Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Godly Show here.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
What a.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Godly show Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
So there's something super interesting going on in college athletics,
and I'll kind of let you in on what it is.
We've been told for the last year that the NCAA
is very likely moving to a five for five five
for five eligibility standard throughout college athletics. It means you
(00:49):
get five years complete five years, no matter what you
go to your red shirt, you get hurt, you get
five years. If you stay healthy, you can play that
fifth year. And they like that was litigation proof. And
now there's something that call into question. Ay, you can't
set a limit on it if a guy's a college student.
But I think what's fascinating about it is like this allowance,
(01:13):
and really all it comes down to is federal judges
finding some sort of loophole, usually for their hometown team,
to have a player play. It's crazy, right, how can
we get a guy play well if you grant him
an extra year of eligibility and he technically like, this
is all because guys got extra years with COVID And
then there's various different rulings and now we're left with
(01:36):
the are these guys going to get five years or
is there ever going to be an eligibility standard set?
And what's fascinating is there's a world there where you say, hey,
why do we have to set an eligibility how many
years you can play? As well as you're a college student,
you should be able to play college basketball or college
football or college baseball or whatever. On the other hand,
if that's the case, then why is there an eligibility
(01:57):
standard for high school? I say, you want to do
an extra year of high school that you know you
don't have enough credits to graduate, your grades aren't good enough.
You know you fail a year of high school, but
you can only play four years of high school.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
That's never been sued.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
Why can you sue for college which you can't sue
for high school. The point is that all of this
stuff is just gets ruined by a lawyer trying to
find a loophole with the help of a judge who
wants to get one of their local teams kids healthy,
and you're gonna end up having guys play six, seven,
(02:34):
eight years to which it's just not what it's supposed
to be about. I don't know how it ends up.
And in all full disclosure. The more guys that are
eligible that are older, the more guys that will go
after that are older. But the litigation that's now at
the college level eventually will trickle down to the high
(02:57):
school level, just like nil is now at the high
scho level. Oh and I wanted to point out that
Olivia Dunn retired from gymnastics. That's because she didn't make
any money because she was a gymnast. She made money
because she was a hot woman who happened to be
at a college gymnastics team.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Right, we all familiar with that.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Let's get to what the Fox says and now every
day at this time in the Bonus podcast to play
for your previous portion of Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports
One Show.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Here is.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Brady Quinn talking about rookie quarterbacks and Joe Flacco's comments
that they need time to learn the pro game.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
Playing as long as he has. He's seeing all that
in real time as he's you know, had to kind
of come in and pinch hit if you will for
a lot of you know, younger guys his Stinton Cleveland
back in twenty twenty three, a couple of years ago,
even last year for Anthony Richardson, And I think he's
very aware of how different things are now. You know,
(04:05):
for quarterbacks coming in to the league, where they draft them,
they play them, and they rinse them out right, they
don't get any time to really sit, watch and learn
unless you're a part of an organization that tries to
do it right, or if you've got a Hall of
Fame guy sitting there in front of him, or at
least a Pro Bowl Calac and Alex Smith or in
the case of Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers and then Jordan Love.
(04:26):
So that's really few and far between, right. I think
his words are wise in the sense of probably everything
he's experienced as a starter, as a backup, as a
guy who look, he's made a ton of money at
this point in time in his career, he's won a
Super Bowl, he's continually been able to prove that he.
Speaker 7 (04:43):
Can still do it, and so he does a need to.
Speaker 6 (04:46):
I think there's a desire of one two and at
the same time being able to be a guy who's
he's got five kids. You know, he's a family man,
so he probably sees it from a lot different perspective
than a lot of guys who played the position, especially
a lot of the young guys.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Uh yeah, I mean I think I don't know. Does
anybody not think he's correct?
