(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to Tuesday's podcast.
We got a lot to get to. Philip Rivers, Indie
cam Newton stuff, Kevin Durant news not the good kind.
We continue to reaction. Wait to hear what Charlie Weiss
had to say about the DeAndre Hopkins trade. Just wait,

(00:42):
but first let me give you my thoughts on Tom
Brady leaving New England. Boom, What Up America? Doug gott
Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to you from sunny
when swept southern California rain overnight and now it sprinkling
in some areas, but the sun is cutting through as

(01:06):
we continue. Many of you, many of us, a matter
of fact, all of us are on some level on
quarantine as we try this social distancing thing, which of
course is the weird part about the news of the day. Look,
there's other stuff that's happened. Stefon Diggs traded overnight, DeAndre
Hopkins traded yesterday. Cam Newton uh said being told, hey,

(01:29):
you can go and find a trade a partner or
anywhere you want, Kimy was the way I didn't want
to be traded, Like, no, no, you want to be traded. No,
I don't want to be traded. No, you want to
be traded. It's a former league m v P. There's
a lot of Philip Rivers. Appears to be the imminent
signing of Philip Rivers in Indie. We told you that
would happen, Teddy Bridgewater, we were the first to tell
you that made a bunch of sense, right. The Brady thing,

(01:52):
I'll admit I have just had a tough time wrapping
my head around the fact that Brady would leave New
England because it's he's ever known. It's always ever known.
You know, when you get when you get in a
relationship as kids, you become adults, you have this fear
of the unknown. Man. I always sleep on this side

(02:14):
of the bed. No, I always on that side of
the bed. It's just there's something you've always done your
whole life. But of course that there is. Not all
marriages make it the distance, you know, not all end
up in that uh in that was that E D
commercial where they're in separate bathtubs watching the sunset with
a glass of wine in between them. It's kind of
weird and there being the same tub. Maybe that's why

(02:36):
he's got eady anyway, And what used to be endearing
about the other person? Now, where's you out right? You know,
it used to be great that Belichick didn't care and
would cut guys and would move on in a second
and keep making the team get better and knew more

(02:57):
about what was right for the team and stead of
what fans thought or what players thought. Now it's kind
of annoying to Brady. It used to be, man, I
love playing football in the snow. It looks cool, it
feels cool. You feel like, you know, some somebody from
three hundred the movie, like a barbarian and now you're

(03:18):
a savage and they're like, you know, it's actually cooler,
warm weather every day at practice instead of practicing in
a bubble, practicing outside that sounds cool. I don't have
to double glove up, I don't have to worry about
the football is being in uh, deflated because of the
air temperature outside. If the temperature is perfect outside every day.

(03:42):
And we saw signs from the Patriots thirty two point
three million in cows based ten million to Dev McCourt,
mccordy fourteen point seven eight one million to Joe Thuney,
Matt Slater Matthew Slater two point eight five million, and
Adam Butler three point two six million. Jermaine Uh, how
do you say his last name? ALLUMINOI two point one

(04:05):
one two point one three three million. There just wasn't
any money to go out and spend to go get
other dudes. Now you see Stefon Digs and DeAndre Hopkins,
two superstar wide receivers go elsewhere, and you're like, this
is what happens with relationships when they go bad. Is
everybody's in there state. You get to your relationships cycle
if you will, right and belichick cycle is do what's

(04:27):
smart for the team, save money, get as many assets
as possible, do what it takes to win every day
in the off season, do what it takes to win
every day in the regular season. Just whatever it takes.
The name on the back of the jersey doesn't matter.
They're all replaceable. It's all about how much money you
make and how you fit into the grand pyramid of
what we're building. Brady's you know, Brady's agenda is too Yeah,

(04:52):
he wants to keep winning, but you know, can't we
go out and get some spend a little bit extra
money here? Can we have a little bit more fun
and look at this thing? Is it? They stayed together
two years extra because Garoppolo was going to replace him,
that was part of the plan. They're ready to move on,
and then the owner comes in. It's like, now, Brady's

(05:14):
my guy. You guys stayed together for the kids, if
you will, right, well, the kids are gone, Garoppolos I
means Garoppolo's gone. He was, he was a replacement. Um
Gronks retired, you know, like everybody's kind of moved. And
that's and that's why it's it's it's done, and and

(05:35):
the these signs have been out there, and many, like myself,
have been unwilling to accept it because it's hard, right,
it's hard. If it's all you've ever known, it's very difficult.
But in many ways it's necessary to know what else
is out there to feel what it's like, like I
would even think we all think that Brady has to

(05:57):
go somewhere and when to make his point. I don't
necessarily think that, And I don't think that Belichick has
to win a Super Bowl to make his point. Sometimes
you just gotta feel alive. Sometimes you just have to
try new things. Sometimes you just have to understand and
like go somewhere where people you know, you can say
they respect you. But there's a whole different sort of

(06:18):
feeling to being recruited, if you will, from Tampa and
from the chart like the Chargers. It it legitimizes an
entire franchise. They think about that. Think what the Chargers
have been through in terms of the change in their
football lives. Right, they moved from San Diego into some
crappy stadium, right, I mean, like, look, I like going

(06:41):
and watching a game, uh at whatever. They change the
name too, but you know, basically it's where the l
A Galaxy soccer team plates at thirty it's not even
thirty thousand seats, and they couldn't even sell it out
with their own fans. You know, they went to some
tweener house and they're waiting and now like now we're
moving into a legit house. Now we've been through all
this mess. We we we got divorced from Philip Rivers

(07:05):
and now we're ready and our lives are creeping up
and we just we need something to legitimize that this
was the right decision in Tom Brady doing that? Does
it for the Charges? Think about that for a second,
and that would feel really good for Tom Brady. It's
not that he's not respected in New England's not that
they don't look at the six rings. And even his
coach who's bidding him, Adu, calls him the greatest quarterback

(07:26):
of all time. Now that doesn't mean that that was
a bad run, but there's there's something about the feeling
of somebody else really really wanted you laughing at all
of your jokes, because there really is the first time
they've heard him. The haven't hear him for twenty years,
marveling at your play right, same think of Tampa, like

(07:49):
Tampa hadn't made the playoffs in twelve years? That right,
we think of Tampa's Gruden won a Super Bowl and
and um, and they were close before that. But the
truth is that Tampa has been kind of like the Chargers,
kind of laughing stock franchise. You know, they just have
and you hire Bruce Arians and you get all these players,

(08:10):
You're like, okay, and Tampa has a Super Bowl coming,
and Tampa is one of these weird, kind of sneaky
cool cities. Like I know, we watched the videos of
Clearwater Beach, and for people who don't haven't been to Tampa,
clear Water Beach is basically Tampa, Like Tampa Bay is
the bay, and there's Tampa, which is the city, and

(08:30):
you go over bridge and you're you're in clear Water,
like it's all the same area. And as much as
we could sit there and go like I can't believe
they're doing with the social distancing all these people at
the beach. On the other hand, it was eighty degrees,
you'd probably be down the beach too, Like I'm I'm
I'm not saying I would I would do it, but
I'm saying I understand. But Tampa has always been this

(08:52):
kind of what happens in Tampa. It's like the gateway
to the redneck rivieria. It's the other side of Florida, right,
It's more the South than South beaches. South beaches almost
like South America. It will legitimize an entire region. Tom
Brady and Giselle bunched and chose us, and that's why

(09:16):
Bruce arians was brought in. That's why they're recruiting him.
That's and for Brady, I like, I understand all these things.
I've heard Caliherd say. You know, Brady wanted New England
to make any moves. Brady want to New England to
do things that New England doesn't do. They don't change
for anybody. This is who they are. It's worked for them.
If you don't like it, it's cool, We'll move on.

(09:38):
You'll move on. That's the way they've rolled. This is
a grand experiment because obviously this is a completely different,
you know, level of a guy moving on from a
defensive end to a Randy Moss wide receiver to a
running back and a Corey Dillon to pick the guy
who they've gotten who has eventually moved on to a

(09:58):
Nate Soldier going to the New York Giants, and all
those guys have had one year and then fallen off
the map. For the most part, none of them been quarterbacks.
Belichick and the Patriots aren't dumb. They've had the best
run for any organization in sports in the last two decades.
They've made these moves not because not because of feelings,

(10:20):
but because of facts. Brady is, by their estimation, probably
a little bit over the hill. They're not in a
position to go out and rework their offense to being
some juggernaut to carry him, and the fact that he
can't carry them anymore doesn't really work for them. He's
not all in on the way they do business, and
they're not all in on where he is. And so
what's best is you write a couple of love letters
about each other, about the good times and shake hands,

(10:43):
or in this case, you elbow bump because it's coronavirus
fears and you better do. Is it sad? Yeah, yeah,
it's it's sad. Breakups are sad. It's all how you
look at it. If you look at it the nine
Super and six Super Bowl wins, and the fact that
he's a six round pick, and how he got the
job and how he kept the job, and the fact

(11:04):
that they didn't win a Super Bowl for ten years,
and two of the two or three of those years
there's actually the best team he ever played on. But
he tore up his knee, and you know right after
one super Bowl. I mean it's a it's crazy, the
longevity of success they've had. If you want to look
at the negative and the fact that belichick one ended
two years ago and maybe they would have prolonged their
success longer, or the fact that Brady doesn't finish his career,

(11:27):
you can. It's gonna depend upon your perspective. But not
all relationships were meant to make it. That doesn't mean
that the next marriage won't work. And there is something
about being desired by somebody who sees you, gets you,
understands you, like Tampa and the Chargers think they do,

(11:52):
whereas Brady is in his cycle of mistrust of of
Belichick and not understanding why Belichick won't hear him, won't
give him more money, won't give him more weapons, and
Belichick's doing with Belichick's always done. Not care about the
individual player, care about the greater good of the team.
Just keep building and working and finding a way to
make smart decisions that are pertinent for the football team

(12:13):
to win as many games as possible. That's who they
are and as they've grown for the last twenty years,
they've grown apart eight seven, seven, nine nine one Foxes
the phone number Tom Brady won't be a Patriots weird thing.
But as I explained to my son this morning, Joe
Montana didn't end forty Peyton Manning didn't end the Colt

(12:36):
red Fire ended with the Minnesota Vikings right after going
to the Jets. People forget he was with on the Jets.
Uh uh. Johnny United has ended up with the Chargers.
Jerry Rice ended up with the Seahawks, believe or dot Seahawks.
But I mean, you just go through quarterbacks at Philip
Rivers gonna end up with the Colts. Drew Brees synonymous

(12:56):
of the Saints. Remember he was a Charger back in
the day. The the the ending of relationship and the
divorce is no longer the exception. It's not the rule,
but it's not the exception. Two things you should be
aware of when it comes to Cam Newton where he'll
play and what it tells you about his ability to

(13:17):
be a star or maybe a starter in the NFL.
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio ah
app So I don't know if do we do we
find sound, we find to take somewhere. Guys. Um, I
know where you guys are. We stripped down crew, No, no, Ramas,

(13:38):
that does not mean stripped down. But put your clothes, John,
put your clothes back on. A stripped down crew means
that we're not having interns and some of the editors
aren't here. So Ryan Music is working on multiple shows.
John Ramos, who's awesome. Of course, Dan fire that that's
our crew here on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Um, Ryan, you and I spoke earlier this morning.

