Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
We talked about this earlier.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
The NBA has always been a cyclical league, and the
last five MVPs have all been bigs six to eleven
or bigger and international players. Denver is big, now, Boston
got bigger. Now Phoenix is big, Milwaukee is big, the
Lakers are big, and the Warriors doubled down on old
and small with Chris Paul. So what does it all
(00:46):
mean we bring in Chris Mannix. You know, Chris I said,
no GM in the league is saying to themselves, I
want to be older and smaller. So it feels like
the first of a couple moves for the Warrior years,
doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Well.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
I think the driving force behind making this move had
less to do with Chris Paul and more to do
with freeing the Warriors up of the financial obligations.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Oh to Jordan Poole.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Certainly, all that transpired last season with Jordan Poole, the
incident with Draymond, which was not his fault, but his
subsequent uneven play, especially in the playoffs. I think that
led the Warriors to believe it was better for their
long term future to move off this contract and take
on a shorter one. Chris Paul, while being a big name,
(01:41):
is also a shorter contract. This upcoming year is the
only year of his left of his guaranteed deal. So
for Golden State, yeah, you get Chris Paul, and that's
an obvious storyline, But for the Warriors, it's much more
about future financial flexibility and making a deal like this.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Okay, so Hornets take Brandon Miller over Scoot Henderson. Now,
Scoot Henderson is more dynamic, He'll probably be on the
Sports Center more. He's gonna be He's got a Derrick
Rose quality that you just can't It's magnetic, right. But
I would argue, if you start looking at the best
twenty five players ever, there's only a couple of small
(02:21):
guys Isaiah and Steph and that I get Brandon Miller
as a long skillful Like people are like, what about
Scoot and my take I mean guess Charlotte was disappointed
some of the fans and my takeaways it's a big
man's league, is it not.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Well, the prototypical player of today, yes, Brandon Miller kind
of fits into that archetype. He's a sixty six sixty
seven Paul George type swingman. And if he develops into
that type of player, I would say it's a great
decision by Charlotte. But my question coming into this draft
with that pick was would the Hornets pick the best
(03:01):
player available or would they pick the best player to
play opposite of LaMelo ball. Now, the horns will sit
there and tell you that they believe they took the
best guy on their board, that there was unanimity in
their draft room about taking Brandon Miller. But if you
asked around the league, Colin and I talked to you know,
half a dozen or more calend evaluators over the last
(03:21):
couple of days, and most of them say they would
take Scoot Henderson with a blank slate, that Scoot Henderson
was the best player available. And look, history is kind
of littered with bad examples of teams drafting for need.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
Yeah, and not the top talent, most.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Notably just a couple of years ago, when Golden State
drafted James Wiseman over LaMelo Ball.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
I mean, if Golden.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
State didn't have Steph Curry and Klay Thompson already in place,
they would have taken LaMelo Ball with that pick. They did, though,
so they took James Wiseman thought he might develop.
Speaker 5 (03:53):
He didn't.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
He turned out to be a toxic acid for them
at the very end. So I think we'll find out,
obviously in the coming year if Brandon Miller was the
right guy to play opposite LaMelo Ball, or should they
have taken Scoot Henderson regardless of LaMelo's place with the team.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
The you know, the Porzingis move to the Celtics. Here's
where I believe it makes them better. They get jammed
up offensively, and he can break those logjams. Just say, dude,
go get a bucket, and he does from the perimeter
down low. Also, it's getting to be a bigger league
Jannis coming back strong, Yokich Embiid like we look at
our MVPs big as in.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
So I like the move.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
It does not answer the point guard dilemma where I
don't think Marcus was ever a true facilitator, though he
has tremendous value for Memphis maturity, toughness defense. So I
look at the Celtics today and I takeaway I think
they're better on the offensive end. I'm not sure they're
a better team because Porsing has also has a history
of getting hurt in Boston. How is it playing, how
do you view it and how is it viewed.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Well?
Speaker 4 (04:54):
I think there still is another deal to come for
the Celtics because they can't went to next season with
the backcourt they currently have in place. Right now, you're
looking at Derek White being the starting point guard, Malcolm
Brogden either as a starter or a backup, and then
you have got reserves in Peyton Pritchard and Sam Howser.
Dirk White for the Celtics is fine as a starting
(05:16):
point guard. That's They're okay with that. But Malcolm Brogden
Colin Obviously, the severity of that injury was enough to
scare off the Clippers, who don't care about Malcolm Brogden's
contract and desperately need a playmaker to add to that mix.
