'd that work out?
He doesn't have the blazing athleticism. It might not be
a highlight reel, although if you looked at some of
those runs last Saturday, tell me those weren't explosive plays.

(01:10:31):
Sometimes he's not always accurate. I get it. He's had
interceptions dropped to convince you, well, maybe he's clean, living
devotion to the game. But at the same time, he's
also put up some astounding statistics. He's had some moments
that have actually had some people suggesting he might be
the MVP of the league. I don't know that I

(01:10:52):
would rise to that level, but I think he's a
championship caliber quarterback and all that was evident in the
first half on Sunday. He was a version of really
people scoffed at him. He completed just forty seven percent
of his passes the first two quarters, including a pick.
That's set up a Troy to touchdown and missed some throws.
So where am I going with it? It's not what
happens to you, it's how you react. Then Brock Purty emerged.

(01:11:17):
He's kind of this baby face kid. He's got this
wholesome smile. He's, you know, the boy next door. For
lack of a you know, that's a lousy you know. Look,
the bottom line is this ask the forty nine ers
players asked to Sean Gibson, he said, I never lost
faith in this guy. I've been saying it all year.
You get a guy like that at a controller game

(01:11:38):
and knows where to go with the ball and gets
it there. I'm happy he's on my team. I never
worry because when Brock Purty really needs to put up points,
that's when he's at his best. You're not even giving
him credit for what he did. Sunday, Shannon Sharp, what
if few to have lost, you'd have been dancing, but
you'd have loved every minute of it. Wouldn't you be
a little bit more objective? With all due respect, Shannon Sharp,

(01:12:01):
He's been around the block. He's a smart guy, but
for some reason, he's got it in for Brock Purdy
long in the short of it is maybe it's because
mister irrelevant, you know, is not allowed to be successful,
but maybe that has created a chip. He's a little
toughness more than people realize. He made a lot of
really good throws Sunday to Juwan Jennings third and four,

(01:12:22):
the Niners down seventeen, kept a dry alive. He scrambled,
stopped short of the line of scrimmage, threw a pass
across his bier to the middle. It was a bit
of an alley up. However, he knew Jennings was six
foot four and had a six foot five wings band
and caught the ball. He said, adjusted his route. Here's
the key, Brock Purdy is not afraid of pressure. He
might look rattled sometimes, but not enough to shake him

(01:12:45):
up into a shell. He's got a will to win.
And that took over Sunday. The play of the game
that you've seen on highlight reels over and over and
over again. That deep chuck to Brandon Nayuk with him being,
you know, scrambling around, and they sighted adjusting his routes
and the Niners are down two touchdowns and the defense
had just come up with a massive turnover. Perty wasn't

(01:13:06):
looking to play it safe. He was trying to make
a play. He knew the Niners needed it, and he
came up with it. Scrambled to his left, scrambled who
was right. Somehow looked downfield, saw Brandon Ayuk, who sid
adjusted his route and put the ball in the money,
and he says, I'm not gonna just be stupid and
throw the ball up. Brandon Ayuk is one on one,
I'm gonna take the opportunity, and that kind of game,

(01:13:27):
it's a kind of play the team needed. But Brock
Purdy is savvy enough to know that by reading that
situation and executing properly, he gave his guy a shot
to make a play. He knew the Lions had a
single safety who was hovering over the middle of the field,
and when Samuel cut on a crossing route, the safety

(01:13:47):
went with him. That left Ayuk one on one of
the cornerback Kendell Vildor. He said, hey, we all saw
it live when he said it was happening. Look, the
Niners moved off of Jimmy Garoppolo because the Liners couldn't
win in a Super Bowl without a quarterback willing to
hit the deep ball. And I thought Jimmy Garoppolo was
pretty good. Brock Purty's better. For all of Garoppolo's success,

(01:14:10):
Scott's tell us he had a real hesitancy to throw
the ball downfield, and that kind of pulled a ceiling
on the Niners offense. Then they drafted Trey Lance. You
remember him well, you know Rock Purty checked that Groppolo
was also supposed to be a game manager. Great, Trey
Lance was supposed to be a game breaker. And if
this is so easy, where you know brock Purty just

(01:14:33):
laces up his shoes and goes on the field, why
couldn't Trey Lance do it? Well, they ended up with
Rock Purty, who turns out can scramble, can push the
ball downfield. The truth of the matter is the forty
nine Ers lost in the Super Bowl four years ago
because they couldn't score in the fourth quarter. That's when
Patrick Mahomes he was turning himself into the legend, but
the forty nine Ers offense stifled. Now, Purdy may not

(01:14:55):
out Dual Holmes, but it's not off the table. I'm
really looking forward to watching what's happening. Call it Rock Purty,
what you want but the truth of the matter is
call him a winner. Coming up, we flip quickly back
to the NBA. Why well, I gave the Knicks their
flowers early in the show, but the Miami Heat they're struggling,

(01:15:17):
and that's one of the reasons I believe in the
Nicks so strongly. And we do have a couple more
callers we're going to get to coming up. Steve from
Kansas City. Hang tight, I'm Bernie Frattle. We're come to
your live from the Fox Sports Radio studios here in
Las Vegas. Tirack dot Com. Keep it locked it listening
to the Bernie Frattle Show, Fox Sports Radio. All right,
back on the Bernie Fraddle Show, Fox Sports Radio, Come
to your life from the Tarrat dot com studios here

(01:15:39):
in Las Vegas. To keep to two am Pacific, five
a m Eastern. Final thoughts on the lines and how
it ended for them Sunday night. Back out to the phone,
Steve from Kansas City. You want to talk about Rock.