(13:59):
Remember when when the Bridgewater to the Panthers stuff came out.
All I need is a witness. I did say a
long time ago when they hired Joe Brady, don't be
surprised if Bridgewater goes to the Panthers. Correct, That is
absolutely correct. Okay, And and my logic has always been,
you need a rabbi in the room. You need somebody
who knows the language you're speaking. And Joe Brady is

(14:19):
bringing his offense from L s U and he can't
get Joe Burrow. So a guy who was in New
Orleans for the last couple of years knows and thinks
the same offense, and he's worked with work with him
some before. Is Tady Bridgewater. He's out in the market
three years, twenty million dollars average per season, and the
Panthers say they've given Cam Newton permission to seek a trade.
Cam Newton disputed away. This went down on his I

(14:41):
G page. He said, stop with the word play. I
never asked for it. There's no dodging this one. I
love the Panthers to death and we'll always love you. Guys.
Please do not try and play me or manipulate the
narrative and act like I wanted this. You forced me
into this love. So here's my thing, okay. Uh. The

(15:03):
reason that Colin Kaepernick couldn't find a home in the
first year and a half that he was out of
the sport was because the only place that he had
a friendly home was with the Baltimore Ravens. Right. You
had John Harbaugh, Jim Harboy played for, and then they
had Greg Roman who was his offensive coordinator, And that

(15:26):
was going to happen before they drafted Lamar Jackson, when
Joe Flacco was a mess and not a bad back.
That was gonna happen if not for his girlfriend posting
some memes on I G. What's gonna happen? And the
reason there's a myriad of reasons it hasn't happened since,

(15:47):
but a big reason like you're not going to teach
a thirty year old, thirty two year old to be
a starter in a completely new offense like that. You
have to have somebody who's been there seeing you have
success and you have a good reworking relationship. That that's
the way it works generally, especially in a position like quarterback.
I mean, heck, you even here, Greg Olsen nearly went

(16:09):
to the Bills. Why because the Bills are made up
of for former Carolina Panthers guys. He nearly went to
the Redskins. Why they made up of forda Carolina Panthers guys.
Now you end up with the Seahawks, which is a
different system. But you know we're we're talking about like
Trent Williams. Why would Trent Williams be traded to the
to the Cleveland Browns. One thing, the left tackle, but

(16:31):
to Bill Callahan's form position coach or his offensive line
coach is now in Cleveland, right, there has to be
a rabbi in the room and Joe Brady being there.
So here's the question with Cam Newton. If the Panthers
who have had him have his greatest success and paid
him all this money and only owe him nineteen million
dollars for this season, if they don't want him, Okay,

(16:54):
you chalk it up to regime change. Sorr. It's for
Jeam change and the Panthers just want to come in,
clear house, clean house, and we got Bridgewater will know
this system. It's not huge money. He's probably been paying
starter money this year and then my guess is it's
not twenty million dollars strictly guaranteed the next three years.

(17:15):
There's probably some wiggle room. And even if it is,
if you draft a rookie quarterback next year, you can
slot him behind Bridgewater and then by year three he
takes over from Bridgewater. Is a highly paid backup or
your jettison him. That's the thinking. If Cam Newton isn't
if the Carolina Panthers don't, excuse me, if the Washington

(17:36):
Redskins don't come after Cam Newton, why should anybody else?
What do you think about this? It's one thing for
the Carolina Panthers, but Carolina passing on him should be
a bit of a red flag, right, A bit of
a red flag, but a complete red flag is that
the Washington Redskins, who no one believes they have that

(17:59):
they know exactly what they have with Dayne Haskins at quarterback.
They wouldn't have to give up a ton to get him.
Ron Rivera has worked with him before. You know, I mean,
you you go through who would he be working with
if he went to the Washington Redskins. Who would be
his his guys? You know well, I mean, look it's

(18:24):
it's he was. Scott Turner is the offensive coordinator. Scott
Turner was with the Carolina Panthers two years ago. He
was the Carolina Panthers quarterback coach. If the Carolina Panthers
quarterback coach and the Carolina Panthers former head coach who
has pretty much autonomous control over the Washington Redskins, and

(18:47):
the Redskins need a quarterback and he doesn't cost a
ton of money, and they pass after Carolina who has
said before like he's our quarterback. They pass that a
red flags galore. I mean, this is a former league
VP who I believe is overhyped because you really only
had one great year in the NFL. But he there,

(19:08):
his eyes been trump winner, didnt win a national championship.
There is a lot to Cam Newton is a big
old body. I don't think he's nearly the runner that
you think he is. Though he has always had an
arm He's had arm injuries and issues, and he's never
been accurate. I have my misgivings. But if the Washington
Redskins don't make a call for a trade, no one
else in the NFL should try and make a trade

(19:30):
for him as a starter. They have their former quarterback coach,
they have their former coach. No one knows if Cam
Newton can play better than those two guys. And if
they say thanks but no thanks when they need a quarterback,
that that's a red flag, a major red flag. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. Thanks Dan,

(19:52):
Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, where do you
think by or where do you think Cam Newton plays
next to here? I mean they've been talking of Chicago,
but with Bridge Bridgewater, Chicago might make some sense, but
in Chicago is kind of a one read offense. But
you need to be able to move. But I just
nobody knows how well he's gonna move when he goes back. Yeah,
there are very there are very few options I think

(20:14):
to go out there and start. I still thought, and
I don't know all the numbers, dug. So I apologize
in something naive. But when you mentioned the Redskins earlier, Um,
I asked somebody about that, I think like a week
or two ago, and I was just saying, like, does
that seem too easy? And they were saying, no, it's
not really a fit for what the you know, what
the Redskins want to do. But there was at least

(20:35):
familiarity obviously with those connections. So, UM, I don't think
it's I don't think it's when people say it's not
a fit. You know that that's that's the it's not you,
it's me. That's what that is. That's the it's not you,
it's me. It's not you, it's me. It's not a
fit like you're just together in Carolina. I mean, it's

(20:55):
not a fit. It's not you, it's it's me. It's me.
It's something I'm going through. I just look at like,
if if you're a head coach and you come in
and whether you like Dwayne Haskins or don't like Dwayne Haskins,
you do know what you know, and you in your
mind you would say, Okay, did I have what I
had in Carolina? Is that better than what we would
have right now? And I think that would be the
decision on weighing in on, you know, if you would

(21:18):
bring him in or not. I don't think he knows
what he has or if you know. I don't think
if if he knew, if he knew and liked what
he had, I don't think they would interview quarterbacks and
done the old due diligence. Yeah, and that's why I
think that it could be a possibility. But they're just there,
aren't There aren't a lot of spots, and I just
think I keep going back to Washington, So I'll just
put it on the Redskins. It's very very interesting. Gotlip

(21:39):
show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um Ryan says, the
Skins already on the hook for at a quarterback spot.
I get it. I mean, like look for for the Redskins.
The big challenges them is gonna be are we gonna
tell Alex Smith to retire? Right? Are we? Gonna tell
Alex because they're like, I mean, they're they're screwed with
the Alex Smith thing. Sorry, he's probably never gonna play

(22:01):
football again. And even if he retires, there's still a
cap hit in the year in which he retires. There's
there's not a lot a lot you can do there.
And if you're Cam Newton, like here has always been
my issue with Cam Newton is Cam Newton needs to
be willing to play for less to go and say
like like I got enough money, I just want to

(22:22):
play and better myself. But that's not the kind of
guy he is now. I don't I think Carolina wants
to move on. There's probably a bunch of reasons they
want to move on. Style of play they just isn't
doesn't fit. I mean, I just think about Joe Brady.
If Joe Brady's coming in and he's he wants his
offense to mirror that of the New Orleans Saints, what
about the way that Cam Newton plays makes you think

(22:43):
of Drew Brees. Nothing. They could not be more dissimilar
as players, decision makers and quarterbacks. And they've tried in
in in Carolina to make him into more of a
true dropback pastor that's why they brought nor Turner in
but one. He couldn't stay healthy long enough, and when
he was healthy, it wasn't always effective. It was it

(23:04):
was hit and miss. And it's not that I don't
have questions about north Turner when or not his style
the play action, you know, more traditional style of quarterback
will work, although play actions way up in the NFL.
I do wonder if it, if it ever worked with Newton,
if they ever liked that arrangement. And the more you
read about it, the more you try and understand. If

(23:26):
Caroline didn't want him, the Redskins don't don't want him,
why should I want him to be my starter, to
be a backup? I think it'd be great. The problem
with Cam Newton being a backup is does he buy
into the idea of being a backup, Because being a
backup is about being ready and motivated to being the starter,
but also about preparing the starter for his week. Brian
Billix a Super Bowl champion head coach. Of course, he

(23:48):
joins us here in the Doug Gottlieb Show care of
ex tech shoulder pads. Brian, the news of the day
is Tom Brady will no longer be a Patriot. What's
your reaction, Well, it is always a tough one when
you're talking about the goat and the success that he
and Belichick in New England Patriot had in unprecedented territory
twenty years with the same team. Hard to imagine Tom

(24:11):
Brady in the other uniform. But that's the way of
the NFL right now. Clearly New England recognizing and this
is gonna This was the challenge for signing Brady is
that it's not like you can amortize it over a
long contract where signs him is going to have to
take a hit eat, whether it's one year, two years,
three years in New England, making the determination that you

(24:31):
don't know, we're just that's not that's not gonna work
for us. You know, an adage in the NFL you
cannot pay for past performance. You can only pay for
anticipated performance going forward. And that's not to say that
Tom Brady won't continue to play brilliantly, but as much
as they'd love to keep him there, you can't pay
just because of the emotional attachment that he has to

(24:52):
New England. And clearly you can see why they made
the decision. They did. Was it the right decision? Well,
we'll find out what are we because at the end
of the day, it's then the unasked question is Okay,
if not tom Brady, then who And what's the step
they take now? Are they truly regrouping? They haven't had
to do this for twenty years because they have always

(25:13):
been able to begin with Tom Brady. Uh, And they
may very well and I don't know this just conjecture
from the outside, but they may very well be going.
You know what, we got a lot more regrouping to do,
more than than tom Brady. To put on tom Brady
what we have in the past, we might not be
able to do that. We truly have to kind of
reshuffle this deck a little bit. And that's not fair

(25:34):
to tom Brady because they've asked a lot of that him,
of that that of him for a long long time.
So you know, we'll we'll have to see. Uh. In
terms of the next question is okay, where do they go?
Do they go? One of these veteran quarterbacks and there's
a lot of them out there because they think they
are good enough to kind of hold onto the division
and get into the playoffs and see where New England

(25:55):
always goes or are they going to maybe draft one
of these young quarterbacks? Wreaking now saying Okay, we're going
to draft one of these young guys. Can truly reshuffle
the deck. Doug Gotli show on Fox Sports Trader that
that's the voice of Brian Billick, one of Super Bowl
is head coach with the Baltimore Ravens. Of course, long
time analysts with the NFL network kind of have to
spend some time this year on Fox Sports Radio as
Tom Brady has announced that he's no longer going to

(26:17):
be a Patriot, um Tampa or the Chargers in europeinion,
what's a better fit for town to be successful on
the football field? Wow? You know, And I'm always a
little dubious of the teams that feel there they're that
one player away from being a champion, even if it
is a Tom Brady, because typically they're not. I don't

(26:37):
know that Tampa Bay with Tom Brady automatically makes them
a leader in the NFC. I'm not sure even with
the Charger team. And there's a lot more that has
to happen to the Chargers, you know, if he goes
to either team, particularly the Chargers, does that put them
in the top eche long with say Baltimore and Kansas
City going into this season, I'm not sure there's a

(26:58):
whole lot more that has to be uh and the
tough decision for him. He can go to obviously Chargers
and being in l A and that's home for him,
and that's got to be a you know, a nice thing.
But but there's also you gotta live in California and
pay those taxes you go to you go to Tampa,
you're gonna pay the you know, no income tax in Florida.
And then you're talking a huge amount of of taxes

(27:20):
when it comes to obviously or whether it's a thirty
million dollar contracts, so you know, a lot of factors
can go into it. He's made it clear he's going
to be paid. He has. He has made it abundantly clear. Um,
DeAndre Hopkins and Stefon Diggs both traded in the same day.
Let's start with DeAndre Hopkins. Help me out with what
you think. Bill O'Brien's thinking was, Well, that's a tough

(27:44):
one because when you look at it on paper, it's
just done't add up in my book. Um, when I
first saw I thought Okay, he must be going in
the last year of his contract. They don't want to
deal with the holdout in the whole nine yards. Um,
he's got three years up on those contracts my understanding,
and and so there's you know, there's going to be
the rest of the story to steal a Paul Harvey

(28:05):
term um, for us to find out exactly how this
thing went down and why it went down in the
way that it did, because on paper, that trade out
just doesn't look right. With a Grunt and Digs he's
going to help, certainly Buffalo, But what they gave up
for him again, oh boy, that's a lot. And you're

