What Up America. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming
to you from the tyrac Oh, Sorry about that. Coming
to you from beautiful Green Bay, Wisconsin. Sight of the
NFL Draft, which you can hear our coverage up it
here on Fox Sports Radio on Thursday. In the meantime,
(00:40):
we're getting ready to count down to the draft. It's
kind of cool, right you're If you watch our YouTube channel,
you can see some of the videos while we're out here.
And again, like literally you can see the Jumbo Tron
or one of the two jumbo trons from lambeau Field
over my shoulder. Welcome in, Frank Kelly Endo, my dear
(01:00):
friend and I Award winning comedian from that you might
remember him from tonight Show. Hey, now he'll join us.
He'll join us and make shameless plugs for all of
his upcoming Appleton, Milwaukee, Des Moines, and Lawton, Oklahoma shows.
We got a lot to get to. John Middlekoff will
(01:21):
be our guest a little bit later on this hour
as well. Of course, he's getting ready for the NFL Draft.
You can hear his podcast on the Volume podcast Network.
Let's let's talk to NBA really quickly, because I do
feel like of the islands that I remain on, the
Kawhi Leonard island has been a very very lonely one
(01:43):
because there have been times in which you're trying to
go like, yeah, when he's really healthy, Kawhi Leonard is
you know, you go back to last year, you know,
or two years ago. There are times in which he's
playing like Kawhi Leonard might be the best player in
the NBA. You know, he can score at all three levels.
He's an unbelievable defender, he can rebound. There's things that
he does that none of the other stars in the
(02:03):
NBA does. But because he has not been healthy in
a postseason since he won NBA Championship with the Toronto Raptors,
he gets lost in this conversation. And if you guys,
remember when was it Stephen A. Smith who called him
the worst superstar ever and said I believe last year
he should retire. I said, that's blasphemy. It ain't his fault.
(02:28):
He's been hurt. So what happened since? Well? Last night,
if you, in case you missed it, in the NBA,
Kawhi Leonard comes up clutch right. His clutch gene was
on full display as the Clippers go into Denver and
pull off an upset. Kawhi Leonard not only had thirty
(02:49):
nine points and five assists and three rebounds, but he
had thirty nine points on nineteen shots, nineteen shots, fifteen
of nineteen from the floor, four of seven from three,
made all five of his free throws in thirty nine
minutes of action. It was an absolute virtuoso last night.
If you're the guy and I've been that guy that says, hey,
(03:09):
Kawhi Leonard might be the best player in the NBA,
you look like a smart guy again, Does it mean
he is? Because Jokic, who had a triple double, has
been great more consistently and has been hurt less often
and is a magnificent player in his own right. The
point is that because of injury, we started to question
(03:32):
the future or even the present, day and the historic
greatness of Kawhi Leonard, and last night he reminded all
of us how good he actually is when he's healthy.
Here's ty Lewis, head coach.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
This is what kawhile is for, you know, trying to
get to this point where he's healthy for the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
And we know if we got a.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Healthy Kowhi, we can win any series. And that just
shows you tonight, you know what he's capable of doing.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Here's Jame.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
One gives up on him, he comes back, you know.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
And so.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
I mean he's a hard worker. He dedicated, like I said,
to keeping his body right. And sometimes you just you know,
some unfortunate things happen. You know, you can't control that.
But it's not from a lack of work. It's not
from a lack of wanting to be here, and just
sometimes some bad luck kids. But he's going to keep
coming back and he's going to get to this point
like he is right now, and that's why I'm just
so happy for him.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
James Harden had this exchange with the reporter about Kawhi.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
His career at the stopping start nature, all the things
he's gone through, do you think and he keeps coming back.
Do you think he gets the appreciation from people for
what he's endured and coming back from.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
No, not even a little bit. It's always negative. It's
always you know, what he's been through and what he's
not able to do just because of something that he
can't control. But we don't appreciate how great he is
when he's actually out there and putting on performances like
this tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Let's let's reset this and be honest about it. The
Clippers brass today should be high fiving themselves and should
be doing cartwheels, right they should. You know, Trent Redens
their GM and last year Trent and their president Lauren Frank,
(05:08):
they all made a really, really hard decision. They said,
we're not going to re up Paul George at a
max rate and we are with Kawhi Leonard. And people
thought they were crazy. They did. Kawi has heard all
the time Paul George playoff beat. Maybe he's not the star,
but like, how can you how can you let Paul
George go to the Sixers? Why would you do such things?