Speaker 16 (01:15:53):
Purty Your thoughts, Hey, Bernie xoy monologue on the Rock Perty.
I think that's one of the best ones I've heard
on any form of media than I called you last
week and correctly predicted that he's Tagnola would shut down
Lamar Jackson, and we've got plenty of time to prepare

(01:16:15):
for this game. I think it's going to be a
great chess match from giving Andy Reid two weeks. And
I think the crucial thing is that Willie Gay came
back this week to practice. And I wouldn't I know
how this is going to go, that that rock party
may have some difficulty and then everyone's going to crush him.

(01:16:36):
But you were correct and saying that you know this
is this is going to be the greatness of Magnola
becoming the greatest coordinator of all time in this game
that most most likely he's going to be able to
give him fits. But Andy, Andy's going to have two
weeks to prepare and it could be a surprising each

(01:17:01):
maybe two touchdown victory. I would I would take Travis
Kelcey at anytime touchdowns for sure, bet at plus one
oh five. But I just don't understand why it seems
like there's there's a lot of people over value talent
based from San Francisco's standpoint, rather than experience. That's that's

(01:17:26):
what kind.

Speaker 6 (01:17:26):
Of gets me.

Speaker 16 (01:17:27):
We've got We've got another week of Brenna. But I
just don't understand why that why mahomes and they don't
get the respect, uh that that San Francisco always seems
to get. It's kind of the fuddling to me, you
know that that this this always happens, that they they

(01:17:49):
look at the roster and say, well, San Francisco is
obviously more talented. Well, you know, experience in guile sometimes
will well trump trump talent in space?

Speaker 6 (01:18:00):
What do you think about that?

Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
So are you referring to the betting line? Is that
it's Steve because the Niners are a two point favorite.
That's that's merely based on power ratings. And you know,
Las Vegas is not in the prediction business or the
fortune telling business. They're just trying to create equal action.
But look, I'm with you. The Chiefs to me, are

(01:18:23):
going to be very tough, dangerous out because they do
have a hell of a lot of experience. This is
where they live. Is Steve still there? All right? Well
that's that's a good call and we're going to dive
into this next Saturday a little bit more on Super
Bowl Eve. Look, a football game is a chess match.
It's with high speed collisions and all of a sudden

(01:18:46):
this I think this Chiefs team honestly looks like a
team of destiny. I haven't placed a bet on the
game yet, but what was the narrative a month ago. Well,
Patrick Mahomes will have to play his first road game,
and they didn't look particularly impressive against Miami in those
freezing temperatures. Then they went into Buffalo and the Chiefs
do with the Chiefs do. And then they go into

(01:19:07):
Baltimore and Steve is right. They bottled up Lamar Jackson
and put you know, the decided to put the game
on his shoulders. And people can say, well, the raven
should have run the ball more, but they didn't really
run the ball that effectively. The long and the short
of it as is, the Chiefs did what they needed
to do. You've got this combination between Andy Reid and
Patrick Mahomes and they're like the old New York Yankees

(01:19:27):
when Casey Stekel once said people can't beat the Yankees
because when they get stuck staring at the pinstripes. I
think teams stare at this Chief's red helmet. I know
the Buffalo Bills do, and it's a problem. It's gonna
be a great game. But I gotta tell you right now,
I've gone to my head. I feel like Kansas City
probably gets it done. We'll break it down more heavily
later and then next week coming up. Bill Belichick no job,

(01:19:50):
but Mike McDonald got one. We chop it up, keep
it locked. The Bernie Frattle Show, Well that's right, you
heard the man. The Bernie Fraddle Show keeps rolling right along.
My name is Bernie Fraddle. We are coming to you
live from the tiraq dot com studios here in Las Vegas,
home of Super Bowl fifty eight. Tyrack dot Com will
help you get there, an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping,

(01:20:11):
free road as a protection, and over ten thousand recommended installers.
Tyrack dot com the way tire buying should be. Bill
Belichick will not be coaching for the first time in
forty nine years in twenty twenty four, but Mike McDonald
will be. Not Michael McDonald from the Doobie Brothers, Mike

(01:20:34):
McDonald's former defensive coordinator at Michigan and with the Baltimore Ravens,
and he takes over for another legend, Pete Carroll. Pete
Carroll and Bill Belichick it looks like we'll be sitting
this one out in twenty twenty four. Now Saturday night,
we're going to get into some possibilities. I can actually
see Bill Belichick joining in twenty twenty five. And these

(01:20:57):
are legit. There could be as many as AID openings
again next year. But a lot of folks were scratching
their head about the Mike McDonald hiring this late in
the game. But the Seattle Seahawks have made their decision
and they're not just hiring a coach. They're hiring a
coach to replace Pete Carroll Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald.

