Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go Our two. It is at Thursday, Jets
Texans tonight in New York, live in Los Angeles. It's
The Herd wherever you may be and however you may
be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day.
We've been talking about this for some time. Is at
the State of California's professional teams have done very well
for the last decade. State of New York's teams have
not done well. Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants bit them a mess.
(00:48):
So and I didn't think the World Series if you
really look at it, I mean they went on and
to with Derek Cole. The only game the Yankees one
was when the Dodgers did a bullpen game, and even
that game, it was lower and lower tier bullpen game.
They didn't send their best relievers out there. They wanted
to save their best relievers for Games five, six, and seven.
(01:08):
So the only game the Yankees won, that's it. The
only game the Yankees won. So you could say, oh,
could have gone either way. It's not close. And the
Yankees now have more money, they have a better roster.
Otani's not going to be hurt. Next year. Otani could
be pitching. Uh, it's May's going to be back. Glass
now is going to be back to pitcher. Kershaw is
going to be back. The Dodgers are only going to
be better. And I think, you know, last night was
(01:31):
one of those, but the I think the Dodgers sort
of smelt blood once they tied it up with all
those Yankee miscus in the fifth. I think everything's shifted
for Los Angeles and I think Dave Roberts and everybody thought, Okay,
they're reeling, they're tight, it's palpable. Let's finish this puppy off.
We don't have to go back to Los Angeles with
Yamamoto and Walker Buehler. If we have to use Walker
(01:53):
Buehler at the end of the game to wrap it up,
we will. That's what happened, and here's what it sounded
like from Joe Davis, the Dodgers a strikeaway, start the
party Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
You're Dodgers have won the World Series. You were down
five to nothing tonight. What is it about this group
that makes it so resilient?
Speaker 4 (02:23):
You know, there's just a lot of ways we can
win baseball games. Obviously, the superstars we have on our
team and the discipline, this kind of all adds up.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
And that's a beginning. You know, it's just wild.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, So the Yankees eventually the anxiety, the stress which
started in Game one when Garrett Cole went eighty eight pitches,
he was humming. They pulled him out, and a lot
of critics, a lot of pushback. You lose when your
ace is on the mound. And from that point forward
it felt like it was the Dodger Series. Even last
(02:59):
night when it was tied late Dodgers take a one
run lead, you knew they were going back to Los Angeles.
You knew they would have no more Garrett Cole to
face and their elite relievers would be used. So I
thought it stacked up as an eventual Dodgers win. It
just happened. I thought, I thought it happened in New York.
I always like when the team wins at home. But
congrats to the Dodgers their eighth World Series championship and
(03:22):
with that Greg Cosel forty five years NFL films. Okay,
so Caleb Williams had been in a three year, three
week role. We look pretty good, no panicking, feet were steady.
They had kind of refined looks for him. And then
he goes to Washington off of buy and it's a mess.
(03:44):
Their first six or seven drives nothing worked. So we
don't think of Washington as having elite defensive personnel. What
did the commanders and Dan Quinn do to completely flummox
the Bears offense?
Speaker 6 (04:01):
It really wasn't magical, Colin. I mean, the pass rush
was really strong. Williams was under a lot of duress
at this point in his career too, even plays where
there were people around him, But it wasn't by NFL standards,
what you'd call big time pressure.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
He's not necessarily ready to handle that. You know, we've
talked about this.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
There's a big difference, and I think it's important to
make this distinction.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
There's a big difference.
Speaker 6 (04:28):
Between being able to get out of the pocket and
make plays, which he's very, very good at We saw
him do that later in the game on a pass
I believe to Keenan Allen. But there's a big difference
between that and moving efficiently and effectively within the pocket,
and he's not quite ready for the second part of that,
moving efficiently and effectively within the pocket to kind of
(04:50):
find a quieter space to throw the football. So he
was under a lot of duress in this game, and
it was just a pass rush that was really a
big factor. The left Jones went out after eighteen snaps.
They put in a rookie at left tackle who really
had a hard time.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
So, you know, I think overall with Williams, the main.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Thing for him is he continues his development and he's
going to be a very good player.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
I don't think there's any question about that.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
Is how quickly and how well he can see things
clearly and decisively and deliver the football.
Speaker 5 (05:23):
And that's very often the case with young quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Speaking of one that's struggling, Anthony Richardson. Now people are saying, well,
Josh Allen after ten starts wasn't great, But I thought
Josh Allen was slowly building and growing. Anthony Richardson, forget
the turnovers and that can't stay healthy. I think he's
struggling from the pocket more now with Shane Steichen in
good weapons than he was a year ago. What do
(05:47):
you see on film?