Speaker 8 (05:09):
We do.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
We did throw these guys in the deep end expect
them to just swim. And how many stories do we
have of guys who their second team around they figured
it out. Sam Donald is just one of them. Baker
Mayfield was pretty good. Obviously he's had a research instance
being in Tampa. And we could kind of go down
the list a little bit. Here's Chris Bussard talk about
the Knicks and the pressure on Karl Anthony Towns this postseason.
Speaker 9 (05:32):
Kat, they didn't bring you to New York to lose
in the first round to the Detroit Pistons, who.
Speaker 7 (05:40):
Are missing their second best player.
Speaker 9 (05:43):
They just didn't And again, kind of like Giannis, nobody's
expecting you to win the East.
Speaker 7 (05:51):
Again. If you get to the second round, go.
Speaker 9 (05:53):
Out in six or seven to Boston, people will actually
look at that as Okay, we played Boston something a
second around.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
We can build on this. It was Kat's first year here.
Speaker 9 (06:04):
But if you guys lose to Detroit at home, people
are going to blame you. They're not gonna blame Jalen Brunson.
Jalen Brunson is six'. Too he's an. Overachiever he's about
to be the clutch player of the. Year he's got
a history In New york that he's established. Already you
will be the one to get the, blame all.
Speaker 7 (06:25):
RIGHT i think you've had a great.
Speaker 9 (06:27):
YEAR i got your second Team ALL nba on my,
ballot so you might make. That but we talked About
Julius randall Former nick who's traded for.
Speaker 7 (06:36):
You you were traded for struggling in the. Playoffs you have.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
To, oh no, question he's struggling in the. Playoffs no,
question he's struggled in the. Playoffs and but, LOOK i
Think Karl Anthony. Howls so Is julius what's his name
with The temples who's traded For they they both struggled
in the. Playoffs you don't ever make it about one,
(07:05):
GUY i don't, think AND i think again that's a
feed of come, play right if you make it about one, Dude,
like what are you actually doing? Here BUT i Think
Julius randall is another. Guy he And Karl Anthony town's
got to play better in the playoffs than they played.
Historically Here's Colin cowher talking about The.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Jets The jets are a second class. Operation Aaron rodgers
his own, dime flies cross country on his you, know
citation or jet stream or a, golfstream probably plays about
fifty thousand dollars there in, back maybe, sixty and they
give him five. Minutes they could have told him they
didn't want him on the. PHONE i don't care how
Much aaron MAKES i don't care what you think About.
Aaron you can't treat employees that. Way that's not how
(07:44):
you treat. People rams aren't treating people that. Way come on,
Now niners aren't treating people that. Way dodgers aren't treating
people that. Way baltimore's not treating people like. That that's
a second class. Move and by the, way we have
report cards to back that. Up, remembermember when the players
in THE nfl had player POLLS nflpa player, Polls jets
(08:05):
ranked twenty. Ninth owner got an f by The jets
players and the F they also have the longest playoff
drought In North american sports longer than The Washington. Wizards
it's not a well run organization at. All they Fired Joe,
douglas WHO i thought was really. Good they Fired Robert
sala in week five when the next game he was
going to be if they won in first, place and
(08:27):
they Treat Aaron rodgers like a door to door. Salesman
give me a.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Break Doug Gottlieb show here On Fox Sports. Radio, yeah,
Look i've said this, Before stut what you, do it's
how you do. It and The jets and the way
in which is this has all been perceived is a.
Negative but that's that's Classic, jets, right surprises you like
not at. All the best run organizations are the best
road to, organizations and you can start to see.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Why that's what The fox. Said.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Say be sure to catch live editions Of The Doug
Gottlieb show weekdays at three Pm eastern Noon pacific On
Fox Sports radio and The iHeartRadio.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
App let's find out who what's Annoying Jason stewart.
Speaker 7 (09:10):
And now it's your Annoying.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Jay. Stu who are what's annoying you to?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Do?