(01:21:18):
He will be the new Seahawks coach, and by the way,
apparently he'd been the top target all along for Seattle
and they were willing to wait for him even if
the Ravens had made this Super Bowl. So this is
a guy who's been around basically on Baltimore's staff for
nine years, aside from one year at Michigan. But he's

(01:21:39):
received lots of laudatory compliments for his work with the
Ravens defense. By the way, Mike McDonald's was also highly
regarded for the work he did with Michigan in twenty
twenty one, helping him win their first Big Ten title
in seventeen years. And I also I'm hearing that the
Washington Commanders had interest in Mike McDonald, but the Seahawks

(01:22:02):
had the upper hand. Apparently they were the front runner
all along. He's thirty six years old, so Mike McDonald
is the league's youngest head coach. Belichick seventy two, Pete
Carroll seventy one, Mike McDonald thirty six. It also leaves
the Commanders, well, they got their man two, Dan Quinn,
and I know people scratch their heads, but he looks

(01:22:24):
forty four and forty three got the team to a
Super Bowl. I know people were up at arms about
the defensive performance Dallas had at the end of the season,
but owners don't think that way. Okay, to one day,
there's not a season make Dan camp or Dan Quinn
was largely credited for Dallas's extremely potent defense the last

(01:22:45):
two years. I know they didn't do well in the playoffs,
but that wasn't on Dan Campbell. That was on a
guy named Dak Prescott. In my humble opinion, again, if
you want to overreact to one game and It's like
the joke about George Clooney walking around them all one
day with his fly down one day, but it doesn't
disavow the accomplishments of his career. But I digressed. Now,

(01:23:06):
I would be willing to bet a few shekels that
very few people outside of Baltimore and unless you were
a college football nerd, you did not know who Mike
McDonald was. All of a sudden, now he is taking
over for a legend in Seattle, and people are wondering why.
But people who really know the way to score is

(01:23:30):
freely say this hire is a home run. Look at
the resume for Mike McDonald. Okay, Now, on twenty ten,
Pete Carroll took the Seahawks job after nearly a decade
at US Seed. You know what happened at the end there,
Mike McDonald. I guess what I'm going to share with
you is that, look, talented people get opportunities. And there's

(01:23:52):
a reason Mike McDonald's had such a incredibly rapid ascent.
And here's frankly how rapid it's been. Ten When Kara
was taking over for the Seahawks, Mike McDonald was in
his first year as a grad assistant at Georgia. He'd
been a high school football coach for two years while
he was actually in college. He was only twenty two.
Then from there the rise was very quick. He had

(01:24:15):
a stint as a quality control assistant for three seasons,
and then he jumped to the Ravens as a coaching
intern in twenty fourteen. By twenty twenty, he was the
linebackers coach. Then came the Jim Harball musical Chairs, the
Jim Harbaugh John Harball musical Chairs. McDonald left John Harbaugh's
staff after seven seasons as Baltimore to become Jim's defensive

(01:24:39):
coordinator at Michigan. Instant overnight success taken over for Don Brown.
That team got to the playoffs. They were statistically very good. Yes,
they got smashed by Georgia, but they beat Ohio State
and won the first Big Ten title in seventeen years
mich Mike McDonald had a lot to do with that.
Then Mike McDonald le left Jim Harball after one year

(01:25:02):
to become John Harball's defensive coordator at Baltimore. Follow that, now,
just after two years as an NFL coordinator, Mike McDonald
is now the league's youngest NFL coach, one year younger
than thirty seven year old Girod Mayo in New England. Now,
talk to anybody in Baltimore, talk to the organization, talk

(01:25:25):
to the media, talk to the fans. They're going to
tell you that Mike McDonald is legit. Baltimore has had
top five defenses per DVOA in both of McDonald's years,
including this year, Baltimore finished first. And if you just
google a little bit, you can see how Mike McDonald

(01:25:46):
has succeeded so quickly at every stop he's been at
and how he almost left coaching at one point too,
because being an NFL coach is a different struggle, But
Mike McDonald is not a guy you bet against. Another thing.
By the way, you might find curious both Mike McDonald
and Jared Mayo, they're not alone in their quick climbs

(01:26:08):
to get to the top jobs in the NFL. And yes,
there's only thirty two of them. Just look at Dave Canalis.
He is now the new man with the Carolina Panthers.
He was only one year as an offensive coordinator for
Tampa Bay, but he obviously did a very good job
at Baker Mayfield and that offense. So when you look
at the coaching carousel as it were, even in the

(01:26:33):
college ranks, Calin de Boor he takes over the premier
program in the country, I believe, Alabama, just four years
after being an offensive coordinator at Indiana. So look, we're
in a changing world and the young hip new offensive
mind genius now defensive mind genius Mike McDonald. These guys

(01:26:56):
are finding their way into these top jobs for a reason.
And here's kind of an interesting factoid for you. Pete
Carroll and Bill Belichick, as I just mentioned him, Intego respectively,
seventy two years old and seventy one years old. Their
replacements McDonald Mayo, they're a combined seventy three years old.

(01:27:17):
There you have it. Now, Why wasn't Bill Belichick hired?
It seemed inevitable that, according to certain reports, that the
Atlanta Falcons were maybe close that deal. Their owner, Arthur Blank,
has gone big name hunting for coaches for a while.

