Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
We were talking earlier about quarterbacks that kind of fake
like they're gonna slide, and so like defenders get very frustrated.
They can't hit anybody. They don't make what they used
to relative to what offensive guys make. We have that
Kenny Pickett video at College at Pittsburgh. We've shown you
the you know, the Mahomes video where you know, Kenny
Pickett looks like he's gonna slide. So these defensive players
(00:47):
are very frustrated. The rules are against him, the money's
not going in their direction. You've got quarterbacks faking like
they're gonna slide. And Tom brad and again, I understand
it's a late hit, but a three game suspension feels
very punitive to me. And and here was Tom Brady
earlier on the Trevor Lawrence Play.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Defensive players have to be aggressive. That's their nature. I
always tried to be aggressive on offense. We tried to
a block aggressively, and at the same time the defense
tries to tackle aggressively. So I don't know, there's an
aspect to me that I think the quarterbacks and the
certainly the quarterbacks need to take better care of themselves.
The aspect again for a play caller, there's more design
(01:26):
runs for quarterbacks ever now than in the history of
the NFL. So are we really trying to protect quarterbacks?
Because if you are trying to do it through the rules,
then why are the offensive coordinators not protecting their quarterbacks
by keeping them under the pocket And maybe they find
or penalize a quarterback for sliding late, you know, and say, look,
(01:46):
if we don't want these hits to take place, we've
got to penalize the offense and the defense.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, I mean, what do we complain about as fans
think about this in the last two three years. If
there's one or two plays we complain about, it is
defensive players being panalized for marginal late hits or their
bodies on the quarterback. So if we're complaining about it,
what do you think the defensive players are thinking about it.
(02:14):
And again, I have no problem with the one game suspension,
but a fifth of the season feels like too much
to me. J Mack with the News.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
No, no, this.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Is the headline news.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
We talked a little bit about it earlier. The Lions
just walking wounded.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Right now.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
They are eleven and one, tied with the Chiefs for
the best record in the league. But man, the injuries
are mounting. Colin They have now seven players on IR
six of them are defenders. Aiden Hutchinson obviously the biggest one.
Dan Campbell spoke about Detroit's injury issues.
Speaker 6 (02:48):
Some of these have just kind of been one of
those like chalk it up to you know, that was
a that's a freak deal. You know, that's a that's
kind of an odd thing that happened, and how it happened.
You know, there's no rhyme or reason, and this happens.
I mean, it just does. As long as I've been
in this league as a player, as a coach, and
some years are great, it works out great. Some years
(03:10):
it's just it's like this, you know, and you know
you overcome it.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Well, the good news is yeah, I mean, it's all
it's all def I mean their linebacking crew has been
totally Decimated's front seven too. Yeah, here's the news. The
good news though, if you're going to have a side
that's decimated, you want it to be that side because
the further you go into a season, statistically, more defensive
players get hurt the offensive players. And so as long
(03:36):
as your tackles are healthy, your quarterback, your weapons are healthy,
you have a chance to win the Super Bowl. Kansas
City last couple of years been kind of rare where
their defense has bailed them out a lot. But the
Niners great defenses don't have any rings to show for it.
Baltimore's defenses before this year no, no, no rings to
show for If you're gonna have injuries, I'd rather have
(03:57):
them on the defensive side. Give me my firepower.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
Going into the playoffs, we have the note that Jamal
Adams has been signed to the Lions practice far well.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
He's almost a safety slash line.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
They're gonna have to put him in linebacker. But listen,
every coach smart coach in the league knows he can't
guard anybody, so he's gonna be a massive liability and coverage.
He's Seahawks and Jets. Remember, no, he would make some
splash plays in the box, but like he's.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Just we're not bringing it. You're not bringing him in
for coverage. You're bringing him in to be a linebacker
and chase. I mean, he's he's gonna have to chase,
not receivers around, It'll be running backs and tight ends,
which I think he's capable of doing it.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
I saw the show before us. They were talking about
Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator the Lions, as a coaching candidate. Listen,
if he's able to coach this team to make a
run with this defense having nobody, that would be tremendous. Glenn,
of course, a former Jet great at cornerback. I gotta
say something good about the Jets, all right. Next up
is the MVP Award Colins. Did you know there hasn't
been a non quarterback to win the NFL MVP since
(04:53):
twenty twelve Adrian Peterson. But Saquon Barkley has probably the
best case we've seen in a while. He's got seventeen
hundred and sixty six yards from scrimmage, thirteen tds, and
he's gotten MVP chance. Here is Saquon Barkley on his
ultimate goal.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
I appreciate the MVP chance, so you know, it's great,
But at the end of the day, the most part
of the thing is when in football games and I've
been so locked in and so focused on my preparation
in the way.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
That I worked throughout the week.
