Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, listen, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Years
in the bonus with Doug Gottlieb, The.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Gotleig Show is the bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
App Welcome in. I hope you're doing great.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Training canvas are underway and obviously, as you guys don't
broadcasting in Green Bay, everybody's waiting on the Jordan Love
contract to get done. Not done yet, so there's really
no story there until we know what.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
The story is. What's the actual amount? Is he the
highest paid player in the NFL and NFL history?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
And granted, I know we get the thing, but what
an amazing one to eighty that would be from last
year when he did sign an extension that pays him
eighteen million dollars for this year and there was no
fifth year bonus, there was no Hey, we're definitely the guy.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
And he earned it.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
He earned it, he won it, and he held on
to it and did a really good job through a
playoff win in the playoff loss at Philadelphia, and now
comes the real payday, the life changing money, the team
structure changing money, where Jordan Love is going to be
a guy who will be asked to be in Green
(01:21):
Bay for you know, the bulk of his very likely
to be.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Most successful years of his career. So that's the I
guess the looming story.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
But there is no story until there is a story,
and I don't have the story as of the recording
of this podcast. What I do have for you is
some thoughts on USA basketball, specifically Lebron James, who's been
really effective. Granted, he did miss two big free throws
last night, but I actually think this is a type
of game that he can be more effective than he
usually is because his ability to create contact, playdown Hilling,
(02:00):
gets to the rim and make just enough shots.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
To keep him healthy, keep him, you know, keep him.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Close to him so they're not playing, you know, way
off him when he's in the post, when he's throwing
the ball in the post.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
I think it makes he's gonna have a great tournament now.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
I also think that it shows the ability to have
Anthony Davis and Lebron James and maybe one.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Other bigger player with them, and.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
That one of their bigger players just covers up for
both of their weaknesses on defense and stays out of
the way at offense. So I'm I don't know if
I'm bullish on on Jordan getting the job, but I
am bullishot having one of my daughters with me and
with him in order to be the caddy, the chauffeur
for Maddie Johnson today and through the weekend, going to
(02:45):
packer practice, going to our practice as well.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
All right, let's welcome in Kevin Fishbain.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
He's seen right for the Athletic follow them at the
Athletic NFL. He covers the Chicago Bears Bears camp that
I believe will be headed to Kevin obviously, so much turnover,
specifically in the offensive side of the ball, right. They
fixed some of the defense with mid season trade and
seem to improve it, but the offense different on paper.
(03:20):
What's the feel so far in Lake Forest as to
whether or not there's that real change other than just
a personnel. Does it feel different to the Bears.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
Yeah, I think it does. You know, it's this interesting dynamic, Doug,
where you have a rookie quarterback, so normally things are
kind of it's always with caution, But I think two
things are in play. As you said, they remade the offense.
I mean, you have Keenan Allen Beach out there with
DJ Moore and Roma Doonde, and you have a rookie
quarterback who's getting the first team snaps right away, and
(03:50):
a rookie quarterback that is, you know, more advanced than
you might expect from a normal rookie quarterback. So I
think you're definitely feeling look like the defense is probably
still ahead of the offense. You'll see that in camps
around the around the league this time of year. But
I do think this bears offense for having a rookie quarterback,
for having the struggles they had over the past few years,
and certainly seams and fields a little bit more smooth
(04:12):
than we're useful.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Okay, what about Caleb Williams. What are their expectations for
him in his rookie season.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Yeah, yeah, I think it's a again, you're trying to
straddle that line right where you want to be really
excited for him. He's number one pick, he's your guy,
but it's not easy for rookie quarterbacks. Leasing CJ. Stroud
the year last year, was so remarkable was because nobody
had ever done it before. So I think with Caleb,
I think the Bears understand that they've got a great
(04:42):
supporting cast around him, that he's ready to go, but
also that like there's just going to be adversity. There's
going to be defense he's never seen before. There's going
to be you know, he's got to get used to
the speed of the game and on all those different
things that are going to come up. So I think
that they're you know, I think they're obviously incredibly excited
what he's going to mean for this franchise for the
long term as far as this year goes, I think
(05:05):
that they want to show that they probably don't want
people running around thinking this year is going to be
super Bowl team, right, because again, it's not easy for
rookie quarterbacks, regardless of how talented you are. I mean,
you got there's only a few rookie quarterbacks even who
have even made the playoffs who were pick number one
or number two. You got to go back to obviously Stroud,
go back to Luck and RG three. It's tough. But
(05:28):
they're obviously very excited about before him and about him,
and think that this is going to kind of put
them on a trajectory that this franchise hasn't seen in
several decades.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
That would be amazing, maybe maybe even ever.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I mean think about it, Like the Bears are synonymous
with a lot of things, high level, elite quarterback play
has has never been one of them, right, I mean
that's really kind of amazing, is that you know they've
It's not just even Jim McMahon, as championed as he
is because he won the last Super Bowl that they won.