(01:27:41):
He made a shot at Joe Gibbs many years ago.
The legendary Joe Gibbs didn't get him, and there were
a couple of other ones. He ends up with Rahem Morris,
So I think it is a very good hire. And
we come to find out that people, I guess we
didn't listen closely. That Belichick and the Falcons was never
really a sure thing. Both sides were kind of gathering
information about each other. They wanted to see where, you know,

(01:28:02):
the fit would be on both sides. It was really
basically just a fact finding mission because every organization is
a power structure, right, but Bill Belichick has his own
power structure, and would it be a fit, would it
be the right fit? And Arthur Blank wanted to make
sure he kept his leadership structure and tack. And one

(01:28:23):
thing we found out later that I didn't know really
is that Bill Belichick has really kind of an icy
cold relationship with Falcons president Rich McKay. And apparently that
might have been the primary reason why the parties decided
they should not work together and they moved on. So
the bottom line is that, you know, Bill Belichick had

(01:28:45):
very narrow fits with many of these teams, and the
Falcons were very sold on Raheem Morrise according to a
lot of you know, league sources. Now, if you're just
looking at blind resumes, Bill Belichick's resume is gonna trump
any coaches, but in a higher process and sometimes even
historically the Falcons, at least Arthur Blank felt that past

(01:29:06):
accomplishments weren't as important as to what someone could bring
them in a future. Remember Raheem Morris was there three
years ago as the interim coach, did a pretty good job.
I think the Falcons started out like Owen seven that year,
got Oen six or something, and they were like four
and seven under Raheem Morris, and they played very well,
all right. And the truth of the matter is the

(01:29:29):
Seahawks and the Washington commanders were never going to really
consider Bill Belichick. That was a total long shot, right,
And people have quietly wondered, why would you let Bill
Belichick leave? Why would you let Tom Brady leave? And
Bill in free agency? If you're Bill Belichick, why would
you fight for him? And they don't understand that the
fact that there really was not a great succession plan.

(01:29:50):
Cam Newton really didn't work out draft. You know, Mac
Jones hasn't really been developed in any measurable degree. Mack
Jones has had three offensive coordinators. None of these things
bode well for Bill Belichick. But Saturday night, I'm going
to give you potential multiple destinations that Bill Belichick could
end up next year. And I'm serious. When you hear

(01:30:11):
me out, you might say, well, that's possible, so don't
rule it out. Remember he's fourteen wins behind Don Shula.
I would not close the chapter on Bill Belichick just yet.
He didn't forget to coach. And I think you depending
on what happens in places like New York next year,
or Dallas or Philadelphia, even Kansas City. What if Andy

(01:30:33):
Reid retires he's sixty five? What if they win the
Super Bowl. I'm going to get to all that Saturday night,
because we're not done with his Belichick discussion. By the way,
football fans, be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio
every Saturday morning beginning nine a m. Eastern six am
Pacific for Countdown to kick Off presented by BETMGM, Brian
no rich Orenberger, betting analyst Jared Smith will have you

(01:30:54):
covered three hours before college kickoff. Every Saturday morning. Listen
to Countdown to Kickoff presented by BETMGM right here on
Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app coming up, I
will get to it. I want to get to Miami's
mid season struggles, the heat were a solid team last year,
went far in the playoffs, but you heard me give
the next their flowers. One of the reasons I believe
they have a real shot this year, in addition to

(01:31:16):
their great team and their depth and their defense and
the rebounding and all those good things, is that maybe
the rest of the Eastern Division is scuffling, including the
Miami Heat. We'll talk about that coming up. I'm Bernie Fraddle.
We're coming to your life from the Las Vegas Fox
Sports Radio tirack dot com studios. Don't go away, you're
listening to the Bernie Fraddle Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(01:31:36):
All right, back on the Bernie Faddle Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Come to you live from me tyrack dot com studios
here in Las Vegas. Take up to two am Pacific,
five am Eastern. Why I read a tweet from a gentleman,
Michael Garcia. First, I appreciate Michael listening to the show.
He said, funny how you took shots at Shannon Sharp

(01:31:57):
about Brock Purdy, yet you didn't call out his worst detractor,
your co worker, Nick Wright. Is that because Sharp left
your network for a bigger stage? Kind of petty of you. Well,
first of all. I don't listen to Nick Wright, and
he's not my co worker. I work for Fox Sports Radio.
He's with FS one. But I happen to see an
exchange between Nick, Shannon Sharp, and dan Orlowsky and everything

(01:32:25):
Sharp was talking about, we're hypotheticals. What are you gonna
do if he sucks in the super Bowl? Well, I
said it a minute ago. The world's a vexing enough
place without hypotheticals. Let's deal with reality. If he stinks
it up in the super Bowl, I'll report on that.
But he doesn't want to give Rock Party for credit
for anything he's done. It's half ass. But I appreciate
you you tweeting in Mike because Michael, because as I've

(01:32:47):
always said, the most boring conversations are the ones where
people don't agree. And I don't know if Shannon Sharp
left for a bigger opportunity. He's successful, He's always going
to be successful wherever he goes. And my thoughts are
my thoughts, and I my own man when it comes
to these things. I'm not part of the group think
echo chamber. But thanks for enlightening me, because I was

(01:33:09):
unaware that Nick Wright has devoted time to pissing on
brock Perty's parade. I guess he can join the club.
I honestly didn't know. But again, you're welcome to call
on next Friday as well. Bed Night Hour. All Right,
the Miami Heat are having some mid season struggles. But
first let's give them proper credit. They've been. The Heat

(01:33:31):
have been the most one of the most successful franchises
in recent NBA memory, and you know, a couple decades now, right,
They've advanced at least as far as the conference finals
three the last four seasons, two NBA Finals appearances. Eric
Spolster has done an outstanding job, but is there is

(01:33:51):
there success getting near the end now? The Heat the
other night entered a game against Sacramento in a seven
game losing streak, But that doesn't even start to measure
how terrible the Heat have been in the whole second
half of January. They got blown out by their Raptors
by twenty five, they got blown out by the Celtics
by thirty three, and then the final game of the streak,

(01:34:11):
Miami lost to the Phoenix Suns one eighteen one oh five,
but they entered the fourth quarter trailing by twenty six,
and the game the final score was somewhat respectable, but
that's only because it was garbage time. Here's the kicker.
This has to be very bothersome if you're a Miami
Heat fan. Their average margin of victory during the streak.