Speaker 10 (09:19):
Bud, doug you talked about this on the radio, show
BUT i kind of wanted to give you what annoys
me most about. It STEPHEN. A smith in the news this,
week just where he wants to. Be but this has
nothing to do with politics and him SAYING i don't
want to be, president but people are making me run for.
President this has to do with a RECENT nba. Owner
(09:43):
you know more about this THAN i. Do Matt ishbiah
took over The. SUNS i wanted. TO i want to
say he took over A sun's team that was run
by an owner that had a lot of creepy allegations about.
Him and this is kind of my. Point so earlier
this week On First, take Stephen a said this about Matt.
Speaker 11 (10:03):
Ishbia Matt ishbia needs to understand that right now you
are on the verge of being recognized as the worst
owner in the history of.
Speaker 12 (10:17):
Basketball that's saying a.
Speaker 11 (10:19):
Lot that's saying a. Lot Donald, sterling once owned AN nba,
Franchise James dolan until he recently Hired Leon, rose was
on that. Trajectory that's the trajectory if you're Matt eshbia
that you are on right now being recognized as arguably
the worst owner in the history of.
Speaker 10 (10:40):
Basketball So Matt ishbia had a press conference yesterday and
was asked about.
Speaker 13 (10:45):
That STEVE. A, Smith you, KNOW i don't take much
he says, seriously you, KNOW i don't think many people.
Do to be honest with the things he said About
Kevin durant just wrong and. Disrespectful of the things he
said About Lebron james were just disrespectful and. Inappropriate would
that be, SAID i don't really Think steven a believes
that what he. SAID i, think you, know he's doing his.
Thing he's on the mic and he's doing AND i
(11:06):
think he'll apologize to, me BECAUSE i think it's disrespectful
to put my name and aligned with anybody that was
kicked out of the league or no longer part, like,
yeah if he wants to, say for the first two
and a half, Years manastry bought the, team we didn't
win a. CHAMPIONSHIP i think you probably said about almost
every owner, ever but, yeah we had high expectations and
we didn't. Win we spent a lot of money and
we didn't.
Speaker 7 (11:25):
Win, yep.
Speaker 13 (11:26):
Yep be critical of me on, That but to even
say that kind of stuff LIKE i, SAID i JUST i,
think LIKE i, said he'll he'll. APOLOGIZE i think he
was out of, line AND i think he knows. THAT
i don't think he really believes.
Speaker 10 (11:34):
That so here's what it knows me. Most he basically,
SAID i don't think STEVEN a believes. That that's code
for STEVEN A smith talks out of his ass a.
Lot he has to talk about a bunch of topics
every day on a three hour, show and he's got
to talk out of his ass a. Lot but here's the,
Problem Like STEVEN a pigeonholed. Himself remember he, said what
(11:58):
makes me different from hot? Takers me And ski journalists are.
Different i'm a.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Journalist was this.
Speaker 12 (12:05):
Those people who don't have a journalism, background who don't
exercise journalistic? Ethics and, beyond how are we responsible for
that when our background.
Speaker 5 (12:20):
Is based on.
Speaker 12 (12:21):
That Skip bayless was a journalist for. DECADES i was
a journalist for. Decades we come on television and those
ethics are.
Speaker 7 (12:34):
Applicable the fact.
Speaker 12 (12:34):
Of the matter is that WHEN i take a, position
it's the same kind of POSITION i would take writing a.
Column the difference is instead of writing eight hundred words
and being limited to that, SPACE i get.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
To talk for a few minutes on each.
Speaker 10 (12:47):
Subject so where's the, Journalism doug and saying That Matt,
ishbia who's been owning for two, years is the worst
or on the trajectory as the worst owner in the
history of.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Basketball there is and and and The the really interesting
kind of bait and switched there is that when you're
if you're a, columnist you, don't you're Not you're not a,
journalist you're a, calumnist you're an. Opinionist if you're covering a,
team or if you're a beat. Writer now that takes journalistic.