Speaker 6 (05:50):
Yeah, I think there's a couple of things with him, Kyle,
and number one, I think he's really struggling to understand
the route concepts and the read involved in the specific
route concepts versus the specific coverage. So therefore his eyes
are not in the right place. And if you just
wait a beat, as you know, half a beat in
(06:10):
the NFL, and your eyes are not in the right
place and your timing is off, you're going to really struggle.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
So that's the first part of it.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
The second part of it is he's just not at
this point in time, a naturally accurate thrower to the football.
He's very scattershot. He misses too many routine throws, and
it's really really difficult to be successful when you miss
routine throws. So again, this is a difficult situation. Neither
you nor I are in their building. We don't understand
(06:41):
the day to day. But this is not a bad
football team, and given the state of that division and
the state of the AFC, they may believe as they
should that they have an opportunity to be in the playoffs. Yeah,
and you sort of walk that fine line between quarter
quarterback development and hey, we've got a chance to be
in the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (07:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Now that's what I said this week. I think the
Colts could win that division. I like their personnel a
team I was really wrong on, and I was wrong
on Mike Tomlin. I've criticized him for years and many
defensive coaches for being out of touch or tone deaf
to the offense. But Justin Fields had a winning record
and he said, no, I'm moving on to Russell Wilson.
It would have been very easy because Justin Fields is popular, young,
(07:23):
and relatable to the locker room. Yes, it would have
been very easy to stick with that. And Mike Tomlin
is a defensive coach, sensed urgency a lot of these
defensive coaches don't. And I got to give Mike Tomlin credit.
So what is Russell Wilson doing now in the last
couple of weeks that maybe Justin Fields wasn't Because the
offense it looks more big play and more efficient to me.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Yeah, and it is.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
And keep in mind, it's still foundationally a run first offense.
In the last two games that Wilson has started on
first down, Nijee Harris has carried the ball twenty six
times and done extremely well. So this is a run
first offense. They've put Wilson under center. He's been really
good under center play action. Boot has become a significant
(08:11):
part of their offense. And the other thing, clearly is
he does throw the ball down the field, so he
better takes advantage of their weapons. Yeah, both pickens, and
of course we're seeing Austin who I remember watching him
coming out of the University of Memphis and I thought
he could be a good pro in the right situation.
So we're seeing an under center offense, which is really
(08:32):
not a major part of NFL teams these days. But
they've put him under center to play to his straints,
because Wilson, at his core, that's what he does best
when it can be defined for him. In under center
play action, you define the reads and the throws much better.
He's not at his best as a shotgun quarterback where
you're asking him to be a higher level progression reader.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
So now you're playing to his strength.
Speaker 6 (08:56):
You're getting the ball to your weapons, and you're still
starting with the run game and Nijee Harris. I think
he's looked better this year than he has at any
point in his NFL career.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
So I have said the Steelers remind me of the Chargers.
They're not the Ravens, the Bills of the Chiefs, but
the Steelers do too many things well right now not
to be a playoff team. And I feel with the
Chargers and the Steelers, they're good enough to win a
playoff game, probably not get to a conference championship. So
I watched this week and I thought the Chargers and
Hardball were smart to let Justin Herbert run a little
(09:28):
because they really lack weapons. What do you see with
the Chargers doing for Yeah, I mean they just don't
have a lot of guys on the perimeter.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
No, they don't.
Speaker 6 (09:37):
I mean it's Palmer, it's McConkie, it's Fohjoko, it's Sjalen Rieger.
They don't have what you'd call big time weapons. McConkie
will be a very good player, but he's not a
true number one type. So what they've done a lot
this year. It's Greg Roman, as you know, is the
offensive coordinator and he's basically to some degree replicated what
he did in Baltimore because they have a defensive tackle
named Scott Matt Lack who is now a full back.
(10:00):
He's played one hundred and fifty one snaps on offense
this year, so he's essentially their Patrick Ricard. Patrick Ricard
everybody knows from Baltimore. So now they run a very
similar style offense. They play a lot out of two backs,
with the fullback being Matt Lack, so the pass game
is still kind of a work in progress. So they're
a very physical running team. They play at a base personnel.
(10:24):
It'll be interesting as the season progresses if they try
to expand the pass game. There's no question from a
talent standpoint that Herbert can do that, but right now
that's not the way they're playing, and you could well
be right. It could be a function of the fact
that the weapons are somewhat lacking on the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Yeah, So it's interesting with Kansas City. They don't have
a high ceiling offensively, am I even Worthy, who I like,
feels like more of a gadget guy or an occasional
deep guy, not a volume guy. But despite that, their
efficiency in high leverage moments third down, Yeah, four time
is inane. So why can they do in high leverage
(11:04):
moments what they don't necessarily do consistently over the cords
of a game.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
It's a great question.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
I don't know if I have a great answer to
the why, but you're one hundred percent right. The reality
is that on third down they're one of two teams
in the NFL that have converted over fifty percent, Tampa
being the other, the team they play on Monday Night.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
But they're very, very good on third down for a
couple of reasons.