It's not like anybody goes like, you know who he
(05:59):
reminds me of it is Jim McMahon. I mean, it's
just a he was a great college quarterback and a
great competitor in the pros. Let me ask you about
the coaching staff. I mean specifically, you got a head
coach and Matt Eberflus, who many thought was on the
hot seat last year. The late season turnaround seemed to
keep the Wolves of Bay. Now you get a new
(06:19):
offense and new quarterback. But what's the shatter in Lake
Forest in regards to his job status.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Yeah, I mean I think it's pretty safe. You know,
he has a lot of confidence. I think he has
the confidence of his bosses certainly, you know, it was
quite highly publicized at the end of last year. The Bears,
like any team, you know, had options when you have
a Harbaugh available, when you have a Belichick available, when
you have some of the guys that became available last year.
(06:51):
But they really believed in his defense and the way
he teaches, and in the way that he kind of
kept this team together is through what you just you know,
alluded to that really difficult stretch. So you know, when
you talk about this team and what they could do
this year, I think it's fair to wonder if a
guy with a record of you know that of only
(07:13):
ten wins in two years, and Matt eberboss, it's fair
to wonder about them. It's fair to wonder about the
new play caller and Shane Waldris coming here from Seattle
and what that's going to bring. You know, you feel
good about the quarterback, you feel about the receivers, you
feel good about the defense. You know, I'm interested to
see too, Doug. You know, this team when they're on
hard knocks, you know which is going to air for
(07:34):
the first time two weeks from today, who is going
to get their first kind of national look at mattybrabous
And and there's probably a lot of people outside Chicago
who don't know a whole lot about him. So I
think that they're they're going to see him, and I'm
curious to see what their responses. I think he is again,
very comfortable to spot. It's pretty confident. I think the
team really has bought in to everything. This has been
(07:55):
a very drama free summer so far. And I've been
on this beat over a decade. There haven't been a
whole lot of those, and I think he's a big
reason for that.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Jeoma free summer in at hallis Hall is Like you said,
it's it's very very I don't know I've heard of or.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
It doesn't happen very often.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Of the additions offensively, and there's been a lot of
them outside of Caleb Williams, especially the veteran players.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Who are they most excited about?
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Yeah, well, I think they're really excited about Keenan Allen
just because he's just going to make everything easier for
Kada Williams. I mean, here's a guy who you could
you could have Hall of Fame discussions about him with
what he's already done in his career. He saw what
he did last year with how you know rough it
was a year was the Chargers. He still put up
ridiculous numbers. So I think being able to have a
guy who's going to be that outlet for a rookie
(08:48):
quarterbacks can be really interesting. I'll say this too, Doug.
They are not tampering expectations for Roma doon Day. They
are really excited about him. And he's somebody that stood
out in the spring. You stood out to the coaches.
If you've been watching the Giants edition of Bar Knox,
who you saw how much the Giants like them. This
(09:08):
is this was kind of a situation where the Bears
could not believe they got both Capabilliams of Roma Dunay.
And I think Odonzay is going to be somebody who
won a perfect spot for him to be where defenses
are naturally going to key in on Keenan Allen and
DJ Moore. That could create some one on one opportunities
for him. We saw how dominant he was at Washington
last year and he's been really impressive. So and you
(09:29):
know the thing is too, you know it's again we
talk about a weird summer at Hallis. You throw in
DeAndre Swift, you throw in Gerald Everett. This is a
collection of skill players that this city hasn't really seen before,
just all at all those positions, So all those things
should certainly help. Caleb Williams and I think Bears fans
are understanding that's pretty excited about it.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Well, it should be. Should be great stuff.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
It's an interesting team, one that I think we're going
to see in person with a chance to hang out
hopefully with you in person.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Meantime.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
What a great update for us, Kevin fish Pain go
check out his stuff at the Athletic NFL. He Kevin's
Chicago Bears senior writer. Been doing a long time. Kevin,
You're the best man. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Thanks so much. Doug.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Le. Let's get to the Fox, says, and now.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
I say, here's Paul Pierce talking about Lebron James in
Team USA.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
You know when you.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
Look at the regular season and you like, oh, ant
Man is next in line or Jason Tatum is this
but when you see the collection come all together and
you watch lebron Man, he might be clearly the best
player still in the NBA. I mean, I don't know.