(28:25):
saying he's going to be an absolute dominant one for
you and and as good as Digs is, and he
is good, I don't know if he's that dominant one.
That seems to be a lot to give up for him.
It does seem to be a lot, a lot to
give up for him. And he had frustrations with the
Vikings offense. I wonder if he has frustrations with Josh
Allen some accuracy issues. Although we'll see how he how

(28:47):
he grows with with another year under his belt. Um.
Brian Billik our guest on The Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. The Panthers have said, Hey, if Cam
Newton you want to find a trade partner, go for it.
I mentioned as soon as they hired Joe Brady, I
thought Terry Bridgewater be the guy because they had been
together in New Orleans. That makes sense. My My thought is,

(29:08):
and you know way more about this league than I've
You've forgotten more about this league than I even know.
So I'm wondering if the Panthers don't want Cam Newton, okay,
new system, new regime, If the Redskins, who's offensivecording was
his quarterback coach, whose head coach was, If the Redskins
don't want him, who who should want him to be
their starter? Those are legitimate questions. You know, obviously Cam

(29:32):
Newton has a proven starter in this league, approven star.
Uh is he's still at that point, particularly his style
of play and the injuries and and obviously the older
he gets. This isn't you know Tom Brady playing at
forty two. This is a big man that you know,
the physicality of his game is a big part of
his game, and can he continue to do that? Um? Yeah,

(29:53):
there's gonna be some t you know, there's teams certainly
need quarterbacks and and he's going to have something to
say about, well, you know, I'm not gonna go to
just any team. I remember when the Ravens did this
after I had left. They ray Lewis and we're talking
about ray Lewis now got to the end of his
career and and he did the same thing. And the
contract didn't seem right, and he said, he said, well,

(30:14):
we want you here, here's our number, but you're welcome
to go shop. And he did, and he couldn't find
a better buyer. And and it maybe Cam Newton finds
the same thing. Doug Allup show on Fox Sports Trader
dis Philip Rivers in Indie Work. Sure, you know Philip
Rivers was a thirty two touchdown yard thrower two years ago.

(30:34):
Like anything, you got to wrap the right things around him.
And maybe not quite as old as Brady, but still
getting there where it's like, oh man, at some point,
and I'm not going to be the one to say
that neither one of them can play, because they can.
But when it when we hit that wall, when you
start going over that precipice, it's a quick fall and
and are they there. I don't know, but we're gonna

(30:55):
find out very readily. And they obviously believe that Philip
Rivers still had us. You know, the hard thing with Philip,
it's just deliver. You're so unorthodox. It's hard to look
at it and say, well, the physical aspects of it
are are are different because they were so different to
begin with. So uh, yeah, it's a good fit. It
will make indeed better certainly better enough, and we'll find out.

(31:20):
How does the Dak Prescott Dallas Cowboys contracting pass playout?
I think the page he go is not clearly They're
they're not willing to at this point give him the
money that he thinks he's deserved one of these hundred
plus million contracts that truly is a hundred million You know,
you look at the Ryan Tannehill contract. There are some
things in there that protect them. Um, but word, that's

(31:42):
what starting quarterbacks in the NFL are getting right now.
And and uh, you know, Dallas lived through this with
Troy Aikman at the tail end of his career and
the dead money they had to deal with it. I
think they want to be prudent. Uh, it does raise
some questions about you know, they truly believe that Dak
Prescott is that guy. But paying as you go, particularly

(32:04):
with the cap going up to hundred millions, not a
bad way to go either. So it's it's it's it's
fair enough, and you know that's that's not bad money
for Dak Prescott. It's not like you're disrespecting it. No,
not at not at all. By the way, if you

NFL game? What does the NFL look like you here
from now? Wow, It's it's getting interesting in there because
it is a sea change. I think the roster sizes
is eventually are gonna have to change. Uh, you know,

(32:46):
the length of the season, the cutting down of the
hitting in practice and training camp, which I don't know
is a good thing. I mean, I was noted for
not having real physical training camps even though we were
a physical team. I think the coach is legitimately given
the injuries we have early in the season. Are concerned

(33:06):
about the amount of time that you have to get
your players into hitting shape. And that's very, very real.
Of course the coaches weren't consulted on this um, but
that it was a concern before, it's going to be
even more of a concern now. But hey, that's the rules.
It's a long season. It makes sense on paper, you know,
in terms of, well, if we're gonna go a longer season,

(33:27):
we can't has hit as much of training camp. You know,
getting a flu shot in real science makes sense. Okay,
I'm not gonna do it, putting putting the virus into

Let's get to a game bag. This is game top
side on the dog that leave show Dan Buyer, what

(35:15):
do you got dog? The game today is all right,
Doug rank the most likely destinations for Tom Brady now
that the field has been dwindled by at least one
I think since the last time we revisited this or
visited this topic, let's revisit it again. Most likely destinations
for Tom Brady. Uh, well, there are a couple of

(35:37):
different sources now saying Tom Brady will sign with the
Tampa Buccaneers. A lot of fake accounts too. There's some
fake accounts, you know, there's some fake accounts, there's some
real Okay, I mean look, Cowherd said that somebody, a
well placed entertainment source I was told by somebody I
was on the phone during the break, said tom Brady

(35:58):
still deciding, still this siding. So uh guy, somebody Greg Allman,
who has rights for the covers the Bucks for the
Athletic says, uh that, let's see here, Tom Brady the
Bucks is not a done deal yet, could very well
end up happening, could even be announced Wednesday, but as now,

(36:19):
any reports have done is premature. I'm gonna say Chargers one,
Buccaneers too. I don't think there's a mystery team. Three. No,
Dolphins doesn't doesn't go along with it. Dolphins was I
think the mystery team that people are thinking about. But
so we'll just put yeah, one and two. Quarterback moves

(36:42):
so far this off season, Now, there are a bunch
of different ones. You could be Dak being, you know,
getting the franchise tag. Jason la Canfora reported earlier today
that the Colts and Philip Rivers finalizing a deal. You
got Teddy Bridgewater likely to Carolina. What was the question,
what are your favorite quarterback moves so far this off season?

(37:04):
Even quarterback? I mean, like, look, the Brady is the
big one. But that that have happened already, Right, that's
the question. Do I consider Philip Rivers that happened already?
Sure looks like it's gonna be to the Cultus. Okay,
I'll do Philip Rivers one to the Colts. Um. I
would say Teddy Bridgewater to Carolina too, right, because that

(37:27):
also unseats um unseats Cam Newton and Ryan Tannehill to
staying with the Titans is three? All right? Doug Rank.
What major sports you think will return first. Best chance
of returning first would be basketball that NBA basketball because

(37:49):
they they will play without fans because and there's motivation
to do so because it's the postseason basketball, all right.
Rank What precautions are the toughest for you to follow
during coronavirus threat? Washing hands about off your face? Is it?
You know, not picking my nose? And and you know

(38:13):
it's it's a funny one. I wish you. I wish
I was lying and making it up. I really do
not always like I'm not like going like full knuckles
deep right like in Caddyshack, but just a little edge thing,
you know. I feel like I have a have a
big nose and I get this little these little books
at the end of the nose, and I just it's
like an old habit to just kind of like kind

(38:34):
of get all the nose stuff off the end there.
Not picking nose. Number one, you're good at washing the hands?
Wiping washing would say, not going out and doing stuff
like not all everything being closed is too And then um,
is there a third one? Well, I can tell you.

(38:56):
I can tell you this. Um. Now, Adam Schefter is
saying that for Philip Rivers of the Colts gonna be
a one year deal, one and done, one and done.
This is game time on The Dug Gottlieb Show. T

(39:43):
You heard that breaking news for Brooklyn Nets tested positive
for the coronavirus um, which means all of them will
be in isolation. Am I allowed to make the Nets?
And Kyrie and Kevin Rant very obvious isolation jokes? Who
will perform veteran ISO and who will not? Now we're
not going to do that, but you can. You can.

(40:07):
You're allowed to somehow paid professional not allowed to. I'm
the worst person ever. If I said something, and I'm
not saying this, but if I did say that Kyrie
Irving isolation for two weeks sounds like his dream. Right,
you're allowed to say that, I'm not somehow the joke
that writes itself, I'm not allowed to say, all right, welcome.

(40:30):
In the news of the day is that Tom Brady
won't be back. We don't know where Tom Brady will go.
Some are saying it's a done deal in Tampa. Some
of the rapporting in Tampa, my sources closed. Uh two.
One of the NFL teams says they've just heard Brady
still decide. They haven't ever done in any way. We'll

(40:51):
see the man who I was on Colin Cowherd show
on February seventh, Right, so that's a month and a
half or so are ago. What a different world we're
living in now. He came on as a guest and
he said, and I quote, zero point zero percent chance
that Tom Brady returned to the Patriots. Zero point zero.
And I was like, yeo, man, don't you want to

(41:12):
do like one of a million? So you're saying there's
a chance, he said, nope, zero point zero joined us now.
His names t Jman is out of former Pro Bowl
wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals, t J, how's your
victory lab going? Honestly, not not too bad man. It
was funny though once I said it. In a week
after that, everybody, you know, the real reporters started reporting it.

(41:33):
But it was I mean, a lot of it was
in black and white. If you want to get back,
you don't put the language in his contract that you
put in it, and if you do, you sign them
during the season to one extension. Once all that didn't happen. Um,
it was a foreground conclusion that he was gonna leave. Okay,
So how much of this was them wanting to move

(41:54):
on and how much of it was Brady want to
move on. I think it's a little combination of both.
Everybody man, anything you do, and we're all the same one.
We all want to feel appreciated and wanted. I don't
think he felt that, and it kind of started a
couple of years back when he wanted to want an extension.
It didn't happen. Um. Really, what really kicked it off

(42:17):
was in essence, he wanted to get rid of him
and keep Jimmy g Craft had to step in. From
that point forward. I believe the relationship was never the
same you look at the disagreement. To uh, Belichick was
having an organization with Alex Guerrero, who's very tight with Brady.
Was just so many things that were going on and
was occurring that was rubbing Brady the wrong way, and

(42:39):
so he saw the writing on the wall. I'm sure
he thought maybe we could mend fences, and obviously they could.
Is Alex Carrero the Yoko owner on the breakup. No,
I wouldn't call it that. I wouldn't call it to me.
I look at the Jimmy g situation where Belichick was
basically he was gone Lawyer lay Hum and Richard Sea

(43:01):
Warm he was gonna get rid of him when he
could still play, and Bob crafts at, no, no, no,
you're not doing this. So they got rid of Jimmy.
You know, I don't believe Brady could ever get over that.
That's that's like your wife saying, no, I'm gonna gona
date another man, Okay, are you okay with it? Oh?
I'm gonna stay with you. I didn't know he had
a girlfriend, Like, who's gonna go for that? And so

(43:25):
Brady had to put up with it. And now that
he can leave, he's gonna leave, where's he go? I
personally believe he's gonna go to the Bucks. I believe
and I said it in February, that the Bucks will
be one of the teams. Um, they know how realistic

(43:45):
it would be. But when when I look at it offensively,
they got the weapons, they got a great tight end.
If a b is Uh gonna be signed, I believe
that's a great possibility of that happening as well. But
the biggest reason is you look at that division. Everybody
can plan in NFL. Every division is tough. But would
you rather play in a s C West with the Chiefs,

(44:09):
the Broncos, the Raters, or would you play rather play
in the NFC That would be the NFC South? Correct, Yes,
with with the Bucks? And so which which division would
you rather play in? And I believe he's that because
of that, he's gonna go to the Bucks. And not
to mention offensively, it's the best group of receivers he's

(44:30):
played with since he had Marson West Welker. Do you
think they're better than Chargers in terms of offensive skill positions? Ah,
it's a push man, it really is. You You go,
Mike Evans, Keenan Allen Godwin, Mike Williams. You look at
the tight ends overall. The Charges might be slightly better,

(44:50):
but the division is not slightly better. It's a lot better.
And so you factor all those things in. They just
signed Re signed j PP, the franchise, Bear Sue's coming back.
The Bucks have some pieces, and our division is not
a stuff. Well this is This is one thing I
was told by somebody who it's been in on these discussions,

(45:12):
that that the division has nothing to do with it.
That guys like Tom Brady don't They don't They want
to be on a good team. But the idea of hey,
there's a team in your division which might like Tom Brady,
doesn't lose divisions. He's not. He doesn't even think that way.
All the rest of the stuff. My question is, does
Tampa makes sense in terms of a market place you
want to live in. It's a beautiful area, but it