(01:34:33):
Check that not victory. Their average margin of defeat is
almost seventeen points. Now, the Heat had a pretty good
game the other night against a better than average Sacramento
Kings team. They won one fifteen, one oh six. Jimmy
Butler stepped up, had a nice night thirty one points,

(01:34:54):
seven rebounds, six assists, and Josh Richardson had twenty four
points coming off the bench. Terry still struggling to find
his scoring touch he just was traded to Miami, you
know for this season. Only had three points in one
of eight. But he did drop some dimes right, had
a few assists. Now, so the Heat finally snapped a

(01:35:16):
seven game losing streak, and I'm sure there's their relieve there.
That was their longest losing streak in seventeen years. But
losing so many games in a row showed that this Miami,
this version of the Miami Heat team, that's a long
way to go. If they have designs I'll make it

(01:35:39):
another deep playoff run. There are some other, bothersome numbers.
These numbers don't lie. Miami ranks twenty first in the
league in offensive efficiency and only thirteenth in defensive efficiency.
While still you can say that's in the top half
of the league, but that's their lowest metric defensively in
ten years. The Heat have always been a very, a

(01:36:01):
very what I would call, you know, discipline team. It's
pat Riley's image. They box out, they rebound, they play defense,
they communicate, they switch. That's why they're in every game.
This year is different. Now. They traded Kyle Lowry, thirty
seven year old Kyle Lowry to the Charlotte Hornets to

(01:36:21):
get Terry Rogier, who's only twenty nine. That was basically
the first move the Heat made. And then you know,
their goal was to get younger and more athletic, and
they believe it's a it's a move that'll payoff in
the long run. But you know, frankly, Rogier has struggled
in his first five games with the Heat, averaging what

(01:36:44):
ten points a game. He's only shooting about thirty four percent.
So Rosie is going to have to play like he
did in Charlotte, where he was averaging twenty four points
a game and shooting about forty six percent. So look,
we are coming here, we have Mark Medina on Saturday nights,
and we are coming up on the trade deadline, and
I think there's quite a few NBA teams that are concerned.

(01:37:04):
And the truth of the matter is there's still a
ways to go. All right, you still got thirty games
to go in the season. But when you look at
the numbers and what the heat had been used to
by their standards' is fothersome they're struggling by the way.
Along those lines. We will talk about this against Saturday Night.
The NBA have beene a massive commitment to Adam Silver,

(01:37:27):
who's now been the commissioner for ten years, and he
got himself a bag. He's finalizing a contract extension that
will not only keep Adam Silver's commissioner through the end
of the decade, but for a lot of money. Now
we don't know the exact terms of the deal, but look,

(01:37:48):
Silver replaced David Stern back in twenty fourteen, and he
had been David Stern's deputy commissioner for eight seasons prior
to that, and the truth of the matter is he's
built quite a resume. He genuinely has built quite a resume.
He's masterminded a lot of advancements or changes or you know,

(01:38:08):
whatever you want to call him in the in the
NBA since he took over. He greenlit the n C
the n Season Tournament, which a lot of people kind
of scoffed at, mocked at, and and and really anticipated
that it was going to be a wait and see
at best. My goodness, it was a huge success. I

(01:38:30):
don't think anybody can deny that the n Season Tournament was.
It was a significant success. It showed up in the
TV ratings, It showed up in attendance. The players talked
about it, the coach has talked about it, how the
level of intensity was very much like the playoffs the
Lakers when they win the NBA Cup. They had the
finals and the semi finals here in Las Vegas, and

(01:38:51):
by every metric, very measurable metrics, the increase in attendance
from the like period between November twenties to twenty two
November twenty three dramatically up. Everything was up, including attendance.
So Silver masterminded that he'd been copying soccer and he
wanted to do it, and he pulled it off. Remember

(01:39:13):
a few years ago when they suggested to play Eyden
tournament and Lebron says, whoever, whoever came up with that
idea should be fired. Well, Lebron's pretty damn lucky that
they came up with that idea, because, let's face it,
the Lakers might not have made the playoffs a couple
of those years if there hadn't been the play in tournament.
And the truth of the matter is, now that we're
used to it, I think the response has been mostly

(01:39:36):
positive from the fan base. Adam Silver. So, in addition
to the Incecon Tournament and the playing tournament, Adam Silver
also was behind the NBA Draft lottery reform, and what
that did was disincentivized teams from blaytant tanking so they
could get a better lottery seating. That also has worked,

(01:39:56):
creating some very competitive games in April. Teams who've been
out of the playoffs for weeks, well, look, Adam, you know,
Adam Silver was a shot guy. He came out of Duke.
He has been a basketball sort of a savant. He's
navigated the NBA through a lot of murky waters, he

(01:40:18):
took great decisiveness with the Donald Sterling scandal with the Clippers.
About ten years ago during COVID, they managed to cobble
together a playoffs in the bubble, which I called the
you can check in but you can never leave Hotel
California Playoffs. But it worked. Don't tell me didn't work.
We all watched. They did the best of what they

(01:40:40):
could at time, and that was Adam Silver. Now, Silver
had an extension in twenty eighteen for five years. I
think this one's going to be for like seven years.
So up next, I mean, I think you'll see Adam
Silver spearhead the new media deal in the negotiation on
TV and I the suspicion that is going to be
a doozy, And right after that is done, I think

(01:41:02):
you're gonna see Adam Silver go headlong into league expansion.
I expect Las Vegas and Seattle to get NBA teams
toward the end of the decade. So tip of the
cap to Adam Silver. Coming up, we have Chris Purfett's
World of Soccer. But first let's go back to our
guy or the chef, Kevin Wyrett with the latest.

