Speaker 1 (00:01):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio. I don't care what
it takes you bring that guy in here. Broadcasting from
the l A Mercedes A MG Studios. They're very cheap.
Here's Jason Smith and Doug Gottlieb. Well that's kind of
in theory. Welcome inside. It is the Dan Patrick Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Jason Smith from The Jason

(00:23):
Smith Show, heard nights here on Fox. Doug Gottlieb, we'll
be here. I don't know if you listen to Clay
Travis a few minutes ago on his show, But Doug
Gottlieb got a flat tire on the way in on
the side of the road right now in the well
the the the Greater Avalon area, I believe, just outside

(00:43):
of Los Angeles. Uh, Doug ran over something in the
carpool lame and drove a couple of miles and got
a flat. The police told him get out of the
car pool landing, get over the side of the road.
And a direct quote from Doug Gottlieb, I am not
going to play hero ball and change this tire on
the freeway. So he's on the side waiting for roadside

(01:04):
assistance which should be there and as soon as roadside
assistance is there, Doug is on his way. He's in here.
He's actually gonna check in with us, coming up in
about twenty minutes, so we'll see exactly where he is,
what happened, and get the entire story. So Doug Gottlie
will be along at some point during the show today.
I got Clark Kellogg coming up a little bit less

(01:24):
than a half hour from now to talk college hoops.
We saw the beginning of the n c A Tournament
last night. Big day already in the National Football League
when it comes to free agents, and a morning that
just has me scratch my head because you know what,
Brown's gonna brown. That's just kind of how it goes.
But let's start with the ramifications of what happened last

(01:44):
night in the n c A Tournament. In the playing games, look,
Radford beat l I U S one. That's great. But
the game that's got everybody talking St. Bonaventure and U
c l A and the Bonnies move on. They beat
U c l A sixty five fifty eight. Here's how
it sounded. The Funnies have not talk of blue bloods

(02:06):
sat Buonaventure winning a game in the n c A
A tournament for the first time in nearly a half century. St.
Bonaventure closing out u c l A here in Tayton
sixty five. The final score West with One radio network
on the call. I feel old because the last time

(02:27):
they won a game in the tournament that was the
year I was born. So yeah, I'm feeling old right now.
But I am pretty happy that I picked St. Bonaventure
to win because the Bonnies of those great brown and
white uniforms, look at the bodies they win. And after
the game, head coach Marchmant dedicated this game to the
nineteen seventeen that had their potential big n c A

(02:49):
tournament run cut short by injury. It can't get um,
you know, I got just four. You know, it just
we pers a band. We just had some toughness. We
made big shots. And you know in nineteen seventy, no
Bob when A got hurt, didn't have a chance to
play us l A. And this is for him. There
we go, dedicating it to Bob Lanier. St. Bonaventure had

(03:12):
their potential national title run back when they were a
national power. I mean it was vent cut short by
his injury. But they win tonight, they will play Florida
on Thursday in Dallas in the East region. But the
big topic of conversation here comes really always from the
losing locker room, and when the losing locker room as

(03:32):
u c l A, there's always going to be talk.
After the game was over, Fire Alfred banners were flown
over the Great Los Angeles area. All right, Steve Alfred,
let's get them out. Let's get that batter up in
the air. Get it going. Steve Alfred is getting all
kinds of hate for U c l A losing this

(03:53):
game to St. Bonaventure. You know, this is the thing
is that U c l A think is a great
job to have in college pass but you think it's awesome, right,
oh man, to be the head coach at u c
l A. This is so great. You get the McDonald's,
all Americans, you get everybody west of the Mississippi wants
to come play there. It's so I would not want
to go within ten miles of the U c l

(04:16):
A job. The Usulate job is a bad job because
you can't really quote win there. You can't do it.
It's impossible because everybody is their expectations are all way
out of whack. You know, they're irrational with what students
and the boosters and alumni and all the big wigs

(04:38):
at the university expect from the program. It's it's irrational.
This is not John Wooden. It's not nine seventies. It's
not that. It's not that anymore. But certain schools, you
have an irrational belief in how well you should be doing,
and you can't achieve that short of winning the national

(04:58):
championship and then how many years we'll let by you
we should be winning again. You can't win here. You
can't you There's always the saying that you're hired to
be fired jobs like u c l A. You are
hired to be fired, in which case, okay, we expect
a lot of things, and you should expect great things
from your college basketball coach, and you're you're football coach.

(05:20):
But to expect unrealistic expectations, I mean, what does that
tell you about the job. U c l A lost
four starters from last year who all went n B A,
n b A, n B A NBA member Lonzo Ball,
t J. Leaf. This is a great team. They ran
into a buzz on Kentucky, which is one of the
great tournament games that you'll see, and they lost. Now

(05:42):
you're replacing four starters. Oh, by the way, you lost
three guys at the beginning of the season because they
decided to go shoplifting at Louis Bitton. Two of those
guys not named Ball were supposed to be pretty good
rotational players for U c. L A. So you're replacing
four starters. You lose two guys right off the bat,
and you know you can't add to that. So now
your your benches shorter, your rotation is shorter. Things are differently,

(06:03):
but still Nope, it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. Going through
I felt like Kevin Coster and draft Day. I've seen
the message boards. I know what they're saying. I've seen
the message board Steve Alfred after the game all night overnight.
It was crazy, get rid of get rid of them,
getting rid of them. Steve Alfred trending higher than St. Bonaventure,
who actually won the game. Because you can't achieve enough

(06:24):
to win there. There's certain jobs, and mainly they're most
in college football, but there's certain jobs I would not
want just because of that, because you can't win there.
Texas A and M in college football, completely irrational. We
should be competing, We should be in the college football
play If you're Texas A and M. Okay, you had
a good run. You got Johnny Manziel and that's great

(06:44):
and you're in the national conversation. But hey, Jimbo Fisher,
come on in. We expect to win a national championship.
Texas A and M take it easy. Florida same way
Urban Meyer created such a program of excellence. Now what
what wise in Florida winning the championship every year? Are
we not in the playoff? Texas? Why would you go
Why would you want to coach Texas? Don't want to

(07:04):
fire Herman already. I can't believe this year we got
the right guy. We don't have the right guy. We
got too impatient, can't do it. Nebraska, Why would you
go to Nebraska? Nebraska still thinks and and then they
got Micro's here is playing running back and Turner gill
is playing quarterback and out with a great team we
have and all black shirts defense. No it's not. They

(07:25):
still think it. But it's not Tennessee. Same thing. Why
it's a Tennessee Tennessee. No, sorry, this is not Peyton
Manning is not t. Martin. You know you got sick
of Phil Fulmer. You kicked him out, and nowtlook where
you are. How are we winning? How are we winning?
Certain schools you just cannot win at and U c.
A Is one of them, no matter who it is.
Ben Holland was. I remember when the USA hired Ben Holland,

(07:47):
it was this is the guy we want and he
brought pitt basketball back into prominence and things were fantastic.
And Ben, he's gonna have the job for a decade.
What happened got to a Final four fired. That's how
it is. It's gonna be the same thing for Steve Alfred.
Same thing is gonna be here for a couple of
years and then it's gonna be we need to go
in another direction because we're not winning as much and

(08:08):
we should be winning. The Pack twelve. The Pack twelve
stunk this year. I don't know why. And it's gonna
be out because people involved in decision making are too unrealistic.
Here's Alfred after the game talking about Usleigh losing and
going home. We gave their zone more momentum because our
inability in the first half. I think we had eleven
turnovers in the first half and maybe nine in the second,

(08:29):
if I'm not mistaken, But uh, twenty turnovers and ten
less shots, and for whatever reason, we just couldn't get
in rythm offensively. I thought we got into forcing things
and you know, we tried dribbling through two and three.
People were passing through two or three and just very uncharacteristic.
I love it when the coach says, you know, for
whatever reason, you know what happened, whatever reason. I don't know.

(08:50):
I'm just the coach. You know, I'm just a guy
that comes here and stands here and and you know,
calls out and barks out stuff, and you know what
listens to me. I'd say, you know, whatever reason, for
whatever reason, I don't know. Did you talked about it
during the games? Yep, I don't know. It's just it's
it's crazy because now we normally play right. It's it's amazing.
I don't get it. For whatever reason that happened, this

(09:11):
is not going to endear Steve Alfred to U C
l A Faithful or anybody. Like I said, certain jobs,
you just can't take the Doug Gottlieb Show, or that sorry,
the Dan Patrick Show. Jason Smith Doug Gottlieb and identifying
for Doug Gottland. We actually had a conversation about that
yesterday eight seven ninety nine on Fox Twitter at how
about a fresca? That's twitter at how about a fresca

(09:32):
a Doug at Gottlieb show. But you know, don't tweet
at him that much. He's got to get his tire
fixed and then you know, drive in. Meanwhile, already Day
two of NFL free agency is off to a big start.
It was late last night that the New York Jets
continued their quarterback makeover, signing Teddy Bridgewater or agreeing to

(09:55):
a deal with Teddy Bridgewater. All contracts can be made
final when the lead year opens at four o'clock PM today.
But after signing Josh McCown for one year in ten million,
which had me throw my hands up in the air,
going okay, so all of this and we did that,
and then Teddy Bridgewater comes in for one year. He
will battle for the number one job with Josh McCown.

(10:17):
Doesn't preclude the Jets from drafting a quarterback in the draft.
Doesn't mean they have to do it at number six,
but they'll draft a quarterback. So they wind up getting
out of Day one of free agency the couple of
late moves. They got Tremaine Johnson, which is a phenomenal move.
One of the better lockdown cornerbacks in the NFL. Not
quite the caliber of a Rivus or a Sherman in

(10:37):
their prime, but still a pretty good one. And the
guy the Jets had to have, so actually had a
pretty good day in free agency yesterday. But they signed
Teddy Bridgewater. Take him off the market, and now we're
sitting and looking at two guys, Hey j mccaren and
Nick Foles. Good luck. If you still need a quarterback,
good luck. Look. I like what the Jets did, not

(10:58):
because I'm a Jets fan as I am, but I
like what they did because outside of getting Kirk Cousins,
what else was gonna be better yesterday? Who else was
better out there that they were gonna go get and
and try to remake the team? There was nobody and
they got. I like Isaiah Crowell. You know, you get
young guys coming off their first contract in the NFL.

(11:19):
I like what they did. I'm pretty app I've convinced
myself that Kirk Cousins would be great if the Jets
got him, and he would stink out loud if they didn't.
So I'm happy either way. I was happy either way.
One of those rare circumstances where if something happened, that
would be great, and if something didn't happen, I could
convince myself it was great too. It was I I
have that ability to do that. I could do that

(11:40):
to me. But he will do that since high school.
If she says yes, then that's awesome. And if she
says no, well then I'm cool and I'll go ask
somebody else. But if she says no, that would be awesome.
I'm so excited. Yeah, that's the best outcome, better than yes.
I convinced myself and that and that's what Kirk Cousins
is going to be. But speaking of the Browns, this
is where my head wants to explode because I look,

(12:04):
I'm not the first guy to say I don't get
the Browns, but I don't get the Browns, right. Mike Freeman,
NFL Bleacher Report insider, joined us on the show yesterday
with Doug and I filling in for Dan and kind
of summed up the Browns off season's plan and in
one small sound bite, what Buffalo is gonna do. They're
gonna try and get a quarterback. What Cleveland's gonna do
will be wrong. That's all we know there it is.

(12:26):
What Clevelands gonna do is gonna be wrong. And now
I really don't get it. So they trade for Tyrod Taylor,
who is the now quarterback bridge quarterback between whoever they get.
They trade a third round pick for Tyrod Taylor. Right now,
follow me on this. They trade a third round pick
for So now they got their guy. Now, okay, it's

(12:46):
obviously they're gonna go, say Kwan Barkley at number one,
and they're gonna go Josh Allen at number four. Because
when you take a quarterback who is ready made, who
is going number one overall, he has to play. And
it's nice to say no, he can sit and watch. Yeah,
that doesn't work because I live in the real world.
He can maybe sit for a month, but in October
he's got to have that job, especially when you're owing four.

(13:09):
So he's got to play. Sam Donald has to play
right away. Josh Rosen has to play right away. They
can't sit. Even Jared Golf, as bad as he was,
played for half of the NFL season. Right now, you
have to go get a quarterback. So that's fine. So
now if I'm thinking, okay, this is what it's gonna be,
it's gonna be Sae Kwon Barkley at number one. It's
gonna be Josh Allen at number four. And that's how

(13:31):
they're gonna do it. And then they let Isaiah Crowell
go to the Jets, further pushing that out there. Okay,
they're not gonna bring back one of their own guys.
That that that they're completely going for Sae Kwon Barkley.
And now today they reach an agreement with Carlos Hide.
So Carlos Hide will be leaving the forty niners and

(13:51):
will sign with the Browns for a three year deal
worth more than fifteen million dollars, including six million in
the first year. This is a big deal for Carlos Hide,
but the Browns do have money. Remember last year they
took on brock Oswilder salary just to get to the
salary cap floor. So now you get Carlos Hide. Okay,

(14:12):
so now three years, fifteen million. He's kind of a
workhorse back, and you're thinking, okay, this is gonna preclude
them from taking say Kwon Barkley at number one, because
now they brought in a running back and they're paying him.
So are you really gonna bring in Barkley and he's
gonna get the majority of the carries because he's a
workhorse back and Carlos Hide is gonna come in for
you know, three years, fifteen million, and spell say, kwan Barkley. Okay,

(14:36):
probably not. But now I say, if you're gonna take
your quarterback number one overall, why did you trade for
Tyrod Taylor last week? I get that you have to
figure out things and know, Okay, we don't know that
this asset is gonna be available. We have to move
on and have contingency plans. But you're picking number one
in the draft. You know who you're gonna take right
at least in theory, you would know. We know the

(14:57):
guy we're gonna get. If it's a running back, we
don't eat a running back. It's a quarterback. We don't
need a quarterback. I don't know why. I don't know
why the Browns decided to say, okay, we'll trade for
Tyrod Taylor. Did you have to get another quarterback? Sure,
you gotta bring somebody else in a veteran. I don't
saying you have to go out and get Josh McCown,
but you have to get somebody. So go out and
get somebody in the free agent market you're gonna pay

(15:18):
one year and eight million dollars to instead of Tyrod Taylor,
who you're on the hook for sixteen million dollars to
making sixteen million this year. And now you went out
and you traded for him for a guy who's gonna
lose the job for any reason by October. Go get
a quarterback. Go get a J mckaty. You like day
J mccarren. You wanted a trade for the guy last year.

