Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
All Right, it is official. It is Draft Day that
will be live from Green Bay. We are live in
Los Angelus. It's the Herd. Wherever you may be in
however you may be listening. Thanks for making that's part
of your day. So this is you know, we all
love this day. This is a really fun day for us,
(00:47):
right j Max will start with the Warriors because for
a couple of reasons, the Sherry series may have shifted
last night app so we thought Houston would win. We
said they couldn't play words. Take Houston yesterday on the show.
Easy Winner, Easy Winner. Take the Rockets. They're gonna win.
But it's how they won. So the NBA officials, the
(01:07):
refs have decided throughout the playoffs and especially in this series,
we're gonna let them play. Now, that's not a huge surprise.
We talk about this on a regular basis. Reffs let
them play in the postseason. That's a big edge, however,
to Houston because they really let them play last night.
They're longer, deeper, stronger, more physical, and once Jimmy Butler
(01:29):
got hurt, well, the Warriors were a sub five hundred
team before Jimmy Butler. So Steph Curry and a bunch
of role players not gonna work. And it's not just
Jimmy Butler's scoring or his playmaking. It's the reality is
they can just go after Steph Curry. All you have
to do is rough him up, grab him, hold him.
They're nobody else that can score consistently. So it makes
(01:51):
the Warriors a completely limited team. It's not just the
scoring and playmaking, the physicality of Jimmy Butler. The Warriors,
we know this. They're not deep, I said for the series.
If they're not gonna play Jonathan Kaminga, they're small and
not athletic enough. And you take Jimmy Butler out, he's
kind of the enforcer on that team. With Draymond Green,
the difference is he'd take some of the scoring pressure
(02:13):
off Curry. So right now the NBA officials are swallowing
the wishle whistles. It is the lowest free throw rate
in NBA playoff history. Now, if you're the Celtics or
the Rockets or the Calves Oklahoma City and you're deep,
that's okay. You can miss a star. Jason Tatum a
(02:36):
great players out Celtics, don't miss a beat. Jimmy Butler
out of the thin small Warriors is a series changer.
So and I again we said this before. Jimmy Butler.
It's just Curry and role players. So we have to
wait for the test results. But if they're saying Butler's
(02:57):
out for the next two games, the series is over.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
I full disclosure. I picked the Rockets anyway. I thought
it was a bit of a cheap shot by a
men Thompson who has a reputation. He did this to Jannis,
he did this to Tyler hero. His reputation precedes him.
This is what he does. A very athletic, physical player.
He was going after Butler. And by the way, Draymond
gets guys worked up. But it's not like you know,
(03:20):
when people used to criticize Draymond Green Draymond Green had
a reputation and he still does before he gets into
the arena. Aman Thompson is their physical, tough guy. He's
the guy that's gonna make things. He's gonna play that line.
I thought it was a little cheap. I would have
no problem if he got suspended for a game in
the series. However long Jimmy Butler's out year out, which
is probably gonna be a game, but the NBA has
(03:43):
decided we're gonna let everybody play, and so that means
if Butler's not there, the Warriors have been reduced to
Steph skirt. Steph Curry scores forty points or we lose. Now,
Jalen Green's not gonna shoot like that on most nights.
He is a hit and miss player. You can look
at his last eight games. You don't know what you're
getting with Jayalen Green. He had a great performance that
(04:04):
could go down to nine points in his next outing.
So again, Houston came in with their coach, former Celtics coach.
We're gonna get after him physically. They're not going to
come into our house and go up two oh. So
there was an absolute game planned by aman Thompson Jalen Green.
It was be hyper aggressive. We have a deeper roster,
(04:25):
and it worked. It doesn't affect the Celtics who played
without Jason Tatum. You can't take Butler out of the
Warriors and the series is over and here's Steve Kerr.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
And you just respond and react with what you have
to do in terms of, you know, making a sub
and trying to think about new substitution patterns, who you
want to pair together, all that kind of stuff. So
obviously feel terrible for Jimmy. Hopefully he's okay, and.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
You know, it's funny. It's not like what amn Thompson did.
I'm all worked up about. I mean, I I spent
a lot of my years watching Kurt Rambis get tackled
by the Pistons. If the seventies and eighties basketball was
allowed today, you'd have fans rushing on the court. But
I do think the NBA has always protected stars, just
(05:14):
like the NFL change rules to protect stars. This to
me is one where I would have no problem saying,
as long as Butler's out, you're out. It wouldn't bother
me at all. Probably not gonna happen, But remember, leagues
do this it's not hard to figure out. In the
NFL rules you can't touch the quarterback. Well, the NBA
has always been a star driven league, even more than
(05:34):
the NFL. So I think Butler maybe misses a game,
but that's again, they're not gonna win because you just
only have one outlet after staff and the Rockets have
figured it out without Butler on the floor clutch and grab,
Curry push, grab, and the refs are letting it go.