Speaker 6 (11:28):
Number One, they do have some really well schemed third
down concepts that present clean throws for Patrick Mahomes, and
that's what you're always trying to do for your quarterback.
And secondly, it's the Mahomes factor. You know, it's it's
very much like Josh Allen.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
It's the Mahomes factor.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
You know, you get him moving, making plays outside of structure,
very difficult on a defense. I remember speaking to a
defensive quarterly natter a couple of years ago and saying,
with quarterbacks like Mahomes, Alan Jackson, you really have two defenses.
The first two to two and a half seconds of
a play and then the next two to three to
four seconds of a play, and those second two to
(12:06):
three four seconds are really really difficult to defend from
a discipline standpoint. So despite the fact that they look
very often out of sync in the past, game is
I think we would both agree.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
The fact is.
Speaker 6 (12:18):
On third down they've been really, really good and that's
allowed them to sustain enough in conjunction with their run
game and a really good defense to be an undefeated team.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
So you get to a point, I've said this before,
hard to win a World Series without a good bullpen.
If you're leaking runs in the late innings against elite teams,
you're not gonna win it. It's hard to win a
Super Bowl, Asthma Holmes, with a bad old line. When
you have a good old line, it not only matters
to get a lead. A great o line helps you.
With a lead, you can sustain drives, you can kill
(12:51):
the clock. It's not just for scoring. It's often for
game management and killing the clock because Detroit's gonna score
points a lot of times. It's let's burn eight minutes
and not give the ball back to an elite quarterback. Sure,
what can Green Bay do to slow down the locomotive
known as the Bear or the Lions O line and offense.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Yeah, well, to me, the Packers are one of the
most fun defenses to watch.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
Jeff Hafley's done a great job.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
One thing that's become a trend in the league, and
the Packers are right in the forefront of it is
six and seven man defensive front looks. So now the
offense has to protect that. But what they often do,
and the Packers are great at this, is they'll show
a seven man front and at so now it's seven
on the front, four on the back end. So what
they'll do is then they'll drop out three and it
(13:42):
becomes seven on the back end in some form of
zone coverage and a four man pressure. Okay, they're really
good at that kind of disguise, the late rotation. Xavier
McKinney is a master at being able to do that.
Speaker 5 (13:55):
He's a terrific player.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
Beyond the interceptions, he's just a really savvy, smart player
in coverage.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
So they're really really good at that. Those are the
kinds of things that they do every week. They'll do
it against the Lions. They'll try just to slow down GoF.
Speaker 6 (14:10):
All you have to do is slow down a quarterback
as he's dropping back by half a beat, and you
may have an advantage. The bigger issue though, for them,
I think, will be defending their run because the one
thing about the Lions we always talk about golf, but
their run game is really good.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Yeah, okay, this is a selfish question. I don't know
if anybody else cares. But I picked the Broncos. I
picked the Denver Broncos. I said they may not be
a playoff team, but the idea of Vegas has them
at five wins. Peyton's too good of a coach, they
have weapons. Yep, there's too many players here. I like
they may win eight or nine. To five is ridiculous.
(14:46):
So so far, so good. But I want to talk
not just about Peyton, but about the defense. It's mostly
the same guys as last year, and they're getting tremendous pressure.
What are they doing with the Broncos defense.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
Yeah, they are getting tremendous pressure. In vance. Joseph's always
been one of the best.
Speaker 6 (15:05):
He's their decoordinator, one of the best in the league
at kind of creating pressure and scheming pressure. And that's
what they're doing. They've got a pretty good group as well.
I mean, they've got Cooper on one side. On the outside,
they've got Benito, who came out of Oklahoma, player I
really liked a few years ago as pressure players. They
do a really good job with their disguise, how they
(15:27):
get to their pressures, their overload concepts. I think their
blitz rate is among the highest in the league, and
they're really good doing that. So this is a really
good defense and they're getting quality corner play. Obviously, we
know about Patrick, certain they many think he's the best
corner in the league. Yes, Ida Riley Moss came out
of Iowa and he's played on the other side this year,
(15:50):
and while he's had a few bad moments with some penalties,
he's developing into a quality corner. And you can do
so much more on defense when you feel good about
your corners and they feel good about their corners.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
Yeah, Cirtain's an incredible talent. Okay, you know I've said this.