(15:40):
So a guy they put in a trade for but
didn't get the paperwork in time, sits by himself while
they go get Tyrod Taylor because the Browns are gonna brown.
Why give up an asset because the third round pick
is a starting player in the NFL. It's a starter,
and you've given that up to go get a guy
that's gonna lose his job anyway, from a guy that
you could sign that could play for a month and
then lose his job. This is what I mean when

(16:02):
I say I I don't get the brown No matter
who it is, whether it's John Dorsey, whoever it is
running the Browns, Kevin Costner, it doesn't matter. The Browns
are gonna brown. I really thought they'd trade three second
round picks of the Jaguars at some point yesterday. I
was waiting for that to happen. I was waiting for
Ray Jennings to be introduced, was waiting for Vonte mac
no matter what, for that sign to come up in
free agency. Was waiting for David Putney to get on

(16:22):
a plane from Seattle to go all the way to Cleveland.
I don't get the Browns, but then again, none of
us do. Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox Twitter
at how about a Fresca? Jason Smith and Doug Gottlieb
in absentia in for Dan Patrick. Will have more on
the n c A tournament coming up in about fifteen minutes.
But coming up next we'll hear from Doug, who will

(16:43):
call in from the road, maybe on the way in.
But something we talked about yesterday in the NFL that
I said was gonna happen and it was gonna be
a trend setting, groundbreaking thing happened a half hour after
I said it well, was it? Find out? Next? Fox
Sports Radio sot up. Guess she's back against you? What's

(17:12):
doing well? I'm Fox Sports Radio, it is. But Dan
Patrick Show just don't get the coming Jason's faith. Doug
Gottlieb in for Dan today, and Doug Gottlieb is kind
of in for Dan right now because he's still on
his way in. Doug Gottlieb joins us now on the hotline.

(17:36):
We got Clark Kellog coming up to talk college hoops
in a few minutes. But Doug on his way into
work today, Doug, you ran into a little bit of
difficulty on the highway. Yeah, the freeway. We stay here
in California. You lived here long enough to Yeah. But
but but I'm getting my bolt. Thank you, sir, appreciate it. Um.

(17:58):
I grew up in New York. Two three, I hit
some debris and I actually like this is worse than
like a tire. My tire blew out. But there's also
I'm gonna have to get some bodywork done to my
com I love my car. Oh my gosh, I haven't
had cough and I have had coffee yet. Like this

(18:18):
is a series of This is a series of unfortunate events.
The first world problem is I'm gonna be wrong, but
I'm calling you as as a as a gentleman is
actually jacking my car up and going to replace my tire.
So so I can't play hero ball, man. I just
I got three kids in the radio show. I can't
play here Rome Ball. No, No, that was a good thing.

(18:41):
Now you were you were driving and you ran over,
uh some kind of debris. How much longer did you
drive until you realize you tire was flat? Well, the
car has a you know, like a digital sensor, and
so I I was like, man, that was pretty big
whenever I hit, And I was not happy about it
because I did think there'd be a little body damage
and uh probably like a mile or two miles, and

(19:01):
you know, all of a sudden, it goes from like
forty p S side a third P S side ten
t S side a P S. Ign'm like, all right,
now I'm trying to pull over. And I saw the
avalon exit on the four O five and pulled over,
and then you know, I was completely at nothing in it,
so I didn't get all the way to the exit.
And then when I was on the phone with during

(19:22):
Clay Travis's show The Cops the same though, He's like, hey,
you should pull it over a little bit further, you know,
be a little safer. So I mean when I first
pulled over, though, man guys were humming by, and I
was like, there's no way of getting out of this guy.
Now it's you know, it's morning traffic in l A.
So I maybe I may make it in time for
the show. Main well that that's what the cops always say,

(19:42):
right that if you get a flat tire, don't get
out of your car, right you think you can run
across the freeware or do something. Don't get out of
your car, stay in your car. I pulled over to
the men, pulled over to the all the way the
other side of the three way. I wasn't on the
I didn't stay in the carpetal and I can. I
hate those guys like, look, dude, if your car can
move at all, get out of the road, right. I
mean these people that get in the accident and they

(20:03):
just freeze right there, like there needs to be some
reenactment to the police, just like get over the side
the road, you see, But that would that would have
been awesome though, Doug, because you know, it's we never
know whose car is causing an accident. It's always we
have a stalled car in the left lane of the
four oh five that's backing up traffic back through the
pulvi of the past. They can actually say, and Doug
Gottleib's car is blocking traffic. You can see it right

(20:26):
there off our Air seven skycamp. There's Gottlieb's vehicle. And
I love here live above the four oh five. And actually,
whatever degree it was, it took out like three guys,
So I was lucky. I only lost one tire. Guy
behind me lost that lost two front tires. Oh well,
it's like it's like a Nascar wreck. It's like somebody

(20:46):
actually dumped out it. He didn't bump you side of
your rubbed you all right? Hey, so real quick. We
got Clark Kellog coming up in a few minutes. As
you're getting your car jacked right now, you see'd your
impression used to losing the last night the same Bondo venture.
One of the more embarrassing attacks of his own defense

(21:06):
I've seen a long time. Um. Look, they were a
Flaunt team and they were super young up um outside
of you know, Thomas Welch and and and Prince Sali
and obviously, uh holiday, but Holiday just Aaron Holliday. That's
as bad as I've seen him play. And he melted
down at the end of ten turnovers like look the

(21:27):
same bottom venture and showed a lot of grit and
toughness and made some shots. But even though they struggled
against his own in the first half, they had to lead,
had command in the second half, got a little selfish
and just just turned the ball over tail and again.
And it wasn't like, look at the zone defense is
pretty run his own offense against it. You know, they've
had some issues my brothers at Oregon State and they

(21:49):
run a good zone and beat him. I called the
game for Fox Sports one, so I might have seen
some of his own issues. But boy, that was that
was more of a U c l A loss than
the same bondomential win them. You know, I say that
knowing Mark Schmidt does a great job there, how big
that win is for the Bonnies. But U c l
A should have won that game. They just spit the bit.
You know. The thing I look at U c l

(22:10):
A is not there's already fire. Alfred banners that are everywhere,
and certainly he's got a short leave. She wasn't the
most popular higher when he first came in. Is are
we going to see some action? Is? Or is Steve
Alfred still gonna be the coach? No? I don't think so.
I mean, look, I don't think Aaron Holliday should go pro,
but I think he's gonna leave. But if he stays,
you get and you get all those guys to come back,

(22:30):
and they have a good recruiting class. Um, they're gonna
be good. I mean, look, it's just hard to lively
young players. But you know, in fairness to the hard
really young players argument, Prince Ali is not a freshman.
He was out there. Aaron Holidays is his junior. He's
been ease out there. Thomas Willis senior hughes out there.
So it's not like they were throwing by freshman out there.
But the freshman didn't react well, and then the the

(22:53):
you know, the juniors and seniors turned the ball over
a bunch. I don't think so. After last year, remember
when they um when they made a run with with
Lonzo ball. You look at how depleted they've been by
the NBA by early entries to the NBA draft boat
the past two years. I don't think it change is
going to be made, but it wouldn't be crazy. I mean,

(23:14):
the more likely, the more likely scenario is he takes
a different job, does he get involved in Louisville and
go back closer to home. That that would be more
likely because you know, you made another n c A
tournament after spectacular season last year, and they went I
think they won thirty games. I can't see that. I
just you know, unless they're mentioned the FBI thing. There's

(23:37):
a lot of coaches that if they're a lot worse
this year, they're going to survive. I'd say Steve all
for will be okay. Yeah, if we have next year,
we have a scandal free tournament, Brent to just think
you sailing next They could be like a two seed.
Syracuse could be like a one seed if we have
teams out out the outside of the FBI scandal right now. Well,
the one thing, and I know you're fired up about
your twoest next year is again they're adding all the

(24:00):
pet you're adding all these new freshmen, like go, look
that you don't win, Like that's the big thing with Kentucky.
I know, they started to kind of figure it out.
And I don't think that this group of freshman is
as good as the others. But John knows, John Cowberry
knows you can't win with all young kids. You just don't.
You're competing against you know, twenty two to some of
these guys are twenty four years old. I was twenty

(24:21):
four when I finished. You know, I was, I was.
I was held back in eighth grade for basketball, and
then I read shirt of when I transferred. You've got
a lot of guys are you know, fifth year transfers
and and m and guys that went to prep school.
So you're doing boys against men when you're recruiting guys
out of high school and that that generally doesn't work. Now, look,
I'm jacked up about next year, but I'm jacked up

(24:41):
about tonight. Now. This is not a ploy to not
talk Syracuse basketball with the big game tonight against Arizona State,
right this, this is not a ploy that I'm gonna
do the whole, you know, tire thing. I'll have a
couple of my friends come by, pretend their cops and
talk to me while I'm on the air. I mean,
you're you're you're legitimate, right, what the Syracuse Arizona States tonight?
It's gonna be a great, guess, an amazing game. I'm

(25:04):
not kidding, this is an amazing game. Like look, Arizona
State is so much fun to watch. They have Tody Justice,
should be like a two guard at in the WCC.
Instead he played some power forward for them. I mean
they throw out, they threw out the They have a kid,
Remy Martin who comes in out the bench. Have you
seen him playing from Arizona State at the backup point guard. Yeah,

(25:25):
he's he's kind of actually a little radic. He plays
so hard and so fast you're like, oh, slow down,
don't dude. His hair flopping all over the place, constant
throwing his head back like he gets fouled. Um, and
he's from really close to where we broadcast from. And
then Trey Holder remarkably improved player. Uh so, look, I
liked this Arizona State team, but they've been playing terribly,

(25:48):
rebounding poorly, defending poorly. You can get to the rim,
but they're gonna pressure you and they're gonna shoot a
lot of threes. I guess the Syracuse team were good.
Hold on, wait a minute, got a T I P
T L I. I appreciate. Oh what's your first time?

(26:16):
Reggie Bell, Reggie Fellas on the radio. Now, Reggie, you
got a listener, Dog, you got a listener. Came in
to fix your car. That's awesome. Actually this true story.
He just said. They played ball with me at Miles
Square Park. That's why I learned to play festival Wow.
Small world dropped me off in Molescart Park from Puntain Valley,
take me over there at seven in the morning, and
he tried and get me in a game when I

(26:38):
was too young to get in the game. And uh,
and then you know, once you get on the court,
you can kind of stay on the court. You can
prove you belong and then um, shoot, oh that's that's all.
That's all crunchy. It's a high center anyway. Um and
uh yeah, all right, Well we'll let you finish and

(26:59):
we'll see you when you get into the bottle of
Remy mart So like, yeah, dude, I just meant was
probably thirty years ago. Yeah, years ago. A circle of
life for you. There you go. All right, So well
a minute, we'll see a road seem a little bit
all right there goes Doug Gottlieb. You know my smooth thing. Look,
I've seen Remy Martin play, but you know the drink,

(27:20):
Remy Martin, it's kind of I meane, a smooth joke
there that I think just didn't go anyway. It is
the Dan Patrick Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Jason
Smith and Doug Gollie, who is getting his tire fixed
by a guy he played ball with twenty five years ago.
That guy is gonna have a story tonight, speaking of stories.
Joining us now on the hot Line CBS Sports college
basketball analysts Extraordinary Clark Kellogg Clark, Welcome to the show.

(27:41):
What's happening? Hey, Good morning Jason. That was pretty fun
listening to that um conversation between Doug and his uh yeah,
I mean yeah, Reggie Bell. Reggie Bell, who now is
famous on the radio coast to coast, whether he wanted
to or not. Now, now now you're okay, right, You're

(28:07):
not pulled over with a flat tire. Everything's fine with you,
all right, So listen. We talked a little bit with
Doug about u c l A has lost to St. Bonaventure.
Let me take a different attack for you. U c
l A is one of those jobs to me, and
mainly they exist in college football, where certain expectations are

(28:28):
so unrealistic it's hard to be a coach there because
you can't meet them. And I feel like U C.
L A Is kind of one of those jobs. Matter
what Steve Alford does. I mean, Look, he lost four
guys in the NBA last year. Two rotational guys are
supposed to be pretty good. We're out after what happened
with Louis Bhutan earlier this season, and they get into
the tournament. In the playing game, they lose. They don't
play well, but still I feel like, you know, this

(28:50):
wasn't supposed to be a banner year for Steve Alfred already,
it's all, let's get rid of Steve Alfred. He stinks,
let's fire him. Sometimes think those expectations are just too much. Clark, Well,
you know, the noises and it's NonStop, and it's constant.
In this day and age, the coaching carousel is not
always a pleasant ride. Uh, You're right. In some places
the noise is louder and much more unrealistic than others.

(29:13):
Um I would have to agree with you. If there's
that kind of murmuring and talk going on that it's
UM definitely misplaced and UM based on UH not really
a realistic perspective. So I tend to try to stay
away from UM giving too much energy, too insignificant noise.

(29:35):
Now it's different for the guy who's in that seat
and Steve Alford, but he's a terrific coach, has done
a really good job wherever he's been, so UM, I'm
trusting that the folks who make the decisions will will
recognize that. When you look at St. Bonaventure, they advanced.
Now they play Florida. Florida's another team that's coming to
the to the tournament. Under the radar. Can you see
another Bonda Venture upset on Friday? Well, clearly Sat botta Venture.

(29:58):
When you've got two guards like Adams and Mowbley and
Stockard is playing terrific. He's average twenty four points a
game and his last five was terrific last night with
great energy. I mean that's a good basketball team. You know,
if you've watched St. Bonadventure, I mean that they won
last night with Jalen Adams really struggling until Lady made

(30:19):
made a big shot in some free throws and mowbli
wasn't at his best level, but they've got two dynamic
scoring guards, and when you have that in tournament time
Jason with other good complimentary pieces, it's not an uncomfortable
matchup for St. Bonadventure. I mean, there's nothing about Florida's
person nail that would overwhelm them. I think it's a

(30:40):
it's a really close call in terms of, um, who's
gonna come out on top. I like Florida in the
game because I've seen them play at a high level
um and they've played a little better defensively of late.
But I think He's gonna be a terrific matchup. You know,
it's funny because Steve Lavin was always someone who used
to tell me that. Every time I would talk to him,
I would say, why do you like this in the tournament? Guards?

(31:01):
Why do you like this team guards? Why do you
like this team Guards? It's the same thing all the
way through great guard play. I like you to make
a big run in the tournament. It's that simple. Yeah.
It gives you an opportunity, Jason, because those guys have
the ball, they can dictate temple or not just offensively,
they can actually help you at the point of attack defense,
and if you've got guards that are pretty athletic, has

(31:21):
some savvy and factor in three point shooting, playmaking ability,
and experience, now you've got something you can work with,
you know. And so it makes a lot of sense.
When you look at teams that have been successful, you'd
be hard for us not to find them with really
good guards and perhaps a pro or two. Whether that

(31:42):
kid is a pro while he's in college and looks
that way or develops into a pro after he leaves,
you typically are gonna find high quality guards and a
pro or two on most of your national championship team
rosters over the last or you can go back as
far as you want to. US CBS Sports College basketball

(32:02):
analyst Clark Kellogg with us here on the Dan Patrick Show.
Jason Smith in for Dan. Alright, so big news. We
find out yesterday Virginia is gonna be without DeAndre Hunter,
their sixth man. He's gonna miss the tournament due to
a broken wrist. He's a tenant four guy, and we
know this is gonna hurt obviously, he's a big rotational
guy coming in. How much is his absence gonna hurt Virginia? Unknowable?

(32:25):
It happens at this unfortunate time, really feel bad for
the program and certainly for DeAndre Hunter, outstanding young player,
versatile at both ends, a major cog in the wheel. Uh.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and that's what Tony
been into. This staff and this team are gonna have
to do. Now. Who steps up? It could be the

(32:46):
emergence of a star that we know nothing about, who's
been incubating and is now going to step into this
enhanced role. Is that the a Keith Day? Is that
Nigel Johnson with a few more minutes? Does Wilkins give
you a little more offensively? Or do the three Big
Red Jerome Guy and Hall elevate their play just a
little bit? Now, I tell you what I'm thinking about this.