So it's a really disadvantage for the Warriors the way
(05:54):
the officials are letting the Rockets a much deeper team play.
It's surprising the Rockets. We're so ill equipped in Game one.
Here's imay Aduka on the Rockets chippy play.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
That's who we are, you know, that's our identity for
the most part. So like I said, from you know,
start of the playoffs, we don't have to flip the
switch and try to get tougher, try to get more aggressive.
That's kind of what we built everything on, and so
that carries over the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
We understand that.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
If they let us play both teams, it's in our
favor for the most part. Golden State as well as
physical you just have to play through it. You can't
expect it on one end and cry about it on
the other. And so if it gets chippy we've seen
over the last two years, you know that works in
our favor for the most part, gets us amped up.
But when you have a lead up twenty and things
start to happen, you understand why, and that's kind of
(06:42):
the last resort.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Okay, So the way the league is officiating the playoffs,
they're letting even more go than I suspected. Big advantage Celtics, Calves,
OKC in Houston, really deep athletic teams. Okay, So there's
a story that Shanor Sanders is really slipping in the draft,
could go twenty one to the Steelers. I will, by
(07:04):
the way, in forty five minutes, fifty minutes, I will
have my final mock draft. This is not what I
would do. This is what I believe happens in the
first round of the draft, first fifteen pick, So forty
five minutes from now, my prediction on what I think
the first fifteen picks will look like. So this is
a very very weak draft. So if Schadur Sanders is
(07:26):
falling in the draft, you know it's pretty obvious that
Shadur Sanders is not lighting the world up. There's also
Team Act. The receiver out of Arizona I am told,
is also falling in the draft for separate reasons. But
here's my thing about Shaudeur sliding to Pittsburgh. I would
rather go to Pittsburgh at twenty one than Cleveland or
the Giants with a second or third pick. I really
would ownership stability, roster composition, and a patient franchise. The
(07:51):
Steelers have dk Metcalf, They'll trade the other receiver. They
have a very good tight end, Arthur Smith, more than
capable at OC. It's a very good roster. I'd rather
go there. Dan Marino fell in the draft to Hall
of Fame coach Don Shula. Do you realize that the
Jets could have picked him with Joe Walton as a
head coach earlier. Do you think he would have ended
(08:11):
up having Dan Marino's career. Patrick Mahomes went tenth that year.
If he would have gone second, he would have gone
to the Chicago Bears. Andy Reid was not coaching the
Chicago Bears. You start looking at when Aaron Rodgers fell
to Green Bay. You know where he could have gone
Mike Tice Minnesota or Mike Nolan, who wore a suit
(08:35):
on the sidelines for San Francisco. Would that have been better? So?
I think with the current NIL model, the fact that
your dad's de On Sanders, you were making seven figures
in college, play the long game, I would rather go
down ten draft picks twelve draft picks to a better franchise.
Dan Marino Aaron Rodgers are the two legendary drops in
(08:57):
the first round. Yourself this Jordan Love. The Packers moved
up for Jordan Love. That worked out pretty well for him,
didn't it. If you could go to the Green Bay
Packers or twenty three other teams in the NFL, who
would you choose?
Speaker 6 (09:13):
So?
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I think we talked about this where you land matters now.
I have my issues with the Steelers, Mike Tomlin, defensive coach,
defensive culture. If they have a bad year, I think
they could. You know, Mike Tomlin's not going to be
around forever so and he'll get a TV job and
a heartbeat. But with the NIL model and college kids
coming out with some money in the bank and your
(09:34):
dad's Dean Sanders, I would have I would much rather
go to a stable ownership group. All this short term money,
it doesn't matter as much anymore, at least for quarterbacks.
I mean, at these top twenty football programs, everybody's getting money.
Tight ends are getting money, right, tackles are getting money.
(09:55):
Safeties are getting money in college football. So it's the
advantage to that is not not only short term for
the players being able to, you know, afford a nice
car or something, but you can take a deep breath
and not be emotionally tight in the knots if you drop.
Because if he went to Cleveland or New York, Shador
Sanders has to play immediately and he is the savior.
(10:16):
He's not the savior in Pittsburgh. That's not what he
would be. He would be the starting quarterback. The franchise
doesn't need saving. It needs improvement, but it doesn't need saving.