(45:35):
it is one of the outposts of the NFL, as
opposed to the Chargers who are in l A and
spreading his brand of TV twelve. It has been pretty
important to when when I was informed that the Bucks
were even gonna be an option. When I first said
he was leaving, I was shocked that the Bucks, that

(45:56):
the Bucks were even an option. That shocked me, and
so of them to be an option. He's gonna Seriously,
he's not worried about an easy and gels because that
that's going to handle itself personally, if you're looking at
all those things and every athlete looks at the division,
you're not you don't want to compete with a division

(46:17):
every year. Well, these next two years, you assume Brady's
gonna play with Mahomes, would you want to do that?
Would you want to compete with the Broncos in that
defense the Raiders are improving? Or would you say, oh,
let's look at the NFC South and yeah, you have
Drew Brees in it, but who else that that I

(46:39):
would look at and say, ah, that's a really tough division.
And so there's many variables. But I think off the
field he's worried about on the field. If you look
at the Chargers topped the bottom offensively and defensively they're
the better choice. But offensively, I mean it's pulling hairs, man.
The the Bucks have really really good weapons on off

(47:02):
inside of the ball. T jspins out of our guest
in the Doug Gotlips show on Fox Sports Radio. UM,
the Carolina Panthers appeared to be moving on from Cam
Newton Ted Bridgewater, who played in New Orleans last couple
of years. Joe Brady their new offense, according to was
in New Orleans. That that all makes sense. My thought was,
if the Panthers and the Redskins were made up of

(47:24):
former Panthers staffers. Don't want Cam Newton, why should anyone else? Man?
You cold blooded? I'm just tuck oning like it is,
right like like not. No one has any faith in
in Dwayne Haskins. Right, you've got a former m v P.
He's available. You can get him on the cheap, relatively
on the cheek if you If you're gonna take that

(47:48):
that standpoint and look at it from that perspective, I
can say I can see that the Panthers and Ron
River and those guys in Washington him, if you look
at what Cam has done for him the last two years,
why would they want him? The last two years? He
was hurt. Last year the year priority was hurt. He

(48:10):
hasn't want to start in however many games he started in,
and so it's what have you done for me? Lady.
Cam Newton hasn't done anything for the Panthers and Ron
River in the last two years, and so that's the
perspective they look at it. If Cam Newton is healthy,
Cam Newton is one of the better quarterbacks in the league.
And it's a big gift. You just don't know, but

(48:31):
you would assume he'll be thirty one. I believe in
May he has a lot of good football left in
him if he's healthy. When was he? I mean, who'sa
I love you, But he's had one great year. The
rest of the years have not been He's been very average.
I no, No, I wouldn't say Cam Newton. You can't

(48:52):
look at his passing statistics and say he's been average.
You gotta look at everything he brings to the table.
The way defensive has the plans are gonna bomb on
certain downs, makes the coverage easy. He is he Drew
Brees accurate, Tom Brady accurate throwing the ball. No, he isn't,
but he brings other things to the table that they
don't bring to the table, and so he was successful
in Carolina. Me personally, if I'm a receiver, do I

(49:16):
want to play with Cam Lewton? No? I don't because
I want the ball. But is he going to help
your team win? He can help a team win if
they can tailored office to him, get guys around them,
run the read option look and give him a back
like McCaffrey that that can run and catch. You got

(49:37):
a chance, t Josh beans Out, our guest in the
Doug Gotlive show here on Fox Sports Radio. I find
this to be interesting. Philip Rivers a one year deal
in Indie right, one year deal. Um, I love Philip Rivers.
You know, I've been a Charger fan. I think he's,
if anything, nationally underrated and I'm on some level excited

(49:59):
to see him back, Um with a guy who was
his you know, Frank Ryce, who is his play caller
in San Diego a couple of years ago. But he
felt washed up to me last year he just did.
Yeah it was Phila Rivers was It was bad, and
it was bad because he had weapons. You gotta keep

(50:20):
it now and you kind of Mike Williams. You had
Melvin Gordon when he reported, you had Heckler, you had him,
You had a really good team and he just couldn't
avoid the turnover. And so it looks to be when
you're a really good player, and Philler Rivers was a
great player. You you look at this shar and say

(50:42):
the coach, and Frank Ryce says, what my play calling,
with our schematics and things we're gonna do, He's not
gonna have a year And by signing a one year
deal and not a two year deal, I believe they're
looking at it from the perspective of we're probably not
what we're gonna get, but we're kind of going to
roll the dice and see what he can give us

(51:03):
and hope that him and Frank having at that relationship,
that things will be better. But with what he had
in San Diego and now you go to Andy and
it's a lot less. It's going to be very interesting.
T Judgeman is out of form a Pro Bowl wide receiver,
joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Can you make sense of why the UH Texans traded

(51:25):
DeAndre Hopkins? Boy? I care, because, really, especially when you
see what the Bills do you what did the Bills
give up to get Diggs? And everybody would say a
first round pick, I think a fifth and a sixth
day literally gave up DeAndre Hopkins for a second round

(51:49):
pick and the guarantee eleven million dollar deal with David
Johnson and running back who was going to probably be
released anyway or not. He wasn't gonna see the field much.
I don't know what's going on. I don't care if
he wants a new deal. He has three years left
on his deal. I don't get it. I don't know
what's going on in Houston, but you don't give up

(52:11):
a receiver that's twenty years old. At worst, he's the
third best receiver in the league. At worst, someone arguing
to say he's the best for David Johnson in the
second round pick. I have no idea what's going on.
But hey, kudos to the Cardinals. They make a move.
They got a can quarterback in Kyler Murray Um, they
get a couple more pieces. They're gonna They're gonna be

(52:33):
a force. Now, what do you think of Stefan? Stefan
digs like playing with Josh Allen. I've come to really like,
uh Josh Doug, I really do. He's out there training
with us, very personable, a leader and that's an understatement,
like he really knows how to lead. He connects with

(52:54):
the players. Um, really good arm. He's throwing the ball
with a lot of accuracy and work up. Again, this
is just this is just the workouts. But I liked us.
I think that's gonna be a pretty potent connection. And
Stefan Diggs wants to get down the field and you know, Josh,
I'll even get the ball down the field. Yeah, I
just you know. He he does have a reputation not
being terribly accurate. And and as much as the like,

(53:16):
the Viking system clearly didn't sit well with him, and
I'm sure some of her cousins things didn't sit well
with him. I just don't know Josh Allen's inaccuracy uh
sits well with him. But we we we we shall see.
I'm a Digs fan. I'm excited to see what's next
to men. Diggs is a route runner, can put his
slip in the ground, create separation. Um, any quarter. It's

(53:37):
hard to be inaccurate when you're throwing the ball to
Stefan Bigg because he does a really good job of
creating separation. Um. Okay, Uh, last thing, last thing, how
has how have you changed? Like, are you guys still
doing your workouts with the coronavirus scare, Like, what what's
changed with the coronavirus scare? And we're out on the
saild yesterday. Uh, the coronavirus has hit us today in tomorrow. Um,

(54:01):
we'll be back on the field Thursday. But it's smaller groups. Um,
not not as many guys as we were used to.
So we'll go into probably two groups. But yes, smaller groups,
but we still work. You may Uh, you gotta stay ready.
You've gotta be prepared. Do not be the guy that's
unprepared and not knowing what's going to happen. You will
be left behind. So man, the the train keeps moving,

years s Remport limitations apply the Cowboys either one the
Super Bowl, are acting like they won the Super Bowl.
I'll explain next. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The gott Leap Show weekdays at three pm Easter
noon Pacific. So we know this cycle because we've seen
the Rams and the cycle. We've seen the Eagles on

(55:09):
the cycle. Heck, we even see the Baltimore Ravens on
the cycle two times over winning super Bowls. You win
a super Bowl or you get to a Super Bowl,
you celebrate. Um, guys get bigger than needed contracts because well,
they won the Super Bowl and ultimately you have two
part ways with some other players down the road, and
it breaks up whatever could be a possible dynasty. You

(55:33):
guys familiar with that? Isn't that what the Cowboys are doing? Right?
Like you have a Marie Cooper a hundred million dollars,
like Mark Cooper did not have a great year, was
not in at the end of the Eagles game when
they needed him. Oh he was banged up. Like okay,

(55:54):
I mean huge, huge money, forty million guarantees. So you
resign a Marii Cooper and you lose Byron Jones, you
lose uh, Robert Quinn, who's number one in pressures on
the team. Ezeke Elliott massive contract, Dak Prescott's gonna get
a massive contract. The Dallas Cowboys are It's like they're

(56:16):
handing out dividends and the company didn't make any money. Yeah,
we're we're actually going bankrupt. Like that's okay. Everybody gets
their Christmas bonuses. You guys didn't actually win anything. You
even get to the playoffs, and you're all getting new
contracts that are ridiculous in numbers, and you're having part
ways of the good players. What's the motivation in having

(56:40):
a good year? When you have a bad year, you
can get this kind of money. Cowboys are literally partying
salary wise like they won something. And in the worst
division in football, where everybody else is just mired by injuries.
You couldn't finish above, you couldn't be winning teams, you
couldn't make the playoffs, and for that you get your

(57:01):
having part ways with Robert Quinn and Byron Jones, two
of your three or four best defensive players. Good luck
with that. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

Volan joins us. He works with the Boston Globe. He's

(57:24):
covering the Patriots for years, covers the entire NFL. He's
their NFL reporter for the Boston Globe. Palm on Twitter
at ben Volan. What's your um reaction to the announcement
of Tom Brady will no longer be a Patriot earlier today?
Even though we all saw this coming. Even look, not
everyone predicted this, but everyone knew this was coming down

(57:44):
the pike. That is a very real possibility that Tom
Brady would be leaving. We're still shocking to see the
finality of it. Um. I really did think that the Patriots,
Robert Kraft would get together with Brady at the last
minute and make something happen. That's how it's going so
many times between them in the in the past, um,
And you know, the deals always come together very quickly.

(58:05):
So I was just it was still shocking to see
the finality of it, to see that Brady still wants
to play football and then it's not going to be
in a Patriots uniform. It's just it's very strange, and
you'd think after they made it through the Jimmy Garoppolo
fiasco and Brady came out on top and then wanted
another Super Bowl. It seemed like a lot that Brady
would be finishing his career in New England. And here
we are, just two years after they traded away Garoppolo.