Speaker 7 (05:22):
There's a reason why I'm getting those chances. So if
I continue to take care of that, then you know,
when the season's over, we'll look up to see what happens.
But at the end of the day is continue to
get wins and put usself in position to go deep
in the running playoffs.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Running backs generally don't age well. Derrick Henry has, Saquon
Barkley has. I would have no problem giving Saquon Barkley
the MVP. I mean, they've switched their offense. Jalen Hurts
now is throwing about sixteen to eighteen times a game.
They've changed their offense and hurt and Jalen Hurts was
an MVP candidate two three years ago and they've just
reduced his roles, So it didn't bother me at all.
(05:57):
I the difference.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
With the VP versus say Heisman in college. This is
clear most valuable Saquan is extremely valuable, but he's not
as valuable as Josh Allen. You take Josh Allen off
the Bills, Colin, they're like a five wood team. Come on,
it's got to be Josh Allen who's heavily favored. You
saw the odds there on the screen.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
I'm not disputing that. I do think he is. I
think he's had major influence. I don't think he's the
most valuable.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Give you Offensive Player of the Year award or whatever
it is. Yeah, could Josh Allen even lose it? He's
got the Rams this week out here at so Far.
You know there'll be a lot of Bills fans, and
you need to talk to your people about the Stafford
injury that's being talked about behind the scenes.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
I don't know where did you get that information on
the strand walking the Dog.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
I cannot reveal my source.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Why do you always have Stafford information? Anyways? Big God?
Speaker 5 (06:46):
And then Josh Allen has at Detroit. That's a huge game.
I don't want to say golf could catch him, but
that's a big swing game for him. Then he's got Jokers,
the Patriots twice and Jets. I think Josh Allen Colin
probably is a lock final story. We're talking about college
football rivalries and the flag planting, which is nonsense. Well,
Baker Mayfield, who seems to be one of the pioneers
(07:08):
of flag planting, he has chined in on this postgame
celebration in college football.
Speaker 8 (07:15):
College football is meant to have rivalries. It's like the
Big Twelve banning the horns down signal.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Just let the Boys play.
Speaker 8 (07:21):
Ou Texas does it every time they play. It's not
anything special. You take your l and you move on. Yeah,
I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
He's got no tabsule fists being thrown.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Baker's gotten very good at the podium. He used to
be a firecracker. He was just starting stuff. Now he's
the voice of reason. You notice that he's very change man.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
Yes, he's out liking my tweets that were negative about
him like he did when he was back in the day.
He would do that. You'll see like Baker Mayfield liked it.
I'm like, oh, is is this a bot? The real
Baker Mayfield? He's liking negative tweets about him and using
that to.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Fuel Oh, Michael Jordan did that too, KD. Does that
nothing wrong?
Speaker 4 (08:03):
With that.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
You do you do that? No, I don't. I don't
go on there. You're on that thing all day.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
I'm not.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
I'm just during games, I'm not on there. Usually it's
not good waste of time kind of. I don't need
to help the world's richest van anymore.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Okay, that's a take. Yeah. J Mack with the news.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Heard Line News. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Herd weekdays at noon eastern nine am Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Well, we get him every couple of weeks, and we
love having him. Aniowa's brings tape, which is even better.
Former usc or ten years in the NFL, Mark Sanchez
joining us here on a Tuesday. We love having Mark Sanchez.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
I got a whole live audience there.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
I was growing it out for a role. I told you, good, Senior.
By the way, my buddies over there, Eric and Kim,
they're big sc fans.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Okay, oh yeah, that's our live audience.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Yeah clapping today?
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Are they Eastern Washington Pacific? Northwest cares?