Cleveland needs saving. The Giants need everything, including saving. So
that's where we are today. Land Zerline was on yesterday,
(10:36):
worked for NFL dot Com cover the NFL for twenty years,
talked about just this quarterback class not very good compared
to last year's.
Speaker 7 (10:46):
From a comparison, it's it's terrible. It's not even close
to last year's Obviously, Schador's going to go into first
this year. He would have gone maybe in the second
round last year, maybe even in the third round, because
teams don't like they don't like drafting players in the
second round. There's only been six quarterbacks drafted in the
second round over the last ten years, thirty five first
(11:06):
rounders and fourteen third rounders. So it's like that's a
line of demarcation. You're either a starter or you're a backup.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
So the odds continued to suggest that Shadeur Sanders will
slide down to twenty one and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Again,
I don't think it's the worst thing in the world.
The two most famous slides, Dan Marino and Aaron Rodgers
went to good coaches and stability, and now Shadur comes out.
(11:38):
Dad's a legend. Nil money. So what I mean there
are guys now in college staying in college for another year.
We're seeing this. I mean, Carson Beck's like, I could
get drafted in the sixth round. I can go to
Miami and make ten million dollars. So I just I
think the nil has changed it. It's so what you drop,
what you don't want to do is go to a
(11:58):
franchise that is a mess. And we all know about
eight to ten of these franchises are a mess. All right,
There's about eight greatly well run franchises, another six to
seven who are mostly on a consistent basis solid. Then
there's fifteen messes. J Mack, I'm gonna do in forty
(12:20):
five minutes. My am a mock draft.
Speaker 8 (12:24):
Colin Wait, wait, the Steelers are not a mess. A
franchise that hasn't known offense for the last I don't
know six.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Years, that's not a mess.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
The most expensive defense or one of the most expensive
defensive rosters in the league.
Speaker 9 (12:36):
Yes, haven't won a playoff game in forever.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
They need it. They're not a mess. No, they need adjustments.
A mess has been the Titans a mess before. C J.
Speaker 8 (12:45):
Stroud network playoff wins in the last five years in
the Steelers.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
But the Steelers draft better, better roster composition, more stability
and ownership, front office coaching. Yeah, I mean it's again,
Pittsburgh has underachieved relative to their division. I'm not denying that.
But they do get to the playoffs. That's not a mess.
So that's the bar just getting well, No, you're not
(13:10):
a mess. If you're getting to the playoffs now, now,
I mean they win more. Think about this, They win
more regularly than the Niners. Go look at even with
Kyle Shanneth. The Niners good year bad, You're good year bad,
You're good year bad year. The Rams win almost every year.
The Steelers win almost every year. They do win every
(13:31):
year in the regular season. So my take is the
Steelers aren't a mess, They're just not again relative to
the top teams in the league. They are still too
defensive minded.
Speaker 9 (13:42):
And I love this whole Scheduur narrative.
Speaker 8 (13:44):
Let's just remember everybody, the league has no clue how
to draft quarterbacks. Let's just get that out there first
and foremost. Okay, Trey Lance going second, Zach Wilson's second,
Patrick Mahon's sliding behind Mitch Trubisky.
Speaker 9 (13:57):
The league doesn't know what they're doing with the quarterbacks.
Maybe good he could be Drew Brees. I think accurate
as hell.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Yeah, No, I think Shador is going to be a
nice NFL quarterback. I do good B plus quarterback in
the league, I do. I think he's more talented. I
think he's absolutely more talented than Dak Prescott. I think
he's more talented than brock Perty. I think he's more
talented than JJ McCarthy, who everybody loved last year. I
think he's more talented. So I think he's a talented kid.
I don't think he's a star, and I don't think
(14:24):
he's an a prospect.
Speaker 9 (14:25):
He's got some growing up to do. But is Kyler
Murray a star? He's got growing up to do. He
hasn't want anything. I don't know if Kyler Murray's.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
A good I think if you ask most GMS today
Kyler Murray, all things considered, including his contractor Shauduur, you'd
take Shaduur. Yeah, yeah, because you know, I mean that's
part of it.
Speaker 8 (14:42):
So again, how about this, Can Shadeur be a top
fifteen quarterbacks?
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Yes, with the right landing spot, yes, I believe. So
top ten probably not.
Speaker 9 (14:53):
There were moments where Kirk Cousins was a top ten
quarterback in the league, fringe top ten, but top ten.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (14:58):
Dak Prescott mid round quarterback was a.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Yeah again when he had the right components to the roster. Yes,
I think if Sugar goes to the right play, I mean,
the Steelers star receiver, really good tight end they lost
their left tackle, a Najie Harris, but it's a great
running back draft, so they're drafting another running back.