That tells me the injury is significant and could cost
Malcolm brogen some games going into next season, So you've
got to add some other piece to that backcourt. And
(05:37):
when you look at this deal, it's not it's really
Porzingis for Smart.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
Those are the key pieces here.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
But as a result of Porzingis being acquired, it's more
likely than not the Celtic's gonna.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Lose Grant Williams. And Grant Williams, for all.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
His flaws in the second half of last season, was
an invaluable player to the Celtics over the last couple
of years. They don't make the finals a year and
a half ago if Grant Williams isn't there in Game
seven against Milwaukee making all those shots. So you're really
talking about trading Christaps Porzingis for Grant Williams Marcus Smart
(06:11):
and getting back a couple of first round draft picks
with Porzingis in return. That to me feels more like
a lateral move until we see what else is to.
Speaker 5 (06:20):
Come, you know.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Scoot Henderson Dame, I mean, if you look at Portland's
roster now it's the Warriors without the trophies. It's guard
heavy and they're really really good guards. Simon's Scoot Dame like,
those are really really good players, some young, some old.
Once you I said this yesterday. This is not the
Packers drafting Jordan Love who needed years to practice. This
(06:45):
would be the Packers drafting Justin Herbert and Aaron Rodgers
shows up in the first practice and like he's bigger
and stronger than I am, you know what I mean? Like,
I look at this and I think it's nice to
say they'll get along.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
This is gonna work, is it?
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Chris?
Speaker 6 (07:02):
Now?
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Now it look this is not going to be something
that gets triggered over the next couple of days. That's
simply not how Damian Lillard operates. You know, there's a
lot of sourcing that goes on with Damian Lillard when
the reality is Damian Lillard, to anyone that's wanted to
talk to him, has spelled out exactly what he wants
(07:23):
to see happen. I spoke to Damian Lillard as recently
as March, and we talked just about this situation unfolding
where if the team was not in a position over
the summer to be competitive, whatever that might mean, conference competitive,
championship competitive, Damian Lillard said, me and Joe Cron, the
general manager, are gonna sit down and figure out what's
(07:44):
best for the franchise. Now, we're not quite yet at
the point where that conversation needs to happen. We still
at free agency and the Blazers intend to be pretty
active in trying to make a deal to upgrade their roster.
They were active before the draft trying to pry O
Giataobi and Pascal Siakam, among others, away from Toronto. So
they are going to look for talent to make them
(08:05):
more competitive. But if they don't get that guy, or
if they don't get those guys, there will be a
conversation with the Blazers front office and Damian Lillard, and
more likely than not, the outcome of that conversation is
Damian little bit will become available and they'll work together
to find him a new team.
Speaker 2 (08:22):

Speaker 1 (08:31):
You know, since I started watching sports regularly, the eight
most hyped athletes I've ever seen before they arrived were
Serena Lebron, Tiger, Bryce Harper, Trevor Lawrence, Ken Griffy Junior,
John Elway, way Back, and Wemby, and seven of those
eight have hit. I don't think the coverage is over
the top. I've never seen a young player that has
(08:53):
that many moves. Ever, I've never seen anything like it.
What did you make of the coverage? Is it too hyperbolic?
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Last night?
Speaker 6 (09:00):
Now?
Speaker 5 (09:00):
I don't think it's too hyperbolic.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Everyone I've talked to about Victor Webbin Yama has used
lofty language to describe him, has done little short of
declaring it would be hard to see him anything but
at all time great, Like this kid has everything.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
And I'm in New.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
York this week, Colin, and you know, being around the
Webbin Yama scene all week long, where he's been at
Yankee Stadium, he's been on Good Morning America, He's doing
all these these NBA events. There's a maturity to him
that I think is going to make him a pretty
special guy, a pretty special player. And he's going, of course,
to a situation that is almost idyllic for a player
(09:45):
like this. He is going to be to work under
Greg Popovich for at least the next couple of years.
He's already talked to the Spurs about working with Tim
Duncan and with David Robinson to amplify his game. There's
with his talent, his physical tools, his mindset, it would
probably take a major injury or two to derail him
(10:06):
from becoming a great player.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Yeah, it is something, all right, Chris Mannix, my friend.
It is great seeing you as Owa's in New York
on the spot as always. Thanks man, you got it. Yeah,
when you look at this in our business is that.
I understand fans pushing back on, Hey, you guys are
(10:28):
over the top. I really really do. But boy, this
coverage is to me warranted. Like basketball is, of all
the sports, I think it's the easiest to really see talent.
I always told the story years ago I was at
some girls, young girls, seven eight nine year old girls
(10:48):
basketball tournament and there was like seven courts. It was
in Hartford, and I sat down next to one of
these coaches and we were just sitting there talking and
after about ninety seconds, I'm like, who's that small point guard?