Speaker 1 (09:06):
But me about that school, Me and Cooper.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Cup I didn't know you had a haircut. By the way,
I did very corporate.
Speaker 9 (09:11):
I had to be a villain in a role in
a big time Hallmark movie coming out.
Speaker 7 (09:17):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
So you're buttoned up.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
So if you have the Eagles, so you've already started
to jump into your film, and uh, if we were
talking about Saquon Barkley's influence having a I'm trying to
think of your career. So you had a great left tackle,
you had good receivers, you had Rex Ryan, you had
an excellent defense. You're running back? Did you who did
you get?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Who was Thomas Jones and then Seaun Green?
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Okay, those are.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Good players, great players.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Philadelphia sort of morphed and modified Green based on a
little bit of this with Josh Jacobs. You look up
Mark a couple of years ago, we were like, running
backs don't get paid. And I watched Green Bay and
Philly and I and Baltimore. I'm like, those are running teams.
Give me your thoughts on how Philadelphia mid season has
kind of morphed into something.
Speaker 9 (10:04):
Well, I think some of the key statistics there were
weeks one through four, they're two and two and the
sky's falling. Get Sirianni out of here. You know, this
team's terrible. We can't win a game. They go on
bye week week five. Since that bye week, they're eight.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
No.
Speaker 9 (10:21):
The teams they beat at the beginning, the first five
of that run on the eight game Heater, Browns, Giants, Bengals.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Jags, Cowboys. Yeah, they should.
Speaker 9 (10:29):
Win those games, right. The Cowboys were banged up in
the game they played. Yes, the last three Commanders, Rams
and Ravens. The last two were on the road. Those
are quality wins. Quality wins you know later in the year,
you get into November December, those are big time matchups
and they played well, Well, what's the real difference? And
it's one Saquon Barkley limiting some of the times that
(10:55):
Jalen Hurts has to even put the ball in the air.
Taking pressure off of him has been huge. Those rookie dbs, are.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
You kidding me?
Speaker 9 (11:04):
Cooper Dejane's playing out of his mind and that I'm
telling you, I say this all the time on the show,
but that kid playing nickel in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Your rookie year is really really hard, Like you got
to fit up in the run game.
Speaker 9 (11:17):
You got to understand quick shifty slot receivers, and you
got to mirror those guys inside. You got to be
physical when you fit up in the run game. There's
a lot on your play. It's different than outside corner
and outside corners hard. This is just the next level
of awareness, intelligence, football IQ and physicality.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
So that kid's playing lights out.
Speaker 9 (11:36):
I think one of the other issues was they were
minus six, I want to say, in turnover differential those
first four games of the season. Since then they're like
plus nine. Yes, So that tells me that their formula
run heavy, established own the line of scrimmage, which you
know their offensive line knows how to do with coach
(11:57):
stoutlind Like, that's exactly what they do, especially as a
season wears on, they dominate the line of scrimmage. Now
we start scoring points. We have timely completions from Jalen
Hurts to guys who can run after the catch. Now
you add Hurts in some of that run game. Teams
are chasing you, trying to catch your points. They're chasing
your points that you've already put up. Well, here comes
(12:18):
the pass rush, here comes the Eagles defense, and now
they suffocate you and then they just start running away
from these teams because they've taken care of the football.
And that's why those fourth quarter numbers for Saquon Barkley
are insane. That's you know, that might put them in
the top of the MVP race.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
So it's not that you're good in the NFL. It's
often when you're good, because first quarter can often be schemed.
If you look at bow Knicks fourth quarters since Week
four markets like veteran numbers. Yeah, that's often trailing. Everybody's
seeing your best stuff. No, No, it's a whole different ball.
You can have an offensive line and that gets dinged
(12:54):
up in the second quarter. You could have you know,
some of your sets. You're not running, you don't have
the personnel is there. I mean that to me just
seems really impressive. It's not dead. He's good. I can
see if his first twelve plays he was money. He's
better in the four. What does that tell you?
Speaker 9 (13:09):
Well, I think they I don't think last night is
their ideal formula for winning, right, Every once in a while,
you'd probably try and limit it to you know, five
or less games.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
A year, hopefully two to three.
Speaker 9 (13:20):
If you get in a shootout, okay, we'll kind of
adapt to that situation and we're gonna have to put
it up forty times. But you look at the attempts
per game for bon Nicks and they obviously trust them.