Speaker 8 (15:15):
Which star receiver were talking about, the one who unfollowed
the Steelers on Instagram this week?
Speaker 9 (15:21):
Oh Pickens, it never stops.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
All right, we got a lot of stuff coming up
Joel Clatt today as well live in La It's the Hurt.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon easternn AM Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS
one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
All right, here we go, Joel Klatten, my mock draft.
It is our number two. It is great to have
you in. It is the Herd. Wherever you may be
and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us
part of your day. I don't think the NBA is
going to suspend Iman Thompson. I don't, but I'm saying
based on his resume, the violence of that move. Jimmy
(15:55):
Butler's a star. Do you think Do I think they'll
have a meeting today and talk about it. Yeah, you know,
it is what it is. All I know is the
NBA is letting guys play, and it is a huge
edge to the deep Celtic to the Deep Thunder, the
Deep Rockets, the Deep Caves like Golden State without Jimmy
Butler may not win another game in this series.
Speaker 9 (16:16):
Well they're not. Come on, they're not gonna get dusted
without Butler.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
They were sub five hundred without.
Speaker 8 (16:20):
Semski was sick and he could He was like, ohver
five couldn't do anything.
Speaker 9 (16:23):
They'll still be fine.
Speaker 8 (16:25):
I don't know that they'll win the series, but yeah,
I would take Rockets in seven if Butler misses a game.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
By the way, I'm not anti Rockets. I took the
Rockets to win the series. I'm just saying the men
Thompson's resume, his history, he has been you know, he
grew up legendary stories in Houston. You know, he and
his dad, his brother, they'd play all day and they
were feisty in fight, and there's all these stories about
a men's history. He's a tough kid. I love having
guys like that. But Draymond Green was always judged more harshly,
(16:53):
and I think fairly based on his career. Resume.
Speaker 8 (16:56):
To your point, what if the league says, hey, you
see that Warriors Lakers matchup, Boy, we love that. Let's
sit on men Thompson for a game, so we can
get Curry Lebron next round. Because you know, the executives
are dancing in the streets over these ratings so far.
Speaker 9 (17:11):
Wait until they get Lebron Curry in the next round.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Yeah right, he's have been good. Okay, now I did it.
I do two mock drafts. The first one is what
I would do, which is just for fun. You can
hold me accountable. The second one is this is what
I think is going to happen. So I was on
the phone last night, yesterday afternoon, in this morning, there
was a lot of Bears rumors, but the reality is
(17:34):
about Ashton genty. But again, to make a trade work,
a lot of teams want things. I'm told the Jacks
want to go get Travis Hunter. Well what do we get, right? Like,
what do we get for it? So there's a lot
of conversations, there's a lot of calls. Very rarely do
you get moves in your top ten picks, but there's
a lot of calls in it. So here is what
I'm hearing. Here is what I believe will happen. Number
(17:58):
one cam Ward This is easy one good fit with
Brian Callahan's offense, and more than anything, he is a
major talent upgrade over who the Titans played at quarterback
last year. Last year, Tennessee's quarterbacks combined for twenty two
touchdowns and twenty one picks. This is a no brainer.
Number two, most talented athlete in the draft. I think
(18:20):
a historically gifted athlete, Travis Hunter, goes to Cleveland. They
are getting calls on Travis Hunter, and not just one
they're going to I believe keep him. He's a very
unique maybe not a show Heyo Tony, maybe he is,
but just not a lot of guys ever like this.
So he goes number two. I think the New York
(18:42):
Giants are gonna go get Abdul Carter. It is a
starless draft, and he is one of the four or
five stars in the draft. Listen, They've already got a
very good defensive line, but what a lot of teams do.
Best player available, and there's no question at this point
he's the best player available. Patriots go offensive tackle Will
(19:03):
Campbell LSU. Reality is they have the worst hole line
in the league. They can get running backs, tight ends
and wide receivers elsewhere, there's only four or five oh
tackles that people really really like. Maybe fewer than that
Will Campbell. You got Drake May, now you got to
protect him. Number five, the Jaguars go for one of
(19:23):
the cleaner players in the draft, Mason Graham. They could
not stop the run last year. And by the way,
they've got tray Von Walker and josh Heinz Allen, so
he's a nice combo in there, and their defensive line
will be set for years. So I think Mason Graham's
a play that I love Mason Graham, and a lot
of it is I watch so much Michigan football and
Big ten football. Every game I watched, he won the
(19:46):
battle against any offensive linemany face. Number six the Raiders.