(05:28):
Why would you undervalue Paul George? Which of the two
players looks over the hill. Now that's Paul George and
which of them went healthy. And there was a time
at the start of the year when people thought everyone
thought Kawhi might not play at all this year. But
(05:49):
in risky moves, and granted it's not as risky as
Nico Harrison trading away Luka Doncik for Anthony Davis, who
was hurt at the time and hurt throughout the season,
But still those are risky moves where you're betting on
all of your analysis and what you think is going
to happen in the future, and it is not. It
is not an exact science. I think today the the
(06:13):
the Kawhi Leonard haters look so uneducated, so foolish, so
prone to hyperbole because they're prisoners of the moment. They
can't even realize how wrong they were. And Trent Redden
and the Clippers brass looks like they did a great
job of evaluating between Paul George and Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 6 (06:33):

(07:50):
turned off? Was it supposed to be? Now? It wasn't
the great Frank Kellyan, Now it was? Wasn't there another
one that you.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Can the magnificence Caliendo the magnificent because they always announced
me as something different, like people say the eight in
front of it And I don't really understand why, you know,
understand that they don't. Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Would you rather?
Speaker 4 (08:06):
That's how I say that when somebody has how you
doing slightly about it? It's pretty good?
Speaker 2 (08:14):
The was Madden the first NFL impression you did?
Speaker 6 (08:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (08:18):
I would say that was the first major impression that
people knew me for. Was that? And Kimmel brought me
on on the Fox pregame show to do Madden and
it was Madden for president. It was a presidential election year,
and uh he took a pair of hedge clippers to
the Madden eyebrows. And after that, John Madden the next
(08:38):
week came in with the most well shaved eyebrows he'd
had in twenty five years, I guess, and we all
knew that it was that that segment had hit and
I was always a huge fan of Madden. Always loved
the Mad stuff, whether it was the video game or
just growing up and you know, watching him do games
or commercials or whatever. So but he did not he
(09:01):
did not take kindly to that. He did not love that. So, uh, what.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Was that the first time he had done an impression
where it was so big where you got like pushback or.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
You yeah, I think so.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Well, the legend is odd for people to get upset at.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Well, football guys have it, especially at the time. Nobody
was making fun of football coaches. There wasn't really any
of that. Where were you going to find maybe in
some local radio and stuff, or maybe a national radio program,
but there was nobody doing big sketch like comedy stuff.
And the story goes with Kimmel he had a guy
(09:37):
who did a Madden impression, and his producer, Jimmy Bruska
had a guy who did a Mad impression, and they
we're going to fight it out who was the guy
to be in the Madden sketch. Turns out I was
both of them. So they were fighting. What's your guy's name,
Frank Frank Frank Calamari. Yeah, yeah, well we got the
same guy. So I ended up doing it and it
went over very well, and we did another one where
(10:00):
we're barbecuing at a manual or we're barbecuing at Jimmy
Kimmel's house at the end of the year and I
open up the grill and Emmanuel Lewis Webster is in
the grill and I go chasing Webster with you know,
a fork or something like that, and we go around
to the Benny Hill music and he tackles John Madden
and Madden, I guess was watching in the bus and like,
(10:21):
I'm accounibal, now, what is this?
Speaker 2 (10:23):
At least my eyebrows are nice.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
So so it was one of those things where that
was taken out pretty well. And then I did another
time another year, and then Kimmel moved on to his
talk show and they had me audition for the the
part to take over for him and other people doing
Fox NFL Sunday. The other auditions were Jeff Dunham and
(10:46):
Walter the Puppet. Walter almost got it without dun him,
that's a bit. And Craig Robinson and Billy Gardell did
a point counterpoint kind of thing and they just thought
that mine would be with the impressions of able to
do different impressions was the thing that could work all
the time. So what we did, I think was auditions
for no. That was actually one of my first segments.