(33:08):
When it first happened, obviously your heart sinks, you really,
you really feel badly for the for the team that's
had just a phenomenal, phenomenal year and to have this
kind of an injury crop up now is just terribly
disappointing and disheartening. There's no way to the other way
to look at it. Yet, the games still have to
be played, and where there's great challenge, there's great opportunity too,

(33:30):
So I'm not quite ready to dismiss Virginia. They play
a certain way. They know who they are, They've been
some of the part, the some of the total of
the parts is greater than the individual parts, and so
I think they're gonna jump into this thing with real
focus and tenacity. And we very well could have an unknown,

(33:51):
unheralded star emerge or one of the guys we know
about goes to another level to carry this team, because
they're still good enough to UM to advance deep into
the tournament. In my opinion, Clark, you mentioned the games
must go on. We had the big must watch game
last night between St. Bodadventure and u c l A.
Tonight is Arizona State Bobby Hurley and Jim Beeheim and Syracuse.

(34:12):
How's this one gonna shake out? To this matchup? When
I saw it unfold on the bracket, I mean, Arizona
State has been one of the better small ball teams
in the country if you just look at the first
half of the season. I mean, they had impressive wins
at Kansas Neutral Court over Xavier UM. Those three UM

(34:33):
perimeter guys, Holder Evans and Justice Um can make it
rain from the three point line. Now they're not imposing inside.
They have gotten better with White and Mickey Mitchell launched.
Those guys have actually stepped in them. But when you
can make threes and you've got senior perimeter players, we
just talked about this, Jason, Um, you don't have to

(34:55):
be great defensively, get some turnovers, be disruptive, and then
make get threes and attack. That's what they do. If
they do what they are capable of, I think they
move on. Syracuse has been up and down, as as
Arizona State. But I like the firepower of Arizona State,
and um, that's where I would hang my hat if

(35:16):
I was picking this game, I would I would lean
in Arizona State's way because of the offensive firepower. You
can fall on Twitter at Clark Kellogg CBS. That's at
Clark Kellogg CBS. Clark has always appreciate your time and
as a Syracuse alum, I really hope you're wrong understood
that I can figure that drive drive safe, don't got

(35:38):
leave yourself okay. I will try not to say alright,
take it easy. There goes Clark Kellogg again. Fall on
Twitter at Clark Kellogg CBS. We will have more on
the n c A tournament coming up when Doug Gottlieb
arrives here on campus. But look, I can't tell you
how nervous I am about Syracuse Arizona State. Look it

(35:59):
was I was just happy to get in. I was
just so happy, and I didn't care. I didn't carry
where the last team. I didn't care at all. I
didn't care what people were saying. I didn't care. Now
I feel like, okay, now we gotta win now now now, now,
now we gotta win because we Look, I'm realistic. How
far we're really gonna go Final four? I mean, how
really far are we gonna go as an eleven seed?
Final four? We went there as a tense seed. But

(36:20):
just to win tonight, to win one game, to say, okay,
we can validate being in as an eleven seed. That's
what I want. That's what I want for Christmas tonight,
even though it's you know, it's March eight, seven, seven
ninety nine on Fox Twitter at how about a Fresca?
Jason Smith from The Jason Smith Show, heard nights here
on Fox Sports Radio in for Dan Patrick gott Leeb
on the Way, But coming up next, the Big winners

(36:42):
and losers so far. The move I like the most
in the NFL free agency and the move I liked
the lease, and I might have to just eliminate the
Browns from consideration. With the Carlos Hide stuff and the
Tyrod Taylor trade, I might just have to know. It
might have to be just a non Brown's Best and
Worst Move so Far award. That's coming up next Fox Sports,

(37:25):
Fox Sports Radio, The daven Patrick Show. Jason Smith from
The Jason Smith Show nights here on Fox Sports Radio
to eleven Pacific and for Dan Doug Gottlieb here momentarily
with his car fixed on the side of the freeway.
He is now on his way into work. Before we
get to a quick bit about an awesome bit of
radio that happened about twenty minutes ago. Jered McKinnon, Hey,

(37:49):
Fantasy fans, on his way to the forty Niners, a
four year deal worth about thirty million dollars. So now
Carlos Hyde goes to the Browns, who agrees to go
to the brown which still I don't get. But now
there's your replacement right there. Jerick McKinnon now going to
the forty Niners seven and a half million dollars per year.

(38:10):
So Doug Glive, in case you didn't know, got a
flat tire on the way and to do the show.
Today he was on Clay Travis Show and talked about how, hey, listen,
my my car broke down. I got a flat tire,
ran over something, waiting for someone to come fix it.
And when he called in to give us an update
about twenty five minutes ago before we talked to Clark Kellogg, Uh,

(38:32):
something very strange happened. The guy who came to fix
Doug's car was someone Doug played basketball with about twenty
five years ago. And here's how it sounded on the air.
When Doug met a guy, he realized, Oh, we played
ball together. Oh Bell, right, Reggie Bell is on the radio.

(39:02):
Now you got a listener, Doug, you got a listener.
Came and fix your car. That's awesome. Actually this true story.
He just said. He played ball with me at Miles
Square Park. That's where I learned to play fastball. Wow,
small World. Dropped me off the Molescart Park from Tountain Valley,
take me over there at seven in the morning and
he try and get me in a game when I
was too young to get in the game and uh,
and then you know, once you get on the court,

(39:23):
you can kind of stay on the court and you
can prove you belong. So there it is. A guy
Doug played basketball with, came to fix this car. Reggie Bell. Dude,
Reggie Bell sounds like a guy that was awesome right here.
Reggie Bell. What a legend. Man. He had this crossover,
he had a couple of moves. I still don't know
how he did it. Man, Dude, Reggie Bell was fantastic. Oh,

(39:44):
you don't want to play against Reggie Bell. You want
to play on Reggie Bell's team. Sounds like a guy
that shot a lot though. You know, I don't think
there's a lot of assist going on. I think Reggie
Bell is a guy that fills it up. But Reggie Bell,
you got you sound like a great player right there,
I got Reggie Bell. Yeah, this guy scored forty a
game and you only played a fifteen by ones. But
he would still find a way to score forty game.
Was awesome. Reggie Bell, dude, Reggie Bell, legend, Reggie Reggie buckets.

(40:08):
They probably call them, let's sake, that's that was his nickname. Dude,
that's right, Reggie Bell. Oh you be Reggie Buckets man? No,
he was great, Gottlie, but ah he passed, you know,
he passed to Reggie. He had a couple of nice passes.
I mean, yeah, you Gottlie's got of a point guardage
to Reggie. Was it man? Reggie Buckets was the bomb?
Reggie Bell now legend Coast to Coast eight seven, seven

share with you practical knowledge gain for more than ninety
years of experience. We know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. Find an agent at
Farmers dot com. So Day two in NFL Free Agency
starting off a lot like Day one? Did we have

(40:52):
breaking news early on in the day. Carlos Hide is
headed to the Cleveland Browns, which I don't understand because
the Browns, you would think getting Tyrod Taylor, They're not
gonna take a quarterback at number one because it wouldn't
make sense because why would you trade a third round
pick for a quarterback who's just gonna lose his job?

(41:13):
After a month to a guy who has to play.
You take Donald A. Rose or even Josh Allen number
one overall? They have to play, right, I mean, that's
how it works in the real world. In the NFL.
Number one picks play at some point very early. Why
would you trade away a pick that's going to be
a starter to get a guy? So okay, this means
they're gonna take say Kwan Barkley at number one. All right,

(41:33):
that's fine. But now they signed Carlos Hide today three years,
fifteen million, six million dollars guaranteed for this year. I
don't get it. Are you really gonna draft say Kwan Barkley?
Is he gonna be a part time player? Is that
what the Browns are doing? They drafted a part time
guy at to take number one overall? I don't get it.
I mean, I don't get the Browns. Just when you
think the Browns have turned the quarner, like, okay, the Browns,

(41:55):
then you go, all right, the Browns clearly is still
the Browns, whether it's John Dorsey whoever else, it is
Sachi Brown however that's running things. The Browns are still
gonna brown. But as we are at the beginning of
day two. We have big winners and losers in NFL
free agency. The deals I like the most, the deals
I don't like the most. That's coming up next right
here The Dan Patrick Show. Jason Smith in for Dan,

(42:17):
maybe with Doug, maybe not Fox Sports Radio. Well, the
field is set. I is it that I can't beat
some woman in the bracket ship, the one seeds, the
eight seeds, the play in Cinderella's and favorites alive. I
hate my bracket. Speaking of favorites, I had Dan's favorite.
I've heard that. Did you know? You can hear any

(42:38):
of your favorite Dan Patrick moments on The Dan Patrick Show. Up,
Let's get the way back machine. You can also hear
upsets or things that make people upset. To set the
most whole subjects that I've got enough. I don't really
care to you anymore, but to listen to the plaver
simply by downloading the Dan Patrick Show app in the
iTunes Store or Google Play. Speaking of well curated content,

(42:59):
the new Dan Patrick Show app curated Welcome to the
Dan Patrick Show. Dayton knows how to party as tournament
teams fly about the country. What do you do on
the road? So too just Dan and the Dan that's

(43:22):
it was a fact flight while they lie to Los Angeles,
Jason Smith and Doug gottlie sit in. I don't care
what it thinks you bring that guy in here broadcasting
from the l A Mercedes A MG Studios. They're very cheap.
Here's Jason Smith and Doug gottlie Doug Gottlieb in theory.
It is the Dan Patrick Show. Jason Smith from the

(43:44):
Jason Smith Show nights here on Fox Sports Radio in
for Dan. By the way, you want to take a
look at this next few minutes on periscope right now,
Fox Sports Radio on Twitter and we're periscoping it up.
I've worned my best offers an airplane T shirt just
to periscope this. I mean, I have a plethora of

(44:04):
Jefferson airplane T shirts and I wore my best one
for you today. So hopefully Elijah, our social media director,
is happy with my choice. And I'm not, you know,
too white, balancing out the camera too much. So again,
Fox Sports Radio on Twitter as we periscope the next
few minutes here on the show. Yeah, Doug Gottlieb on
his way in because you got a flat tire driving

(44:25):
into work today and for reasons passing understanding and something
that can only happen in certain cities. Well, I guess
it could happen anywhere, but it happened here in Los Angeles,
so I can say like it only happens in l a. Uh.
Gottlieb got his tire fixed by a guy he played
basketball with twenty five years ago in the Park Street
legend Reggie Bell. Guy came to fix got leaves tire.

(44:49):
Gottlieb said, he's on the on the air with us.
He said, what's your last name? He said, Gottlieb. Guysboy,
you Doug Gottlieb. Yeah, yeah, Reggie Bell. Yeah, we play
basketball together. It's like twenty five years ago. Reggie Bell.
When Gottlieb gets here, he has to get Reggie buckets
trending on Twitter. I mean we have to, I mean
we gotta get red because you know, a guy like
Reggie Bell is not a guy that you know, he
was a little bit of a wall flower. He just rebounded. No, no,

(45:11):
Reggie Bell is a guy that scored. Reggie Bell is
a guy that scored a lot of points, didn't pass
a lot. Would yell at Doug when Doug wouldn't pass
to him. That's he's hearing Reggie Bell. Like now, Reggie
Bell is a legend man. Reggie Bell, he get it
from forty ft away. He was like LaMelo Ball. Before
LaMelo Ball, he was that good. That's Reggie Bell, Reggie buckets.
So Doug is on his way. We'll talk more. N

(45:33):
c A tournament coming up in a few minutes. U
c l A losing last night to St. Bonaventure and
a loss that has a lot of people here in
Los Angeles upset. But Day two in NFL free agency
has started off kind of like Day one, with a
lot of names already changing places. We talked a few
minutes ago about Carlos Hide, who was agreed to go

(45:53):
to the Cleveland Browns for three years and fifteen million.
I don't understand the Browns. I really don't the Browns.
They trade Tyrod Taylor, So you think they're not gonna
take a quarterback, They're gonna take a running back. They
get Carlos Hides. Maybe they're not gonna take a running back,
They're gonna take a quarterback. So then why do you
trade for Tyrod Taylor? Why do you not just go
out and sign a guy for the month. He's gonna

(46:14):
start until he hands the job over to Sam Donald
or Josh Allen or Josh Rosen. I I don't know.
I don't get it. I know you have to make
contingency plans. But the brown you know you're picking number one,
you should know what you're gonna do. We're gonna take
this quarterback right here. This is our plan. Because if
you were taking a quarterback at number one, you don't

(46:34):
go out and sign a guy to be a bridge
guy for a month, because in the real world, number
one picks have to play right away. They can't sit.
Even Jared Goff, as bad as he was, played the
majority of the season his rookie year because he had to.
And look what happened middle of the season when you
didn't play Jared Goff. What happened Jeff Fisher got fired.
Didn't play him early enough and he got fired. You

(46:56):
can't have a number one pick sit on the bench.
It just doesn't happen. Number one overall picks don't sit.
So with that in mind, doesn't mean you don't have
to get a quarterback. But why do you trade a
third round pick for a guy who's gonna start for
a month at most and then get benched. Why would
you do it? I don't understand. You go out and

(47:17):
get a guy in free agency that you signed for
one year and seven or eight million, you saved that
money and give it to another free agent. I mean
you like day J McCarron. In the middle of last year,
you try to trade for him, didn't get the paperwork
filled up. Now you don't like him? No, no, no no.
We don't want a J. Mccariren to come in. But
you mean we're gonna make a trade for him now
you can get them for free and you don't have
to give him as much money. No no, no, no no no,
that's what they'd be expecting us to do. We're gonna

(47:38):
go the other way now, Sunny Weaver is in charge
of things now in the Brown's draft room, we're gonna
do think we're gonna trade three number one picks, the
number one overall pick, and then trade back for him
and get David Putney. That's what we're gonna do. I
don't get it. I don't get the Browns. Not that
you didn't need to get a quarterback, but you didn't
need a trade for one. Lose a draft pick of
a guy who's gonna be a starter, because that's the

(47:58):
third round picks. Aren't even you get the fourth round picks.
These guys are supposed to come in and start now,
and I don't get it. You could assign him for free.
But if you're getting se Kwon Barkley, that's fine. But
are you really gonna draft sae Kwon Barkley is gonna
split time with Carlos Hide. You're gonna sell that to
your fan base. Now we have two great running backs.
Wait wait, wait, wait, wait running backs. You can get
running backs either say Kwan Barkley is special and you

(48:22):
draft him number one overall and he's gonna carry the
ball five times a game, or you say we can
get a running back someplace else and we graft a
quarterback number one. So I don't get it. I know
they're hedging their bets. And if you're any other team
in free agency, yeah you do that because that's what
you have to do. If you're picking fifth and six

(48:43):
in the draft, you'd like to think of certain player
is gonna be there, but they're probably not, so all right,
we have to make a plan instead. But the Browns
pick first, and they pick fourth. You put a list
of four players down and say, okay, these are the
two guys who want the most, and then the next too,
And the best part is you know the guy you
want number one overall. So I don't get why you're

(49:05):
you're spending money on contingency plans and when you don't
have to, and making trades and losing assets when you
don't have to. I really it's like whoever walks in
to the Browns like, Okay, whatever I've been doing in
the NFL, now I'm gonna do things really questionably, And
that's kind of how it's gonna go. I don't get it.
Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven

(49:26):
six three six nine. Twitter At, how about a Frisca?
That's twitter At, how about a Fresca? Jason Smith in
for Dan Patrick, Doug gottlieb. I'm hearing seven thirty maybe
five for us here in Los Angeles. We'll see we'll
have a Doug gottlie pool. Rob Garret's got a pool going.
Doug gottlie What time he walks through the door after

(49:46):
getting his UH tire fixed? Set at seven thirty six,
seven thirty six. I own on well seven o'clock, l
a traffic. It is tough for the presidents in town.
I I will say, I will say under or I'll
pick a time. I'll say Doug Walks. I'll say seven
thirty one for Doug. Put me down for seven thirty

(50:07):
one in the pool, got you down for fifty. There
we go, Wow, this this is expensive. Pool. All of
a sudden wants seven forty five. Okay, Rob, what are
you taking for the Gottlie pool? I'm taking the over.
I got him at seven thirty seven. Hen look at
the red clock, not the green clock, and that changes

(50:28):
things all right. If he comes into twenty six seconds,
you're over. Yep, you're over. You can't do it. This
money we could spend, we could have got got leaves, tire,
fixed form for free. Reggie Bell, everybody, Reggie Bell, Reggie Buckets.
So as we sit here, day two in free agency.
Told you a few minutes ago, Jerrick McKinnon headed to
the forty niners four year deal worth thirty million dollars.
McKinnon split time last year with Latavius Murray. Now Dalvin

(50:51):
Cook is back in Minnesota. No spot for him, so
here he is now taking Carlos hides place. The musical
chairs continues. So he's there playing any down, any situation
Fantasy football owners right now. But my buddy Michael Fabiano's going,
oh yeah, I gotta move him up my draft board.
Gotta move him up like Jerick McKinnon. Gonna move him up,
Gonna move him up. What are the moves so far

(51:13):
that have been the best the first day plus the
free agency and the worst the first two days of
free agency. Let's start. Let's start with the worst and
then we'll get to the best, right, something to look
forward to get to the best worst moves of free agency.
I actually have a tie for these worst two moves.
Number one. Sam Bradford Arizona one year, twenty million dollars.