I believe they're going to get Ashton gent Listen. They
need a receiver and they need a running back. And
Pete Carroll is old school. He likes to create a
run game. He had his most success with Marshawn Lynch
and the Pros and Reggie Bush and Lendale White in college.
(20:07):
They need him. I think this is a really unique
running back first round. Town. Number seven, the Jets go
for Tyler Warren. Listen, I know they have a defensive coach.
They don't have enough weapons, so Garrett Wilson needs some protection.
I saw Warren play at USC and catch seventeen balls.
He's not brock Bowers, but he's got so much dexterity
(20:30):
and so much versatility. I don't think the Jets can
pass on him. They're just not a very Jets get
no tight end production. He solves it for the next
five years. Number six the Panthers Jaylon Walker. I mean again,
it's another Georgia pass rusher. He was like a five
star recruit. High pipe pipe, pipe pipe. Sometimes he lives
up to it, sometimes he does not. But again, in
(20:53):
a super starless draft, he's a good pass rusher from Georgia.
They generally work out. Okay. Nine the Saints, they could
use offensive line help. I think they go with mikel
Williams from Georgia. Again, they didn't have a good defense
last year. They got to rebuild their offensive line. But
this feels like best player available. And again, these Georgia guys,
(21:14):
it doesn't matter if they underachieve a little or they
got some character stuff. They come into the NFL. They
can play, and so that's where I think he goes.
Number ten the Bears. They would love a star running back.
I think the Bears are gonna get will Johnson the corner. Listen,
they got Jalen Johnson on one side. This is a
team that's spent a ton of money on offense over
the last two years. They need to get cheap on defense.
(21:37):
I think he's a very good corner. They have to
upgrade their secondary. And remember they spent money. They're spending
money right now in their own line, in their D line.
They're spending money in the trenches. They got wide receivers.
You can get a running back later. Go get the
best corner. He didn't run a four to three. He's
an excellent corner in a division with smart offensive coaches.
(22:00):
Number eleven niners, I think they get Kelvin Banks left tackle.
Trent Williams is thirty seven. They lost two offensive linemen
a free agency. Aaron Banks obviously went to Green Bay
and Jalen Moore went left tackle backup actually went to
the Chiefs. So listen, if you're gonna spend money on
Brock Purdy, who's had a couple of injuries already, you
(22:20):
gotta protect him. I think this, in my opinion, is
the best offensive lineman in the draft. Number twelve Cowboys,
Omaro Hampton. Listen, folks, they don't have enough offensive firepower.
Jerry likes stars. He wanted to draft Johnny Manzel at
one point and they talked him out of it. This
kid is Joe Mixon with a better burst. Why not.
(22:43):
I mean again, if you're gonna spend money on Dak Prescott,
you gotta get him weapons, and you got one right
now in Ceedee Lamb. I think they go big. It's exciting,
it's explosive, and Jerry'll loved the attention. I think number
thirteen we have our first trade up. I think the
Rams trade up with Miami. Miami moves back. The Rams
(23:06):
trade up and get Colston lovelin the tight end. They
tried to move up last year for brock Bowers. It
was too rich. So they're just not getting enough tight
end production. So the feeling with the Rams is they've
got DeVante Adams and Puka. They've got Kyron Williams the
running back. The old line is settled. Let's go get
(23:29):
a star tight end for Matt Stafford this year and
next his last couple of years with the Rams. They
move up, Dolphins move back number fourteenth pick the Colts
will take, in their eyes, the best player available. Armand
Membo from Missouri guys a monster. The reality is outside
of Quentin Nelson, nobody else played seventeen games on the
(23:51):
old line for the Colts. Chris Ballard will be patient,
He'll let the best player fall to him. And then
number fifteen the Falcons take Jahadka. Now, the Falcons the
last four draft, they've gone offense in the first round.
That's why their defense is not very good. So Michael
Pennix is fine. The O line's fine, they got Kyle Pitts,
they got Drake London, Bijon Robbinson. Their offense is fine.
(24:13):
They need to be faster and more athletic on defense.
And Campbell. Campbell's an underrated player. Most BAMMA players are
not underrated guys an unbelievable freak athlete, best linebacker in
the draft. Probably. So this is what I think will happen. Okay,
this isn't what I would do. This is what I
(24:34):
believe will happen. I do think the Rams will move up.