(11:09):
We did like a Jay Leno man on the street
kind of thing for the audition. I did like three
different impressions in it, so they saw that it wasn't
just mad, and then then I ended up getting it
so and it took off pretty I was. I was
there for nine years, ups and downs, but hard. At
the time. There was you know, the media wasn't the
same as it is now either, where you didn't get
as many stories now along the way. We talked about
(11:32):
this on podcasts later too. I think we're gonna talk
about this the It's different because you've got to be
up to the moment in everything. But at the same
time there is lots of information being thrown out constantly
that people know more to talk about now. But you
could never tape, you know, on a Thursday and air
on a Sunday anymore, which is what we had to do.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Could you do a live sketch now that.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
You probably could, but they'd be worried as a comedian
that you'd say something that they didn't want. A sketch
itself would be very difficult. I went on there Live
with the guys a few times Terry and just sat
in the you know, they moved on the set to
the chairs part of the set, so it'd go do
that and go front with the guys, and that was
always my favorite time because I was with them and
(12:13):
you could see them laughing. The tough thing about doing
a prepared sketch is that on a show, whether it's
the NFL and Fox or the NBA on TNT, the
stuff that works is usually the stuff that didn't work.
When something they try something and it gets like screwed up,
and then everybody starts messing with each other. That's when
(12:35):
it's really fun. The camaraderie and the chemistry shows through.
As opposed to I had to do a two minute
segment that was on tape and he couldn't change anything.
Nothing would happen. You didn't know where people were laughing
because they're not on the screen at that time. So
that was the different because it was almost it was
everything is in the moment when it's just the guys
talking to each other, and then it goes to my
(12:55):
prepared edited piece which just had a different feel, and
sometimes it was right on the mund it was great,
and sometimes you go, I like that one.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Back Frank Kelly into our guests here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. We're in Green Bay. You're from just outside
of Milwaukee, Walkershaw, which you don't have the accent.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
My o's my I did I guess when I first
got to.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Come back, because I got the job May fifteenth, and
my name switched from Doug to coach. Coach, coach coach
got me, it's coach coach here, coach coach?
Speaker 4 (13:23):
What what's going on?
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Go? It's And then they also say, uh wait, what
is it? Uh god? How do you end every conversation. No, no,
in the conversation with shoot out, think about it. Oh
it sounds good, Oh sounds good. Sounds good.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
Yeah, yeah sounds good.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
You don't hang up, you don't say goodbye, you don't
say see you later. You just say it sounds good.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
Yeah, it sounds good. Yeah, it's it's halfway to the
Fargo accent.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
What it is.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
It's not all the.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Way when I go full Fargo. It's it.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
And as you get as you get to like uh,
Germantown and you go get north, you go Shorewood? Was
it German Town? What's the Port Washington? You start to
hear more of the os Oh, oh, it's almost o
w on everything as as opposed to like the Italiana,
you know, the the Europeana. So uh yeah, that's there's
(14:16):
definitely and I had I had it when I first
went out to l A and people were and I
didn't hear it at all, and this and I what
I do for a living is listen to people. So
I guess I just wasn't as good at listening as I.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Thought the draft impressions of mel and then Todd McShay.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
And now I never did a mcshae.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
And then I started because.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
I started talking about I started to talk like I
never did a McShee. You know, that's a kind of situation.
You start going to the mall and you get ask me,
do you do the boss or the baldemar accent? I said,
I do a little bit, but it's more about just
rapid fire and throwing things out to hear the ire,
hear the iron fire and the tremendous At the end
of the day, you'd be hard pressed tell me otherwise,
(14:58):
so that's all you can always end stuf. But it
was always that the rapid Fire and the Todd Todd Todd,
which was supposed to be when we first do it
started doing that sketch, it was supposed to be just
Todd Todd, it was actually mcshae. Yeah, I was gonna
say mcshae mcshae, and we didn't go with that.
Speaker 6 (15:15):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
I'd said that to the producer, and producer said, I
think it's at the same time, I go Todd, We're
gonna go Todd, and he had the same idea I did,
and we go Todd, and then it was supposed to
be a couple of Todd's. I turned to the top
and we did it with the actual Todd mcshae. And
in the in the background of the sketch we did,
which was about cups of coffee. In the background, they're
(15:36):
doing the w NBA draft in the same studio and
we had to wait while they were, while the players
were being picked and stuff like. It was crazy.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Well, how did how did Milton.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Mel loved it? I thought he was gonna dislike it,
just because you seem on TV. You know, you see
Mel on TV and it's a weird thing where he
seems like this angry guy. He takes the glasses off
in public and is a regular person. You're like, who
are you? And his wife's the same thing. She goes
I know, because she's a beautiful lady that you do.