Speaker 8 (01:41:21):
Yeah NBA on Friday Night as the Oklahoma City thunder
A vaulted themselves to the top of the Western Conference,
are tied with the Timberwolves and a half game ahead
of the Denver Nuggets. And that's after the Oklahoma City
thunder got the win against the Hornets one twenty six
to one oh six. Shake gilges Alexander thirty one points
to nine assists and five steals the Timberwolves loss, which

(01:41:43):
opened the door for Oklahoma City to take the top spot.
The Magic with the upset win one away two one
oh six. Denver getting a huge performance, I mean, don't
they always from Nikola Jokic twenty seven points, twenty two rebounds,
twelve assists, a triple double. Denver be eating the Trailblazers
one twenty to one oh wait. Pelicans Edge of Spurs

(01:42:04):
won fourteen one thirteen. Zion Williamson had thirty three points,
Victor Wibin Yama sixteen points, fourteen rebounds and seven assists.
Warriors over the Grizzlies one twenty one, one oh one,
Rockets beat the Raptors won thirty five one oh six.
Kings top the Pacers won thirty three one twenty two.
Hawks over the Suns one twenty nine one twenty the

(01:42:24):
Heat beat the Wizards one ten two one o two
and the Clippers over the Pistons won thirty six two
one at twenty six college oops. Just a couple of
ranked teams in action. First in the Atlantic ten number
twenty one Dayton a seventy six seventy one win against
Saint Bonaventure. But in the Big East we saw number
thirteen Creighton up ended on their home court by Butler

(01:42:47):
ninety nine two ninety eight.

Speaker 2 (01:42:50):
Back to you, Bernie, all right, chef, good stuff. We'll
see you Saturday night. Of course you'll be performing again
right one thirty am Pacific. Absolutely good job, chef. Good
to have you in the night.

Speaker 16 (01:42:59):
All right.

Speaker 2 (01:43:01):
Soccer is five months away from being back on the
world stage with the Olympics in Paris just around the corner.
But if you follow this show, in this feature for
the last eighteen months, you know that whether it's on
the fueler, off the field, in season or off season,
there's always news in the world of soccer. That's why
we're bringing Chris Purfetts World.

Speaker 21 (01:43:20):
Of Soccer, the greatest goals, the thrilling finishes, the international drama.

Speaker 19 (01:43:34):
Him.

Speaker 22 (01:43:38):
It's all here in this report from the world of soccer.
So much going on to the world of soccer, Bernie.
We're near the semi finals for the Asia Cup, Africa
Cup of Nations still ongoing as well. Giovanni Reina moving
from Germany from Borussia Dortmund to Nottingham Forest in the

(01:43:58):
Premier League, booking for some more playing time here. But
today's theme really comes down to a question of managers
and burnout and how long and how much pressure really
adds up at the top of the table here at
the top of the mountain, top where things get so
stressful that two giants at two of the biggest clubs

(01:44:22):
in the world are simply walking away. This week we
are talking about Zabie Hernandez, the manager of from Barcelona,
and Liverpool's longtime manager Jurgen Klop, both of who have
stated that this will be their final season with their
respective clubs. They will be leaving Barcelona and Liverpool respectively

(01:44:44):
here during the summer.

Speaker 16 (01:44:46):
Now.

Speaker 22 (01:44:47):
There are commonalities between the two and there are differences
between the two, and we will talk about both. Let's
start with Jurgen Klop, who has been managing Liverpool for
almost nine years now and the success at Liverpool cannot
be under state. He has brought them a Premier League
title and a YUEFA Champions League title respectively. He's been
runner up twice for the UCL, FIFA World Club Cup,

(01:45:11):
a YUEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup and a League Cup.
It is a remarkable amount of success, especially in an
age that has been dominated by Manchester City and Chelsea
Here at the top, he has managed to bring Liverpool
no small amount of dominance, of vigor and right now here.
Even entering into this weekend, Liverpool is on top of

(01:45:33):
the Premier League table and will remain there coming in
on Friday, five points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal.
Jurgen however, this past week announced that he would be
stepping away from Liverpool at the end of this season.
There will be no Alex Ferguson style U turn. He
will not come back to the club. He is going

(01:45:56):
to buy his own words, take at least a year
away from man If he has no country in mind,
he has no club in mind of where he will
go next, and if he comes back to England he
says it will only be with Liverpool. So he is
leaving at least on good terms. In fact some of
his players have known about his place here. His situation

(01:46:18):
since about November was just kind of hard for him
to put it into words. A German national Jurgen Klop
has basically cemented himself as the one responsible for the
modern day incarnation of Liverpool, managing great players like Mohammed Sala,
who is still in my mind one of the greatest
players playing in England right now. But we've also mentioned

(01:46:41):
Jurgen Klop's name many times here in the world of soccer,
usually in complaints to how crowded the soccer calendar is
right now. He's without Mohammed Sala and Endo, his Japanese
midfielder as they go to the Africa Cup of Nations
and the Asia Cup. It's been a tail that there
has just been a lot going on in for a

(01:47:04):
UEFA club these days, and Liverpool is no exception, and
it has fueled a massive amount of burnout for Jurgen,
who wants to take a year away and just reevaluate things.