I think they'll wait as long as they can. But
I think the Colts would take Colston Loveland if he
was available, and the Rams know that, so they're going
to jump the Colts at the last second to get
a tight end, who, by the way, everybody loves. If
(24:54):
he was available, I can tell you the Broncos would
look at him, the Chargers would look at him, and
the Rams would take him. So I do think in
the Rams don't have a lot of need. They need
at some point an offensive tackle, a corner, a tight end,
and maybe an inside linebacker.

so you know everybody's saying it's not a good enough
draft to move up, But I tend to believe that
these offensive coaches, when they see a unique piece like
(26:14):
a Colston Loveland, they're like, oh, that worked.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Now.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
A defensive coach, maybe not, but you did a ton
of Colston Loveland games.
Speaker 5 (26:21):
What did you see.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
I love Colston Loveland. I have him as my top
tight end in the draft. And the reason here's the reason.
I really like Tyler Warren as well. But they're different
types of players. You know, Warren exploit space that is
created through scheme, and he does it incredibly well. He's
a creative player. But Loveland creates his own space and
that's difficult to do. And by the way, he produced
(26:45):
with subpar quarterback play this last year before getting hurt
at Michigan. You know, you look at the way that
he runs routes from split out from in line, all
over the place, and he wins. And by the way,
there's there's this miss that Tyler Warren is somehow way
bigger than Colston Loveland. They're basically the exact same size.
(27:07):
I think Loveland might be like five pounds lighter, but
they're the same height. I love Loveland's ability to get
open and to me at the next level, in particular
in the red zone and on third down from a
tight end perspective, can you create your own space and win?
Speaker 5 (27:21):
And Loveland can do that.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
Okay, So there's another player that you saw a ton
of in the Big Tenemika Buka, the wide receiver. He's
not a burner, but I went to dinner with an
offensive coordinator this past weekend. They're not going to draft
him because of need. They loved him, he said, total
pro starts day one. So again, this is a guy
that when you looked at a lot of mock drafts,
he was top of the second round. I'm sorry, but
(27:45):
I have yet to talk to any source who didn't
love him. Character, toughness, You did a ton of Buckeye games.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
What is he?
Speaker 1 (27:54):
What do you see?
Speaker 6 (27:56):
He's my favorite player in the draft because of all
the things that you just talked about. He's one of
the greatest young men that I've covered just as a person,
but he's also incredibly polished as a wide receiver. And
this is what you also have to realize is that
you've got to project from college systems into the NFL.
And what position group in college football has been more
(28:19):
dynamic and more can't miss than Ohio State wide receivers
in the last five or six years. Colin, it's the
best position group in college football in terms of projecting
to the National Football League. And a Mecca a Buka
is a great player. He can play in the slot.
He's explosive, he runs clean routes. He is a great
locker room guy. He catches everything. And here's one of
(28:41):
the things and something that I'll share it tonight when
we get on the air. This will just tell you
everything about his character and what they believe in at
Ohio State in that position room with Brian Hartline as
their coach, Jeremiah Smith was going to come in as
a true freshman and a Mecca Abuka stayed back and
he wanted to play an extra year, not just for
himself and to win a championship and so on and
(29:02):
so forth, but he wanted to make sure that Jeremiah
Smith had a connection to the lineage of the brotherhood
of all the guys that are going to the National
Football League so that you can say that, yeah, it starts,
you know, all the way back Terry McLaurin and Paris
Campbell and then Chris o'lave and then Garrett Wilson and
Jackson Smith and Jigba and then Marvin Harrison and a
Mecca Buca and Jeremiah Smith. He understood the links in
(29:26):
that chain and wanted to stay back and mentor Jeremiah Smith,
who might be better than all of them here in
a couple of years. And that's one of the reasons
he stayed back in Columbus.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
So you know, I've said this before. Dan Marino and
Aaron Rodgers famously dropped in the draft and they got
Green Bay and Don Shula with nil money. Now it
doesn't bother me at all. If I if I had
a son and you told me Cleveland the Giants are
the Steelers, I'd say, drop in the draft and go
to Pittsburgh. I don't love what they're doing, but they're
(29:58):
really well run. They draft and developed players. So if
Shador is dropping, he's not going to be a savior
in Pittsburgh. They're just looking for a starting quarterback. The
Giants in Cleveland are looking for somebody to get him
out of messes. What do you make of the reports
that he's dropping.
Speaker 5 (30:14):
They're true.
Speaker 6 (30:15):
First of all, I think it's fifty to fifty that
Pittsburgh takes him. I know that their visit went really well.