(51:35):
Sam Bradford. You've seen over the course of the last
twenty four hours when this story broke, all the money
Sam Bradford has made in the NFL to be such
a mediocre quarterback, and yet he's found another way to
squeeze twenty million dollars out of the Cardinals for one
year in a vacuum of Sam Bradford a bad investment. No,

(51:55):
because he's not gonna be great. He's not gonna be terrible,
and in the right situation he will be passable for
a little bit, which is really what Sam Bradford was
at in his heyday, completely overrated as the number one
overall pick, never look up to expectations. A lot of
that is on Jeff Fisher in the Rams. They never
got him the help he needed offensively, never brought in

(52:17):
weapons to hey, here's a big first round pick for
you wide receiver, and they never did that for him,
so he floundered for a long time. But Sam Bradford,
all he's gonna do is get hurt. That's all he's
going to do. He's not gonna make it through a
whole season. He's gonna get hurt because it's what Sam
Bradford does. Sam Bradford gets hurt, knee injury. Last year,

(52:39):
he got hurt, lost a job, came back, got hurt
again one year, twenty million. He's thirty years old. He's
thirty years old, Sam Bradford. This is not going to
happen for him. What you're gonna do is you're gonna say, okay, wow, Sam,
but you'll see the same thing. Sam bradfil looks great
in uh in in minicamp boys, sam bradfil looks great
here in preseason boys, Sam brad If it's gonna look awesome,

(53:01):
and he's gonna get hurt. Right. He played fifteen games
from Minnesota in and he was a twenty and five guy.
This what I mean when I say he's gonna be passable. Right,
and that wasn't bad. He had an okay run. But
twenty and five is not you know, thirty eight and ten.
But he played two games last year. He's thirty, and

(53:23):
he gets hurt every single season. All right, you have
to deal with some kind of injury, some kind of worry.
With Sam Bradford. The breakout is not is not gonna
be a thirty years old. This is who you are.
You're thirty years old. This is the quarterback you are.
All right, It's just not gonna happen, Sam Bradford. Now
you have to sign him, give him twenty million, and
then I have a contingency plan to say, okay, when

(53:46):
he gets hurt. Now, who is our guy gonna be?
You can sign you and and look, they're gonna draft
a quarterback and they're gonna get a quarterback their quarterback
in the future. But why give a guy one year
and twenty million. What he didn't have to couldn't give
an a J McCarron one year an eight million. At
this point, a J McCarron would play for day the
expenses he would pay for. He listen, what what what's
my uh? What's my per diem for the day? Forty
five dollars? Yeah, great, I'll play for forty five dollars

(54:08):
a day. A J McCarron would play for that. So
you completely overpaid for a guy who's gonna get hurt
the other worst. Signing Mo Wilkerson to the Green Bay Packers. Look,
I'm not lying to you. I'm a Jets fan. This
past year, Mo Wilkerson had a chance to kick in

(54:29):
the remainder of his contract with the Jets, which was
a great one. But what did he do in a
year where it's almost as like a contract to year
four because he was due to be paid sixteen million
dollars this coming year by the Jets. How did he
perform in that year leading up to this because he knows, okay,
if I don't play well, the Jets are gonna cut me,

(54:49):
and this contract, this rich contract I got, is going away.
What did he what was what was his year? He
was out of shape. Everybody within of Jets say he
looked like he lost his desire to play football. He
was late to meetings constantly, constantly. Four times during the
season he was late to meetings and had to be
benched the final three or four games, I believe of

(55:12):
the regular season because the Jets didn't want him to play,
get hurt and have his injury guarantee kick in for
two thousand and eighteen. This is the guy that Green
Bay has said, no, we're gonna get you, we want you.
If this is how the guy performed in a year
where it was like a contract here for him, He's
signing a one year deal with Green Bay. I know
it sounds like a great prove it situation. Hey, prove it,

(55:34):
you'll get a big deal somewhere. How is that going
to happen when he had the same stakes a year ago, Steaks,
when you had the same stakes a year ago, How
is he going to do that this year while it's
a new start with the with the Packers. Yeah, not
buying it. Two worst moves Bradford Moe Wilkerson. The two
best moves so far. Number one Jimmy Graham to the Packers.

(55:59):
Watch how good he will be with a team that
will realize how to use him. He's got a chip
on his shoulder. I'm not saying Jimmy Graham was was
It was all the Seahawks fault. He had times where
he quit on plays, where he didn't block, times he
just gave up. He dropped a lot of passes, and
that's certainly colored a lot of his time in the

(56:22):
Seahawks in a bad way. All Right, that was not
the Jimmy Graham that was a dominant force, And for
a while it was, Boy, who would you rather have
Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski. A lot of that is
on him, But the Seahawks never figured out a way.
If I had to read one more time, Pete Carroll
after a game saying, point, you know, we missed a

(56:44):
couple of chances to get Jimmy Graham the football. There
was a couple of plays, ah we didn't get on
it because we didn't get into the right read, or
we didn't get to do this, or there was a penalty.
How we gotta get I mean every week, that's what
it was. We missed a couple of big chances to
get Jimmy Graham the football, and Jimmy Graham wasn't dominating,
So that's where his personality went. And yeah there were
times where he quit on it, but it was just

(57:06):
a bad fit. It was a bad fit with Seattle
where Russell Wilson had never really used the tight end.
And so now suddenly it's okay, we got this new
weapon and now go ahead. Now tight End's gonna be
your guy. Oh well, okay, it's kind of hard. Aaron Rodgers,
who has turned tight ends, many tight ends into big

(57:27):
time weapons, sur Jared Cook into a huge weapon a
year ago huge, and now Jimmy grahams gonna show up
in Green Bay. Watch out for Jimmy Graham. There not
quite the Vikings getting Kirk Cousins, but Jimmy Graham and
Green Bay. I'm telling you watch for the renaissance revival
out of him. The other great move I like the

(57:48):
most Dion Lewis to Tennessee. I like the young guys
free agents coming off their rookie contracts. That's that. The
the guys in free agency's seven years old. Those are
the guys you go get. The big star players who
were thirty. I never am not interested in Okay, you
know what, that's great, but let's stay away. But those

(58:09):
rookies coming off their first contract or their first kind
of contract, when they hit free agency in their mid twenties,
those are the guys to go get. And here's Dion
Lewis who did everything for the Patriots last season. Everything.
He runs back, kickoffs, catches the ball out of the
backfield a lot can be a guy that runs the

(58:31):
ball times a game. He can do everything, he can
fill any role. He will help Marcus Mariota so much
catching passes out of the backfield. And you say, why
did the Patriots want him? They're kind of loaded up
in the backfield anyway. You got James White, you gotta
but what are you gonna do? You know you you
want to bring him back, but you know he got
a got a nice contract a million from the Titans.

(58:51):
This is a big signing for Tennessee. Watch out for
Tennessee in the South. Now this could be an era
of three or four years where they are at the
top of the division. I thought they'd be better than
they were last year, but they still got in the playoffs,
still won a big playoff game. I thought Marcus Mariota
will take, would would have taken that next step last season.

(59:12):
Maybe that step comes this year, but they are in
that that cusp now is saying, hey, we're gonna challenge
for this division every single year. Dion Lewis is a huge,
huge move for them. Twitter at how about a Frasca
phone number eight seven seven on Fox. There you go,
best and worst moves of free agency so far. The
best moves Jimmy Graham, Dion Lewis, the worst one so far,

(59:34):
Sam Bradford and Moe Wilkerson coming up in fifteen minutes.
We've got Charles Davis stopping by NFL on Fox attles
as he talks NFL free agency with us. But we
got more on the n c A tournament straight ahead,
including what used to be a great job in college
basketball after last night. Officially you can say is a
job you don't want. That's coming up next to Dan

(59:56):
Patrick Show, Jason Smith in four Dan Fox Sports Radio,

(01:00:18):
Fox Sports Radio. It is the Dan Patrick Show, Jason
Smith and Doug Gottlieb. At some point in for Dan,
Doug on his way into work after getting a flat
tire on his way in, but did have his tire
fixed by a guy he played street basketball with twenty
five years ago, legend Reggie Bell. I keep looking to

(01:00:39):
see if Reggie Bell is trending on Twitter or Reggie
Buckets is trending on Twitter, but I can't. Doug's gotta
get on that. But he is driving in, so there
is that, So Doug will be in momentarily. We got
Charles Davis coming up in a few minutes. NFL on
Fox Analyst to talk all the latest moves in NFL
free agency. Jerick McKinnon headed to the San Francisco forty
Niners on a three year deal. This on the heels

(01:01:02):
of Carlos Hide leaving for the Browns. We got some
brown stuff for you in a couple of minutes, and
like I said, Brown's gonna brown. But college basketball, we
get set for day two of the first four tonight
Arizona State Syracuse. Certainly the marquee game. Last night it
was St. Bonaventure and U C l A and Oh Boy,

(01:01:22):
an embarrassing defeat. It's the Bonnies moving on. The Bunnies
have not all the blue bloods Saint Bonaventure winning a
game in the n c a A Tournament for the
first time in nearly a half century. St. Bonaventure closing
out U c l A here in Tayton sixty five.

(01:01:46):
The final score Westwood One Radio Network. Who was it
that said the Bonnies we're gonna win me? I forget
who that was it like the Bonnies to make or
run me? I forgot? You know somebody, It'll come to me. St.
Bonaventure wins it. They move on to face Florida on
Thursday night. Meanwhile, for u c l A, right after
the game last night, in the game, USILA did not

(01:02:06):
play very well. They're they're start their best players did
not play well. Fire Alfred banners were flying. It was crazy.
Every single fan on social media has had it with
Steve Alfred. Now, look, there's a bigger point to be
made other than just hey, Steve Alfred, should he stay
or should he go? He was not a popular higher
at u c l A when he came in, right,

(01:02:28):
He's had to fight through that. Last year had a
phenomenal season. They won thirty games. It was Lonzo Ball,
t J. Leaf. They put four guys in the NBA.
Now here's this year for U c l A and
they get into the tournament. All right, they get into
the playing game, but they're in the tier in the
tournament when you're in the playing game. Because if I
say that for Syracuse, I gotta say that for u
c l A. They get in. And this is a

(01:02:50):
year in which you're replacing four guys who moved on
to the NBA. You lost two rotational players, two guys
were gonna be pretty good that wound up getting kicked
off the team for the season because of the shoplifting
at Louis what's on. So now you're down there, you're
replacing guys, and two guys you thought were gonna be
contributors are not going to be there. Still, Steve Alfred

(01:03:14):
gets U c l A into the NC tournament, and
that's not enough, and now it's fire Alfred. Look, there's
certain jobs in sports that I wouldn't want to be near.
If I had a chance to be a head coach,
I wouldn't want to get within ten miles of the
u c l A job, even though, as I said,
I'm within ten miles of the u c l A campus.
U c l A head coach basketball is not a

(01:03:37):
good job because expectations are unrealistic. You can't quote win
at u c l A short of winning the national
championship and then no more than five years later winning
it again. You can't win because you have a fan
base that is too unrealistic. You have regents and boosters

(01:03:57):
and the school that is unrealistic as of what they
say success should be in college basketball. Certain school certain
schools feel that way. And yes, you are hired to
be fired, but you're really hired to be fired because
the clock is taking the minute you walk in the door.
And it's okay, I expect the national championship in two years.
And if you don't get it, then then you know what,

(01:04:20):
We'll get somebody else in. And now Steve Alfred's gonna
have to go someplace else and try to resurrect his
career because it's gonna end badly for him, whether it's
this year or him stepping away and going someplace else.
You know, Doug Gottlie was on with us when he
stopped in to tell us that he was on his
way in after the flat tire and said, maybe Louisville
is a spot from at some point down the road
he would extricate himself away from U c l A,

(01:04:41):
possibly before they would let him go. U c l
A is a bad job. Expect you can't win there
because this is not college basketball. It's not nine. You know.
Certain schools just think we have to get back to
the glory days. And you walk by every day in
Pauli Pavilion, see and see pictures and cutouts of Bill
Walton and Kareem abdul Jabbar and Jamal Wilks and all

(01:05:03):
these guys and Ed O'Bannon and and you go, boy,
how do we we gotta get back there? You can't.
Those days are gone. It's a different time in college
basketball now. Nobody came in with more hoopla and hype
than Ben Hellan. Ben Hallend had remade pit basketball. He
was it. He was gonna be great. And he comes
and he gets to a final four. He missed the
tournament once a couple of times, and then Ben no done.

(01:05:23):
Well Wait a minute, whoa? He was so great? Now
he's not and he's been to a final four. Doesn't
buy you anything. Certain schools, you cannot succeed. I would
not want a part of that job because you're not
put in position to succeed right now. Mainly that happens
a lot in college football. It's like Texas A and
M completely unrealistic. Jimbo Fisher coming, what do you expect?

(01:05:44):
We expect the national championship? Uh, your Texas A and M. Okay,
you got you got lucky. You're ere with with Johnny Manzel.
You had a nice little run there, but you're Texas
A and M. All right, you're not a national championship
contender every year. Florida got to realize the same thing.
This is not urban Meyer. That was great, but that
was a decade ago and things were things were awesome,

(01:06:06):
and you were winning all that and then he left
in that Well, why aren't we doing that again? Because
it's different because times change, Texas same way on a
fire Herman. Right now, Oh, we gotta get bat because
you got sick of mac Brown. You got sick of winning. Oh,
you should be winning the Big twelve every single years
that have every other year, going to the playoffs every year.