I have defended Kyler Murray for years. I don't necessarily
trust him in big games, but I think he throws
a beautiful ball. I think he's a more athletic Russell
Wilson and Russell's prime he's elusive, and last week I thought, no, no,
they may beat the Niners, They'll go to Miami lay
(16:22):
an egg and then Kyler in the second half. They
I mean between Harrison Connor Kyler McBride, they've got pieces
offensively and they move the pocket constantly. So is it
just my eyes or has Kyler been a little more
consistent this year? Greg? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (16:43):
You know, Colin, I think he'll always be a little inconsistent,
and there's some weeks you'll be uncertain as to what
you will get, simply because of the way in which
he plays, because of his size, He's always going to
be a little frenetic. He's always going to move At
times will be unbelievable when he does that.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
Other times it doesn't quite work out. But he does
throw a good ball.
Speaker 6 (17:04):
I mean last week in the fourth quarter he was
ten for eleven yep for over.
Speaker 5 (17:07):
One hundred yards.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
And he's made some really impressive throws from the pocket.
You know, you really have to define it for him
from the pocket so that when he hits that back
foot he feels as if he can release the ball,
because if he has if he feels he can't release
it because he's smaller and the bodies start to get closer,
he's going to move. But what I think they've done
(17:28):
really well, and it's what second or third year I
think with this staff. Is it the second year I
but anyway, with the coordinator, they've done it. They've done
a great job now with the spacing in their route concepts,
and I've talked about that a lot when it comes
to a team like the Lions. They're doing a really
good job in Arizona with that and you saw it
(17:49):
last week and that really helps define the reeds and
the throws for Kyler Murray, and that's what you really
need to do so that he can play a little
more settled from the pocket.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Yeah, I want to see the player of the week
is kinder to Marvin Harrison, who's been a bit inconsistent,
but in his big games he's been money. And again,
they're offense, they got pieces, So let's go to the
big play they do.
Speaker 6 (18:10):
Yeah, let's go to the play right now, because this
is a perfect example, Colin of what I'm speaking about
with route spacing, and I think that that's something that's
overlooked a lot when you talk about past games in
the National Football League, is the spacing of routes against
zone coverage. So what we're going to see here is
you're going to see Kyler in the gun where he
is a good part of the time, and this is
(18:31):
going to be what we call a three by one set,
and Marvin Harrison is the boundary X, the single receiver
to the short side of the field. Now, this is
going to be a four man route concept. We're going
to map out the routes here so you can see
all the routes once they come up together. It's a
four man route concept. In Harrison is he's the one
who's going to run the crossing route from the back side.
(18:54):
Now the defense here is going to end up playing
Cover two. So you're going to see the two deep
safeties that's obviously a part.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
Of Cover two.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
You're going to see the middle hole defender, he's going
to run the seam, and then you're going to see
the two corners who are flat defenders. They don't run
with vertical routes. They are flat defenders. So now you know,
I wanted to talk about the route spacing here, which
I think is so important and so critical for a quarterback,
not for any quarterback, not.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
Just a shorter quarterback.
Speaker 6 (19:25):
So what you see is you see the outside vertical
here attacking that void. Then you're going to see the
seam route and that's going to attack a void in
the middle of the field.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
So now you're attacking different voids in the coverage. Then
you're going to see the.
Speaker 6 (19:39):
Flat route attacking a short outside void, okay, and then
you're going to see Marvin's route. He's working across the field, okay,
So now you're working to one side of the field
and you're attacking voids.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Now that's Jaylen Ramsey. He's an underneath defender here.
Speaker 6 (19:55):
His eyes are forward, but he's responsible for Marvin Harrison's
route into that void. But because Harrison is coming from
the other side, Ramsey does not have eyes on him,
so Harrison works into that void. So you can see
how the route spacing created a big void for Marvin Harrison.
They had did such a good job with this last week,
(20:17):
and I think this is one thing we'll continue to
see and this will allow Colin, as you said, maybe
Kyler Murray to be a lot more consistent on a
week to week basis, because the reds and the throws
will become much more defined.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Yep, good stuff. Greg Cosel forty five years at NFL
Films as oa's Greg. Thanks for checking in on a Thursday.
I appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
Thanks, Colin, appreciated as always.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeah, no, I mean you're gonna see some talent the
Bears Arizona this weekend. Offensively, it's an all star team.
Both those teams have a ton of good players.
Speaker 2 (20:49):

Speaker 2 (21:13):
No news, This is the Herd line news.