And there's also this this I won't call it an issue,
but there's this point that no one is making. Everyone's
just talking about from the NFL perspective and the decision
(30:38):
maker's perspective. And I will say this, Remember, Chador has
only played for his dad his whole life. Yeah, Colin,
I think sometimes we forget that, like Little League Gone,
the only head coach he's known is coach Prime. And
so I think that there is some thought in the
(31:00):
Sanders camp that it's not only about the organizational fit
but the head coaching fit. And I know that they
would love to play for Mike Tomlin. So you know,
however that happens, I think that that's probably the place
that Shudor would like to end up for all of
(31:21):
the reasons you were talking about.
Speaker 5 (31:23):
And this idea of the alpha.
Speaker 6 (31:26):
Head coach who's who's hyper confident and very successful, runs
a clean program, I think that that's attractive for the
Sanders camp as well, and that's something that not a
lot of people have talked about.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
So I had a general manager tell me it's a
starless draft, and Abdull Carter's a star. Somebody's going to
take him high. You did Micah Parsons games at Penn State,
you did Abdul Carter games. Is he in that class?
Is he as good as Micah?
Speaker 6 (31:54):
I think he can be because think about it, Micah.
You know, Micah's dynamic, and he's creative, and he can
play everywhere. I think as an off the ball linebacker,
you can make an argument Micah is the better player.
Speaker 5 (32:08):
But I think as a pure edge rusher, I think
Abduall Carter is better.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
I think he's a touch longer and a little bit
more explosive in terms of his get off and pass
rushing acumen. So as creative as Dallas can be, with Michaeh.
Parsons as good as he is, there's this in my mind.
I think that as a pass rusher and a disruptive
force behind the line of scrimmage, that Abduall Carter could
maybe even be better than what Micah has been in
(32:33):
the National Football League. And listen, that's high praise. Obviously,
because I hold micah and as maybe the best defender
in the sport right now. But Abduall Carter has that ability,
and I would just remind people he's only played edge
rusher for one season. Last year was the first time
that he moved down and played edge kind of full
(32:54):
time and then moved him around a little bit. But
you looked at him getting better and better and better
all year, and then with one arm against Notre Dame
in that CFP game, he had seven pressures and was
a game wrecker against Notre Dame. You know, to me, like,
this guy's a no brainer. I think that he makes
your team better and I would be shocked if New
York doesn't select him at three.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
So I was saying earlier, it's Georgia players, even if
they have character issues, even if they've underachieved a little,
the bottom line is they get to the pros and
they deliver. Ohio State's got some of that where Ohio
State guys practice against Ohio State guys, and you know,
if you draft a corner from Ohio State, he is
(33:35):
he has been covering in practice for three years. First
round receivers, So I do look at these Georgia players
some of which have underachieved a little. Do you think
teams think about that and go, you know, he's a Buckeye,
he competes against world classes. I look at Ohio State
and Georgia players. I did this with Saban and Bama.
I'd be like, well, if Nick trusts him, you know,
(33:57):
it's I mean, do you do you think tea think
about that? But like a Georgia Ohio State, I think that.
Speaker 6 (34:03):
Teams are seeing some of these players and gosh, I'm
blanking names off the top of my head, but you're
seeing some players right now in the league, you know,
go double digit sacks every single year that didn't have
much production in their college career. And so when you
look at defensive linemen and particular edge rushers in this draft,
you've got a lot of guys that you can put
into two camps traits measurables, you know, potential or production
(34:28):
at the college level. So you've got the Mike Green's
or the Donovan Ezerakus who had seventeen sixteen and a
half last year, led the country, led the power forward,
and you've got that camp, or you've got the Shamar
Stewarts and some of these other guys that may be
underperformed on the stat sheet, but have the traits that
would suggest that they can come in and be explosive
(34:50):
in the National Football League. I think that the trend
is towards traits because you're seeing players who's the guy Gosh,
he was selected number one zero overall.
Speaker 5 (35:02):
Tray Von Walker, right, yeah, for JAXI. Yeah, and he
did not have much.
Speaker 6 (35:07):
He didn't start even much at Georgia, and now he's
becoming a guy that has I think ten and a
half sacks last year. Yeah. I'm hearing a lot of
that out of NFL decision makers. But one thing that
I would just throw in there. I know it's not
specific to this question, Colin, but I think it's an
interesting overarching theme that now we're going to have to
deal with when we're talking about the transactional nature of
college football. I'm hearing more and more and more of
(35:31):
the question marks from these gms and coaches around the
league of does this guy love football? And it just
strikes me that as college football becomes more transactional around transfer,
portal and nil, we're teaching kids that the biggest issue
or thing that they should.
Speaker 5 (35:51):
Be concerned about is their brand and how much money
they're making.