Speaker 2 (01:47:15):
And it is tough.

Speaker 22 (01:47:16):
It is tough with everything that is going on, and
he's kind of seen himself drained, especially coming off of
last year where Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League. Now,
in the case of Zavi Hernandez, there's a lot kind
of a different pressure going on here, especially at Barcelona.
Zavi Hernandez himself has is decided to step away from

(01:47:40):
the club. It came after last Saturday, a five to
three defeat to Villa Real when he made the announcement,
and under a little bit more of understandable circumstances, Barcelona
has really struggled to come back into their dominance age
underneath Zabi Hernandez, especially who's only been the manager since

(01:48:01):
twenty twenty one. They've come out of some very dire,
very dark times that saw them lose Lionel Messi due
to a lot of financial implications of some of the
economic material situation they were put into. Zavi Hernandez, however,
has kind of felt like he's underperformed a little bit

(01:48:22):
at Barcelona, and to be fair, Barcelona's standards are extremely high.
You are in a league where the only person that
you are on your level is probably Athletico and most
definitely Real Madrid, and with the rivalry with Real Madrid,
coming in second place is simply like if the Ohio

(01:48:43):
State decides to come in second place to Michigan. It's
not acceptable to the fans who have a lot more
control there. It's not acceptable to the standards to which
Barcelona has enjoyed for the twenty first century. And this
is the key difference between Zavi and It is that
Zavi Hernandez's announcement was greeted with acceptance by the Barcelona faithful.

(01:49:08):
It was greeted with this idea of impatience, of just
a need to turn the page. And Zavi Hernandez himself
has said that he does not enjoy Monday to Friday
here with the club at Barcelona. It's a situation where
the pressure got to Zavi Hernandez. It is a situation

(01:49:28):
that I think the expectations outstripped what Barcelona is even
capable of, and that the club is still expecting matters
of the past. But there is a commonality between Barcelona
and Liverpool in their both their managers deciding to leave
their contract money on the table and walk away at
the end of the year. Is that the being at

(01:49:50):
the top now for one of the top clubs in
soccer across the world is an incredibly stressful job, especially
now callum for soccer are getting more and more crowded,
there are fewer and fewer time off, you're even to
step away and reevaluate things you WAYFA continues to add tournaments.
FIFA continues to add tournaments. International competitions no longer have

(01:50:16):
breaks for some of these things, like the Africa Cup
of Nations. Right now, money is getting bigger and bigger,
and with it comes bigger and bigger demands for your
club to perform, to perform and to win. It is
a massive amount to juggle everything being a manager now
in the modern European soccer landscape, and I think sometimes

(01:50:38):
we kind of say, yeah, that's kind of the job,
and it is. But at the same time, I think
it is also humanly relatable. No matter what you do,
burnout is there to catch you. You can be emotionally drained,
you can be mentally drained no matter what you do,
and sometimes in our culture, which is so focused on grind,

(01:50:58):
so focused on going to world every day at the
expense of everything else, there comes a point where you
just can't deal with it at after a certain point,
be it the criticism that Zavi Hernandez took or simply
the flame out of Jurgen Klop, it is a human toll.
It is an emotional toll, and it's one I think
we should all be well aware of. And it doesn't

(01:51:19):
matter if you are someone who's working a nine to
five or a manager at the top of the world.

Speaker 1 (01:51:25):
These guys run.

Speaker 22 (01:51:26):
Incredibly stressful careers and they have decided, for one reason
another to walk away. And you wonder who else out
there might be trying to find some relief for themselves.
That's it for the World of Soccer this week, Bernie.
We'll see you soon there having Chris, World of Soccer
rolls along. We started this prior to the Men's World

(01:51:48):
Cup the fall of twenty twenty two, which led into
the Women's World Cup last summer, and lo and behold,
here we are five months away from France, Paris and
the Olympics. Soccer will be back on the world stage.

Speaker 2 (01:52:02):
But of course, as we've said, it doesn't matter whether
it's in season or off season, whether it's on the
field or off the field, there is always plenty to
talk about in the world of soccer. Coming up, we
wrap up the show, and good news, we've got Taylor
Swift's itinerary. She's gonna be able to make it back

(01:52:24):
in time for the Super Bowl here in Las Vegas.
We'll explain how coming up. I'm Bernie Fraddlewick coming to
live from Las Vegas, Fox Sports Radio, Tirack dot Com Studios.
Keep it locked Radio, you listen to the Bernie fraddle Show.
Fox Sports Radio. All right, we're wrapping it up on
the Bernie Frattle Show. We can coming to you live
from the Tirak dot Com studios here in Las Vegas,

(01:52:49):
the home of Super Bowl fifty eight. Looking forward to
Radio Row will be down there poking around. Fox Sports
will have a nice set Fox Sports Radio. Before go
any further tonight, though, I want to thank my broadcast
team back in Los Angeles. They've been with me since
eleven pm Pacific time on Saturday night. Mark Ramsey, our

(01:53:10):
technical producer, Shaye Mogngard, our executive producer, and of course
Kevin Wyre at the chef on all the updates. Appreciate
all the teamwork.