Speaker 8 (21:18):
Yes, it's weird. It's been a week where we haven't
talked a lot of Cowboys, thankfully. Right they're not a
good football team right now. They're looking to rebound from
that loss to the Niners with a big game against
a Falcon Sunday. Interesting line movement here. Coward uh Dallas
has had a lot of distractions all year and they
have that's made things difficult on him. But McCarthy, he
pointed to one of the team's biggest issues that needs
(21:39):
to be addressed fantaistics.
Speaker 7 (21:43):
Yeah, I'm always the bad met and game of statistics.
Right now, we're not. We got some hard ones that
we just want to take a while to get him
back where they need to be. But our big thing is,
and being the obvious, is just to turnover ratio right now.
And that's that's that's our biggest hindrance because it's what
you know, it holds back a lot of productivity.
Speaker 8 (22:02):
What who could that be a shot at. I don't know.
A guy with the three straight games of two interceptions,
Dak Prescott.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Maybe maybe.
Speaker 8 (22:10):
I mean he had two picks against San Franz, two
against Detroit, two against Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Yeah, a lot of interceptions.
Speaker 8 (22:15):
Not plague great. And he had two earlier in the
season against the Saints.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Oh yeah, allowed to criticize Dak. Web gets very testy.
Speaker 8 (22:22):
So this line is three. It briefly went down to
two and a half yesterday when it looked like Michael
Parsons might return. That Parsons did in practice, It's like
Parsons Bland Digs is banged up. I don't know, man,
It's starting to feel to me like this is the
Falcons is the side here? I think indoor game, vast team.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
If you got it at minus two, I really like Wow.
Speaker 8 (22:46):
The Falcons always screw around with like extra points, kickers
for four kicks, and then it took twelve to ten fives.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
I guess I think I think Atlanta does more things
well right now than the Cowboys do. That's that's my take.
You get to a point after week six and seven,
it's all the fool's gold is gone, like what do
you do well? Atlanta protects the quarterback very well. They
can run the football. They don't rush the passer, so
(23:12):
Dak will be comfortable. So that tells me it's gonna
be a high scoring game when Dak's comfortable. When you
speed Dak up, that's when you get the mistakes when
he's comfortable. But Dallas doesn't run the ball, So I
think Dak's gonna throw forty five times. I think McCarthy
looks at that and says, they don't have a pass rush,
we don't have a run game. So if you like Dak,
(23:34):
bet the Cowboys. If you question Dak in big moments
take Atlanta because I think he's gonna drop back forty
five times. Just they don't they don't create any pressure.
Speaker 8 (23:43):
Yeah, I think I like the Falcons here. I don't know,
the stuff with McCarthy and Jerry Jones and Dak and
the lack of run game and the digs and the
part it's just it's not good. I think your word
applies here.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Noisy.
Speaker 8 (23:57):
It's just been a noisy week season everything for the
Dallas Cowboys. Next up is Sean Payton, your guy. Broncos
are rolling five wins in their last six games, but
the wins have come against some inferior competition, including the
lowly Raiders, the pathetic Saints, and the just abysmal Panthers.
This weekend, they'll head to Baltimore. Spoke to the task
(24:20):
ahead of the team.
Speaker 9 (24:22):
This will be our toughest challenge to date by far,
and this is a real, real good football team. So,
you know, getting back to last week, you know we're
not going to be able to afford a few of
those errors against a good team like this.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Yeah. I think it's I think Denver's got the much
better defense, Baltimore, the much better offense, two excellent coaches.
I do not like big numbers. I've stayed away from
him forever. This is the rare game, which I like
the big favorite, especially because Baltimore coming off a loss.
(25:02):
They're humiliated by it. I mean, nobody's more driven in
this league than like Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. They he
gets so mad. I think they'll come in they'll be
totally focused, and I think what their weakness is, what
Baltimore's weakness is the back end. Denver's not built to
beat you there. You're not facing a team like Philadelphia.
(25:23):
Where Philadelphia against Baltimore. I mean, if AJ Brown had
three over the top touchdowns into Monte Smith, Philadelphia is
actually built to beat Baltimore if they ever matched up,
that's a scary one. Denver's not.
Speaker 8 (25:36):
Yeah, if Poe Nix is throwing the ball thirty five times.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
He's not a big downfield deep ball thrower. He's a mover.
He's sixteen yards and in. But Denver's not built to
beat Baltimore's weakness. So I don't like this spot. And
I also think Baltimore is one of the best home
teams in the league. Now they're lucky. It's an early
game fight Baltimore. Forget am.
Speaker 8 (26:01):
I think you've got to go the over here. Ravens
could easily score forty points if Yeah, I know the
Broncos defense is great, but again, look at the quarterbacks
they face.
Speaker 10 (26:07):
Colin.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
It's like Gardner Minshew, Bryce Young last week, like, come on,
there's a big step up in class for the Broncos.