She should have nothing to do with mel kiper Junior
(16:06):
And you're like what And his daughter's beautiful. None of
it adds up. None of it adds up. So he
came out to sharing Baltimore and I said the name
mel kiper Junior and from the back I heard that's
him heckling me as himself in the show. So he's great.
I mean, after I did this sketch, he called me
and said, the entire Kuyper family sitting around watching everything
(16:28):
you did. Tremendous job. Love the Todd Todd Tod shade
drives me crazy. You ever been to Vegas?
Speaker 7 (16:34):
You know?
Speaker 4 (16:34):
And he starts going off on all this stuff and
asking me stuff about Las Vegas because I had the
show there at the time. So yeah, he he's great
and always loved it. He always did want me to
do mcshae. I'm like, he's normal. He's not like you.
You're different, But that's what makes you great?
Speaker 2 (16:48):
You can maybe go special instead a different ball. The
special can take on multiple nations as well. What does
that like to have a show in Vegas?
Speaker 4 (16:55):
Uh, it's it's difficult depending. I mean it's good and bad.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (16:59):
Somebody from LA could be sitting next to somebody from
Louisiana and they laugh at different times. Different you know,
it's different paces of life. Somebody from New York could
be sitting right next to him. So New York you
tend to hit comedy hard or punch punch punch punch.
La is too cool for school?
Speaker 2 (17:16):
What's the Midwest? Because you're at Appleton this.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Week, Appleton Friday and Saturday, at Appleton Friday and Saturday
at the Appleton Skyline Comedy Club on the first clubs
Frank Calliendo ever did? Then he goes here, He goes
to Milwaukee, w just sold out Minneapolis Actme Comedy Company,
and then ends up in des Moines, Iowa. Do to
tremendous job at the Funny Bone there in Des Moines.
I think it's actually in Urbandale, well where Caliendo nineteen
(17:39):
eighty eight won the national AAU Junior Olympic fourteen and
under Baseball Championships, doing a tremendous job on the A
ten under Wisconsin Duke's Craig Council. Whatever happened to him,
Craig Council trying to figure out what's going on? That
guy Caliendo doing comedy. He'd be hard pressed at me otherwise.
So Frank on Stage dot com. The big shows that
i'm the ones that aren't sold out yet areton this
(18:00):
weekend Friday and Saturday, Skyline Comedy Club, and then next
Thursday at the Des Moines Funny Bone. All those tickets
you can find out about on frankonstage dot com. So
you don't even have to spell Caliendo Frank on stage.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
But I was gonna get it was actually a decent question.
Is like our last question that was supposed to see
you up for that? What were we talking about before I
have completely lost talk about mal kiper Jude situation.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
Yeah, do some Gruden man, we'll do that. You guys
want to do an unboxing. Guys wanna unbox? You unbox something,
You get a present you unbought, You open up the box.
Inside the box, there's another box man. You ever you
ever see inception? You ever see that Doug Leonardo DiCaprio.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
Man, I love that guy.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
He was in Titanic. You ever see Titanic.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
I'm the king of the world. Man, you gotta describe
dinner with Gruden in Rome.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
So I I took. I'd never been to Italy before.
I'm Italian, half Ti and my wife's fully Italian. My
kids are three quarters tight in which he lets me
know every day. Uh.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
And then you're not full of Italian?
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Yeah, and her her family's like the Sopranos, but a
cartoon version of Okay, it's that much. Man, what do
we go to do? You gotta be fine? So I
take a picture in front of the coliseum, put it
on Instagram. I got a text from Jeff Leonardo, who's
Gruden's right hand man. He's like, do you know Gruden's
in Rome right now? Like what I have, Grudar what
it's like Star Wars? There is another you know? So uh,
(19:24):
we end up going to have dinner because I text John.
We end up hanging out for a couple hours and
there's nothing funnier than John grew and going you're gonna
eat that man, you pass that spaghetti, You're gonna have
little spaghetti too. Whysketta? Do you ever have Brasketta?
Speaker 7 (19:39):
Man?
Speaker 2 (19:40):
You ever had that? Some people say that's that's good. Wait,
does he's in the act now? Does he like that?
Does he ever turn it off? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (19:47):
I don't think he can. I don't think he can.
I mean, I think Gruden just is. He's a more subdued.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
I thought you were told. I thought you were told,
never go never go full grow.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
That's going on, that's going to my act. You just
wrote a bit it's full Grouden.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
I tell you what they said, never go full groot
and I did. Man Look at where Look where I am?