(01:06:27):
Now let's get rid of back Brown. And now now
you're floundering because your expectations are unrealistic. Nebraska horrible job,
would not want that at all. Nebraska pill still thinks
it's five and mic Rozier is winning the high when
that was eight three, Mike Rozier is winning the Heisman
Trophy and Turner Gills at quarterback and look at this
great team you have and all the black Shirts defense. No,
that's not the way it is Tennessee football. Same thing,

(01:06:50):
completely unrealistic. We got we got sick of going nine
and three every year. So let's get rid of Phil Fulmer.
Let's push him out, retired to him, and now we're
on another head coach. Certain jobs you just don't want
a part of because you're not gonna succeed there, and
all you're gonna do it'll be you'll be high profile
for a couple of years, and in the end you're
gonna get fired and you're gonna have to get a

(01:07:12):
worse job to remake your image to show that I
can still win and I can still do that. U. C.
L A Is absolutely right up there. They're they're the
job in college basketball where expectations are unrealistic. I mean,
North Carolina, Duke and Kentucky they expect every year. But
you know what, that's fine because they produced that way
because that's what Calipari does, That's what Roy Williams does,

(01:07:33):
That's what coach k does We're in the national conversation
all the time. That's realistic. Michigan State. Tom is though,
that's realistic. U c l A unrealistic, most places unrealistic
eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox Twitter at how
about a fresca? Jason Smith from The Jason Smith Show
her nights here on Fox Sports Radio in for Dan Oh.

(01:07:56):
We did the Doug gottlie pool a few minutes ago.
Right now it's showing seven already. Five is Doug Gotlieb's
arrival time. I was in for fifty bucks and I
took seven thirty one and in forty seconds, I'm gonna
be off the clock. Well, right now, you're a winner, Joel.
Right now, Joel running the board is a winner. Maybe
we gotta see what Tommy actually walks in. We gotta wait.
I mean, I'm gonna lose my time in twenty eight seconds. Doug,

(01:08:18):
drive faster, I mean in theory, in theory, drive faster,
I mean not in real life, because it's traffic. Drive faster.
You got twenty seconds to walk in the door, Doug
Golli was not walking to the door. Doug Gottlieb is
not walking through that door. You think Douck GOLLI, he
is not walking through that door. Charles Davis on the
way in a couple minutes, NFL on Fox, Analyst, and

(01:08:42):
some more Brown's news. That's gonna make my head explode.
Today are the pro days for Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen.
But today and tomorrow are the pro days for Baker
Mayfield and Josh Rosen. Hugh Jackson head coach John Dorsey
GM are skipping the pro day days of Mayfield and
Rosen because they want to focus on free agency and

(01:09:04):
reshaping the roster. Alonzo Highsmith, vice president of Player Personnel,
will attend Mayfield's pro day. They're gonna have a representation
at Rosen's pro day as well. They're also gonna try
to conduct private workouts with Mayfield and Rosen as well
as Josh Allen and Sam Donald. See. Here's here's the thing.
This is why the Browns are crazy, is they're picking

(01:09:25):
number one. You don't You don't know by now, you
don't know. You Still the four guys are on the board.
Still the four guys. You gotta see a guy throw
it as pro day State's I I don't get it.
I don't get why you signed Carlos Hyde if you
could draft sa Kwan Barkley. I don't know why you
trade for Tyrod Taylor when you're gonna take a quarterback
number one who's gonna play right away. I don't get it.
I don't get the Browns joining us now. Maybe Charles

(01:09:47):
Davis help us out here. Here Here is on a hotline.
See you can help me out with the Browns a
little bit here. I'll do my dad. I know it's
a tall task, it's a very tall task. But when
you try to figure out what the Browns are doing well,
I think a lot of it is hedging bets for
one thing. You kind of have to do that a
little bit. In the league, there's also, and don't discount

(01:10:09):
this at all, there is some semblance of they have
to perform for their fans as well. And I know
that we always say winning takes care of everything and
the fans kind of come in later. But when you
think about with those fans have put up with for
so many years yet still continue to support it a
level that frankly, they probably don't deserve, you know, And
I'm just being frank about the whole thing. If my

(01:10:31):
job performance was like that over the past twenty years.
Number one, I wouldn't have a job, and number two,
I don't think anybody be supporting me. But these Browns
fans are, I mean, they're fantastic. So you've got to
let them know that you're you're trying to do something
with this roster, and all these moves aren't simply cosmetic.
You know, Barkley, Listen, you get Carlos Hides. You can

(01:10:51):
still draft Barkley, you bring Tyrod Taylor in. Yes, you
can still draft the quarterback because you've got the bridge
in a backup however you want to look at it.
You can do all of these things. But you've got
to you've got to remake this roster. And you've got
to take this draft that's coming up and make it
like last year's draft and turn it into productive players.
Because when you look back at last year, the first

(01:11:13):
three players they took, all of them gave them production
last year. They just have to learn how to win games.
That's the biggest thing that's a Browns team that you know,
the roster was good enough last year to win a
lot more games. Obviously zero was was not optimal STUF,
but but that roster. That roster was good enough to
win five six seven games last year five five six games,

(01:11:36):
and they just don't know how to close anything out.
They don't know how to win. I think that they're
in the stage of of like most people who haven't
done something well for a long time, when crunch time
hits brother they exists, expect the roof to fall in,
and typically it does. So I think you should put
that on your business cards. Charles Davis better at his
job than the Browns are at football. Well, look, I

(01:11:58):
don't know that I am, but I'm just saying. I'm
just saying if I if I had a twenty year
run of utility, Well here here's my thing. I don't
I don't think you and I would be talking right now, okay,
and so so so I think you'd be like, let's see,
who should we have on today, Well, Charles Davis has
had a twenty year run of futility. I don't think

(01:12:19):
we're gonna dial that number. In fact, lose that number.
So again, I don't know that I've had a twenty
year run of absolute success either. That's in the eye
have to beholder. But fortunately enough, I'm not in John
Dorsey's shoes were wins and losses. I get judged by
you know or whoever that that graveyard of gms and
head coaches has been, because you know, last year is

(01:12:40):
funny and we're all talking about it's not an original
thought at the vikings a few times last year and
late in the year when it looked like Pat Shermer
could get a job, and what happy I was teasing Pat, like,
you know something, there should be a statue of you
outside of Brown Stadium. You want nine games as a
head coach, and he just kind of gave me that
look like, you know, oh, I want to laugh, but

(01:13:02):
I can't because in the position I'm in, I gotta
show some dignity. But I'm sure he walked out of
the room was like, yeah, there should be a statue
of me there. For God's six they can't win any games.
But anyway, here's my thing, though, Charles, is that, Okay,
you get I get the hedge in your bets part,
and most teams have to do that. But you're picking
number one in the draft, so you know we're gonna
take a quarterback. And in in the real world, number

(01:13:26):
one picks play and they have to play they should.
I'm with you. I am so tired of when they
pick a guy number one and tell me, well, we're
gonna you know, we're gonna let him develop and let
him sit for a while. I just scream every time
I hear that, because you're lying to me. All right,
you're lying to me because you're not going to do that.
You tell me you are, you say you are, and

(01:13:47):
it's gonna last four games, Max, And you know what
I always say at the end of the year, that
was four games you wasted of development by not playing him. Um,
let's go back to Blake Bortle's rookie year with Jacksonville.
We're gonna play you at any No, you're not. And
they lasted what three or four games? Yeah, so why, um,

(01:14:08):
we're gonna start Tom Savage. The lasted one half one half.
So I would say to Bill O'Brien, and then, you know,
I think I get along very well with Bill. He'd
probably like Charles, if you don't just shut the heck up,
But like Bill, really one half? So what so what
did you miss? What did you miss in the preceding

(01:14:29):
six weeks? What what are we missing here? One half?
That tells you what you needed to know about Tom
Savage if you decided he was your guy, and in
one half you said, well, he's definitely not my guy.
What were we doing in training camp? Is that a
legit question? Yeah? Well, and and even and even further
than that, Charles, is that if if you want to

(01:14:51):
sign a bridge quarterback to take snaps, to help mentor
whoever you take number one for the next few months.
I get that. I understand you want to do. You
gotta have somebody that comes in, somebody, somebody's gotta be
a backup. But but you can You can sign a
J mccaren for one year and seven million. You don't
have to trade a third round pick for Tyrod Taylor
and pay him sixteen million dollars and say, here's a

(01:15:12):
third round pick that would have been a starting player
for us that we gave away just to have Tyrod
Taylor for a month. You know something, I have a
hard time arguing with that logic. But something tells me
that come Draft night, that Thursday night in Arlington, Texas,
and so you know, you see what I did there.
I like that. I like what you did. I heard you.
Arlington's very nice, Thank you, very much I've learned. I've

(01:15:35):
been flogged enough. Okay, when you get it wrong, it
gets ugly. Let let me tell you, Charles, where the
draft is, and I'll get you into it. It is
not in Dallas, okay. But if it but that that
Thursday night it picks one and four, if they remain
where they are, we might get an answer to what
is going on right now. We might get the next answer,

(01:15:57):
That's all I'm saying. I don't know that that to
be true, but we might get that next answer. We
shall see. And Look, quarterbacks don't typically play sixteen games,
and running back don't typically play sixteen games. So the
so the better off you are both positions where you
have people who can step in. You know, we get
spoiled by those guys who take all the snaps for
the truth that matters you and I both know that

(01:16:19):
just doesn't happen very often. All right, Ce need to
get away from the Browns in the early part of
the draft for a second. Where a little bit into
day two of free agency, what's the move of the
couple moves you like the most so far? Look, there's
there's a little hidden move in there that I like
a lot in. That's Western Richberg the center going from
the Giants to Forts, because that you know, look, you're

(01:16:40):
gonna make all these moves for Garoppolo, right, we center
in on and helping him with perimeter players and running
backs in the whole deal. You better people can block
for him too, Right, So they got listed getting rich
Berg in there at the pivot. I would imagine Killbore
would go to a guard. Now they're gonna find out
the kid out of Stanford they surprisedly drafted in the

(01:17:00):
first round two years ago. He's got to be ready
to go. Was that m Garnette? So so he's got
to be ready to play this year. They've got to
figure that out because who do you have to beat
in your division? The Rams? And what do the Rams do?
Oh they have Aaron Donald's rockers that just beat you
up inside. Well, to win your division, you better be

(01:17:21):
able to block those guys. So that's one of those
smaller moves that I like a bunch um, you know,
some of the bigger moves. I'm still laughing about the
idea that Drew Brees would be anywhere but New Orleans.
I was, I was like, why is it? Why are
we even printing talking discussing the idea that he will
be anywhere else. What are you crazy at his stage

(01:17:41):
of his career, with the year they had last year
where he has hope alive again, a defense that can play,
he wasn't going anywhere. So I was, you know, I'm
sure teams like, hey, gotta take the shout. Okay, I
get that, But for us to even think about, yeah,
well you know he might go with no, he's not okay.
The Dolphins are intrigued to me for this reason. To me,

(01:18:03):
their moves starting with JGI last year, have told me
that Stephen Ross, the owner, is all in with Adam
Gayze as his head coach because these are moved that Gates,
I would guarantee, has pushed for to have that culture
change in the locker room. And look at who's gone
a g I remember his first game of Adam Gaze's career,
they played at Seattle. Do you remember what happened with

(01:18:25):
JGI that weekend? Got left home attitude right out of
the gate. Now he got it together and had a
monster year, But let the very next year is right
back to that chirping behind the scenes again. And I
was like, I don't want to put up with this. Well,
j I found a place, kept him happy, won a
super Bowl. That's great for him and Dominican Sue hadn't

(01:18:46):
exactly been the easiest ride ever. Right that he was
turned in the corner last year, said he was becoming
more of a mentor and less of a guy who
was stand offish, et cetera. Obviously that hasn't fully kicked
in because they're letting him go. And he had in
Jarvis Landry. You heard that. You heard all the bubbles
and the bumps and bruises there. And Jarvis Landrys, a
guy who not who should not be average in nine

(01:19:06):
yards to catch because every time I do a game
that defense is playing him was like he's a running
back when he catches the ball, you ever want to
try and tackle him? Well, those guys should average more
than nine yards to catch. Well, he was ready to
go as well. I'm sure things were rocky there. So
those were some of the moves that I thought were
interesting outside of the normal stuff. Look Kirk Cousins, I
thought he and his agent played that like like like

(01:19:28):
a strata various man. They told us all they were
gonna take a tour didn't they. Well, if you're telling
everybody you're gonna take a tour, but this is the
first place you're going and they want you, what ends
up happening? You get a guaranteed, fully guaranteed contract because
they don't want to let you out of the building.
Great move on their part. Minnesota fully guarantees the contract,

(01:19:49):
gets the guy that they want, and guess what, they're
not touring anymore, are they. I thought that was a
fantastic move by Kirk Cousins and his people to put
that out there. Hey, we're gonna check out a few
places in Minnesota's life, but we want you to be first. Okay,
we'll be first, but we're still gonna go a few
other places. Oh no, you're not wham. But what's it
gonna take for me not to go? How about a
fully guaranteed deal? How many of those are in the league?

(01:20:12):
Not many? You can fall on Twitter at CFD twenty two.
That CFD twenty two, Charles Davis NFL on Fox Analysts,
twenty years of excellence in the business for Charles Davis.
That is funny to put that on my tomb so hey,
you're put it on your Twitter account excellence in the business.

(01:20:33):
It doesn't have to be true. It doesn't have to
be true, right now, whatever you say, people will believe it,
that's all. It didn't have to be true. Hey, it's
great chatting with you again. Man, There it goes Charles Davis.
Great stuff from him, speaking of Kirk Cousins. Coming up next.
Something I said yesterday on this show was gonna happen,
and it was gonna revolutionize pro football. And it happened

(01:20:56):
about a half hour after I said it. What was it?
You'll find out next and Patrick Show, Jason Smith and
for Dan, Doug Gottlieb on the Way, Fox Sports Rade,

(01:21:23):
Fox Sports Radio and Joel our technical director, is the
winner of the Doug Gottlieb Pool. What time Doug Gottlieb
would arrive at work today after getting a flat tire
on his car on the freeway. Joel had seven forty five.
At seven forty seven, Doug Gottlieb has walked into the
studio after reconnecting with a long lost basketball friend who

(01:21:48):
came to help get his car back on the road.
We talked to you all morning. Your car had broken down.
He ran over a piece of debris on the freeway
and you got a flat tire and damaged my car.
I'm pissed. But the guy who came to fix your
car you played basketball with twenty five years ago, Reggie Bell.
He's a legend. Apparently, yes, apparently I played played ball

(01:22:10):
with him. Okay, so here's the question. Do you tip
a guy it's a free roadside assistance because the car
that I purchased you typic guy, Oh yeah, you have
to And you say I did. I did, And you
say yeah, just like I passed you the ball and
the streets all those years ago. Let me help you
out with another dime and you give them tense Here's
here's the thing. And I'm and I'm I don't know

(01:22:30):
what kind of tipp rime. I'm not a generous tipper.
I'm not a cheap tipper. I just try like I
don't feel the need to tip to my because they
brought my food out on time from the kitchen right
like about right. I looked at my wallet and all
I had was hundreds in my wallet. Serious first world
problems with no no, no, no, no, I don't I

(01:22:52):
never have cash and for whatever reason there's we had.
What do you Jimmer say driving around. All I have
is all this money that I had. My dollar bills.
I don't even remember when I got them because I
never spend. I'm just having not cash. I'm like, put
on the card. Whatever. Guy, um and so, like Reggie
bill Ball probably thinks I'm the greatest tipper in the

(01:23:13):
history of tipping. Now bucks, Yeah, wow, that's a really
good time. I'm supposed to go. Here's a tip. Can
I have a fifty back? It's it's six in the morning.
You got changed, you got nine. I'm gonna get you
stuck at yesterday? You four twenties? Yeah, honey. You know.