And I'm with you on the Ravens. Final stories to
the NBA, Colin, there's a concerning report regarding Joellen Mead's
knee injury. According to Sam Amock and Joe Varden of
The Athletic, Although Embid did not suffer a new injury
(26:29):
during the Olympics, his knee is unstable enough that there
was concern about further damage had he played at the
start of the year.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
That story leaks because they're getting criticism for not playing him. Suddenly,
now the story gets out, this damage could ruin the season.
I think Philadelphia is hearing it from their fans and
their media, and the National Meeting calls Barkley it's nonsense.
Barkley is accurate. Nonsense.
Speaker 8 (26:58):
You love this.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
You think Paul George would have left into it Dome
to go to this silly.
Speaker 8 (27:02):
That's a good question. Now that the Clippers were low
balling him and he wanted this Mac deal. So the
Sixers are like desperate, come on down. But now Paul
George walks in the building and it's.
Speaker 1 (27:12):
Like Joel e. Bead's unstated, and Bean's not playing and
Karl Anthony Towns is dropping forty four.
Speaker 8 (27:18):
Poor baby.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Yeah, so I think I do believe this. I think
Milwaukee's in trouble at the end of the season. I
don't trust Philadelphia. I think it's a Celtics Knicks East.
Keep your eye on quickly improving Orlando and Indiana.
Speaker 8 (27:32):
I think how about Indiana last night?
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Yeah, look, no, Indiana Orlando are getting better fast.
Speaker 8 (27:38):
I know we're not allowed to talk about Cleveland, but
the Cavaliers. It's a good smoke. The Lakers last night.
Cavaliers are looking good. New coats.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
I bought into him last year and then burned. I
got to smoke. That was all in d last yeares Yes, yes, uh.
Jmack with the news.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping back the herd. Lie.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
I gotta tell you this story. Maybe that's not a
big deal. And I'm getting worked up over it, this idea.
I'm reading a story on Anthony Richardson. I think the
culture a really good team. I think Joe Flacco could
win six or seven straight. I really like the Colts players.
NFL execs debate the benching of Anthony Richardson. It's so
(28:20):
short sighted. Time out. You dated girl for six months.
It gets worse every month you break up. That's not
short sighted. That's this isn't working, and that's okay. But
Anthony Richardson can't stay healthy turnover machine and he's regressing.
And stop comparing him to Josh Allen. You go back
(28:40):
to Josh allen first ten games. He got better in
the second five than the first five. Like you saw
an ascension, you saw growth. And also Josh Allen had
nothing to work with, no run game, messy offensive line,
really mediocre receivers. The Colts have a brilliant offensive, head coach,
star running back, top five offensive line according to PFF,
(29:02):
top five to six, two excellent receivers. They got the
pieces and it's getting worse. So I mean, like firing
Robert Sala, who was the best coach on your staff,
that was short sighted. Had you beaten the Bills. With Sala,
you would have been in first place. And you didn't
have anybody on your staff that had coaching experience. I
(29:23):
mean NTT. Hackett never been a head coach. The player
who's now the interim coach had never been a head coach.
It's not like you had Mike Zimmer on your staff
or a Dan Quinn on your staff. Then you can
make a firing. In week six or seven, the Jets
fired their best coach. They didn't have anybody on the
staff they had any head coaching experience. Oh that's right.
Hackett was a head coach with the Broncos. I don't
(29:44):
count that the league had burned the film. I know
for an hour and a half he couldn't get through
the seat. I'd get that, all right, you're right. But
the point being is the NFL is not a developmental
league for quarterbacks. People are confused to be, but it's
not anymore. You got to be good and what you
have to do by your second Thanksgiving. People are making
(30:07):
decisions and the culture looking at this thinking we got
good players everywhere. We've lost three or four games to CJ. Stroud.
We think we have a better roster I think the
Colts arguably have a better roster than the Texans, but
they're not beating them. So in Anthony Richards' only five
healthy games this season, his highest completion percentage is fifty percent.
(30:30):
And I've always felt in the NFL the line of
demarcation is sixty. You have to be above sixty. I
would argue that's what it used to be, but now
the line's more like sixty two and a half sixty
three because completions come more easily. So there was always
kind of a you got to complete sixty percent of
(30:52):
your throws. I don't even think that counts anymore. It's
got to be sixty three. Anthony Richardson's highest is fifty.