Speaker 4 (20:04):
A spider two wive banana.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Man Appleton this weekend Sunday in Milwaukee, and then to
Minneapolis next week at the Acme Comedy Club, and then
to Des moy des.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Moines, And there's a whole bunch of other dates leading
all the way to All roads lead to Lawton, Lawton,
Oakall patche Casino and Lawton, Oklahoma. Man, it's gonna be tremendous.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
He's the fabulous, fabulous, fabulous Frank Calliando Frank kellyand they're
gonna do twice like they do with boxing matches. Kellyan
New Doug Ottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's uh,
let's welcome in John Middlecoff, NFL analyst and host of
the three Now podcast on the Volume Podcast Network. John,
(20:49):
this is I don't know. It strikes me as a
weird NFL draft, and I have many thoughts behind why
it's weird. But would that be a way in which
you kind of characterize it.
Speaker 7 (21:00):
I was hoping to get a caliendo, you know, fake
Bill Belichick called to a recruit.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Oh, well, we could probably we could do that. We
can work that one in. Frank has gone. Frank has
gone to his dressing room because he's he's up here
for an event we have. We're having tonight at the
at the Legacy Hotel. But that would be good. I
like that. Well, I add that to the bit as well.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
Right for sure, I think this draft, you know, I
think it's a little bit of a come down from
last year. I mean, I would say in my adult
life the last couple decades, that had to be one
of the more anticipated drafts. I mean, instead of record
six quarterbacks in the top twelve, you know, Caleb the
Heights behind him, you had the Heisman Trophy winner coming
(21:43):
from LSU. Obviously, you know Pennick to bo Nicks were
playing in Oregon and Washington, who were awesome programs. J J. McCarthy,
the quarterback for the National Champions, who was synonymous with
Jim Harbaugh. It was just kind of unique, and this,
I think feels like a really big letdown relative to that.
But I think you gotta be careful, you know. I mean,
(22:05):
you recruit kids now, but just the way you recruited
out of high school does not determine how your success
is gonna go. Just because a draft doesn't quote unquote
have the sizzle or the hype on draft Day doesn't
mean some of these guys aren't going to be great players.
It's just it's fascinating television. And I think you know,
(22:26):
if you are a network, you wouldn't mind shador slipping
to make for good TV. But anytime you're pretty dependent
on d tackles and offensive linemen in the top twenty,
I mean you're gonna have I would say, I don't
know sixty seventy percent of the picks are going to
be linemen. It's just it's not the same as quarterbacks
(22:47):
and wide receivers.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All Right,
let's let's let's start with quarterback cam ward What would
look if he goes number one Overawbs? They'll be unrealistic expectations,
But what are realistic expectations for cam Warden as the
starting quarterback in the NFL?
Speaker 7 (23:07):
Yeah? Now, I think when you take a guy, obviously
best case Scenarrow who becomes a star, but like that,
that's pretty unrealistic. The percentage of that happening is pretty low.
I think you're looking for him to just become like
a top over the course of the next two or
three years. Can he become a top half of the
league starters? And honestly like top twelve thirteen guys, right,
(23:29):
like what Cousins was when he peeked or Dak Prescott.
I mean, he's a different player, But you don't have
to be Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen. Can you just
function like Jared Goff when Sean McVay got there. And
obviously his skill set, you know, he's got a big arm,
he's athletic, kind of a freelance player. But that's kind
of the modern day quarterback. It's quote unquote the freelance
(23:51):
player because they can all move around. I also think
relative to what they've been dealing with, I think they
were like top five and backs last year. They had
a ton of turnovers. There's really no disputing their quarterback
play last year. It couldn't have been any worse, not
just last year in a vaccam like historically, quarterback play
it was beyond it. You couldn't function and for a
(24:12):
long time their defense was actually really good. So if
they could just get above average quarterback play, they could
go from a three win team to like seven or
eight wins, and that's especially in that division. So we
saw what cam Wore did from Miami, who's nowt The
ACC is a little different in the NFL, but Miami's
defense last year was atrocious. I mean, if it wasn't
(24:36):
for the offense, it was kind of like Jayden Daniels
two years ago for LSU, same thing. Their defense historically
bad for the programs, but offense was awesome. So if
he can just give them a little sizzle, a little
you know, some explosive plays and not turn the ball
over and get sacked like Will Lewis, you know, you
might just have some positive momentum as a rookie.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
Stuck Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, that's the
voice of John MIDDLECOF three is the podcast. Of course,
it covers all things nfls. We get ready for the
NFL Draft, which is Thursday, and of course you can
hear live coverage of that draft right here on Fox
Sports Radio. Ashton Genty, Ashton Genty, I record a pod
with with Tom Telesco, former GM of both the Chargers
(25:18):
and the Raiders, and you know, we got into conversation
about running backs and running back market, and he said
he thinks it's all stayed the same except for a
Saquon Barkley, except for an Ashton Genty. How do you
view Ashton Genty?