Speaker 6 (35:55):
So then a lot of them make a lot of
money in college football, and then they sit in these
meetia the draft process with these assistant coaches that they
make ten times.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
More money then and they're like, I don't like who
are you?
Speaker 6 (36:09):
And so there's been more of that going on this
year of hey, this was a bad meeting this or that,
and it's like, hey, there's a lot of bitter assistant
coaches in the National Football League that have not made
a ton of money and they have not moved up
the ladder. And then these kids walk in and they
don't kiss their butts, and so then they run around
to the next guy that'll write an article for him
(36:31):
and they start talking about how this.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
Kid's interviews were terrible. There's a lot of that going on.
Speaker 6 (36:36):
It's a different nature of the draft process, I think
this year than any other year that I've covered.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
Okay, finally, I watched cam Ward at Washington State. I
thought he was really talented. I didn't think first overall
picking the draft. I watched them at Miami. I thought, oh,
he's really talented. I don't really think he's the number
one pick in the draft. And now he is. So
is this a matter of he plays the position and
the team drafting really needs him? When you watch them
(37:02):
in college, when did you ever think, wow, he could
be a number one pick. I thought that with Caleb
four games into USC. I thought it with Jayden Daniels
at LSU. I'm like, this kid put on weight from ASU.
That kid's all baller. I never looked at cam as
a number one pick? Is this just position and need?
Did you did you see him in college as a
(37:24):
dominant player?
Speaker 6 (37:27):
Well, let's let's let's reframe it, because we're not grading
on a scale of one hundred to be the number
one overall pick.
Speaker 5 (37:34):
We're not rating him to be the number one one
overall pick.
Speaker 6 (37:39):
We are rating him on a scale, you know, like
this on a curve, excuse me, And the curve is
what else is available? If you're Tennessee, you have to
select the best available quarterback.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
Period.
Speaker 6 (37:52):
Cam Ward is the best available quarterback this year. I
happen to believe it's a bad year to be in
that position for Tennessee. If you're looking at the twelve
guys that were selected in the top or excuse me,
the six guys that were selecting the first twelve picks.
A year ago, I think Cam would maybe be fifth
or sixth in that class, probably outside of the tops six.
(38:15):
And yet this year he's going to be number one.
That's not a knock against Cam, that's just that's the
year in which he's coming out. He's got great confidence,
great arm strength, a quick release. He can threaten every
blade of grass out there. But there's no doubt he's
going to have to grow and develop at the next level.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
And I think that he can. I really do. But
it's a curve. It's not a scale to one hundred,
it's a curve. And he's got the right year to
be at the top of the curve.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
Yeah, he's got the right year. That's absolutely Joel real quick.
Speaker 5 (38:46):
I know you put up your mock draft.
Speaker 6 (38:49):
Let me just tell you, okay, Genti's going five Jacksonville. Okay,
So switch that Mimbu does not get past the Bears.
There's no chance Mimbo is going to be a top
ten pick. Will Johnson is sliding along with Jihad Campbell
because of injury issues and medicals, and if the Rams
(39:12):
are trading, it would be for Amrion Hampton. And if
there's a trade for Loveland, it's likely to be Denver,
so watch out for that. Yours is really good, really good.
You're right, you're on the same track as most people.
Will's a very good informed But watch out for Mimbo
in the top ten, so will Johnson. So the Bears
(39:34):
would go offense again.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
They've done a lot into mine.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
I think offensive line.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
What about the Niners in Kelvin Banks. They need offensive linemen, yeah, they.
Speaker 6 (39:46):
Do, but they need everything. Remember, like they're decimated from
free agency, so they need to rebuild their roster overall.
So I believe that they're going to just take the
best overall player that.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
They Hey, if they see on the board, If the
Rams like Hampton, is that acknowledging that Blake Koram was
a miss, that's.
Speaker 6 (40:05):
A that's a good thought. That's a possibility, There's no doubt.
It's also an acknowledgement that Hampton is a pretty dynamic player,
both catching.
Speaker 5 (40:14):
It and running it.
Speaker 6 (40:15):
So like, I think that that Sean really likes him.
I don't know if they're gonna they're gonna trade it
because they also love Colston Loveland and they also love
a Mecca a Buca. So In my mind, I think
they would be happy with any of those three, and
they feel like they could probably stand pat and get
one of those three. They're hoping Amaron drops to them.
(40:35):
I don't think that they would release capital to go
get them, knowing that they love Colston Loveland as well
as a Mecca a Buca.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
This is so much fun, Joe Klatt good see anybody