And Sean Payton is riding that fine line. He's walking
a tightrope of developing the quarterback and winning this year
without letting the quarterback screw it up, right a rookie quarterback,
(13:41):
which can happen.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
I've been there, dude. It's it's hard.
Speaker 9 (13:44):
You go through, you go through a rut, you go
through some bad games, and you're the reason you're losing
some of these games. It's frustrating for everybody. So he's
he's riding that wave and that momentum. I think he's
done an excellent job of Yes, last night, they're gonna
have to put the ball downfield, like we're see on
a lot of these clips. But of his thirty plus
attempts per game, whatever he's at, he's right around there.
(14:07):
I'd say ten of those are almost no brainer kind
of screens to the halfback, to the tight end, tunnel
screens to the wide receiver, bubble throws out on the perimer,
which are essentially an extension of the run game and
those should be high completion percentage, momentum builders for the quarterback,
confidence builders for the quarterback. So he gives him so
many of those. And he sat in this chair and
(14:28):
told you, I don't want my quarterback flying the top
gun mission at the end of the movie to save
the world from nuclear destruction every single play, because it's
exhausting and you definitely don't want to do it with
a rookie quarterback. So I think he's done a great
job of taking that pressure off him, giving him easy
completions and then relying on the defense. The defense didn't
(14:48):
play great last night, but they got away with the win.
Winning when you're not playing well, or don't play to
your strength, or you're not totally on track formula wise,
that's a huge, huge confident builder, especially going into their
bye week. So this team's going to be dangerous, and
I'm impressed that that Sean Payton has this much trust
and gives Bonet such a long leash.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
So both Denver and Philadelphia Buffalo playing their best football now,
whereas Kansas City is still scuffing it a little. Baltimore
now struggling more and more. Their special teams gone a
little sideways. Take me to a season and with Detroit,
I said this, it's not that they peak too soon.
They lost their entire linebacking corps. Go to your best
(15:32):
jet seasons and then seasons that maybe weren't that. Some
of this is attrition. I feel like Detroit now is losing.
This morning, I would take Philly over Detroit. I did
not feel that five weeks ago. It's injuries.
Speaker 9 (15:45):
Definitely injuries, the injury bug. You hope it if it does.
You know Rear, it's ugly head. He wanted to be
early in the season, and you want to be able
to get those guys back right if you could have
your preference. Now, you can't always do that. So you
got to manage well with the teams that you're talking about,
whether it's Detroit Philly. The biggest thing there is, once again,
(16:07):
there's gonna be a couple outliers in the season of
this isn't our kind of game. It's not going the
way we'd like to script a game. How can we
adapt because one of those playoff games is going to
be like that, maybe two, maybe all of them. And
so if you can have that contingency planning, you put
a good performance on tape when it doesn't look right,
or you win the ugly thirteen to twelve game that
(16:30):
gives you so much confidence because it's just in your
back pocket for later on. And we look at guys,
we're down personnel. Congratulations to back up so and so
who elevated and played well.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
You show the team that in the team meeting.
Speaker 9 (16:43):
Make sure everybody knows, hey, man, we got guys waiting
in the wings that can play. As soon as we
get our stud back, we're gonna be really set.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
You know.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
So you show that kind of stuff.
Speaker 9 (16:51):
You build on those kind of plays and performances, but
you try and get back to your formula at all costs.
When you talk about the Chiefs, they're getting everybody's best
shot for the last two years, I mean it is.
It's hard when you're a Final four team, when you
play some of these teams the next year. I can
only imagine after two Super Bowl wins, you're getting everybody's
(17:12):
best shot. Bryce Young in Carolina, I mean took them
to the wire a couple weeks ago and then last
week again.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
So that's part of it.
Speaker 9 (17:21):
And bottom line to this war of attrition that you
alluded to is and this is an old, you know
Harbaugh thing, whether Jim John or their dad.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
But the season's long for a reason.
Speaker 9 (17:30):
Seasons long to show you who's really good and who
can outlast too, And that's part of the way this
thing is built.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
So you need tough guys that love football, that are
in it.