I mean it just that way watching this time? No serious,
you just punk shoot you. I don't look at the collection.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So you why isn't nobody else doing this?
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Okay?
Speaker 6 (10:55):
Why is that early stepping up? I want to see
ant Man or Tatum do this. It is a couple
of games, but this is supposed to be one of
the young boys coming in and doing this for them.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Okay, you know what I'm saying. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
The problem is, and we talked about this in the
radio show, the problem is that the international basketball is
it's not designed to be this way, but the way
it's officiated it really is a much more physical game,
which takes out some of the athleticism, and it takes
out I think it's going to take out a lot
of the effectiveness of Steph Curry.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Can Curry still be affected? Yes?
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Limited Wise, remember you can like hand checking is a
lot more viable a defensive technique than it is in
the NBA. You just be a lot more physical, and
so what Lebron's able to benefit from is the fact
that while he doesn't go by people nearly as much anymore,
he's the biggest and the strongest and the baddest, and
he's making just enough shots as well to keep people honest.
(11:54):
I think what the team needs is Kevin Durant. I
think they know that as well. People so quickly forget
the last time around last Olympics, Kevin Durant saved us,
and I would expect him to have a similar role.
He's just too big for any of their guards to cover,
and any of their bigs are not athletic enough. And
while strength, he doesn't have the strength of Lebron. Right,
(12:15):
he's shown the ability and the fortitude to be able
to score no matter what, no matter who's guarding him.
But a lot of this is the style of officiating.
The style of basketball is different than that of the NBA,
and it's so hard for NBA guys to even conceptualize.
Here's lebar arinsondug about Aaron Rodgers down playing a mini
camp absits.
Speaker 7 (12:34):
I think in this scenario, what makes it interesting and
the reason why he's trying to justify it is for
the simple fact that he was missing during practices that
the organization wanted all their players there participating. And again,
(12:55):
when you have these practices, the most important part of
the practice is the quarterback getting his timing and his
reps in with the offensive coordinator and with the players
around him, his offensive line, his receivers, timing on that communication,
(13:16):
lingo of the offense, all those things. Oh well, he
knows all those things, he has all that set up. Well,
what about everybody else? See, that's the thing where it's
like Aaron Rodgers is in a great place. He's a veteran,
he knows how to prepare an offseason. He's one of
those guys that's one of the greatest to ever do it.
(13:38):
That's fine, But what about everybody else?
Speaker 3 (13:42):
He's I mean, couldn't nail it any better? Can you
do your job? Sure?
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Can everybody else do their job better? I mean, you
can't nail it any better than Arrington did. In regards
to a lot of times we use this segment to
disagree with people and what they've said on error. I
completely agree with LaVar Arrington. Let's see her Colin Coward
what he said about the Jets.
Speaker 8 (14:03):
This idea that the Jets are a super Bowl team
eight nine tops. We've already got Hassan Reddick drama, Nat
Hackett drama, Aaron Rodgers drama. It's July twenty third, Listen.
You can go and give up big time money like
the Rams did to get Matt Stafford, but you had,
(14:24):
let's be honest, the richest owner and maybe probably the
best young coach in the sport. So you can take
a swing on an older quarterback. But he's got to
be great, and Matt Stafford still was when they got it.
If you go to Aaron Rodgers last thirteen games in
Green Bay, he was five and eight. Stafford to the
(14:48):
Rams was a better quarterback than what the Jets got
with Aaron Rodgers, who's not as committed as Stafford, Mahomes,
Alan Brady or Lamar at this point in his career.
So basically, the Jets, they're just putting a fresh cone
of paint on the same old issues. Crazy owner, not
sure if they had the right coach and quarterback drama.