(01:23:38):
One time I had a guy who did roadside assistance
for me, and I had no money in my wallet,
and I was near a La Salsa. So I went
to La Sausa, had my card and so I got
him a Salsa gift card. I was like, great card,
So get him a gift card and sent here. I
don't have any money, I don't have any cash, but
I got a La Salsa gift card and I hand
him the uh, I hand him the gift card, you know,
and they put it in a nice little envelope there.
So I had him the gift card. He drives away.

(01:23:59):
I get in my car driveway and I see something
shining on the ground. I looked down and go, oh,
it's the gift card. It fell out of the thing.
So the guy drove away, and now I didn't even
have the gift card. But you have to. Let's also
it's a great, great case it he is, And have
a moment for a quick Tom Breden story. You do. Yeah,
we're at we're doing the game at doing a game
at Memphis is like again like seven eight years ago,

(01:24:20):
and we're going to Rendezvous. It's a famous rib place
in Memphis. Here have been no It's amazing, dry rub ribs.
It's incredible. This is as good as the what was it,
the Optimist Prime place you talked about last night. Uh,
it's different. It's different. Kane Prime in nash is like
arguably one of the two or three nicest restaurants in
Nashville steak places. This is like the best ribs. This

(01:24:42):
is the synonymous with Ribs in Memphis is the dry
rub Ribs at Rendezvous. So but you have to like
just like an alley you have to park in to
go into Rendezvous, which is down to a big restaurant.
So we get out and there's a guy. I was like, yo, man,
can I you got you got some you got any
spare change whatever? And uh, Tom Brennon is you know,
goes right to his wallet and like all he has

(01:25:04):
is like a dollar and he gives the guy a dollar.
And the guys like, man, a dollar, You gi me
a dollar. So Tom Brendon is a former coach at
Vermont of course they beat Syracuse from and he snatches
a dollar back, give me that bag. You don't you
don't you don't want a dollar? Fine, I'll take it.
I'll keep it. We walked in the restaurant and he

(01:25:25):
took it back from the guy. Did the guy get
mad after No, No, because he's I'm like, I don't
know if he's mad or whatever. I was laughing. I
was laughing too hard to even Rember Crook Hall any
other part of the conversation, because the guy was asking,
you know, asking for money, anything you can do to
help me out. And he literally went into his wallet
and open it up, and you know, he's gotta ki
stands a wallet with a bunch of receipts and and
has a one dollar bill and he gives him. He

(01:25:46):
literally give him his last dollar and the guy was like, man,
a dollar? Are you kidding me? Like, give me that bat.
It's The Roadside Assistant Show with Jason Smith and Doug
Gollary NFL Free Agency. Next, why use it it? I
can't beat some woman in the bracket ship, the one scenes,
the eight Seeds, the play in Cinderella's and Favorites Alive.

(01:26:09):
I hate my bracket. Speaking of favorites, I had Dan's favorite.
I've heard that? Did you know? You can hear any
of your favorite Dan Patrick moments on The Dan Patrick Show. Up.
Let's hit the way back machine. You can also hear
upsets or things that make people upsets. We set them
on old subject and I've got enough. I don't really
can't talk to you anymore. But to listen to the
plaver simply by downloading the Dan Patrick Show app and

(01:26:32):
the iTunes store or Google Play. Speaking of well curated content,
the new Dan Patrick Show app curated by No Way.
Welcome to the Dan Patrick Show. Dayton knows how to
party as tournament teams fly about the count rate? What

(01:26:55):
do you do on the road? So too, Just Dan
and the Dan That's it was impactful. Well, they lie
to Los Angeles Jason Smith that Doug Gottley sit in
I don't care what it makes me. You bring that
guy in here. Broadcasting from the l A Mercedes AMG Studios.
They're very cheap. Here's Jason Smith and Doug Godley final

(01:27:17):
hour of the show. It is the Dan Patrick Show.
Jason Smith from The Jason Smith Show, her nights here
on Fox Sports Radio eight to eleven Pacific. Doug gottlieb
his show twelve to three everyday Pacific and apparently a
guy who only carries hundred dollar bills in his wallet.
As he mentioned a few minutes, I really I tipped
the guy a hundred dollars a day because that's all
I had in my law. I was like, man, I

(01:27:38):
feel like the greatest guy ever. And then I was like, man,
I could really use that hundred dollars. You know, here's
the thing, though, how did you only have hundreds? Because
like that, that's like, you know, that's like what I expect,
like you know, from from a big you know, college
basketball star, you know, for college football star. All I
got hundreds of one because that's what I get after
I shake hands with people, I don't remember. We had
um my wife and I had just there's like a

(01:28:00):
couple of hundreds from office from the A t M.
I honestly don't remember. It's been It's why your A
t M is so high and it only gives you
hundreds that I honestly I don't recall. I just remember
that she had a hundred or maybe two hundred and
I had a hundred two hundred. Like again, neither of
us ever carry cash. And where when I just came up,

(01:28:20):
I was in I think I've had him since I
was in New York. I usually get money when I'm
gonna go on I was, I was in New York
covering the Big Ten Tournament. I've had it in my
wallet that long. And I and what I do is
you get a couple, like a couple hundred dollars before
you gonna go on a long trip because you gotta
tip everybody, right, like by dollars? How much you guy
brings up your car at a valet? Like what do

(01:28:42):
you what's the proper what's the proper amount? No more
than five dollars for a valet? But like if you
give him a dollar, is that it's got to be
if it's less than five, you got to give at
least three dollars between three and five dollars. Who establishes
these rules? Like why is you know? Like the worst
part is when your car somebody a dollar? Well, what
about what your car is parked? Like right there? Like

(01:29:03):
literally I can walk, I gotta go get it, like no, no,
Mr Galley will bring it around to you, like you
don't have to, Like it's actually hotel policy. We're bringing
around to you. So they basically get in your car
and sit in your car, which you don't want something
else sitting in your car, and they loop it around
and then they and then they park your car like
that's not a dollar word, that's you gotta be more
than a dollar. It's kind of insulted. So the point is, look,

(01:29:23):
Tom Brennan insulted a guy by giving him a dollar.
Told the story a couple of minutes, Like that's a
great point. So I think I had two or three
hundred dollars or something. Might have had three hundred dollars
when I went to New York and I still had
two hundred dollars in my wallet and I just had
never put it back in our like little safe spot.
All right, now, Reggie Bell's got first. I took that

(01:29:44):
gallive in the post twenty five years ago, and now
I got a hundred dollars. Yeah, we got people. People
in my social media account on Reggie and Reggie Buckets.
Reggie Buckets scores forty in a one on one game
when they played a fifteen. Reggie Buckets is starting to
gain some traction here on Twitter. Reggie bell Is is
quickly becoming the guy who Steve Alford passed on and
they could have won last night in the first four,

(01:30:06):
losing an embarrassing fashion to Saint Bonaventre. Check it out
on Twitter. At Fox Sports Radio, we are periscope in
the next few minutes here on the show. So go
to the Fox Sports Radio Twitter account. I'm the one
where in my best Jefferson Airplane t shirt Dougs the
guy with a hundred dollar bills coming out of his
pockets you can see just falling out. He stands up, hunter, like,
come on, god, we only got a hundred in there. Tip.

(01:30:28):
No matter people know who you are. It's like, I
don't get a hundred dollars everywhere you go. Now, it's
gonna be a hundred dollars. Are we are we set
now as to who's where? Like it feels like yesterday
was an unbelievable I can't remember had this happened before
a free agency day like that in nash Football League.
This kind of whole day is has been crazy. And
we started out with a big day today too. Well,

(01:30:49):
you know, while you were getting your tire fixed, of
forty Niners, get Jack McKinnon. Carlos Hide goes to the Browns.
The Browns trown talking about running backs. They are easily replaced.
Keep going. Yeah, Now A J. Mccaren has a contract
offer from the Patriots. As the Patriots purge continues, Nate
Solder is going to head to the Giants. They also

(01:31:09):
already lost Dean Lewis yesterday. Malcolm Butler left the day
ago sixty one million dollars. So now the great Patriots
purge players leaving that they'd like to resign. Maybe not
Malcolm Butler because Bill Belichick completely bift the Super Bowl
with him, but other guys that are big parts of
this team. And Tom Brady is gonna not like that,
but he's gonna losing his left tackle. Dion Lewis is

(01:31:31):
an incredibly valuable player, but now a J McCarron could
be the next Jimmy Garoppolo. Uh well, why why do
you assume he butchered the Super Bowl? Because if you
have Malcolm Butler and you don't play him and your
defensive backs are getting worked by Nick Foles, he was
good enough to play nine student that he's not a

(01:31:54):
good enough football player. He's good enough to play the snaps.
But now you mentioned for the Super Bowl. Okay, he
does something so bad, I get it. But he was
active for the Super Bowl, so it couldn't have been
that bad. It could have been that bad that he
wasn't actively played a couple of snaps on special teams.
So it was so bad because Bill Belichick's done that.
I'm gonna bench you. And this is because you're not
doing things the right. I get that, But it could

(01:32:16):
have been that bad because he was on the active
roster and then he doesn't play and you don't put
him in. You're trying to win the bleep in Super
Bowl and whatever point you're trying to prove. Some of
that's got to go out the window because he's got
to get in the game and stop Nick Foles. From
going up and down the field on you and throwing
for three and seventy yards. Well, there's there's a couple
different levels to it. Uh. First would be in terms

(01:32:37):
of deactivating a player the day of the Super Bowl.
I don't know in terms of numbers, what they what
they would have had to active to, how they would
have been able to activate somebody else they had, anybody else,
you know, at at the super Bowl in Minneapolis, I
could have replaced him. That's that's the first thing. In
terms of just sheer numbers of the forties six they're
actually playing in the day of the day of the game. Um,

(01:32:58):
but by my estimate, shouldn't Bill Belichick. This is who
Bill Belichick has always been and who he will always be,
and every story we hear about it is who he
wants to run. This is how he intends to command
the Patriots ship as long even if he rides it
off into the sunset or crashes it into the harbor.
The idea is, Okay, maybe I lost that game because

(01:33:19):
I was unwilling to play Malcolm Butler, but maybe that
is what's going to allow me to get to other
Super Bowls with inferior talent. Either you do your job
and do it the way we're supposed to. And there's
people who have gone back and said, hey, look at
the Tennessee game. He was you know, the reason Tennessee
scored was Malcolm Butler and that and that though his
rating was high for his career, he was not having

(01:33:42):
a good finished the year. And even by Malcolm Butler's
own estimation and the idea that we're sitting there going well,
because he got paid they should have played him. Because
he got paid by the Tennessee Titans, they should have
played him. Like that's that's a very interesting point A
to point B. Look what Bill Belichick did was bold.
It probably wasn't the smartest thing in terms of your personnel,

(01:34:05):
but it's the Patriot way. It's the way they've been successful.
And oh yeah, by the way, in spite of the
fact that Nick Foles lit them up, they still had
the ball with Tom Brady. Tom Brady had the football
with a chance to march down the field and win
the game, and they missed. They missed, they missed a
field goal on an extra point. Things that never happened
with Stephen gustcast Ever, like all of those things considered

(01:34:26):
a lot of things. The Philadelphia Eagles had to run
a trick play, which was actually an illegal formation in
order to beat them, so a lot of things still
had to work against them in order to lose that game.
Bill Belichick was wrong because you're looking at the result,
not the process. I actually think the process was the
way in which he wants to purport himself and how
he's been able to get to eight Super Bowls. All right,

(01:34:48):
let let me throw this out. You talked about forty
six guys. There are forty six guys on that team
in the whole organization that is trying to win the
Super Bowl. And the day of the Super Bowl you decide,
you know what, I have to prove a point here, Well,
how bad of transgression wasn't Well, he's still gonna be
on the active roster and play special teams. But when
we can use his help to help us win the
super Bowl, I'm not gonna put him in because that's

(01:35:08):
not the Patriots way. If you're on that team and
this is your chance to win us to whether it's
your fifth super Bowl or your first one, how do
you feel about that? You're pretty pissed. You're pretty pissed. Well,
but who you pissed that. You pissed at Malcolm Butler,
You pissed at Bill Belis because obviously Malcolm Butler didn't
do anything that anybody's been on a sports team knows,

(01:35:29):
you do something wrong and you have to watch your
teammates run. We would we would have found out by
now if Malcolm Butler did something that was that was
that bad, we would have found out by now. Why
because we find everything out. You think Malcolm, you think
Malcolm Butler, you didn't know. We didn't know about all
this stuff. We didn't know about all the airon Hernandez
stuff until he off somebody, right, We didn't know about

(01:35:50):
any of the other stuff. Yeah, but this is this
is on the field football stuff. This is this is
something that you're gonna see. Hey, Malcolm Butler isn't active,
he's not playing the super I don't understand why that's
if that's investigating questions or asked and talked about. If
people dive into it and look into it, we would
have found somebody would have said something. Somebody with the
Patriots would have said, you know what, Yeah, you know,
Malcolm went to a content which was that erroneous report

(01:36:11):
you first he went to a concert, was late, and no,
I never went to the concert. And we didn't hear
anything else about that story. We would have found that's
something we would have found. He did he did something,
or a series of the likelihood is there's a series
of things, right like, remember, wasn't playing well, I didn't,
wasn't on the team plane what you know, didn't didn't

(01:36:31):
work out the first like day or two when he
was there, and then there was probably something else, like
it's never just one thing, it's a thousand little cuts anyway.
It is interesting though, the pieces that are leaving the
New England Patriots that Nate Soldiers gone. Dion Lewis is
really really effective. But it feels like there'll be another
Dion Lewis. There's always been another. It's James White, or
it's somebody else like you they no one is as

(01:36:54):
good on the transaction wire as Bill Belichick and the
New England Patriots have been. And maybe there's an eric
into it. Maybe maybe they're getting full of themselves that
we can do whatever we want. But you know what,
they keep winning, They keep winning, and there's and until
until further notice, you still believe that they'll find a

(01:37:14):
way to figure it out, to find a left tackle,
to find another running back. And the second I saw
Jordy Nelson was released, I was like, white guy, really,
you know, tremendous worker, a guy who uh probably lost
a bit of a step since he tore his a
c L didn't they didn't want to pay nine million
dollars in Green Bay, like he's gonna be new Patriots,

(01:37:35):
Like you just you just feel like that's going to happen.
I don't know, I think he's too tall. See, they
got like they like the Hamburglers six to Yeah. No,
but I mean like Amondola and they all those Welker
now they like all the small guys though they can
kind of run around and linebackers don't see him like
the Hamburglers, right, No, never never, never, never like the
Hamburgers all running around out there. But the idea that

(01:37:55):
the players are mad, like like Aaron Rodgers is probably
upset that they cut Jordan Elsen. He'd liked to tweet about.
He'd like to tweet about, you know, why are you
signed this guy when you had Jordy Nelson? So yeah,
players get mad, but their players, they their opinions don't
really matter that much. What's it? So there their their
opinions winning the Super what they could have won and

(01:38:16):
they didn't because Belichick that they don't have a right
to be upset. Their opinions don't matter. Yeah, they have
a right to be upset, but they also have a
right to be upset in Malcolm Butler, would you do man?
Like I said, we would have found out? What? What
did he? I don't think. I don't think we would
have found out. I think there's lots of things we
still don't know. I think we know a lot more now,
or we find out a lot more because of because
dudes are stupid on Instagram and Snapchat and all kinds

(01:38:38):
of other social media. But yeah, I think some of
them are probably mad at Belichick. I think some of
them are probably mad at Malcolm Butler. And then I
think some of them are just like, hey, you know what,
we still should have made some plays, still shouldn't won
the game. But this, this was such a supple last
year without without Rob Gronkowski because he was hurt, right,
But this, this was such a big story. This wasn't
an under the radar thing like Aaron Hernan is what
you know, some people in the know knew what was

(01:38:59):
going on. He was having a bad lifestyle, and he
was that kind of guy. This was front page news. Yes,
I think now we will find out because now he
signed a contract with another team. And I think the
Patriots they didn't want to play him, but they didn't
want to do him dirty by outing whatever he had
done so that he couldn't get his next contract. I
think that's actually the most professional thing that they could
have done. I'm sure we'll find out here in the

(01:39:19):
coming weeks. I look at this and I go, you know,
the biggest mistake of Belichick's coaching career is going to
wind up being this. And you look back and say, okay,
what's the biggest mistake of before this? It was going
forward on fourth down against the Colts. But that's a
regular season game from his own twenty three yard line.
That's what he does again, That's that, But that's that's
actually the exact same thing. This is who Bilichick, Bill
Belichick has been. Yeah, right, this is who he's been.