A lot of times it's forty. So it's again, if
you break up with somebody after six months and it
got worse every month, that's not being short sighted. That is, hey,
this isn't working. We gotta try something else.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
And that's fine.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
But I would be surprised if the Colts don't go
on a pretty nice run with Joe Flacco, and I
don't think it's a super Bowl team. I would be
surprised if, at some point if Flacco stays healthy in
the next six weeks. They are neck and neck with
Houston because I think the rosters are very even. I
don't think either of these rosters is Baltimore or Detroit,
(31:35):
or San Francisco or Philly, but I think Houston and
the Colts have even rosters and one and every time
they play. Now, look, look who's the better team. Okay,
our big bets j Max Been on a Heater.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Next, be sure to catch live editions of The Herd
Weekdays and Noone Easter not a em Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app turned.
Speaker 8 (32:00):
To Big New Saturday as fourth ranked Ohio State squares
off against third ranked Penn State in one of the
biggest games of the year. That all starts at ten
am Eastern with MiG Noon's kickoff live from Happy Valley,
followed by Ohio State Penn State at noon only on
buck Well.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
We called our big bets, Jay Mack's been on a heater.
This is the best I've ever felt about my picks
this year. I got a three and oh coming here
we go.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
It's time for big bets. Colin and j Mack make
their favorite big ten bets of the week.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
I'm gonna take the under on Ohio State Penn State
forty five points. Ohio States on their third string left tackle,
They're moving their left guard to left tackle. Their point
total has declined in five straight games, and I think
Penn State's defense is good to begin with. They've held
for their last five opponents to fourteen points or less.
(33:01):
And Penn State's on a backup quarterback, so I think
this game is close. I think it's low scoring. I
think Ohio State's better, but I don't think they'll be
able to sustain a lot of drive. They're gonna need
some big over the top plays. James Franklin has struggled
against Ohio State, so I'm gonna take the Buckeyes to win.
This game. Feels very twenty four to twenty, very low scoring,
(33:23):
a remarkable game, but I'm gonna take the under forty
five points.
Speaker 8 (33:27):
Okay, I've got Ohio State favor by three and a half,
and yeah, give me the buck guys here, I was
just looking at practice video of the quarterback, a layer
for Penn State. Looks like he's moving fine. I think
he's probably gonna play, but I can't get over the
James Franklin just totally pooping his pants against Ohio State
every year. One and nine against the Buckeyes, and Penn
State is one in thirteen against top five opponents. Yeah,
under Franklin, he just can't win in big regular They
(33:49):
do have very.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
Good defensive talent, they do.
Speaker 8 (33:52):
Yeah, I'll give me ahow see.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
All right, I'm gonna take Nebraska hosting UCLA minus six
and a half. Now, Nebraska, I don't know exactly what
you get, but they're very good against unranked teams. They're
owing three against the ranked teams, but against unranked teams
they're pretty good. There are five wins this season. By
the way, they're a bit of a bully. Are by
seven plus points, so when they win, they pour it on.
(34:15):
UCLA has really struggled. Both the Trojans and the Bruins
have struggled getting into Big ten play. Bruins just aren't
moving the football one and four against Big ten teams.
I think this is a coaching mismatch, and I think
if you get Nebraska at home, they can win by
a touchdown. I'm gonna take the Huskers minus six and
a half.
Speaker 8 (34:35):
All right, there's no way I'm going three and zero
again this week. But I have Minnesota the Gophers going
on the road the worst team. You know, Illinois ranked
their better record. What am I doing here? Well, folks, again,
I'm spending way too much time looking at the markets.
This open one and a half Minnesota, somebody's betted up
to three on the road. I don't know anything about
the Gophers. I'm just following the lines and following the money.
(34:57):
And I think Minnesota's.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Aside now they can run the ball pretty well. I
like Washington at home getting points against USC plus two
and a half. Will Rogers is completing like seventy three
percent of his throws. The Huskies are in a bit
of a rebuild, but they're a good home team. Only
George has won more consecutive games at home, so they're
very good at Husky Stadium. And again, offensively, they'll move
(35:20):
the ball. Jedfish USC. They can't beat Maryland on the road.
They can't beat Minnesota on the road. This is a
much tougher place to play. And I just think USC's
offensive line. They're a young football team, They're a year away.
I do not trust USC going on the road as
a favorite against a rival who, by the way, has
(35:44):
won many of the previous meetings in recent years. I'm
gonna take the Huskies two wins straight out.
Speaker 8 (35:50):
After that, Lincoln Riley started looking for real estate in Chicago.
Maybe my final pick I'm get in front of the
Indiana Hoosiers again could spell disaster like last time, but
I'm going Michigan State getting seven and a half. A
lot of this has to do with next week's games college.
These college kids are looking ahead.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
Yep.
Speaker 8 (36:07):
Next week Indiana Michigan will probably be the biggest home
game Indiana's ever hosted. Indian's playing great, but I like
the s party Sparty getting plus seven and a half here.