(15:10):
That's all this is.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
That's a pretty good synopsis.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
The one place where I would have disagree with is
the idea that Aaron Rodgers, the lead up to him
going to New York was worse than Stafford's lead up
going to LA Like Stafford never won back to back
MVPCE and yeah that was in the last thirteen games.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Okay, he just didn't.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
So I mean, look, Aaron Rodgers has been an easy
target for Colin for so long. This is right up
his alley. He's not wrong about the dysfunction with the Jets.
I think he's massively over selling who Aaron Rodgers was
before he got to the Jets. On the other hand,
Aaron Rodgers coming off of a catastrophic injury an achilles
ten in terror, we have no idea what he'll look like.
(15:56):
And then oh yeah, by the way, he's skipping out
on on some offseason camps.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
That's what the fuck said.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Say, let's find out who are what's annoying Jason Stewart,
and now it's your annoying.
Speaker 9 (16:19):
So in recent days, we've seen some familiar white people
get too old to do their job. Keith Oberman reached
that point about ten years ago, and now he is
a Twitter troll. I don't know how old he is.
I think he's seventy years old or something, but he
just likes to troll people on Twitter. So I don't
(16:39):
know if you saw those, Doug, but the Cardinals and
the Rays over the weekend because the new thing in
baseball is that you have to celebrate after every single hit, even.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Yes, every single hit. You have to have a separation
and all honesty.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Like I would love to say that this is a
baseball only problem, but as we know, in basketball, if
you make a three you have to have some sort
of get me three point celebration problem as well.
Speaker 9 (17:02):
Yeah. No, it's a generational thing, so and I try
to tolerate it. Keith Oberman saw that the Cardinals were
doing a Trump gesture when they did something good. I
think they put their hand over their right ear and
then put the the left fist up. Keith Oberman said,
(17:23):
among other things on his Twitter response, fuck the Cardinals.
He says, attention Baseball, ban these guys for life, confiscate
the Cardinals franchise, and implode their stadium. Then he called
the Cardinals trump Nazis. Stick to sports. I give the
(17:46):
Cardinals and the Rays credit for doing this gesture. I
think it takes balls in this political climate to alienate
half your fans. I understand baseball players in general are
a conservative, but it I think it takes balls to
do something like this in this climate. And Keith Oberman
is just a complete uh he's a lunatic.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
He's a lunatic.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
I mean, look, you're allowed to disagree, You're allowed to
dislunk dislike Trump. You are he's a former president of
the United States, he's running for president. Now you're totally
allowed to, you know, put all of his issues out
on display. And I do think, by the way, like
social media is such a cesspool. Right from the second
Biden pulled out to now you have like I think
(18:29):
it's crazy where they talk about some of the what's
the word I'm looking for some of the alleged transgressions,
transgressions by what's your name? What's the new Democratic dominie
Kamala Harris? And I'm like, okay, wait, we're really gonna
(18:53):
false her for who she's dated when Trump's on the
other side. Like, I just think the whole thing is comical.
But when you start to get to like implode the team,
sell the team, like you just go to crazy town.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
You just had to kind of roll your eyes. It's annoying.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
But even more annoying is for some reason, we're paying
more attention to Keith Ordman than we are to baseball itself.
All right, like this is an actual story, whereas baseball
isn't nearly as much a story, which is probably probably
the biggest sign of the issues that we have.
Speaker 9 (19:26):
Let's lighten it up a little bit. Let's go from
Nazis and baseball to xenophobics in basketball. Gilbert Arenas is
getting a lot of shit for this. He posted this
on his social media about South Sudan after Team USA
barely beat them.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
Man ain't beat over there, got damn throwing the game.
He going a game for his cousins, and shit he
was supposed to be losing to air up there.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Come on, man, Cool Runnings.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
We don't fold the lose of.
Speaker 10 (19:54):
The Cool Runnings team. They don't even have shoes. They
get their shoes from America. We gotta ship them shoes.
Don't even have basketball Renslow, I've seen he had to
walk what an hour and a half to go shoot basketball.
We lose it to people who don't even they got
baskets in the bank. They shoot on fucking peach baskets
(20:15):
in dirt, no shoe.
Speaker 9 (20:18):
So a lot of people are violently reacting to this
and they're trying to cancel Gilbert Arenas. I don't think
you're going to cancel anybody who's got like a hundred
million bucks in the bank and he runs his own podcast.