He goes, Oh, she's a seventh grader. She's the best
player here. Well, I'm not a scout. She was in
seventh grade. Basketball. Talent jumps through the TV screen like,
(11:11):
it's really easy to spot it. It's you the ball,
the basket. It's like soccer. You can see Polisic at
fourteen fifteen. You're like, oh, yeah, that's different. There are
some sports. Football is one of them where your body
needs to grow. You're just not ready to play. That's
why there's so many late bloomers in football. That's why
half the NFL is undrafted. And you know, you see
(11:33):
that in other sports. But there are sports like you know, tennis,
there are sports like basketball. There's not a lot of
late bloomers who really pop at twenty eight. You can
kind of see it early. And just the maturity. The
other thing about Victor wembin Yama, and this matters what
derails young stars immaturity and injuries. Zion both, Joah Morant
(11:59):
both like that. That's what you worry about. That would
ever derail a young start they get hurt. Victor certainly
could and they just can't handle it. Zion Jaw just
can't handle it. It's too much and I feel bad for him,
But you see, that's not going to be the issue
like that. You can just cross that one out. You
may get hurt, but I don't think it's over the top.
(12:21):
I just you can see it. You don't have to
be a scout. I'm watching Last night they showed a
three minute, two minute, three minute video reel on ESPN
or in the Draft, and it was stuff I hadn't seen.
I mean, it's the whole bag. I mean that kid
has left hand, right hand, short outside moves, lean in,
lean out. It's like, all right, I've seen enough. Don't
need to be a scout. That guy's gonna be good.
J Mack with the news, No, no, turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
This is the herd Line News.
Speaker 6 (12:49):
Do you see those twins last night?
Speaker 5 (12:51):
I'm in and on Sorrow.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
I hope I said his name right. Thompson both picked
in the top five. Amon went to the Rockets on
Sarrow to the Pistons. First time brothers have been selected
in the top five of the same draft since the
seven nineteen seventy six merger. I think he had the
Lopez twins previously. Yeah, there might have been one other
pair that I'm missing, but I don't know. These are
(13:12):
two rebuilding teams. The Rockets have a lot of cap space.
It sounds like they want to go big game hunting.
Perhaps Fred bran Vliet they throw some money at him.
I think they'll probably try Dylan Brooks, maybe Chris Middleton.
I don't know, how do you think the Twins fit
in there to the Rockets and Pistons.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Detroit's got some interesting pieces I like, and I feel
like Detroit's had lots of interesting pieces for the last
fifteen years.
Speaker 6 (13:38):
And none of it matters e Wiseman.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
I think, yeah, No, I mean they've got four or
five Kate Cunningham, They've got pieces. I don't do they
have enough guys who can put the ball in the basket.
But I mean they've got some young talent.
Speaker 6 (13:50):
And Detroit's a really good basketball so they They got
a new coach though that cares Monty Williams massive contract.
He's gonna be around for a while.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, So I don't know.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
I have such respect for Detroit and in terms of
their sports passion, I mean, I feel bad for Tiger fans.
And when I was a kid growing up, Detroit was
one of the three to four best baseball cities in
the country and they've just been so neglected and poorly
run that at some point fans are tired of watch
and to lose.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
How about that, Alan Trammel, Lou Whittaker double.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
Grew up with it.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Yeah, chet Lemon wasn't who the center it was it chet.
Speaker 6 (14:19):
Lemon was on the team a lot of I played
a lot of RBI baseball.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Who is the center fielder?
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Iron, I'm tying to think, but I watched I like you,
But Buddy Bell was the third baseman, the big arm.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
I couldn't name Jack Jack Morris. Could you five Detroit Tigers.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Well, they've been very poorly run for a long time,
and at some point even diehard fans don't want to
watch a second tier product. I can have a favorite restaurant.
If I go for four straight bad meals, I'm not
going again.
Speaker 6 (14:44):
Next up the forty nine ers. They have one of
the best offenses in terms of skill position players, so
many weapons that could take over a game. That may
mean players don't get the stats they want every week,
but George Kittle doesn't see that as an issue. As
loved as we're winning games and or feeding the right
guy to the ball, I'm never gonna get mad. If
Cimac has twenty carries and ten catches for three hundred yards.
(15:06):
It's really fun to be on a team that does
have a problem of too many mounts to feed. Because
coach in Hahn does such a great job of scheming
everybody into certain plays, and it's really just fun to
be part of an offense that has so much talent
on it.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
And that's the other thing about Trey Lance.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Look at a talent and when he was given opportunities,
he completed fifty five percent of his throats. Like that's
why you have to understand there are certain things that
we do in our life that are imperfect, like you
can be. I've never had a I've never gotten in
a wreck as a driver in a car. Some of
it's luck, but most of it is I don't drive
over the speed limit. Like there are certain things I
can control in life. I can control my diet.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
I can largely drive safely, you know. But there are
things you can't control, and that is accumulation of talent.
In all these sports you just have to bake in.
You're gonna miss on people. But I just acknowledge it
and move off it, and I think it's okay. Like
it's not a not stock picking, it's not a perfect business.