(01:39:42):
He's the same one who got rid of Randy Moss.
He's the same one who you know last year he
got rid of Jamie Collins he probably needed. Truth is
he probably could have used Jamie Collins either against the
Eagles because they have no they had no pass rushers,
or he could have used him last year against Atlanta
when they're getting run out of the building. Right, if
you really want to get down to the worst mistaking
made by my estimation, not letting Seattle score. Now, Seattle

(01:40:05):
scooted up not handing handing it to Marshawn Lynch and
and Malcolm Butler reading a play in which they have
prepared for and getting an interception. But the truth is
that if you if you go back and watch the
Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks, like they should have
let Seattle score to get Tom Brady and football back,
they didn't, and they just lucked out to the to
the fact that Seattle didn't hand the ball the marsha

(01:40:25):
Unlynch The Dan Patrick Show here on Fox Sports Radio,
Jason Smith, Doug Gottlieb in for Dan Twitter at how
about a Fresca Doug at Gottlieb Show. So the Patriots
purge continues, Malcolm Butler has gone as we just said,
of course, Nate Solder agreeing to a contract with the
with the New York Giants Coming up next. We got
some n c A hoops on your way. We have

(01:40:46):
an n I T story that Doug has been foaming
at the mouth to tell ever since he gave Reggie
Bell a hundred dollar bill. We got that coming up next,
to will preview Arizona State Syracuse and more on NFL
free Agency, to Dan Patrick Show right here sports something
because it's Fox Sports Radio, The Dan Patrick Show. Jason Smith,

(01:41:11):
Doug Gottlieb in for Dan. Can hear my show nights
eight to eleven right here on Fox Sports Radio. Pacific
time Doug is twelve to three Pacific. You got to
want speak for yourself today even from there. Uh. We
we have a new podcast on the Colin Calherd The
Herd Podcast Networks sitting to launch called All Ball, a

(01:41:32):
basketball college pro All Ball. So I believe will be
recording our first All Ball podcast after this show and
then at some point coffee and at some point I
gotta figure out I canna get my car fi. Yeah.
You know, you know there's people who are very concerned
that your hundred dollar tip of Reggie Bell, uh, your

(01:41:53):
former basketball friend that you played with twenty five years ago.
Who helped get your tire fixed and back on the
road this morning, that he is now ineligible for the
n c A Tournament because you gave him a Crisp
Wonder dollar Bell. But if Reggie Bell was on a
team playing in the n I T, he would play
unlike Jemezie met To. Crazy story tonight. Jemezie met To

(01:42:13):
will not play for USC in the n I T
and the end Field making the announcement earlier today because
he wants to avoid pre NBA Draft injuries. The quote
he has made personal decision not to participate in the
n I T as a precautionary measure to eliminate the
risk of injury leading up to the NBA Draft. This

(01:42:35):
decision did not come as a surprise, as Enfield actually
allowed for the possibility he wasn't gonna play on Monday. Now,
this we normally see. It's a late day phenomenon in
college football with guys get bowl games. We don't want
to get hurt. But this is the first time you've
seen in the n c A Tournament and actually in

(01:42:55):
the n c A in the n I T you're
seeing this now for the first time. I get it
because it's the n I t I can't imagine a
player sitting out in the n c A tournament. No,
nobody's gonna sit out the end. Look, look, if you
can't understand the difference between basketball and football, and I
don't think any player, even Christian McCaffrey, should sit out
of a bowl game, the Christian McCaffrey. And and you

(01:43:16):
can tell me that the Stanford guys were cool with it,
but you mean to tell me for two years, everything
we do, everything we run, is based upon having Christian
McCaffrey and then our last game together, even like you
know that my future is more important than everybody else.
I don't like that. That's not being a good teammate.
That's not what the whole thing is supposed to be about.
Something we supposed to learn. But whatever, it's football, I
do at least appreciate that at the running back position,

(01:43:36):
you just you got a limited tread life. You just
do and you know any hit could be your last. Like,
are we really getting into this with Chemezi met too
and injuries in basketball? Is that? Is that really the
discussion we're having? The the number of career and we
saw Gordon Hayward break his leg in half in a
terrible injury right to start the year. Truth is, he

(01:43:58):
could probably play at the end of the season. Like,
medical technology is amazing, So the idea of a career
ending injury is we're we're taking like a completely old
school approach to There aren't many career ning injuries and
the number of injuries are slim. Secondly, with basketball, you
play basketball every Guys that aren't playing in a basketball
game play basketball every day. Now. Guys don't play as

(01:44:22):
much five on five pickup as they used to do
in preparation for the NBA draft in the off season,
but they still play. There's still contact, There's still the
chance of coming down wrong and landing and blowing at
your knee. It's it's still there, but I'd be I'd
be embarrassed to beat him as he met to It's
it's it's got to be embarrassing to me that the
school stood by you when you know he was I
believe one of the guys mentioned in the most recent

(01:44:45):
part of this investigation on Yahoo. His name was in
a ledger. You know, you get into a school like USC,
which has an unbelievable alumni base, caused seventy grand. It's
hard to get into. It's seventy grand a year, uh
to to go to school there. And okay, you don't
make the nc Germany, you still got a chance to
play with um Jordan McLaughlin, your point guard who has
been a four year started, a tremendous player like one

(01:45:06):
last go round, and potentially play in Madisonal Score Garden.
By the way, you dope, you would have played in
front of all the NBA scouts at Madison Square Garden
in the n I t it's a really really good field.
Instead you're like, nah, I don't want to play for
fear of getting hurt. And in basketball, we actually care.
How much you care, how much you love the sport.
And this to me says, I love the sport. I

(01:45:28):
love me, I love the chance of making money for me,
But I love the sport because if you did, you
play five games. Five games, that's it, five games and
a chance to play Madison Square Garden. If this this
is the problem with us in the media is and
I don't know what where your where? You sigh? But
what we Okay, So now there are people who want
to pay the players, okay, and I mean all we're

(01:45:51):
doing is we're creating just this entitled generation of Hey,
I'm entitled to this and I'm entitled that. No. Yeah,
by the way, when when the games don't matter to me,
I don't want to play, like what what? Like that?
That's not the whole idea of sport. And by the way,
the idea of why you got a scholarship to attend
a prestigious university like USC makes no sense to me.

(01:46:13):
Do you think he thinks, like, well, the n I
T it's the second rate tournament. Like maybe the facilities
aren't great, Like there's nails coming up out of the
boards on the court and playing at home, playing the
Gallen Center. When I moved to Madison Square Garden, you know,
maybe it's not gonna be there's like weeds coming up
through I understand. Like the n I T was on
last night. And by the way, Middle Tennessee looked incredible.

(01:46:34):
H Oklahoma State, my old mona end up, end up
when this is great news for Oklahoma stake because us
he's the one seed in their side of the Brackett
and without him, as he meant to remember, Benny Boat
writes out for the year with injury um who's their
other star who was probably gonna leave and go to
the NBA. But I don't think he'll be drafted or
be late second because he dissocated his decap. He left

(01:46:55):
scoring and rebounding this year he was there. He was
their top guy who I believe met to yes goor
he met she has become a really good play He's
a he's a freak athlete, shop blocker, rim protector who
can shoot the ball not to three. Yeah, he'll play
in the NBA. Probably not h it depends who goes,
but I mean he'll play. I think he'll play in

(01:47:15):
the NBA. Um, he's He's not as athletically gifted as
Jordan Bell, but there's that type of presidence he has
defensively athletically, and he's actually probably more developed offensively at
this point of his career than Jordan Bell, the Oregon
Duck who was drafted and play for the Golden State
Warriors when he's healthy. What about Reggie Bell? Is he is?
He is clinic. He's definitely not as athletic on a

(01:47:37):
football field as REGGI, but um, look it is it
is not the NA tournament. But like look all these
if you grew up playing basketball. You played tournament every weekend,
every you played all the time. Now they play a
multiple tournaments, three four games in a day, you know,
And so the fact that it's not the n A
Tournament is a bummer. And usc by my estimation would

(01:48:00):
have been in But when somebody says you're not as
good as you think you are, you finished second in
the back twelve, like, I don't know. My makeup as
a competitor is f you. We're gonna get together, we're
gonna win three games, and then we're gonna go to
Madison's Sir Garden and we win two games, and we
win a title and will be one of two teams
that win our last game, and we'll prove to everybody

(01:48:20):
that we were good enough. Whether or not it proves
that you should have been included the tournament or not
doesn't really matter. That's the makeup of a competitor. And
that's what I think is missing. And we're taking away
from if it to the people are like, well, yeah,
I totally understand that getting ready for the NBA. The
problem that getting ready for the NBA draft is he's
going to work out anyway, not supervised by trainers and

(01:48:41):
by head coaches. He's going to work out with his
workout guy, he's gonna play pick up all anyway. The
chance of injury is as great or greater in those situations,
and so we're giving him past and bail on his teammates.
Don't love it? Is this gonna be something? Because now
we we saw it happen. What once it started happening
in college football was a very big deal. Wha, we
got a couple of players skipp and now it's okay.

(01:49:02):
Now it's almost a regular thing where we get one
or two big players, potentially running backs each year saying
I'm skipping my bowl game and this is just how
it's gonna be, and we're gonna see that happen. Would
we see more of this? We've seen this would not.
Louisville's players apparently didn't want to play in the n
I T, and then somebody made a decision playing in
the n I T, right and uh so, and they

(01:49:25):
and they won any they won less night anyway. Um so,
and we've seen the year before I got to Oklahoma State,
they had played in the n I T two years
before and then they were they could have gone to
the n I T and the guys are like they
were so embarrassed by being in the n I T
for a second straight year, they decided, we don't want
to go to the n I T. So that has
happened before. But if the team decides to play, you play.

(01:49:46):
That's what it means to be a part of a team,
and so we do. I think we'll see more of this.
I don't. I think he's gonna get roasted pretty good.
And I just don't. I think there's a limited number
of kids who could actually make this argument. Jam As
he met too, I guess is one that could make
the arc. I mean, and he could say, hey, I
saw any boat rights knee pop out earlier this year.
I don't want that to be me should be told
it's the second time any boat rights knees popped out. Um.

(01:50:10):
But I think it will be very very limited as
opposed to college football, where there's a bunch of bowl games,
and I think we've created this narrative where it's okay
to skip book bowl game that doesn't matter. The problem
with that argument is okay, so tell me when it's
things stop mattering to you. Right in college football, if
you're only competing for a national championship or for a
big time Bowl game. So after you lose your third game,

(01:50:33):
you're out. So when is it okay to shut it
down now? Because then you can say, well, that game
didn't really matter. I don't want to playing that game
does I don't want to play against samth Houston State.
I don't play against the meaningless games. Those don't matter.
I only want to play in the games that matter.
You're you're you're not gonna see a guy skip a
playoff game. But look, bowl games, how much do they
really matter when it comes to the stakes for next

(01:50:55):
season moving on? If you're playing in the playoffs, you'll
never see a guy skip a playoff game that because
that would be suddenly now your character is in question.
It's instead of just like you you want to win
a championship. Do you want to win? Yes, But if
you're thinking about yourself, you realize that that the NFL
and evaluators are gonna go, boy, how much do they
really care? I don't know if they're skipping this game

(01:51:15):
and this is a big deal, are they gonna you know,
when we get to the Super Bowl, you're gonna be
Cam Newton to make a business decision and not jump
on the football and we're gonna lose the Super Bowl
because you decide not to do that. But in another game,
I I really don't have that much of a problem
with it because if you've given a team three plus
years and here's a game, you look, coaches love the
bowl games because they love the practices because there's a look,
we get another whole month of practice for next year.

(01:51:37):
Would it be nice to win the Fiesta Bowl if
it's not a playoff game, We're nice to win the
Cotton Bowls out of playoff games. Sure would be nice
to win. But if we lose, it's something that hey,
we got there. We were a Cotton Bowl team last year,
and it's it's like saying we were a Final four team. No,
we didn't win, but you say, hey, we've had a
big achievement. You know, you also don't want to get embarrassed. Obviously,
the jail and Smith injury, uh in the I think
that was in that was in the Fiesta Bowl, right

(01:51:58):
was uh? But with Notre Dame taking on Ohio State
and that that's the type of devastating injury and he
had nerve damage. I know he came back and played
and played that times pretty well for the Dallas Cowboys.
That's that's the one that makes you hold your breath
and go like, hold on now, maybe you shouldn't be
playing playing a bowl game that doesn't decide a championship.
On the other hand, look, you're part of a team

(01:52:21):
and the team is playing a game. And the idea
that you are bigger than the team, or that your
future is bigger than the team, that to me is
not what it's about. I wouldn't let my son do it.
I wouldn't do it, and I'd be embarrassed with I
his chips as he met too, that this story came
out that I don't want to do it. I do.
I I understand a little bit more in football, the
problem with the this bowl game doesn't matter. There's a

(01:52:42):
there's a there's an easy way to do it. For me.
If I was Christian McCaffrey, I would have gone and say, hey, look,
I'm gonna try and work out, but let me play
a couple of series and then get and then get me.
I'll play hard for a couple of seasons. Let me
just get out of there, and I'm sure David child
had been. That's that's that's fine, It's totally reasonable. I
think you make a mockery of the game. And and
it also I'm I am sure sure there are teammates

(01:53:04):
are like, are you kid me? Kid me? Like all
we do is for like Forezi meant to USC's offense.
The whole thing is designed around screen roll him running
to the rim because Jorge McLoughlin's great, a great pastors
a point guard, and the whole thing is designed around that.
If you don't, if you help on that, everybody else
gets shots. If you don't, he gets a dunk. So
now you get to the ant Like you know what, guys,

(01:53:26):
I know we built this whole thing around what I
can do. But I'm gonna sit this one out. That
just that just sucks. That does not strike me as
somebody I my Some of my best friends in life
were the ones I played with in college both Notre
Dame in Oaklhoma State, and the friends that I have
wouldn't bail on me because they didn't they felt like
their future was more important than our team winning a game.