(58:28):
The Patriots now don't have Tom Brady and they don't
have a great succession plan at quarterback. So very surprising
all the round, all the way around, just because I
thought the Patriots weren't ready to move on, and I
thought Brady would realize that or come to expect that
that coming back to the Patriots would be his best
path forward. But it didn't see like didn't seem like
either side could could see I I right now, And

(58:50):
here we are, Brady's breaking up with the Patriots and
and moving on and probably gonna finish his career as
a Tampa Bay Bucker, maybe an l A Charger. Why
why is this happened two years after they survived the
Garoppolo thing? You know, I think it's it's multifaceted. From
Brady's point of view, I think he feels like he
feels like he hasn't been appreciated enough, even after wainning

(59:11):
the fifth and the six Super Bowls, the Patriots still
weren't giving him the contract for life that he was
looking for. He's been adamant, I want to play on
forty five and they've been making him go year to year,
and when he asked for a new contract, they give
him performance incentives and just kind of insulting offers all
the way around. They've really played hardball with him and
have never have never, you know, given him an inch

(59:32):
as far as a little bit of leeway. And you know, again,
the guys won six Super Bowls for him, and and
on the other side, the Patriots, they're like, well, this
is how we always always have conducted business, and this
is why we've been so successful because we don't get
too emotionally attached. And they probably weren't thrilled with the
fact that Brady skipped OTAs the past couple of years.
And I think they looked at it. You know, the

(59:53):
cold heart truth is that Brady is gonna be a
forty three year old quarterback and his performance, his stats
were down across the board last year. I think they're
just ready to move on. Um. I think the Patriots
did technically give Brady an offer but it was so
low that you know, he of course was going to
reject it and move on. And I think it was
one of those here's our offer, and Tom, it's time
to take the hint. It's time to end this thing

(01:00:13):
and move on. Um. So it's it's it is strange that,
you know, the only thing I really blame the Patriots
for is not having a great succession plan. They had
it all lined up with Jimmy Garoppolo, they traded him away.
They haven't done anything at backup quarterback the last two years.
Now maybe they have Jared's did him something out of
their forefround pick, but he's only thrown four NFL passes.
They can't know for sure that he's going to be

(01:00:35):
the next guy. And it's like they had their Brett
far to Aaron Rodgers, they had their Joe Montana to
Steve Young all set up and now they don't, And
now they're gonna be scrambling at quarterback. And look, Belichick
always has a plan of his sleep, but I'm surprised
that they decided to move on from Brady without having
a clear and certain um succession plan after him. I

(01:00:58):
think all fans are pointing to the Bucks. Um I
think they have uh, not only a better team than
the Chargers, you know, I think the defense, especially led
by Todd Bowls, is better than people give it credit for.
But I think an underrated aspect to is the fact
that Tampa Bay does operates on the completely different side
of the NFL universe from the Patriots, and they don't

(01:01:18):
have the Patriots on their schedule next year, and Brady
just doesn't have to deal with any of that awkwardness
of playing against the Patriots. Uh. The Chargers do host
the Patriots in l A next year. Like another team
that's come up today, the Dolphins, they obviously would have
to play the Patriots twice next year, including one game
in in Gellette Stadium, and I just don't think Brady
wants to deal with that. I think he'd rather just

(01:01:39):
go to Tampa Bay and look it. The only way
he would play the Patriots would be in the Super Bowl,
which would just be you know, all sorts of incredible.
But I think the fact that they're on the other
end of the universe there and have nothing to do
with the Patriots. I think that is a big selling
point for for Tom Brady. I get all that I
do not think they have a better team or even
close to the team the Chargers have. I just I
just don't I uh, you know, I if healthy the Chargers,

(01:02:03):
I mean, Derwin James might be the best defense player
in the NFL. He and Nick Bosa he didn't play
much of last year. You had him to Joey Bosa
and Melvin Ingram. Like, the defense is good, the offense
is good. They need better quarterback play. But the other parts,
I would I would roundly agree with you. Do you
think that the division plays I've been told division doesn't
play a role like guy like Tom Brady, like he

(01:02:24):
doesn't care. He just thinks, put me on a good
team will win. Do you think the division plays a part? Well,
I mean, I think it has to. And that's another thing.
If you go to the Chargers, not only do you
have to play the Chiefs twice a year, but you
have to deal with them. And the Chiefs and Patrick
Mahomes don't look like they're going anywhere Whereas the NFC South,
I think it's wide open. Like, yeah, the Saints are
still a very good team obviously, and Drew Brees is

(01:02:45):
coming back. But the other two teams who knows what's
gonna happen with the Falcons and the Panthers. Uh. The
NFC in general doesn't have you know, a clear front
running team, uh like the a s C does with
with the UH with the Chiefs. So I just um,
I think division plays a big factor in it, and
just his ability to win and the coach too. I

(01:03:05):
mean he doesn't. I don't think he has much of
a relationship with either Anthony Lynn or Bruce Arians. But
Bruce Arians is a guy who's an NFL lifer, not
that Anthony Lynn isn't, but he's dealt with some big
time quarterbacks. He's coach Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, UH, Carson Palmer,
Andrew Luck. I think that's what Tom Brady would more
be looking for, um, just someone he'd he'd feel comfortable

(01:03:27):
with from a football perspective. And Bruce Arians has proven
in several different places that he knows how to get
the most out of his quarterbacks, whereas Anthony Lynn, Shane
Stike Stike in I don't even know if that's how
you pronounce the offensive. Yeah, I mean, I just don't
know if Brady has any sort of relationship with them whatsoever. So, Um,
you know, the Chargers are interesting, But I just think

(01:03:47):
all the factors pointed in Tampa Bay Buccaneers Douglas show
here on Fox Sports Radio, Teddy Bridge wanted Carolina makes
sense because Joe Brady was in New Orleans when Bridgewater
was there. Um, what what about? What does Cam Newton do?
I mean, obviously the Panthers are now looking to trade him,

(01:04:10):
and if they aren't able to trade him for a
bucket of football, they'll probably just release him. I actually
had peg Cam Newton to Los Angeles earlier this offseason.
I think he would be an interesting seat warmer. I
think we all expect the Chargers if they don't get
Tom Brady, to be um interested in a rookie in
the draft. I think they had the seventh overall pick.
But Cam Newton would look great as the seat warmer

(01:04:32):
for a year or two. Uh they he I don't
think he would, you know, build tremendous buzz. But you know,
him and Anthony Lynn the only, maybe the only minority
quarterback head coach carrying in the league. Moving into the
new stadium in Los Angeles, that that maybe is a
team that part of the community can can rally around
and uh so, I you know, Cam Newton is gonna
you know, Chargers might be his best place, um for

(01:04:54):
a starting spot. Otherwise he might have to go be
a backup somewhere and um, you know, go to one
of those teams like the Bears that have Mitchell Trobiski
kind of on the hot seat and maybe Cam Newton
takes over. But for a guy who you know, his
performance has been very up and down throughout his career.
His accuracies, uh issues have been well documented, and he's
just been banged up now. I mean the thing about

(01:05:16):
Cam Newton that you loved was he was such a
physical freak. But now he's been getting injured and getting
hurt and you just don't know if he's going to
be the same player again. Um So, Cam Newton, you know,
if it's not the Chargers, I'm not quite sure where
he's gonna be able to find a starting job this year.
I tend to agree with you, Doug Gottlieb show Fox
for and I don't think the Chargers are are legit
possibility that they think to Rod Taylor is a better

(01:05:36):
option for a similar type of of quarterback and draft
a young one if they don't get if they don't
get Tom Brady, Ben Bowling. Our guest Boston Globe covers
the entire National Football League. Um, what do you make
of Philip Rivers only signing a one year deal? You know,
I'm almost surprised that he even got a job. I mean,
this is a thirty year old quarterback who the Chargers

(01:05:56):
didn't want, and I think the Chargers think that his
career year is pretty much over with at this point,
So I'm actually surprised that they made the move and
they're giving him twenty five million dollars for next year. Uh,
it's obviously just an opportunity to buy some time until
they can figure out what they want to do in
the draft. Um, they just gave up their first round pick,
so they probably aren't gonna be drafting a quarterback anytime soon.

(01:06:19):
Or if they are, it's you're gonna be a mid
round guy. My eyes are on Jacoby Brissetting. Now do
they keep him? Do they look to trade him? I
think he'll have a lot of trade value. Um, a
guy who started decent number of games, has played fairly
well in the NFL, also has a very reasonable contract.
You only have to pay him thirteen to fifteen million
next year. So I'm curious now, now the Rivers in

(01:06:40):
the fold, do they trade Jacoby Brissette. Heck, maybe the
Patriots try to get Brissette back and they roll with
Jacoby Brissette and Jared's did him for next year. That
wouldn't be the worst idea. But I think that the Colts.
The Colts just wanted an upgrade from Brissett, and they
believe that Rivers, when you reunite him with Frank Reich
and Nick Sirianni, who with him in San Diego, maybe
they can recreate the magic. But I think they're just

(01:07:02):
buying themselves one year of time until they figure it out.
And Philip Rivers is happy to have a job again
and one that pays him pretty well. Where's James play?
That's another great question. Uh, I don't. He's definitely not
coming to New England. The turnovers would drive Belichick and
Josh McDaniels absolutely crazy. I mean, which teams are gonna

(01:07:23):
need a backup quarterback? Obviously Chicago needs someone and you
know they can't count on Mr Bisky, so they've got
to upgrade that position big time. You know, I haven't
really sat down and uh figured out the map of
where Winston can go. But you know, he still has
some talent. He threw for five thousand yards and thirty touchdowns,
so there's gonna be some interest there. But I think,

(01:07:44):
like Cam Newton, he's gonna have to look for a
team that just doesn't have a secure starter and you know,
hope that he can pull a Ryan Tannehill and and
join in, you know, weeks six, weeks seven, and save
the day for his team and let that lead to
the next job. But you know Winston and his thirty interceptions,
that that stuff is what scares teams away. You know,

(01:08:04):
everyone loves the big yards and the big touchdowns. Butticks
is pretty hard to wrap your head around in today's NFL.
So you know, I think Winston and Cam Newton might
be in the same boat where they have a tough
time trying to find a starting job for this year.
I I agree with you on on both accounts. My
thought on Cam Newton is if if Caroline doesn't want him, okay,

(01:08:26):
if Washington doesn't want him either. You know, considering the offense,
according to was a quarterback coach and the head coach
was his coach. His entire career. I I don't I
don't know why anybody else would anybody else would would
want m um make heads retails. Why why was DeAndre
Hopkins sent to Arizona? I think this was the case
of Bill O'Brien letting his emotions get the best of him.

(01:08:48):
And why it's good at to have a separation of
powers between GM and head coach, unless your guys Bill Belichick,
who's just cold as ice and robotic and doesn't get
emotionally attached, you know, some it's it to have uh
some separation between the guy who picked the players and
the head coach. And I just think Bill O'Brien uh
did not he he thinks that DeAndre Hopkins might be

(01:09:11):
a little bit of a diva. Didn't always he was
always making like little snide comments about DeAndre Hopkins. And
I just you know, he's also a guy who wants
to get paid a bigger contract. I think the Cardinals
are paying him through the roof, and um, you know, look,
he's a phenomenal player. I don't mean to downgrade in this,
but as great as he is, what have the Texans

(01:09:31):
really want? So you know, I think they're looking at
it that they could uh create some financial flexibility by
trading him away, and other receivers will be able to
make up some of that production. But I do think
he was too emotional and just got fleeced in the
in the trade because he just wanted to get rid
of the guy. You look at what the um Vikings

(01:09:52):
got for Stefon Diggs. I mean the Texans getting an
overpaid running back in a second round pick, like they
should have gotten way more for DeAndre hop And so
I think it was just a case of Bill Bill
O'Brien just letting his emotions get the best of him. Uh.
And then with with Stefon Diggs, how happy do you
think he'll be in Buffalo considering Josh Allen's and accuracies. Yeah,

(01:10:13):
I've got week four for the overunder for when Stefon Digg,
you know, changes his Instagram profile to you know, takes
Buffalo bills off of it or throws the temper tantrum.
He's he's the guy who seems like he's not happy
unless he's unhappy. And if he didn't like Kirk Cousins,
just wait till you get Josh Allen, because not only
is he inaccurate, but he doesn't see, you know, that
doesn't anticipate the throws, doesn't see the field. He's a

(01:10:35):
tremendous athlete and he's a really tough kid. But I
still think Josh Allen has a long way to go
as a passer. And it's like, you know, the Bears
and the Bills are similar with with these guys like
Josh Allen and Mitchell tro Biscuit, you can get them
the best receivers in the world. That's not necessarily going
to make him a better quarterback. So I'm very curious
to see how that one works. And I do think

(01:10:55):
we're gonna see some temper tantrums from Stefon Diggs next year.
I completely agree to you. Well, it's weird days in general,
and weird times in New England. Cannot wait to see
what happens next to Tom Brady obviously, what happens next
for the Patriots. Ben, thanks so much for recovering all

(01:12:24):
Rob Parker. Plus you have other shows, um, Jason Smith
and Mike Harmon, and then who am I forgetting? Oh
Ben Maller, and get Ben Maller as well. Um, here's
what the fox said, noo say. This is Albert Brier

(01:12:45):
from the NFL Network on The Herd today on the
Buccaneers being a good fit for Tom Brady. It makes sense,
and I think there are a couple of reasons why.
Number One, one of his greatest frustrations last year was
what was around him, um, and that wouldn't be a
problem to the number two thing is flexibility within an offense.
Number Three, I do think Bruce arians previous experience with

(01:13:08):
older quarterbacks, in particular Carson Palmer is a selling point there.
A number four and I don't think you can over
underrate this one. The fact that it's actually a plane
ride the two three hours from Tampa to New York. UM,
I think will be a factor based on who they
were going up against, and that's the Chargers. And so
you roll all four of those things into one, and

(01:13:29):
Tampa does make some sense. I do think the working
with veteran quarterbacks before is part of the conversation. As
part of the Chargers sale was, Hey, Shane Stekin has
been the quarterback coach with Philip Rivers, then became the
offensive coordinator. So I think all those are legit factors.
I think the problem. My problem is like charges of
Rosters is better, She's purely better. Um, that's not to

(01:13:52):
think a shot of Tampa. I think Tampa is good
and really well coached, not just the offensive side with Arians,
but the defense side as well. I just I don't
think they had the personnel division wise. Yeah, I mean,
I obviously can't say it's gonna be good. Cancer would
be good. But the Saints are gonna be good, all right,
are they? I don't think that Tom Brady walks in

(01:14:12):
and cares about the division. The cares about football team,
compares about the coaching, compares about where you're gonna live.
And I just struggle with the idea that Tampa would
be the market that he'd go to. Maybe it's Florida,
it's kind of rejuvenation, Maybe takes over the whole state
of Florida. Maybe that's the deal. And Tampa is a
great area, and you can get a hell of a
lot of house for not a lot of money right

(01:14:34):
on the water. Um, But yeah, I don't. I don't know.
I'm not really feeling it. Plus, Arians wants to throw
the ball deep downfield, and that's not what That's what
Brady used to do. Doesn't do it now? That one
strikes me as a bit odd. Say bye, what do
you think you think it becomes Tampa. I'm I'm faster.