Speaker 7 (25:34):
Yeah, listen, I come from that conference, so I have
a lot of respect from Boise State and what that
program represents, how good of a player he was. I
do think, like maybe I'm in the minority here. I
think drafting, and I get it it's a bad draft,
but I think drafting a running back when you could
draft other positions and then get a running back in
(25:57):
the second round in a draft. Odho was running back
is the right play from a because part of the
draft is really twofold one. It's trying to draft good players,
but it's also like an economic exercise. So it's like
I got to pay a premium for gen D if
I want to, if I'm the Raiders and I want
to take them at six, or I'm the Jags and
I want to take them at five, But you not
(26:17):
only have to use a high asset on them, you
didn't pay them a lot of money because you're drafting high. Well,
it's like you can get a starting running back in
the second or third round, where you draft high in
every round and historically a lot of really good players
come out of there. And I would say Saquon Barkley
was a dramatically better prospect than Ashton jen Z. Plus
we had more information and I think most of us,
(26:39):
myself included, not drafting them number two was crazy. I Mean,
someone hit me the other day was like, you know,
the last two years, the running back was the best
player for the NFC team that went to the Super Bowl,
Christian McCaffrey and then Saquon Barkley. I was like, yeah,
that's true, but both guys were not on the team
that drafted them. Right one, some second teams saying with
(27:01):
Christian McCaffery. So I think comparing Aston GenZ, who, like
Christian McCaffrey, we saw when they played Penn State and
that was kind of like, let's use it in NFL terms,
Voise clearly not as good. If he goes to a
team drafting really high, they're not going to be as
good as a lot of teams they play. Their offensive
line was overwhelmed a lot like Saquan in New York
and you don't get to thrive, and you saw, you know,
(27:24):
this is not when I hear them compared to Barry Sanders,
like middle Cooff, you just crushed them because he short,
he's five eight. What about Barry Standers. It's like it's
like saying that you invest stocks, comparing you to Warren Buffett,
Like that's an insane comparison. The chances of these Barry
Sanders are not only slim to none. There's been one
Bear I'm four years old, There's been one Barry Standers
in the history of the NFL. And I just think
(27:46):
that sometimes we get like over aggressive and it's like, well,
Jamier Gibbs was drafted highs Well, yeah, I would take
Ashton Genzy if I also got Tyler Warren the tight
end because that's what the Lions got. They traded from
six to twelve, and they got a pick in the
hype mid thirties and they drafted Laporta, so they essentially
got a two for one. And here's the other thing,
(28:07):
Jamir Gibs like Christian McCaffrey. They're elite wide receivers. To me,
Gentsy is more like Saquon Barkley, but Saquon is just bigger.
And I felt better about Saquon coming from Penn State
and seeing him dominate the Big ten. So I feel
like I'm the hater. I like asking genty. I also
feel like the height, though, has gotten a little out
(28:30):
of control given his position and how deep it is
in the elite in this draft class.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
voice of John middle Cooff. We've talked quarterbacks, We've talked
running backs. Now let's get to the part of the
draft where there's a ton of depth defensive line, especially
d End d end What are the what are the
tears in your mind? Or who who are tears?
Speaker 7 (28:55):
I think there are there's like two separate type guys.