Speaker 16 (01:53:20):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (01:53:20):
Cannot do the show without you, as we all as
we all know that back on these airwaves. By the way,
eleven pm Pacific again Saturday night. Oh Bob, what twenty
two hours from now? Something like that? Twenty one hours
from now? We'll be right back here. Interesting show Saturday

(01:53:40):
night is the World converges on Sinn City. We'll have
Alan Snell from Las Vegas Sports Business Journal to join us.
Take you behind the curtain all the things you want
to know about the Super Bowl in Vegas and Vegas
business wise, and we'll have an update on the olkham
As coming to Vegas. Then we'll play a game here
until twenty twenty eight. But a major step was announced

(01:54:01):
because it's gonna be built. The stadium is supposed to
be built on the site of the historic Tropicana Hotel
on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana, I
mean the come ontin. It's where Sinatra used to stay
and perform and Muhammad Ali used to work out there.
They're gonna raise it apparently April second, April second, or
they're closing in April second. So from there you will

(01:54:24):
see groundbreaking later in the year, maybe the first to
twenty five, and if things go according to Hoyles, the
A's will be here in twenty twenty. But a lot
to know about that as well as Las Vegas. Imagine
Las Vegas hosting a Super Bowl. I remember being on
the air in Detroit when it was a CBS ninety
seven to one in Detroit. You remember the famous campaign
what happens here Stays in Vegas that was supposed to

(01:54:47):
debut on ABC Super Bowl thirty eight or thirty seven
in two thousand and three, but the NFL rejected it.
They rejected it. NBC wouldn't even advertise their own show
Las Vegas on the NFL telecast. Look how far that
the NFL has come. I remember in Detroit they want

(01:55:07):
the last Vegas Visitors Convention. Bureau wanted to buy advertising
the Super Bowl thirty super Bowl thirty seven, and the
NFL said no. And we try to get a gentleman
Brian McCarthy on our show. He wouldn't come out. I
understand it's all water under the bridge. Now it's been
twenty one years now Vegas is hosting a Super Bowl.
Tony Rooma couldn't even have a Fantasy football convention here
a few years ago. Now Vegas is hosting a Super Bowl,

(01:55:30):
which raises the most important question, will Taylor Swift be there?
You know, she's become a staple of the Kansas City
Chiefs games. This season, She's got her boo Travis Kelsey
as Kelsey heads towards the season's biggest game, and he
has his best games when she's there. Some people were
wondering will Taylor Swift be in attendance because she's playing

(01:55:51):
a concert the night before halfway across the world in Tokyo.
She resumed her heiress to her Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome.
She's going to play a four nights d in Japan,
and justice he scheduled shows on this leg. Well, she's
got a few days of downtime before her next set
the following weekend in Melbourne, Australia. She gets around right.
But here's the good news, Swifty fans. And you know,

(01:56:15):
if you've got some bad blood about her, well you
better shake it off. See what I did there? See
what I did? So Swift were to hop on a
plane immediately during her final show in Japan, she would
arrive around dinner time this coming Saturday night, February tenth,
in Las Vegas. The math see Las Vegas is seventeen
hours behind Tokyo. The flight takes about twelve hours, so

(01:56:40):
at least plenty of time for Taylor Swift to get
to Las Vegas for the three thirty kickoff. That's three
thirty Pacific time kickoff next Sunday, February eleventh, which would
be the next day, and still time to get back
to Australia for her first show by the next Friday.
Now the flight is less of an issue because of
the time, so changes across the international date line. Right

(01:57:02):
the super Bowl, Actually she stayed in Tokyo. Look, the
super Bowl actually starts about eight thirty am on Monday
morning in Tokyo. So the backpedals seventeen hours and quickly
advanced nineteen hours the same week. Well that's quite the feat.
Plus she played multiple concerts on both ends. But it
turns out Travis Kelsey is not the only one in shape.
Apparently Taylor Swift is really in good physical condition. Her concerts,

(01:57:25):
I've not been to one, don't plan on going to one,
with all due respect, but I understand they span more
than three hours. There aren't any breaks or intermissions. And
she prepares for her tour by doing the entire set
list on a treadmill daily And when she does her
upbeat songs, she jogs or speed walks, and then she

(01:57:49):
slows it back down for the slower ones. For her
entire show. She warms up on a treadmill so she's
in shape to handle this. This is going to be
the I guarantee you this is going to be the
most watched super Bowl of all time. And the handle
on the Super Bowl will be the highest of all time,
the betting handle the exceeding I believe, the previous record

(01:58:09):
of one hundred and fifty eight million a couple of
years ago. And by the way, you brock perty fans,
the forty nine ers are a perfect six and z one.
Brock Purty starts this year versus the NFC playoff field.
He beat the Cowboys, Bucks, Eagles, Rams, and Packers and
then topped it off by beating the Lions last Sunday.
That meant a clean sweep and an exclamation point because
Purdy became the first quarterback for any team since some

(01:58:32):
guy named Joe Montana back in nineteen eighty four to
sweep every playoff team in his conference between the regular
season and the postseason. Yeah, two batties only a game manager.
All right, you heard me earlier. There'll be more where
that came from. It's gonna do it for the Bernie
Frattle show. Back on these airwaves eleven pm Saturday night. Meantime,

(01:58:54):
keep it locked up next to Fellas Fox Sports Radio