(01:14:57):
I do think. I do think there's something about Miami
with that mystery team, the Stephen Ross, Tom Brady, uh
Michigan connection, Brian Flores, the familiarity there. I do think
that that could be a possibility. But I do think
And when t J said it and TJ started, uh
hushman Don who's on earlier in the show, if anyone

(01:15:18):
missed it, When you know, you start rattling down the
Buccaneers offense and for a team that had the best
run defense in the NFL last year, and he mentioned
the division, You're like, yeah, I mean, you know, you
you could counter Mike Williams and Keenan Allen with Chris
Godwin and Mike Evans just like that. So yeah, yeah,

(01:15:40):
I you know, I don't know, I um, look at
the teams that they beat. I mean, let's let's not
get a twist the teams that they beat when they
won four in a row and James played better. Where
the Falcons, the Jags, the Colts, the Lions. Right, tell
me which one of those teams made the playoffs? None
of them. They didn't the playoff team last year. And I,

(01:16:02):
I and I would also say that some of those
stats are skewed because it's hard to tell how good
their defense was. James through so many picks, he put
their defense in precarious situations and flat out scored for
the other team. You know, Jamie's did for yards, thirty
three touchdowns, thirty interceptions. Um, I don't know about the

(01:16:23):
running game, that would be a big question because Ronald
Jones was not liked that they did not. Yeah, last
year he started a more of a role, yes, but
it was it was still seven four yards running the
football like it's the The sale is. They got Godwin,
they got Mike Evans, they got O J. Howard. This

(01:16:45):
would be the greatest thing ever for O. J. Howard's career, right,
and Cameron brad and you got those those two dudes.
Braid is I mean, I think we all think Bread's
a little bit better. But O j. Howard was the
guy that only catch the ball for Alabama in the
in the College Football Playoff, never in the regular season,
and tight ends too aren't necessarily match made in Heaven. Yeah,
I it does strike me as a little bit of

(01:17:07):
an onfit. I like Goodwin, Godwin, I like Evans, I
like Bruce Are. I can like all of these things
and makes sense. I just you like man. And maybe
it's because I see the Chargers more and I know
how good everybody thinks Derwin James is. I'm not sure
if people understand exactly what they have personnel wise. All Right, well,
we'll see if we get We'll see if we get

(01:17:28):
an answer to that today. Probably tomorrow's would all sources
point to why, right, why did the dynasty end? Let's discuss?

of Tom Brady he'll join us in mere moments. If
you're just joining us the news the day, if you
woke up to Tom Brady announced and then the team

(01:18:08):
had their own statement. Will no longer play for the
New England Patriots. Strong rumors point to the Tampa Buccaneers.
I've been told that the Chargers still waiting on the decision,
have been told he hasn't made a decision. So we don't.
We don't know, but um, this is a look, this
is a long time marriage that's ending in a divorce.
We shouldn't. We shouldn't thumb our noses at what took

(01:18:31):
place during the marriage? Right? Six super Bowl championships, nine
Super Bowl appearances, thirteen a f C Championship games. Incredible stuff.
He is the most successful quarterback in the history of
the nash Football League and by many people's estimation, the
greatest of all time. And he's gonna play in another
uniform for at least one more maybe two. We'll see

(01:18:55):
how many more seasons. So what led to the breakup?
I'll give my own thoughts. First, Let's welcome in Charlie Wise.
You can hear him on Series x M NFL Radio
from seven am to ten am Eastern time. Charlie, thanks
so much for joining us. When when you heard the news,
and I know you know more, you know more than
you've you've let in on and occasionally you've let people

(01:19:15):
in on some of the conversations texting otherwise you've had
with Tom. When it was announced today, what did you
immediately think? Well, even though I knew it was a
possibility that could happen, the finality of it actually happened.
And you know, kind of stunt you you know, anyone
who acts like you know, love they knew he was gone.

(01:19:35):
They're all full of crap, as you know, I mean,
because no one really knew because I don't think he
even made his mind he was gone until the night
before from what I understand. You know, so um, forget
about what the reason the reason that he's gone is,
because that will eventually come out, you know. Right now,

(01:19:57):
everyone's gonna be lovey dovey, you know, every say all
the politically correct things, because that's what people, you know,
professionals do. They come out and you know, show signs
of respect all around and thank everyone and and move on,
you know, and somewhere down the road that you know,
we'll you know, we'll get into more details. But in reality,

(01:20:19):
even though I knew that this, the longer this process
went on, the the less likely he was going to
be back in New England. But I have to admit
when I heard this morning, was like, you've got to
kid me, you know, you know, and you know I
had for the last month. Fortunately, you know, I was
one of the one saying, look at I think he's

(01:20:41):
going back to New England. I'm not sure, but he
doesn't go back to New England. I think he's either
going to go to Tampa or the Charters. So right now,
right right, right now, I'm looking pretty good, you know.
I think, even though he might end up somewhere else,
right now, I think that they're both the leaders in
the clubhouse. I can tell you that I talked to

(01:21:04):
significant people today, and significant meaning they know in within
both those organizations today and neither one of them know
what he's doing. So he has not told he has
not told either team that he's coming. I have a
connection within one of those two organizations significant and said

(01:21:26):
the exact exact same thing, and honestly said the exact
same thing about you. You're leading up that everybody thought
the signs point that he was to leaving, but no
one actually believes until it actually happens. Look, I I
know you're saying the details will in fact come out,
but it's still from the sound of how you're describing
it and what how we're reacting to it, it feels

(01:21:48):
like up until last night or yesterday, it was it
was fixable, it was savable. Do you believe it was
the relationship was fixable up until yesterday? Yeah, I don't
know what the determining factor who really really was? You know,
I don't know if it was contract. I don't know

(01:22:09):
if it was you know, getting more weapons around you.
I mean, how would you like to watch DeAndre Hopkins
and Stefan Dicks and and while we're at it, Hooper
from UH from Atlanta all go to other teams, you know,
the day before when you when when you're hoping for

(01:22:30):
a front line wide receiver in a tight end, you know,
so you watch those guys go by the boards, especially
DeAndre Hopkins who obviously you could have got it for
a ham sandwich based off of the trade value that
that that that Arizona tope to go ahead and get them.
But you know, I don't know if it's the personnel
around him. I don't know. If it was the contract.

(01:22:52):
I don't know if he I don't know if he
held you know that he wasn't getting his proper you know,
proper do I don't know if he just wanted to
freshtor it. You know, I really don't know which one
of those the answer is. And you know, it might
be a combination of all those things, but some of
them in his priority of things, some of them are

(01:23:14):
obviously come out more important than others. I know this.
I know the most important thing that Tommy is that
he'd like to continue playing, and he doesn't want to
end like it ended this year. You know, he'd like
to get he'd like an opportunity to play in February,
and to play in February that means you're playing in

(01:23:37):
a big dance. Charlie weis joining us in the Doug
Otlips Show on Fox Sports Radio. If you were going
to advise him, if you said, Charlie, what do you
think Tampa where you have Bruce Arians, you have a
couple of talented wide receivers, not a not a great
running game, um, pretty good defense, obviously well coached, defensively
and a litt bit of a weaker division. Good Weather,

(01:23:59):
and to the games in that division or in the dome.
You're in the NFC, not the a f C or
the Chargers where you have Shane Steken. He worked with
Philip Rivers, but relatively unproven, great skill position players. It
seems like they're trying to fix the offensive line, some
really talented players on defense. It's in l a very
different market. Warm Weather going to play in a dome.
Uh and you can practice outside year round. If you

(01:24:21):
can advise him, what do you think the best course
of action is? Well, I'm gonna throw in a couple
other factors in here. Both these coordinators are young, inexperienced guys.
So at the end of the day, he's gonna have
a lot of input no matter which one of those
two places he went. I mean, because he is, he's
called more placed than those those two guys put together.

(01:24:44):
I mean, I don't know if it's not even close.
You know, Bruce doesn't call the place in Tampa Vilan left,
which does you know? So when and when it comes
right down to it, wherever Tommy goes, he's gonna have
significant input on everything. That happen pens on offense. It's
very similar to one Payton who went to Denver. You know,

(01:25:05):
he's not going there to let some young guy you know,
start for to start from scratch. Now, he'll work with them,
but you know he's definitely gonna have input. So I
think you can take both those scenarios encountered as a
tie because one guy has done it for what either
one guy has done it for two years, one guy
has done it for one year. He's been doing it
for twenty years, So I mean, I think that's insignificant.

(01:25:29):
You know, both of them have skilled players. You know,
both both of those skilled players. I personally, if I
were picking the place, I would pick Tampa over l
A because I would not want to play in the
a f C West. You know, you've got Patrick Maromes,
so I think arguably it's the best player in football.
You know that you're and you don't get to the

(01:25:50):
Super Bowl by coming in second in your division. You
know how many teams that didn't win the division have
won the Super Bowl? You know, very very few. You know,
you want to at least have at least one one
home game. You know, you'd like to have a buy obviously,
but you'd like to have at least one home game

(01:26:11):
to play three games on the road, to be to
win three games on the road to get to the
Super Bowl. The chances that happen are very, very slim. No,
I you know, I would. I would probably get away
from the AFC. I go to the NFC. I think
Tampa is a good situation. They you know, they have
a bunch of they have a large supporting cast of

(01:26:32):
coaches that are involved with the quarterback position. You know,
Tom Moore is around, Christiansen's around. If I were on left,
flances around bossarians around, you know. But at the end
of the day, at the end of the day, I
think they would tail and make that up. And you've
got stud wide receivers, you've had stud tight ends. I mean,

(01:26:53):
you're you're up and up and coming defense. I mean,
I think I would probably get out of the end
of a f C and go to the NFC. That's
what I personally would do. Now that being that being said,
you can look at look at the Chargers and sit
there and say, well, you know you're out in l A.
You got this new production company out there, You're you're

(01:27:14):
a California kid. You know, you know you're going into
this brand new stadium. You know, da da da da
da da. In both cases, he's gonna sell seats. You know,
both cases have a lot of empty seats that are
going to get filled up at the ends of signing them.
So you can count that pretty much, pretty even at
the end of the day. You know, I think he's

(01:27:35):
become an East Coast guy. You know, it would be
a lot easier going back and forth from Tampa, you know,
than going back and forth from l A. But um,
I think that these are two interesting candidates, and you know,
obviously somebody else can sneak in there and and steal
him away. But you know, I think that in both

(01:27:57):
these balt these team he has a chance. How big?
What do the Patriots do? Oh? I think regardless of
what they think of Stidham, what we don't know is
what they think of Stidham. You know, they might think
that Stidham is Tommy, you know, you know, he's he's
been sitting there waiting his turn, and they might think

(01:28:18):
he's the guy. But the fact that he's never been
put in that position, I think they go get themselves
a veteran quarterback, and the magnitude of who they get
will probably tell you whether or not that guy's coming
in to be the starter or that guy's coming in
to be to be a quality backup. You know, I