There's one that we're just really good in college, undisputable
Mason Graham. Like you watch him, he's a dominant player,
but he doesn't like hit the measurables. And this happens
every year, Like if Mason Graham just walked in, he's
not going to look like you know, Jalen Carter. And
then there's the guys like Stewart from tex A and
(29:18):
m who meets all the measurables but wasn't that great
of a player relative to like production. And I think
that's always a balance in the draft because you're not
drafting him just like okay, because he's to justify well
get him in the NFL with our coaching. You know,
the jag did this with with Walker, the guy they
(29:39):
drafted over Adon Hudsinson. Now I think eight Hudson's a
better player, but Walker the last two years has had
I think twenty total facts over two year period and
they just picked up a fIF yer option. Like he's
become a really good player, and he's a good example
like if you just bet on the measurables, you can
coach that up over time. To me, it's risky, but
I do understand that mindset. And then there's just guys
like you know, Jalen Walker from Georgia who one of
(30:04):
the more anticipated games of the twenty four season was
Georgia Texas and Banks, the left tackle was going to
be a first round pick. He destroyed. I think he
had three sacks in that game, a bunch of TFLs.
He had one of the better games, you know, in
a vacuum, of any player in college football last season,
especially when he factor in the level of competition. So
(30:25):
I now he's a shorter player, you know, he he's
six one, not six four. So I think that's part
of this draft. Some of the better players Graham Walker
aren't ideal like six three three hundred or six three
two fifty there. They're just smaller guys than ideal like
that you would draw up. But they're just great football players.
And some of the guys that meet the measurables. And
(30:47):
this goes for left tackle too, like Banks to Texas
or Stewart a Texa A and m the pass rusher.
You go, God, I wish they were a little better.
I mean, look at Will Campbell. If Will Campbell just
had into and a half longer arms, he'd be a
no brainer pick for Rabel, but I bet they go
back and forth because they're like, uh, there's a little risky.
And that's what I think that sums up this draft.
(31:09):
Beside a couple guys, there's just a lot of risk
and it's just you're taking. You're always taking an educated guest,
but this, you're really taking life. Yeah, kind of a
coin flip.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Three and outs of the podcast. I'm sure he has
a ton a ton of stuff working around the NFL Draft.

As Frank Calliando might say, rankum, rank them all, right, Doug,
Let's rank the top three NBA playoff performances we've had
in the opening few days of the NBA postseason.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Individual performances. Correct, Yeah, okay, So I'm gonna actually work
backwards and go Kawhi Leonard is one and Kate Cunningham
was two. My only question is who would three be? Right?
Who does number three work for? I think that's gonna
(33:26):
be Stephan Cony, So Steph Curry game one against the
Warriors when he has thirty one on nineteen shots, five
of nine for three, also had six rebounds and three assists.
And then number two is is Kate Cunningham last night
the Detroit Pistons getting a win in Madison Square Garden.
(33:47):
At number one was Kawhi Leonard last night in Denver
as the Clippers pull off the upside.
Speaker 8 (33:54):
And by the way, if we would have asked this
maybe next week, it would have been different because I've
just learned that Red Panda will be performing at halftime
of Game four when that particular series shifts to Memphis,
so they might have been included anyway. Onto the NFL
rank the top three quarterback options for next season four
the Pittsburgh Steelers, Well.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
The Pittsburgh Stellers well, number number three, Number three is
Schidore Sanders rookie quarterbacks, super super accurate, tough kid. Number
two Mason Rudolph, who of course started for the Steelers
(34:43):
two years ago when they reached the playoffs and number
one Aaron Rodgers Hall of Famer still very much possibility.
Speaker 9 (34:51):
Oki Doki. It's kind of been a theme of this hour.
Speaker 8 (34:56):
You and I have tinged our voices with it because
of the visit Frank Kellendo earlier this hour. So I
want you to wrap up this edition of Rank Him
by ranking your top three favorite Frank Callendo impressions.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Oh oh okay, uh, number number three. Number three is
Morgan Freeman.
Speaker 9 (35:26):
Oh yeah, okay, he's got so many I can't remember
him all.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
That's good, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Number two is his Jim.
Speaker 6 (35:36):
Rome phenomenal, really good. How about that number two?
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Number number one is his John Madden and that, as
he said, that kind of made him synonymous with football
bad and obviously passing away in the Hall of Fame
and representing all things football. I think mad as number one.
Speaker 9 (35:58):
It actually puts another job on John Gruden as number one.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
But the term is as good too.
Speaker 8 (36:03):
I mean earlier this hour when he was talking about
having dinner with him in Rome, I mean that was brilliant,
but John Madden was Yeah, John Madden was really the
one who made Caliendo Caliendo.
Speaker 9 (36:15):
And that concludes a phenomenal addition my throat there of
game time.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
Game This is game time on The Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