(01:53:47):
And Reggie Bell wouldn't bail on Reggie Bell when we
ran the court every day at Miles Scare Park, joining
us now the Hotline. More on this. Fresh from Oklahoma practice,
they get ready for their first round game. Is end
Basketball insider Jeff Goodman, Jeff jump in here on the
on the met two thing not playing in the n
I t doesn't want to jeopardize his pro prospects. Where

(01:54:07):
are you on this? I mean, I don't like it.
I don't like it as a fan, but I totally
understand it as a player. I mean, again, are you
going to put yourself at risk for what they feel
is a meaningless game? Which it is a meaningless game,
But you have played with your your teammates all the
way through and now it's kind of like you're abandoning
them to some degree, and when you want to finish

(01:54:30):
your career on a high note with these guys that
you've practiced with, played with every day. So I understand
both sides of it, um And ultimately, obviously there's some
agent telling him not to play right which which by which,
by the way, that's it's a great point you bring up, Jeff.
It's one of the issues that I had Larry Scott
on my show yesterday and like, well, why can't you
get the advice of an agent, because this is what

(01:54:52):
agents will advise you to do. You play well and
you sit it out. That's what they do with pre
draft workouts. Guy has a good work count, or a
guy goes to the NBA draft combine plays well for
a half and all of a sudden he's like, ah,
you know, I got a little hamstringth thing. They shut
him down. I understand that we operate in Larry Scott
and others operating the world where agents are only going

(01:55:13):
to advise you with the best intentions to the heart,
But the reality of it is there's an agent telling
him to shut it down. Absolutely, no agents are gonna
be in the best interests of themselves, not necessarily the kids.
Sometimes it's the kids, but but often it's going to
be for themselves and protecting UH, their product, their investment.

(01:55:33):
Um U c l A loses last night to St. Bonadventure,
and I think both of us, if we've got to
know Mark Schmidt, he's a tremendous guy. That's a huge
win for the Bonnies. But I heard Jason t like,
look U c l A. People have never loved Steve Alford.
They just they've never been able to wrap their arms
around Steve Alford. How safe is he Without Alonzo Ball?

(01:55:55):
Last year, he'd be gone. We know that. I mean
that that certainly saved him and might save him and
give him another year. I think he's okay for another year.
But again, like you said, the fan base has never
taken to him. I said it when he got hired.
I said, listen, it's gonna be hard not to be
successful at u c l A because of all the
young talent that was coming in. All you've got to

(01:56:16):
do is get a portion of it and you're fine.
And in fact, really usc you can make a case
has gotten as much, if not more overall talent out
of the area than U c l A has, other
than Aaron Holiday. And like I like Thomas Welch, I
mean he's a good player, really good player, But like
how much talent was on the u c l A team,
like not a ton, not a ton and the guys

(01:56:36):
they lost from from the succession earlier this year, they
weren't gonna be huge impact guys. Cody Riley could have
helped this year, but he wasn't a game changer either.
Uh andle Angelo Ball, we all know it. Wasn't a
game changer. So yeah, I think Steve Alford certainly on
the hot seat going into next year. Absolutely ESPN Basketball
inside of Jeff Goodman with us as he reports from

(01:56:58):
the Midwest Bracket as he was just detending Oklahoma's practice
in Pittsburgh. Certainly one of the more controversial selections. But
you have the biggest superstar in the game and Trey Young,
what are you expecting out of them? You know, I'm
happy he's in. I mean, selfishly, I think we all are,
just because again, while his stock fell off and the
team didn't play great, uh, and that's probably putting it

(01:57:20):
mildly over the last six weeks or so, we still
want to see Trey Young because he is capable for going,
you know, going for forty exploding. I don't think they're
gonna beat you, r I because your eyes, what are
they They're They're tough. They've got a ton of guards
they can rotate on Trey Young, physical, some veteran guards.
So I think it's gonna be difficult for Trey Young,

(01:57:42):
uh to get going and and and be efficient. And
that's what he's got to be ultimately, right, I mean,
he's got to be efficient shooting the basketball, creating for
his teammates. But again, I'm happy. This is the reason
I'm here for the most part is uh, it's Oklahoma
Rhode Island and and it's gonna be a good second
round matchup against probably Duke, and then the other one

(01:58:03):
will probably be Building OVA against either Colin Sexton of
Alabama or Virginia tax. So Pittsburgh to me, was the
easy pick. I was lucky to be able to pick
where I wanted to go, and this was easy for me.
Jeff Goodman from ESPN joining US, um, Yeah, like, look,
if you don't cover the balls, you gotta cover. You
gotta cover Tray young you you you only cover the
only cover the big stuff. They had weird chemistry, and

(01:58:27):
I'll use the word weird as the as the nicest
way of you know it. It just became too much,
and I think many people are blaming ESPN, And I
don't know how you blame ESPN for covering a kid
who's leading the country and scoring and assists as a
freshman and they're beating everybody and he's shooting it from
near half court like he deserved the coverage that he got,
but they didn't handle it well, and then when they

(01:58:47):
started to play poorly, now a sudden, the veterans like,
you know, I want the ball, he's not playing hard. Um.
I look, you can't glean a lot from practice. But
had they fixed any of those chemistry issues based upon
what you've been able to see? I mean, they're joking
around their loose but who Isn't you know these aren't practices,
They're they're glorified shoot arounds in front of fans. So

(01:59:09):
everybody's smiling on the Oklahoma Sooner's team right now because
they're just happy for a fresh start, a new season,
a chance to play in the NC Double Tournament. Um,
but I'm with you. Listen, I'll tell you what. I
kind of told ESPN to start promoting Trey Young even
earlier than we did. I wanted to get on the
bandwagon two weeks earlier than they started really pushing it.

(01:59:30):
But but you got to I mean, listen, college basketball
needs stars, and Trey Young was a superstar for probably
a two month stretch this year that we really hadn't
seen in a while. And yeah, does he have his flaws, absolutely,
But but you gotta admit, Doug, I mean, Trey Young
is fun to watch in a sense that he can
drill it from deep. He's got great court vision that

(01:59:52):
I think a lot of us really underrated that had
seen us seeing him playing a U basketball and he
can he can make play years better around him. So
I think there's not a lot of guys that have
all that. Like Colin Sexton. He's flashy, he's a great score,
he's got a different gear, but he doesn't make people better.
Nobody can guard somebody too, So I actually, I mean,

(02:00:14):
I think he's a better prospect, but regardless of which
you mentioned, doesn't guard anybody. But but does he really
guard anybody? You and he wont he actually called maybe
maybe he can guard somebody? Wears Trey Young physically cannot
guard anybody, and then both have freshman defensive lapses. You
mentioned Rhode Islands there, Um, Danny Hurley obviously has done

(02:00:35):
an incredible job with that program. There are several jobs
in the Eastern Seaboard that you would think would call
it Danny Hurley. One is Pittsburgh, the other is Yukon.
If you were a betting man, where's Danny Hurley coach
next year? Uh? In stores? I think he goes to Yukon.
At the end of the day, it's funny because you know,
they're playing in Pittsburgh here, so I had their like
the idea Pittsburgh doesn't have to go anywhere to try

(02:00:58):
to recruit her. I but I think at the end
of the day, it's hard to turn down Yukon, even
though it's in the American Athletic Conference, because it is
the only program two have won four national titles in
the last twenty years. Danny Hurley knows that well, being
the Northeast guy. Uh, so I think he ends up
going there. And then Pittsburgh kind of scrambles at this point.

(02:01:19):
And and oh, by the way, like Georgia, they've offered
the job to that Mona. I'm not sure by any
means that tad Mota is gonna take this Georgia job, because,
as I was told weeks ago, sad Mota is still
he's enjoying life away from basketball right now. He's getting
healthy both physically and mentally. He's not gonna jump back

(02:01:40):
in just to jump back in. So the coaching carousel, well,
it hasn't had a bunch of big time names yet.
It's gonna be intriguing because I want to see does
Tom Cream get back in and if he does, wear
he can fall on Twitter at Goodman, ESPN, at Goodman ESPN,
Jeff Goodman, ESPN Basketball Inside are covering the Midwest Region
Oklahoma's game against Rhode Island. Great stuff, Jeff as always man,

(02:02:03):
thanks so much. Alright, great stuff there from Jeff Goodman
covering You know, the funny thing, as you talked about
Pitt or Yukon, it's like the stunning fall of Pitt basketball.
I mean, Levant's survive in Levance feels like it was,
you know, thirty years ago instead of just you know,
five or six years ago. Well you have and and
I think Yukon's is different, but there's some similarities there.

(02:02:26):
The Conference realignment has left several in you know, several
programs in its wake. Memphis who might actually fire Tubby
at the end of they were yesterday, they're supposed to
be a meeting was pushed back to today. There's something
thing like the Conference realignment has killed absolutely killed Yukon
and killed Memphis and hurt several other programs, Pitt being

(02:02:48):
one of them. Now, Pitt also had a coaching change.
They didn't like Jamie Dixon, but they didn't like the
Kevin Stalin's higher and then Kevin Stellen's had a roster
that was front loaded with a bunch of seniors. They
lost him, and he's playing a bunch of freshmen and
you're playing in the a s C where you don't
have the ties with the exception of Syracuse to the
rest of the a c C and the a CECS.
You know, I don't think there's any question along with

(02:03:09):
the Big Ten, that's the that's the hardest conference to
break into because the quality of coaches and the investment
of the programs into basketball, like that's a crazy difficult.
So it's the conference realignment has played as big a
factor as the actual coaches and their own coaching flaws
and the players as much as anything. But Dan Patrick
showed Fox Sports Radio, Jason Smith, Doug gottlieb In for Dan.

(02:03:30):
Coming up next, we got the Browns making more moves
today and making a big statement that's breaking just a
few minutes ago. We'll have that for you coming up next,
Dan Patrick Show, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Radio, The

(02:03:52):
Dan Patrick Show, Jason Smith, Doug gottlieb In for Dan.
My show heard nights here on Fox Sports Radio eight
to eleven Pacific, Doug, of course, twelve to three right
here on Fox. A day that's been filled with twists
and turns in NFL free agency, college basketball, driving the
freeway on the way to work, the legend of Reggie Bell,

(02:04:12):
and now we have the Browns who apparently are always
going to brown. Earlier today, as day two of NFL
free agency gets off to a pretty big start, you look, obviously,
star players signed yesterday. We saw Jerick McKinnon today go
to the forty Niners. Carlos Hide jumps to the Browns,
has agreed to sign their fifteen million dollars three year deal,
six million guaranteed in year one. The Browns start running

(02:04:36):
back money. Yes, that is starting running back money right.
Sources close to the Browns are reporting that just because
they signed Carlos Hide does not mean they have ruled
out Sae Kwon Barkley at number one. Quote. Nobody is
ruled out, the source said of how the Browns view
the draft board, so many things here, Doug. Look, I

(02:04:57):
talked earlier today and talked about why would you trad
the third round pick four Tyrod Taylor give him sixteen
million if you're gonna take a quarterback at number one. Okay,
So now the fact they did that tells me they're
gonna take say Kwon Barkley. But now they signed Carlos Hyde,
who is a guy who at the least is gonna
what split the load. Let's say Kwan Barkley if you
take him. So now your number one overall pick is

(02:05:18):
gonna be a guy who's gonna play half the time
with Carlos Hyde. I I don't I get the hedging
your bets part of it, but when you're picking number one,
you know who you want. When I hear the Browns
say nobody's off the board, you gotta know who you
want at this point. I mean you really do you know?
I know you want to do pro days and everything,
but you gotta know. Okay, here's our shortlist. This is
what we want to do at number one, and this
is where we'd like to go at number four. The

(02:05:39):
truth is you shouldn't take a running back at number one,
right you just the position has been devalued. Case in point,
that's starting running back money, right, six million dollars? What
does it say? I mean, we look around the league
and we know enough. Third fourth round picks. We know
enough teams that do it by committee to know it
can be done. And tell me the team that has
the one running back that has been able to win.

(02:06:02):
When's the last one running back team to win a
Super Bowl? Um? You know they all kind of do
it by committee, and you spread your money around. I
think the bigger question to me is, all right, so
they're not off the board, doesn't mean they're gonna take him.
I still think it leaves the quadrant for the Browns
is they probably shouldn't take a quarterback at number one overall, right,

(02:06:24):
because you feel obligated to play a guy at number
one overall, but because they passed on so many quarterbacks
the past couple of years, they feel obligated to take
quarterback number one overall. But the good news is that
if they take quarterback one overall now with Tyrod Taylor,
they don't have to play him. And um and and
two of the three possible top quarterbacks off the board

(02:06:48):
are guys that you should absolutely consider red shooting Sam
Donald and Josh Allen Rosen not nearly as much because
he's much more polished. But I don't think they like Rosen,
And I think there's far too many questions about Rosen
to take him number one over all. So this to
me says that that that Donald or maybe Josh Allen
are much more uh much more likely to be taken

(02:07:08):
if they're not going to trade out of that number
one spot, if they stay there. See that that's the
that's the thing about drafting number one. Number one overall
picks have to play. And you can sit whether it's
Donald or Rose out. You can sit a number one
guy for about a month. You can go through the
whole preseason and say, listen, here's our quarterback and here's
Tyrod Taylor, and we're bringing them along. But when you
get a month into the season and you're owing four,

(02:07:30):
you're one in three, it's there's too much pressure from fans,
from media, from success inside your own team to play
that guy. Why are you? Why are you postponing the future?
If Sam Donald's going to be your future, then let
him get out there. But he's not because but but
you because he's not ready. And how do you know
if he's not ready if you don't put him out there?
Because because that's your job. As look a look at

(02:07:51):
John Dorsey comes and he comes from Kansas City, okay,
and Pat Mahomes was awesome in the preseason, but it's
the preseason and there are people like, hey, you know,
Alex Smith is good. Alex Smith goes out, has the
best year of his career, and then they trade him away.
And I guarantee that's what John Dorsey is thinking. So
many just like players follow coaches. You know, Starlett Wherever

(02:08:13):
who went to UM Buffalo, right, he follows just like
stars followed their coach to Buffalo or to where wherever
they are UM front office people, coaches follow a philosophy
of a place that they've been. And when you come
from a place in Kansas City where you draft the
heir apparent, but you stay vigilant and you don't play
him to week seventeen the season, I'm I'm guessing that's

(02:08:34):
what John Dorsey is thinking. When they take whether they
take Josh Allen or Sam Donald or they take Baker
Mayfield at four, I'm I guarantee they're sitting there thinking,
we're gonna let this guy become a pro. Because if
you look at the Cleveland Brown rookie quarterbacks that have
failed recently, Menzel, Brady Quinn, even Brandon Wheedon. All of

(02:08:55):
them have played in the first year. And this is
Dorsey saying we're gonna do it a different way. If
there's a difference between go number one overall and going
number ten, number number twenty, it's just that's just how
it's gonna go. But Jared Goff played too early, failed coach,
got fired. Get a second year now of a sudden,
he's much better. Jason Smith, Doug Gottlie been for Dan Patrick,
Dan and the Dan that's back tomorrow. This is Fox