Integrity anybody who heard that knows you're out your fucking
(13:20):
mind if you think there's any sort of journalistic integrity
with the things that you were saying on first.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
Take nobody fucking believes that.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Shit and oh, yeah by the, way just the idea
that like you talking about prisoner of the moment right
even even The James dolan, thing what what are? You
what are you talking? About what do you fucking talk?
About have you ever been critical Of James dolan for
turning it over To Isaiah thomas who who also ran
(13:46):
it into the.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
Ground now like you're literally talking about stupid.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Shit and and look DO i Think ishbia made the
right decision in Uh uh in his firing last.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
Year, NO i did. NOT i did.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
NOT i don't think it was a good. MIX i
don't Think frank was the right fit for that. Roster
BUT i also think the roster is. Flooded it didn't
matter who the fuck was coaching that, team they weren't.
Winning then you Hire Mike, budenholzer who is just not well.
Liked it's just Not he struggled to put together a
staff because people.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
Don't want to work for. Him it's not well.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Liked AND i actually think they did the right thing
by blowing that thing, up probably by.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
Starting over next.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Year but the worst owners in sports aren't bad because
they're trying to win and doing everything financially possible to.
Win no one would say that, first it's categorically. FALSE
i can list one hundred owners who are way, worse
way worse for a myriad reasons Than Matt ishbue who
(14:46):
comes in with new, money you, know builds a brand
new practic, facility spends a ton of, money tries to
go win right. Away that doesn't make a bad that
makes bad, decisions that's not a bad.
Speaker 5 (14:56):
Owner so it's.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
Prone to high prisoner of the, moment no journalistic, integrity
and no ability to just read the room and understand
the context of what you're. Saying other than, THAT i
thought Steven a nailed.
Speaker 10 (15:10):
It oh. Man he talks out of his ass for a.
Living he's a, provocateur and he makes a lot of
money doing. It he's very. Effective but this journalist thing
is just so. Funny i'm glad he said that BECAUSE
i could always hold him to. It all, Right so
The athletic did a poll among forty decision makers in.
(15:32):
Baseball this is, Incredible so forty decision makers in, baseball anonymous,
poll and they, asked you, know what are the best run,
organizations best, scouting best. Whatever dodgers were the best run
organization according to these forty decision. Makers But, doug here's
the caveat five of. Them five of these forty did
(15:55):
not put The dodgers in their top three or four
or whatever because of the, resources because of, envy because
they did this whole thing With Shoheo tani where they
pay him in deferred payment whatever it. Is so it
was like a mini what do you call? It boycott
by these five decision makers in. Baseball so here's my,
(16:19):
point AND i kind of feel LIKE i owe the
listeners a little bit of an explanation because not everyone
knows the history of. Baseball Marvin miller took over the
Players union in the late. Seventies throughout the seventies and,
eighties the players took the upper hand from the. Owners
it's really the only sport that exists where the players
took the upper. Hand then in nineteen eighty, seven a
(16:43):
arbitrator said that the owners colluded against the. Players they
didn't sign players in an, offseason they, Colluded and ever
since then there has been a distrust between players and
owners that probably will never be. Fixed you have to
blame the players for them not being a salary structure
In Major League. Baseball blame the players for they're not
(17:04):
being a. Cap it's it has nothing to do with The.
Dodgers So dodgers are working within the. System The yankees
make a hell of a lot more money Than dodgers.
Do by the, way every, year The dodgers just chose
to spend their money on their. Players this.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
YEAR i don't have any problem with what with what he's,
doing zero. NONE i JUST i just. DON'T i don't
have any problem with The dodgers spending a bunch of
money to go and put together a, roster especially with teams,
that excuse, me put together a roster with the money
(17:44):
that they, have because you, know they have show han
on this incredible deal which eventually will come back to,
be you, know to cost them a lot of. Money
but you, know LIKE i JUST i don't even listen
to that. NONSENSE i don't know why you get caught
up in.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
IT i really.