I don't that's the thing. He's kind of got the
uncancellable thing. But this isn't a surprise. I've been telling
people on this podcast and on the show that he
(20:40):
has been outwardly like anti euro for a long time.
He openly states that he wants people like Draymond Green
to hurt European players. Like, this isn't a surprise, and
you can't cancel him. So, uh, I guess Gilbert Arenas
has the FU card.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
He does.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I mean, look, I found it to be funny, and
I also sat there and go first, here's the issue
with Gilbert. Okay, Gilbert tries to say everything he feels.
Some of it makes sense, some of it doesn't. And
in this particular case, like it's just it's funny. It's
(21:21):
more calling out our guys than calling out there guys.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Whatever.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
I thought it was hilarious, But then again, I don't
know who we're supposed to be offending. You're supposed to
be offending South Sudanese like, I get it, but I
don't think those guys care. Again, this is just like
so many other issues that people get offended by. The
people who are supposed to be offended aren't really offended.
Other people who they start clutching their pearls act like
(21:48):
they're offended, and that's where the apologies have to come in. Yeah,
you're right, Gilbert Reenas is pretty much impervious because if
you don't want Gilbert Reena's content and don't listen to
his pod, if you don't listen to his pod, then
you'll never really exists.
Speaker 11 (21:59):
I think, Doug he said cool Runnings, which is Jamaica.
That's a Caribbean nation, far far away from the continent
of Africa. So maybe want to do a little geography
lesson there for mister Gilbert Renas.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
No, I mean, look, he was clearly talking shit and
being funny, and I think we all know what he meant, right.
But what's interesting is if I said that, no question,
I would be there would be an attempt to cancel me,
and maybe a successful attempt to cancel me. And I
guess for Gilbert Renas is not cancelable, not just because
(22:34):
he doesn't own his own stuff. But because he's black,
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
I think that. I think the whole thing is fascinating
to me. That'stating.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
So but by the way, that's what it sounds like
when people actually talk shit in basketball. That's what it
sounds like. That's maybe why I'm not offended by it
or not surprised by it. I'm like, yeah, that's about right,
that's that's exactly what dudes in the gym would say,
you lost arab There is a funny reference, funny reference talking.
Speaker 9 (22:59):
Crash like the last bastion of political incorrectness is a
locker room in sports. Yes, that's why the former president
of the United States could be caught saying that he
likes to grab women by the pussy. And then he
just said that's locker.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Room talk, like this was locker room talk.
Speaker 9 (23:16):
And he's still he's still got nominated. So the eighteen
game schedule story, our update anchor Nick Cope came in
and I was asking him what the hot stories of
the day are and he says, there it seems like
there's people are talking about the eighteen game schedule and
like this is the first time that you know, There's
been substantive talk about it. People in high ranking places
(23:37):
are talking about it, and they're talking about it, and
then they're talking about it. I'm utterly bored and annoyed
by the story. Yeah, I think it's the lead story
on ESPN dot com right now. It can't happen this season,
so wake me when something can happen in this counter year.
Other than that, I'm just bored by it completely.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
I mean, I'm as bored by it as I am
by the NBA and Amazon and who gets it. Like
if the NBA is not on TNT, it's we're still
a season away, so I don't care until then, completely
with you. Annoyed by the talk of the eighteen game schedule,
which is gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (24:12):
Can't happen this year. They already approved in the collective Barton.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Agreement, And if the owners can make more money on it,
players can make more money on it, they're going to
make more money on it.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Don't know what the big deal.
Speaker 9 (24:21):
Is, So Keith Oberman, the reaction to Gilbert Arenas and
the eighteen game schedule story.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
I think it's Keith Oberman, and I don't think it's
particularly close. But if you didn't know that was coming
from Keith Orobmin. You hadn't pay attention long Keith Obman.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
Why are we doing this.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Because we can?
Speaker 9 (24:53):
Steven Jackson went on social media to respond to this
just wild story where Sebastian Telfair has been going around
and talking shit. One of the more offensive things he's
did was on a podcast somewhere he talked about Kobe
Bryant maybe having a mistress or a side piece or anyways.
(25:15):
This is Steven Jackson's reaction.
Speaker 12 (25:18):
What are you gaining from that? What type of attention
do you think you gained it from there?