Speaker 9 (17:39):
For the long haul, can play hurt and show up
for you when it matters.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
All right, Well, you always bring tape. We have it on,
Aaron Rodgers. This week. I'll also ask you about that
hit on Trevor Lawrence. And what I'd said is defensive
players have had all the rules taken away, they no
longer make the big money and left their pass rushers.
It's there, and the quarterbacks are faking going down like
it's something. I'm going to give you a couple of
(18:04):
seconds to get that digested. We'll do that. Aaron Rodgers
thoughts with Mark Sanchez. Next live in LA, It's The Herd.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noone Easter, not a em Pacific.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
All right, Mark Sanchez, who will have the Eagles hosting
the Panthers, and the Panthers run defense isn't very good,
so you could be talking about Saquon Barkley a lot.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
No, boy, like a lot.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Okay, you bring tape. We love this And I've always
been a little reluctant to lean you into the Jets
because of your history there, but so I love the
fact that you're going because that game was, by the way,
a winnable game for the Jets. I mean it was.
It had twenty eight to seven right in front of you.
So let's go to the tape.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
What do you got, Yeah, it was.
Speaker 9 (18:43):
It was really a wacky game and so many back
and forth momentum shifts, and you were I mentioned this
in the broadcast with Adam Amin and somebody needed to
just stabilize their team and kind of call everybody up,
all hands on deck. Hey, guys, get back to our basics,
get back to our fundamentals. And the real tipping point
in the game I thought was the second and seven.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
The first clip I'm about.
Speaker 9 (19:06):
To show you, and this was a classic after a
bye week show A counter on offense for the Jets
offense Todd Downing, he does the self scout. Hey, we
run a lot of this play in the red zone
when we get specific coverages.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
I got the counter to beat it.
Speaker 9 (19:20):
So if we roll this clip on second and seven,
this is where the tide really turned and let Seattle
back in the game. So you have two on two
up top. It's a three by one formation. They're playing
a combo coverage. Basically, it ends up like Mann to
man on the backside, the corner on Adams, and then
the linebacker on the back breas haul. The two safeties
are going to help out to the speed which is
the three receiver side. Okay, the passing strength down here.
(19:44):
This is a play that they run quite a bit,
and a lot of teams run this in the red zone.
This post is number one, the one step slant by
Garrett Wilson, and then the little return route by number two.
So now they throw the counter instead of the quick
one step slant, We're going to throw one step, three
steps to the slant and then backpilo. Okay, so we're
gonna counter it. We got one on one against Job Boom.
(20:04):
They run it and Garrett Wilson just dusts them, and
I mean, poor job. It was like job in the
Old Testament. My man was getting trial and tribulation after
trial and tribulation. The guy rallies late in the game
and make some plays. But you got three options to
throw this football excuse me, two options to throw this
football Backpilon with plenty of air and let him run
into it under it, or you throw it right at
(20:26):
him because he's wide open and just get to the
end fast.
Speaker 4 (20:30):
Kind of throws this tweeer.
Speaker 9 (20:32):
So you roll back the tape and see where it
where this ball lands and it's kind of in between
both Pilon, you know what I mean, just kind of
miss it. It's an excellent play call, excellent recognition, excellent
execution other than a physical mistake on the throw, and
he just missed, and guys are gonna miss That happens next.
So then the very next play and this is where
(20:54):
you know it's a crushing blow for a quarterback because
this is we call this mister destiny. If you hit
that play, totally different story, different narrative, we might just
run away with the game, different outcome. You don't, well,
stuff like this happens. So watch big Leonard Williams. Now
we talked about CounterPunch on offense, is a CounterPunch on defense.
They're gonna show five guys down on the line of scrimmage.
Aaron sees the overload to the left, so he's gonna
(21:15):
make a flipper call. So you hear him on the
on the audio, he says, flip or flip or flipper
basically on the offensive line instead of sliding to the field,
slide to the boundary.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
You three.
Speaker 9 (21:24):
I'll handle these next guys on the right, and if
Witherspoon shows up and they bring six.
Speaker 4 (21:29):
On five, no problem. I'll handle them with the throw.
Speaker 9 (21:32):
So what he's looking at is a free runner off
the edge, no safety.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
In the middle of the field.