(01:28:39):
I've mentioned several times some guys, you know, Teddy Bridgewater
I had mentioned as as my second choice. It looks
like he's out of commission. You know. The guy who
I've mentioned, you know, multiple multiple times is sitting in
Cincinnati right now. I think I think Andy Dalton would
be a natural fit. You know, if they went and

(01:29:00):
got him, they have their starting guy, you know, when
Stone is ready to go. If if in fact that
time ever comes, then you placed at him. Um, how
hard will it be for cam Newton to find a
home considering you know, Bridgewater is going to Carolina? Obviously
some part of that is Joe Brady worked with them
in New Orleans. But it doesn't feel like Washington, who

(01:29:23):
has you know, members of the Carolina Panther staff. It
doesn't feel like they're opening for him. You've got a
guy who's had arm injuries and he's a runner, but
he's been banged up because of all the running, and
he's never been crazy accurate. Um, here's a former league
m v P. How hard do you think it will
be for him to find a starting job. Well, here's
the good news and the bad news. The good news

(01:29:44):
is you can get you as far as draft collateral.
You can get them cheap, right, you can get them cheap.
I mean you can go you know, offer a late
round pick and go ahead and get them. Okay, that's
the that's the good news. The bad news is if
you trade for him, you got that big contract that
you're gonna have to pay too, with all those question

(01:30:06):
marks you just said. But if Caroline was trying to
get anything for him a trade value, that's going out
the window because you know what what value. Everyone knows
you're dumping them. I mean, you're you're probably gonna end
up cutting them. You know, you're trying to get something
for him before he's out the door because you didn't
sign Teddy Bridgewater to be the backup, you signed him

(01:30:28):
to be the starter. Um, can you make headzard tails
of what Bill O'Brien is doing in Houston? Wow? Wow?
I mean that that that trade It was one of
the most absurd things I've ever heard. I mean, whether

(01:30:48):
you need a running back or not. I mean, this
isn't the fantasy football from three years ago when everyone
wanted David Johnson at the top of their fantasy football
teams three years ago. I mean this is this is
the real world. You picked up a big running back
contract for a guy who's really hasn't done much in
the last couple of years. Okay. And and in addition

(01:31:12):
to that, you give a fourth round draft choice, okay
to you know you give you give those those things
away for the you know the best, for you know,
one of the best receivers, you know, best best receivers
in football, if not the best. I mean, you kid

(01:31:35):
in me? And no, no first round draft choice is
coming here. You get a second round draft choice on this.
But are you kid in me? I can't really, I
mean the only thing I can think of is Arizona's
first round pick is too high. Right, So like all right,
a first round a second round as opposed to like

(01:31:56):
the Bill's first round. It's a couple of picks difference,
not that, but still, like you said, there's a difference.
This is an accomplished guy who's made plays in the playoffs.
He's widely considered and he's under contract for three more.
It's not like he's in it. He may want a
bigger deal, but you don't have to give him a
bigger deal. This one strikes me as an odd if

(01:32:18):
you just look at what happened with Buffalo and Minnesota
with Dicks, and look at the collateral that Minnesota got,
and you know, and I like stuff on Dicks, but
he's not DeAndre Hopkins. And then and look at the
value they got for Dicks. I mean, they get a one. Okay,

(01:32:39):
they get a one, they get a five, and a six,
they get back a seven, but they also get a
get a four next year or two. So they pick
up a one and three and and and basically basically
a couple of extra picks okay in exchange for Digs.

(01:32:59):
But Hopkins doesn't bring back a one. At least get
the one next year pro form. Then you know, if
you don't want they don't want to give it a
one this year, they'll give the one next year. I mean,
I just can't believe. And you know the other thing
I can't believe is the other teams around the league
that needed receiver allowed that to happen without going to

(01:33:20):
out and outbidding that one because there, you know, I mean,
if you needed a receiver, how could you not go
get him? I don't know. And maybe that's what let
us do today where Tom Brady said, hey, thanks, but
no thanks. I'm on my way out. Charlie, great stuff.
You can't wait to hear you tomorrow on Sirius s
x M. Always appreciate catching up. Say hi to your
family down there, and take care of those horses. Will

(01:33:41):
talk to you soon. Yeah, Stay safe, Stay safe out
there in the West Coast. Thanks Charlie. Charlie weis joining
us on The Doug Gottlieb Show. Be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug Gottlip Show weekdays at
three pm Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio, a app Doug Gotleive Show for
Sports Radio. Marshall new House a former Patriots playing with

(01:34:05):
the Patriots last year, currently in free agent. He'll join
us um as uh he liked the rest of us
is quarantine actually on his On his Twitter handle, he
calls himself Bobby Quarantino. Anyway, Marshall new House joins us
in mirror moments the I believe he's in Austin, Texas.
We'll get to that in a second. You know, here's

(01:34:26):
kind of the way to look at the Brady thing.
What what happens is we have a tendency to look
at the breakup, the divorce, if you will, how it ended,
and over the next six months we're probably going to
get all the true stories from each side's perspective on
how and why it all went down. I'm not I

(01:34:48):
understand what Charlie Weis is saying, which I was like,
you know, it doesn't really matter right now, it's all
going to come out. I also think it doesn't really matter.
It's all gonna come out because we all we have
to used to appreciate the twenty years of greatness that
we saw, right like the nine super Bowls did happen.

(01:35:10):
The crazy part about the twenty years, the nine super Bowls,
the six super Bowl wins, is that the best team
didn't win the super Bowl. That was the eighteen no
team thoroughly completely dominant um for the most part of
that season, and then the next year we that that
same team they try to run it back. Brady got
hurt so they didn't play. That was the Matt Castle

(01:35:32):
where they won eleven games with Matt Castle's quarterback. That
was the best team in the league if he's playing,
so we're robbed of what what could have been another
portion of the dynasty. Be sure to catch the live
edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm
Easter noon Pacific. All right, let's welcome to Marsha new House.
Joined just in the Doug gottli Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(01:35:55):
Marshall obviously played with Tom Brady with the Pats this year.
When you heard the news, what was your action? Thanks
for having me first of all, but yeah, I think
everyone else was just a little bit of a shock
of you weren't fully prepared to ever hear the words
Tom Brady is not going to be a Patriot or
wasn't gonna finish with the Patriots. Um, so, yeah, it's
a little bit of taken aback, and uh, you know,

(01:36:17):
trying to figure out what's next for him. Okay, but uh,
we're just trying to figure out, like was it. Charlie
Weis just joined us and he said, you know, he
had heard, he had made up his mind until yesterday.
And you know, some of those receivers and Austin Hooper
are getting that big deal that may have kind of
pushed him over the edge. Did you have any did
did you know that this was done before we all

(01:36:39):
felt found out it was done? No, I don't think
anyone did. I think you know he approached it, you know,
in a fair way of just like foun out the
best situation for his family and and his best chance
to win. But also you know, listen the first time
in phrases, so these are waters he hasn't technically been
in yet. Um, And there's a lot of give and take,
a lot of backwards and the ords um with the

(01:37:01):
team you're coming from, but also other teams that were
in play. So you know, who knows what would have
triggered him to altimately make that decision to kind of
cut um that part of the decision making off. Uh,
this is a new territory for everyone. My thought has
always been Martia new House joining us. You played for
a bunch of teams, you know, a bunch of different
offensive verbiage, right this the same place can be called

(01:37:23):
different things. Um, you know, all the different lingo can
be different. You had to absorb kind of on the
fly the Patriots offense, how difficult. Do you think it's
going to be for him to teach a young offensive
coordinator with either of those spots tample or or the
charges they're both inexperienced offensive coordinators. How hard is it
gonna be for him to teach them the offense and

(01:37:46):
for an entire franchise to absorb it in short order.
I don't think it'd be difficult. Just from like he said, schematically,
things are pretty similar across the league. What comes down
to the details, uh, and just you know Tom saying, hey,
I like us there as far as where he was
looking for a receiver in coverage, or where he's looking
at slack protection or you know, the game planning part

(01:38:06):
of it. So those are little details that will get
out in the off season, you know, whenever that may start,
um And, So to me, those are the spots that
you have to make up ground. But other stuff, I
think the guy who's experienced as an accomplished as Tom
and wherever he goes, you know, this is gonna be
a coach. Uh of the teatons. I've heard there's experience there,
so they'll figure out ways to kind of speed up

(01:38:28):
that process. Um And and to melt together as quickly
as possible. It's just gonna be the intricacies between he
and the coaching staff and he and the players have
actually around him. You've played with the I mean he
played with the Packers and the Bengals and the Giants,
and ELI and the Raiders and the Bills and the Panthers.
You pay with a bunch of teams, so you know

(01:38:49):
the differences in these quarterbacks, but also the differences in
their age. He wasn't great down the stretch. Some of
it was the personnel, you know, some of it was
your guys, you know, struggle in terms of the line play.
Some of the running backs weren't as good as in
Mohammed Sanus seems to struggle with some nagging injuries. That
trade didn't work. But but having seen so many of

(01:39:10):
these elite level quarterbacks and played with him, how much
do you think he has in the tank? There got
plenty left. That's a couple of team win and you know,
I'm just coming from that situation. You know, he build
us out of a lot of situations. And then there
were other parts where we you know, just short, we
were executing like we're used to executing. Um. But let's

(01:39:30):
not forget we're also clued before. We're in a position
just to make a playoff run. You know, we lose
in the playoffs and the Titans, but we were still
winning games. Uh, still executing not to the standard that
we were used to in the Patriots, but we're still
gonna be it done. And we're just waiting for that
moment for things to kind of kind of aligned and
everybody to be playing their best ball. And that just

(01:39:51):
never happened. That happens with that many people you're having
to get into concert. And so that kind of makes
you realize if he takes, for granted the sex best
we've seen it over years with Tom and the Patriots.
If you were to guess what he thinks the better
option Tampa the Chargers, Uh, well, there's a lot of
places that we could figure out what best means is

(01:40:13):
the best for his career, that best for him transitioning
from Paul do what we have, let's to play and
to the outside of that, um there's different um maaze
we can go about this. I think from a purely
whin now standpoint. Charges I think with the defense that
they have, uh have a lot going for him to
tough Division obviously with with my homes playing and coming

(01:40:35):
off the Super Bowl. Uh, that's a big move for
Tom and his family potentially across the country. So there's
a lot to be about that. Tampa is a team
that's kind of emerged the last few days. They've got
some pieces, um the division. You're gonna end up casing
Drew Breesis and now Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Ryan. So
there's not really an easy sledding. But I would pick
the Chargers um just based on what they can do

(01:40:58):
defensively and help him out with the weapons he would
be surrounded by. I agree with you. I think people
forget how good, how nasty Derwin James has went healthy
and then you know you got Ingram and uh and
and both getting after the quarterback martial new House joining
us on the Doug Gotlip Show. You are what's what
would generally be called the ranking file, right like, hey,
ranking file member Marshall Newhouse, which means you're not the superstar,

(01:41:21):
You're not getting the twenty five million guaranteed. You know,
you're an offensive lineman, the guy who's switched teams a
bunch of time. So supposedly this new c B a
is designed to help you. You were against the new
collective barting agreement. Why I voted no? UM, and that's
you know, I'd like the preface. It's by saying, um,
we lived in the world that's just kind of zero somewhere.