It looks like their quarterbacks are going to come back
and should be fine.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Cobra Kai with his picks. Yes, historically Cobra.
Speaker 8 (36:23):
Got straight winning weeks now though don't ask about the
first two weeks, but the last six have been money.
We'll see if this holds up.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Colling, so we both will both have Oryan. The buck
eye is Nitney Lyons. I like Ohio State, but I
think it's a low scoring game twenty four to twenty.
You like Ohio State straight out? I think Ohio If
I had to, I take the Buckeye straight out.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
Yeah, last week we called it. Ohio State was playing
with their food for much of the game. Goo messing
around looking at this game, and they didn't. I don't
think they covered last week or even close this week.
I think they get it done.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Okay, So well, we we talked about this, and we'll
talk more about it top of next hour. As Drew
Brees stops buying about forty minutes from now. Is that
just the meltdown by the Yankees. It's the craziest thing
I've ever seen. In the half inning, and Jeter and
a Rod talked about that Yankee meltdown after the game.
Speaker 10 (37:10):
I don't know if I've ever quite seen it anying
like this, especially in the World Series or postseason game. Look,
the Yankees made some mistakes. You can't make mistakes against
a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Cole was great, but that's not the story.
Speaker 8 (37:24):
I mean, this is one of the greatest meltdowns that
I've ever seen in forty years.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
Yeah, I mean, think about that. Garrett Cole was good
twice and they lost both games. I don't think. I
don't think it was a particularly close series. The only
game the Yankees won was the Dodgers bullpen game. Now
the Dodgers bull pen game beat the Padres, so the
Yankees took advantage of it. But I think there was
something talked about this week. The Yankees aren't winning postseason
(37:52):
series against anybody except the American League Central, and so
Yankee fans are like, oh, this is the beginning of
something special. I don't think they're gonna I don't think
they're gonna pay for Sodo. I don't think they are.
I think either the Mets of the Dodgers or keep
your eye on like a Houston of the Braves, But
I don't think. I don't think they're gonna pay for them.
And so and I you know, Aaron Judge is great,
(38:13):
John Carlos Stanton, but I felt watching this series that
the middle and bottom of the Yankees batting order it's
just not as special as the Dodgers is. And the
mistakes were. This is so weird to me. I just couldn't.
I couldn't get over it. And volpay short hopping that ballted,
I mean this again, this is day one spring training.
(38:34):
Stuff just tight, and and that Garrett Cole again one
hundred and eight pitches really good. It was miscommunity. I
don't know, I didn't you forget.
Speaker 8 (38:45):
Cole thought that the first baseman could just get there. Yeah,
it looked like he pointed like, oh, you got it,
and but Rizzo's so slow. It's just I was painful
to watch that. That's more on coal. You can point, so, yeah,
that's on that's not on Rizzo's basic basic baseball. You
learn that in little league when.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
That's day one install spring training. I mean, that's the
that's the basic stuff. So, uh, you know I had
said this earlier. I really believe this is that this idea.
As a nation, we're more distracted than ever, and sports
is broader. We've got now tiktoks and Instagram and cable.
I mean there's just I'm reading stories today about Comcast
(39:25):
doing something. There are more platforms and places to get consumers, right,
and so I mean people, I mean YouTube TV steals audience,
so kids aren't watching TV as much, right, And so
the point being is how do you get people to
our business television? And you do it with special something
(39:46):
nobody's seen Caitlin Clark special. You know, the twelve team
playoff in college football. We've never had one of those
or the Dodgers a totally stacked All Star team Milwalker, Bueler,
Clayton Kershaw, Mokey Betts, O Taani, Freddie Freeman. I would
go get Sodo. I would just say, hell with it,
(40:08):
let's just go all in. I mean, the Yankees lead
Major League Baseball in attendance, and those are not cheap tickets.
Believe me. They lead major League Baseball at attendants I
think by like seven thousand people a game. Forget the
parking revenue and the food and the so the Dodgers
are an ATM machine, like they They've got that money
is not the issue with them, and they've scouted well
(40:30):
and drafted well, so they do have cheap players on
the roster. What they'll do is probably move off ta
Oscar Hernandez go after a Sodo. They have passed on guys.
They passed on Manny Machado. Was it Zach Grinkey they
passed on? I think that years and years and years ago.
I mean they have passed on big guys, but I
think Sodo they let Max Scherzer go, Like the Dodgers
(40:52):
don't just pay for everybody they've Machado is a great player.
Let him go. But I think bets oh Tani, Freddie Freeman, Soto,
I believe is in play. They'll just move the chess pieces.
Speaker 8 (41:03):
Of big loss for the for the Yanks.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
If so, Oh, it changes the dynamic of everything. Hour
three next