Speaker 9 (21:37):
This looks, feels and smells like covered zero, which means
they got one more than I can protect. I gotta
ditch this ball and beat Devin Witherspoon off the slot.
He's coming from depth. It's man and man across the board. Perfect,
let's roll. So Aaron Rodgers catches the ball. Bam, I
got my answer.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
Quick throw.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
And before that, DeVante Adams is gonna peak real quick,
just to make sure the quarterback's good. And here comes
Leonard Williams and Jaron Reid. Normally they're rushing. They teach
them in this rush to touch, so you rush to
touch the guy in front of you, and then disengage
and haul out of there. Well, Leonard Williams, are you
kidding me? With this awareness, he can stop the run,
(22:19):
he can rush the passer, and now he's in coverage
reading routes like understanding what route concepts are coming. This
tells me McDonald and this defense are really starting to
get in sync here because he hunts up that quick
en route from Garrett Wilson and picks the ball off.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 9 (22:37):
Those ninety two yards and my man was flying, the
big cat was rolling. Yeah, So it was that really
turned the tide in this game. You hit the first play,
Oh yeah, done deal, you might walk away with it
and sen seattle back home. That happens, and it's oh boy,
now we're reeling. And you factor in some of the drops,
(22:58):
some of the sacks and the second half and then
all the penalties on defense for the Jets defense, Seattle
walk the ball down the field, and that's really where
you end up. But if people are gonna say, you know,
I know the narrative yesterday was man Aaron called out
the other guys. Well, listen to the SoundBite. Listen to
what he says after the throw. To me, this is
taking account accountability for let's run it for the throw.
(23:21):
I think the two play stretch.
Speaker 10 (23:24):
Where Miss Garrett opened tow up twenty eighty seven through
a pick six kind of change the momentum of the game.
I tried to throw about five inside win was little
and consistent and maybe should throw a low flatter. Dudes
might open, but yeah, she shouldn't. I mean, I gotta
hit that. It doesn't matter Whendy had played win before.
(23:46):
It was not consistent, but I gotta hit that.
Speaker 9 (23:48):
Yeah, that bite, I like that, sure, And if you're gonna,
I know the SoundBite that everybody hung on to was that, well,
there's ten other guys out there. Yeah well yeah, I
mean how many times did Jordan and Kobe and all
these other guys Brady call out other people on the team, like,
hey man, there's a team game. Sure, I'm gonna fall
on the sword. That's my bad. I blew it on
the throw bad throw wind or no win? Is my
job to hit it. Yeah, I could have thrown a flatter,
(24:10):
but it sounds pretty contrite to me. So then when
he says stuff about the other players, it's hey man,
we're all in this together. We all got to make
this thing go. And if you don't have eleven out
of eleven doing the right thing on every play, if
you take turns one at a time messing up plays,
you can't win games.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
And that's really where they've been.
Speaker 9 (24:28):
I think that is a result of, you know, they
have to be they're essentially like independent contractors. The head
coach has gone, you know, the turmoil at GM, the
turmoil with the offensive coordinators, and now everybody's kind of
like looking forward. But are we supposed to be this
cohesive unit or are we talking about next year? Already
we've hired a search firm for our new head coach
(24:49):
at GM, Like there's so much going on, it's hard
to just hand them the ball and say, hey, you know,
lace up the cleats and go play for each other.
With all this noise, that's I mean a little ridicul
listen and unrealistic.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
So I want to I want to talk about this.
I am not defending the hit, but I am defending
defensive players that the rules have moved away defensive lineman.
Now if they put their body weight on a quarterback,
I mean, guys can get ejected. And so Trevor Lawrence
slides to me account late.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
It's late.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
It's three games to me, is way too punitive. What's
your taken there?
Speaker 9 (25:28):
It's I think a lot of it is based on
the result. And when you slide last second in a
crowd or in a play that's moving quickly and you
end the play immediately, the guys around you don't totally know.
Now when he gets clipped like that and you see
the after the hit effects of the hit, That's where
I think this became a bigger issue, and people don't want.
Speaker 4 (25:52):
To see that. It's a lot like the Two US stuff.
Speaker 9 (25:55):
You know, when you see that kind of body language
and body movement or lack of control physically from a player,
it's scary. It's scary to people, and you know this
is a violent game and you sign up for these hits.