(01:41:42):
It's like there's either got to be a fully winner
and a fully losing reality. Especially with these negotiations we
are bargaining, we're truly having a gift sum and then
take some um and sometimes you know, those that levers
could swing both ways. But I voted no, and it
was it was strictly because while we do a larger
percentage of a pie and the owners, uh, what is

(01:42:03):
out there that they get done until they could have
every piece and negotiate with the forks. But there are
some things that I felt, the more meat on the
bone that were kind of slid under the rug a
little bit at I was thinking, Macar, I'm a older
I've been to the CBA back in two thousands ten.
There are things that I we're seeing that I thought
with long term uh hits two players and I get

(01:42:26):
while the younger rank and file guys who saw the
immediate bumps in minimum salaries and a few of the
benefits that we're getting in the largest piece of the pie.
But they you know, like sometimes the young guys can't
see the force with the trees. Now that being said,
I had a terrible deal. There was never an argument
that that the terrible deal. I don't never thought that
was the truth. It was just I felt like there

(01:42:46):
were we had more leverage and more plays that we
could gain versus the deal that was proposed. So what
what's what's the what's the hardest, what what's the part
you are most against? Uh that I was most it's well,
it's the seventeen game, honestly, if we're just putting it blunty,
and that's just the bargain ship of that was owners

(01:43:07):
presented and what you got back in return for giving
him that seventeen game. Not to mention the extra playoff
game to less team getting a first round by as
a player who has been through the sixteen games season
to realize how how much of a wreck your body
is in that sixteen game. So to think of it,
it's just money. Um has a lot of money for
the extra extra week of play, but that's a lot

(01:43:30):
of where and there on guys who then maybe have
to go on and try to go on a playoff
run and particilarly with one less chance for a buy. Uh.
And so to me that was just it didn't seemed
level enough. Uh. In my opinion, it's fascinating how it
went from a non starter with the with the players
ten years ago to a non starter to not not

(01:43:51):
have it in there with the owners, right, Like, how
did we how did that switch happen? Yeah, I mean
the outs came to the table and then it was
one of their chips that they labeled as nonnegotiable and
in negotiations, Um, you kind of have to have your
own set of non negotiables, things that you just you
your own buttonard or you want to perceive as not

(01:44:12):
being wanted, not wanting to budge on, and um, that
was their thing. I still don't think we had. We
had wonderful people in the PA Players Executive Committee. Um,
guys are proving definitely fighting for um the players as
a whole, and which was their job. But I just
don't think we had enough of a consensus on what
our non quote unquote non negotiable thing would have been.

(01:44:35):
And so yeah, it's okay to end and the end
relent on that seventeen game, but then get back or
forth to me, it's just sill that that Tugg Award
I've didn't take. Marcia Newhouse showing us in the Doug
Gotlips show on Fox Sports Tradio. Last thing, last thing.
You're still out there unsigned. What's it like to sit
there and wait? Like in kind of in limbo? How
are you? Not your first time, but obviously at some

(01:44:57):
point in time you get in your thirties, you start
to wonder, what's this? What's this been like? You're kind
of on lockdown. You know, you can't go to the
gym and throw a bunch of weight. You just gotta
sit there and wait and be on Twitter and figure
it out and talk to your rep. What's this like
for you? Well, I mean, luckily, I've been through enough
fredencies where I just kind of let a lot of
that go. I'm in contact with my agent UM. I

(01:45:19):
feel really really good about where I am. I'm at
peace with UM my career so far, and so I
definitely want to play and I put that out there
and it will be conversation with teams and not He's fine.
The first thing having to wait to me is not
that big a deal anymore. I used to stress be
the hell out. I'll be honest, the anxiety was through
the roof, and now I'm in a better place. I

(01:45:39):
tryd to handle it. Um. I know how to distract myself.
I've over here to collect some stuff I can work
out in my garage. I knew how to stay in shape.
I went to the first lockout and the level we're
off for five months, so that to me is also
something I've been through and that doesn't scare me uh
that much. So I know how to handle it. Um.
This is a good time, honestly, to be distracted by

(01:46:01):
your family. This is downtown. Normally are those teams that
should be reporting Gample six. So this is time that
you feel the clock ticket on the time where you
gotta report back. Instead, we should I earn the guys
that kind of time with your families, staying shape, but
just kind of you know, it's hard to relax with
the viral stuff point on the pandemic going on, But
use this time to mentally clear yourself infecially can emotionally

(01:46:25):
kind of prepare for what is unknown for a lot
of us, truly unknown realm of Marshall Newhouse. Marshall, thanks
so much for joining us on Fox Sports Radio. I
appreciate it. Thanks alright. Great insight from Marshall, a guy
who's on the front lines literally as a player, play
with Tom Brady, his sense of things and of course
his thoughts on the collective Barton agreement. Huge news in

(01:46:47):
the NBA regarding the coronavirus. I'll share that with you next.

time we get you updated on stories of the day,
and there are a lot of them. So, without further ado,

(01:47:07):
here's the press, the press, and by what do you got?
Doug will start off with the so much news, but
the news from the involving the Brooklyn Nets. Kevin Durant
one of four Brooklyn Nets to test positive for coronavirus.
He's one of three that has not had any symptoms.
He says he's feeling fine. In making that announcement to

(01:47:28):
the athletic the team did release the statement saying that
only one player right now is showing symptoms. Huh huh,
I just thought I thought, my um uh, which nets
are in isolation? These jokes right themselves is pretty amazing.
Brad Turner of the l A Times Yeah Go Ahead

(01:47:51):
is saying that the Lakers will be tested tomorrow. They're
just at a conference call and we'll have a fourteen
day self quarantine. Yeah. I mean it's important to mention,
like you're gonna sit there and go like, wait, why
went the Lakers tested well? One, no one had tested positive,
no one had felt bad or no one related to them.
But secondly, there were no tests available and they flew
when they they played the nets to night before and

(01:48:12):
then they all were at home when everything was canceled. Um.
They some of the guys asked for tests like, we
don't really have any available, So now they're obviously gonna
have to pay for a testing service to come and
test their guys. A couple of events being a postponed.
The French Open is moving from late May into June
to September twenty through October fourth. Kentucky Derby Manor it

(01:48:35):
official today. They will run on Labor Day weekend, Saturday,
September five. PGA Championship scheduled for mid May and San
Francisco has been postponed. They hoped to possibly play at
some point the summer, possibly at a Harding Park in
San Francisco, but the PGA of America doesn't know yet
if that's going to be feasible, And the PGA Tour
has canceled all events through May tent So those are

(01:48:59):
some boarding events that also have been moved because of coronavirus. Yeah, um,
I just even the rescheduling of things, like we just
don't know, Like I don't have a sports calendar in
front of me, but we just really have no idea, right,
we have no idea at all as to when we're

(01:49:19):
gonna start playing and what the world's gonna look like,
do you no? And and September seems to be like this,
this unbelievable month where you could just jam in golf majors,
Tennis major's, horse racing's Triple Crown open up, the NFL
season have caught Like is that feasible? Like is that

(01:49:40):
even feasible to have? You know, I know some of
them are worldwide events, but I just, yeah, I don't know.
I ain September to remember, it could be for all
of the events that could be moved to that month. Yeah,
I mean it sounds amazing, and September is like my
favorite month because of weather as well as well as
all the normal sporting events. But it it just sounds

(01:50:01):
like we're gonna have too much, and I continue to
wonder what the rest of the sports calendar will look like,
not just this year, but in years to come, how
much this will change. So you talked a lot about
Tom Brady, but of course he announced today that he
will not be back with the New England Patriots next season.
Other quarterbacking news in the NFL, let's starting Carolina, where

(01:50:21):
it seems like the Panthers are gonna sign free age
the quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a three year deal, allowing
Cam Newton to seek a trade. But before the or
after the Panthers tweeted that out, Cam tweeted, quote, stop
with the word play. I never asked for it. Please
don't try and play me or manipulate the narrative and
act like I wanted this. You forced me into this
end quotes. Yeah, obviously he wasn't on board, which is

(01:50:42):
it's a mistake. They they should have gone to him
and said Hey, we're gonna put this out there, beyond
board with it. It'll help you out. But there is
obviously some animus which is created, which I don't think
Cam wants to leave because I don't think he feels
like there's another possible home. He has equity there. He's
led them to a super Bowl, he's been an m
v P. That's his I think he's gonna struggle to

(01:51:04):
start find a starting job, really do. And I think
he knows that Philip Rivers has a starting job. It's
gonna be in Indianapolis, getting a one year deal. We're
twenty five million dollars to play for the Colts. I'm
I'm intrigued by this one. Obviously he knows everybody in
the offensive side of the ball. They have a really
good offensive line. I'm a big Philip Rivers fan. You're

(01:51:24):
playing indoors, a guy who's losing arm strength and a
guy who needs a good offensive line. He gets he
gets both bolstered by this move. But is it enough
and they don't have great like do they have great
skilled position dudes? I think the answer is no. I'm
not really sure this makes them that much better. Veteran
Tanna and Jason Witness agreed to terms on a one
year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Has there ever been,

(01:51:50):
and there's never been, There's been one Monday night football guy.
But like to have two full running night football analysts
on the same team, one playing when coaching is fascinating.
I tweeted, they're looking at signing Lisa Salters and Booger
McFarland's very nicely, nicely done. The Dolphins and running back
Jordan Howard agreed to terms on a two year deal

(01:52:10):
as he leaves Philadelphia. Another player leaving Philadelphia safety Malcolm Jenkins,
as the team will not pick up his option. Yeah,
Philly is a weird team, right, and they they overpaid
so massively after winning, but you know, before they got
to a Super Bowl then winning a Super Bowl and
kind of smoke in mirror has been able to get
into the playoffs. But I just are they really that good?

(01:52:32):
But then you look around that division, you're like, well,
the Giants are gonna be that good next year, and
the Redskins are gonna be good next year. Cowboys, they're
losing defensive pieces galore, so they keep their offense but
lose their defense. I don't I get, I I get,
I get what Philadelphia is doing. I just don't. And
they did win the division. I just don't know if
they're actually any good. The what brothers are getting together?

(01:52:55):
Not J J. Watts, but Derek and t J will
now be playing together in Pittsburgh. Derek Watt fullback signing
with the Steelers. What's up? Well, you saw them. They're
on their a TV commercial now, yes, yeah? Is it?
Is it? Subway? Is that? Is that? What it is? Is? Uh?
They're all they're all loaded up in the back of

(01:53:15):
the the suv with their mom with a huge, strong
Wisconsin accent. And that commercial you can hear that as well. Now,
speaking of the Steelers, on backer Ryan Chaser's retiring, the
team placed him on the reserve retired list, which I
can't believe this didn't happened previously. I would guess there
was some salary captainfications. Look, Ryan Chas, he's never gonna

(01:53:35):
play football again. It's amazing though that it looks like
he's already walking period. But you know, he may walk
smoothly without any sort of pronounced limp, which is just
a testament to the type of person he is. A
couple of other signings just to pass along. We'll wrap
it up with that. Robert Quinn leaves the Cowboys on
a five year deal, the defensive end going to the
Chicago Bears on a contract worth seventy million dollars. Jaguar

(01:53:58):
sign linebacker Joe Shoulbert to a five year deal. He
was formerly of the Cleveland Browns. Former Packers tackle Brian
Blockett going to the Los Angeles Chargers on a three
year deal worth about thirty million dollars to help their
offensive line. Of course, that did the trade Turner trade
earlier this soft season. So the Chargers whoever is going
to be their quarterback? Trying to bolster up that offensive line. Yeah,

(01:54:20):
that much improved offensive line, and still have the six
pick in the draft, and so if they don't get
Tom Brady, they can use that pick for a quarterback
and there should be a good one available. Chargers have
a pretty obvious plan, a Plan B, and I think
a plan C as well. Get out there and pressed.
That was the press. So the show starts at three
o'clock Eastern, twelve o'clock Pacific tomorrow, Ryan Music, do you

(01:54:43):
believe Tom Brady will have chosen a team by then
I'm gonna go with no no Buyer. Yes, I think
so too. It's not because Ryan, because Buyer is always right,
he has tended to be right. It's not why, just
well that should be your reason. I just think he
wants to get this thing done and get on with it.

(01:55:05):
You know, Um, there's a lot of work to be done,
even if you can't necessarily be there, even's virtual work.
I just you know he's not You're not gonna make
visits down so you know who the teams are, Pick
a team and be done with it. I think that's it.
You all, you also have closed the door on New England,
so you gotta get your deal done so that team
can also then move on and do stuff as well.

(01:55:26):
Correct correct, which I think it's reason Moneybody's like, well,
you know it's Tom Brady. You gotta wait for us, Like, yes,
you wait, but you can't hold a team hostage. That's
just not right and that's not the way that Tom
wants to do business. So I think he's gonna pick
a team. You know. Look, people are saying, Tampa, I
think it's the charges. I think it just makes a
lot more sense in terms of where you live branding
and superstars come to l a we'll see tomorrow. Download