Speaker 10 (17:58):
Don't, well because the athletic pretends to be a a
what do you call, THAT i, guess journalistic site with,
integrity and when they do forty anonymous decision makers in,
baseball and five of them refuse to even Put dodgers
in their top five of best run. Organizations that's like,
(18:18):
petty and it's just it speaks to a level of,
LIKE i don't, know envy that it has nothing to
do with The. Dodgers The dodgers didn't, call didn't bring
this upon. Themselves they're playing within a. Structure, now The Cleveland,
browns they're not one of the best run. Organizations we
pointed out yesterday that there's this great. Dichotomy there's this
(18:40):
great contrast this week of THE gm of The browns
saying That Travis hunter is a unicorn that's going to
play both. Ways you, know if they draft, him it
sounds like they're going to placate his demand to play
both ways full. Time and then you Have John harbaugh
on The, ravens who win a lot of, games and he's,
like it really is hard to do, both and they
(19:01):
shouldn't do. Both they, can't they can't be great at.
Both so just Yesterday Andrew barry said this about Is
Deshaun watson going to play in twenty twenty. Five it's
too early to.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
SAY i can say That deshaun's done a great job of.
Speaker 10 (19:15):
Rehabbing he's been in every, day he's, progressing and that's
really our.
Speaker 8 (19:20):
Focus but it's just too early to.
Speaker 10 (19:21):
Say the problem Is jimmy has. Them on the thirty
first Of, march said That Deshaun watson was a big
swing and a. Miss we took a big swing in the.
Miss we thought we had our. Quarterback we, didn't and
we give up a lot of draft picks to get.
Them so we've dugged ourselves a. Whole me And dee
hold us. Accountable so which is it? Is they're fielding
(19:44):
questions about him playing in twenty twenty, five but the
owner's basically saying like he's Not he's talking about him
like he's not in the.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
Room didn't That isn't that? Weird that's always a weird.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
Thing it usually happens when you get old and they
talk about you in front of.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
You what a good pop we got company coming? Over
somebody put him in the.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Garage it does feel it does feel. Weird does anybody
want him to play this? Year maybe that should have
been the follow up.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
Question any?
Speaker 10 (20:13):
Others, No so The browns are annoying The baseball, Survey.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
Yeah stevende is most. Annoying, Stephene you're knowing.
Speaker 7 (20:24):
Why are we doing? This because we?
Speaker 10 (20:29):
Can Now here's what's cool about this podcast is that
you heard this SoundBite everywhere, yesterday but you didn't hear
it this way because we.
Speaker 8 (20:39):
Can i'm me with the. Coach we start, talking he
runs out of the. Room i'm, like that's kind of.
STRANGE i was. Like then he comes back with THE
gm And i'm, like all, Right so we sit down
the office AND i think we're going to have this long.
Conversation i've flown across the, country and twenty seconds in he,
(21:01):
GOES i mean, Literally i'm talking to THE gm about.
Something and he leans to the edge of his sheet and,
goes should you want to play? Football AND i was, like,
Yeah i'm, Interested and he, said we're going a different
direction in. Quarterback AND i said AND i was kind of. Shocked,
now not shocked BECAUSE i didn't think that was a. Possibility,
listen of course they want to move. On that's totally,
(21:21):
fine but shocked BECAUSE i just flew across the. Country
you could have told me this on the phone if
we'ren't even to have a. Conversation and this is verbatim
exactly how it. Happened SO i, said, huh and he,
goes we just want to know how you want it
released the, messaging AND i, said, VERBATIM i don't give
(21:42):
a shit about the.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Message so, GOOD i JUST i, mean not in any
way the WAY i thought it went. Down and good
For Aaron rodgers telling us how it really. Did why
could it play for you because we. Can't that's it
for the end The Modus. Podcast you got the radio
show every day three to Six eastern twelve to Two,
Pacific Fox Sports, Tradio iHeartRadio.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
App I'm Doug gotlie