It's that's a really tough one because it happens so
last second and you know there, what are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (26:15):
Just run up to them and tap them?
Speaker 9 (26:18):
Like, I don't know as a linebacker, what I try
and put myself in both situations? Right, If I'm gonna
slide late, it's tough for a defense to react. Well,
what am I coaching the linebacker to do? Wait for
him and then kind of react to whatever, and then
he runs right by you like and then you get
cut for not making tackle. You know, I don't know
(26:39):
how to fix that situation. You know, way back, what
I was taught is before I learned how to slide,
just dive head first because people get out of your way,
you know what I mean. Like, if you're running and
you dive head first, people think they're gonna get hit,
their knees are gonna get clipped, so they kind of
move and you dictate terms by diving forward. But you
(27:00):
also expose yourself if somebody's ready to hit you. So
you know those things are. They're going to pop up
every once in a while. I don't care what kind
of rules you have, unless it's flag football, you're going
to get that.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
We got a couple of minutes left. You had a
defensive coach. Brady did too. That's happened. I do think
there's an advantage to having if you're a young quarterback
Sean Payton or Andy Reid. I do think it matters.
There's this sense that Chicago has to get an offensive coach.
Do you believe in that?
Speaker 4 (27:31):
You don't think?
Speaker 9 (27:32):
I don't think it's necessarily offensive or defensive. Coach contingent
on Caleb being successful, I don't. I think part of
the issue there is somebody who's strong enough to mitigate
a lot of the media fodder and put out fires.
Case in point, Dan Campbell. Now that the Lions are
(27:52):
this really relevant team and a juggernaut in the NFL
and their powerhouse. Well, the photo that Jamiir Gibbs put
out the other day, right, I guarantee you behind the scene,
I can all but guarantee I'm not there.
Speaker 1 (28:04):
They're not happy.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
What I would be.
Speaker 9 (28:06):
Pissed if my player did that, ye, and I'd have
him in the office immediately and we'd have a quick conversation.
And we're not going to do that anymore now Publicly,
I got you, and we're good. Don't worry, but we
need to have a conversation, and maybe the whole team
needs to be in on this, and this is a
you know, this is important, have a little come to
Jesus meeting and move on. But the way he handled
(28:29):
it publicly was perfect, and they need somebody like that
in Chicago, which means they finally have to get the
Holy Trinity right right, The Father the son and the
Holy Spirit. They all have to be rowing the boat
in the same direction. Okay, so Ryan Poles, whoever the
next head coach is, and this quarterback, this head coach
is going to inherit a GM and a quarterback. But
(28:49):
they all have to get on the same page. So
I think that's going to be an interesting hire. But
I don't think it's necessarily offensive or defensive.
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Okay, you know, Demiko Ryan to turn Houston around.
Speaker 9 (29:02):
And that's the other thing, Like, you get a coordinator
who's strong enough to handle the quarterback development, who's been
around it long enough, with a head coach that doesn't necessarily,
you know, infiltrate that offensive room. He'll assert his head
coaching ability and you know, trump cart if you will.
But hey, offense, you do your thing. You know how
to groom this quarterback. You guys do it, handle it.
(29:25):
I'll handle the defense and handle everything publicly and take
pressure off you guys. That's that's really the goal.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
USC.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
We got a minute left.
Speaker 4 (29:34):
Oh, let me keep going about the Bears.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Then I know it's painful, painful.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Ouch.
Speaker 9 (29:40):
No, that was tough man, young kid playing early and
trying to figure it out and two pick six as
that one hurts.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
It does, but you know it's a good brand.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
Oh it's a great brand.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
You didn't have these roles when you were there.
Speaker 9 (29:58):
Go a couple of times the late in the career
there we were like we were bummed about the Rose
Bowl because we thought we should be in the National
champions Jim, you know. So it was a different time.
But that's all right, they'll be all right.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
You wouldn't be transfer portal though, would you. Would you
have been a portal guy? You are so cow kid.
You just lose.
Speaker 9 (30:17):
You lose a lot of those stories about players developing
over time, learning from the guy in front of them,
and persevering.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
Through a little adversity.
Speaker 9 (30:24):
So if it's constantly just move on to the next
thing when times get tough, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
We'll see you tomorrow.