You can't know every thing about every company. When you
(16:06):
pick stalks. You have to bake in some whiffs.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
But at the same time, remember, you've got to get
the right skill position players who are gonna be okay
with this strategy. For instance, Stefan Diggs probably doesn't work
on the forty nine ers because he wants the ball.
Who's the running back on the Ravens Dobbins, he was
all ticked off remember last season that he wasn't getting
the ball. And like, you've got to pick the right guys.
From Deebo to Kittle McCaffrey, they seem kind of selfless,
(16:30):
which works in such a great dynamic offense. And finally,
the Birmingham Stallions head coach Skip Holtz has been named
the twenty twenty three USFL Coach of the Year. Last season,
he led the team to a USFL title, followed up
with an eight and two record this year. Stallions faced
the New Orleans Breakers for the South Division title Sunday
at seven Eastern on Fox for a chance to defend
(16:52):
their championship. Skip Holtz, he was a good college football
coach as well.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
Absolute let me East Carolina.
Speaker 6 (16:57):
There you go, Bingo Lou Holtz back in the eighties.
I got a buddy in South Bend this weekend texting
him some information. How does Sam Hartman look in the
New Notre Dame offense? Always trying to get gems, you know,
bring something to the table.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
That's exactly why we brought you on here.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
You're you're uncut Gems.
Speaker 6 (17:15):
Oh that was an overrated movie, by the way, right,
a little overrated? Yeah, but I think it.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Was there were a realistic part Adam Sandler. He's not
Steve Carrell. Steve Carell is the most underrated person in
the Holliday He's funny, he's brilliant, he can be melodramatic.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
He's absolutely brilliant.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
And when Adam Sandler did Uncut Gems, my takeaway was, bro,
get out of the silly stuff, get serious.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
You're really good.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
It's weird. I thought he was good in the movie.
I just didn't like the movie. It was into gamble,
you know what I thought.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
I thought it was hard. It was a hard movie
to like him watch. But I thought Sandler was great,
And I'm like, this dude needs to do like remember
when Jim Carrey pivoted till more serious stuff. Yeah, and
it's like like like when Steve Carrell pivoted serious stuff,
You're like, holy hell, Steve Carell's unbelievable.
Speaker 6 (18:00):
It's kind of like on this show when you pivot
away from sports and talk about politics, people are in museums.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
People you really love my politics?
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Yeah, I love when you bring up Joe Rogan.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
I mean it's based on the social media response. That's
why they watched, not for my sports takes. J Mack
with the news.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping time the

Speaker 1 (19:36):
All. We've had quite a week, the NBA Draft week,
and that was last night. A lot of trades, a
lot of picks, a lot of stuff happening this week,
and that the writers are furiously trying to get the
headlines out and the stories right. But Jmax already got them.
So let's go to my favorite segment of the week,
Tomorrow's headlines Today. A lot going on in northern calif
(20:00):
what's the headline for the Warriors next season?
Speaker 6 (20:05):
Well, you know I don't like this Chris Paul trade. Obviously,
I ranted about it earlier. I think it's only going
to get worse. The headline will be from Golden State
to Golden Girls. Warriors retire early. This team is old
and colin. There is a nuclear scenario out there. A
couple of writers have floated it. I said earlier. The
Sacramento ki Kings have freed up thirty million cap space
(20:26):
could go up to like thirty four million. Okay. Their
coach is Mike Brown, former Warriors coach, defensive guy. There
is a scenario where they make a big splash play
for Draymond Green and say, hey, we got a young team.
We are what the Warriors used to be. Draymond come
over to us in Sacramento, play alongside some bonus. I
know he had the history with him with a stomp.
But there is a scenario where they lose Draymond Green
(20:47):
because the Warriors cannot afford him if they want to
continue to play Klay Thompson. This team's getting old fast.
I don't know that they can write the ship. This
is a tumultuous offseason. I don't think it goes great
next year.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Well, I will say I tend to be pro Warriors.
If the Chris Paul move is it?
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Then I think you're right. Then I think they're just small, old.
Speaker 6 (21:05):
Slower and that playing is like a playing team. If
they barely missed the play in this year by like
two games, and they lost Pool shooting, they got worse
losing Jordan Pool. I know people want to bash him,
and he's he can fill in and give you twenty any.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
And they got older and slower.
Speaker 6 (21:20):
Yeah, an guy who's got a ugly history of injuries.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
All Right, Tomorrow's headlines today the runners up the Miami Heat.
What will be the headline for the Miami Heat next?
Speaker 6 (21:32):
So you know, I'm a draft guy, and uh I
tried to crowbar a lot of draft in here, but
it's tough. My sleeper in the draft, the headline will
be welcome to Miami Heat. Add fresh prints from bel
Air Jimei Hakkezeah from UCLA A steal. He went higher
than everybody thought. He was projected late twenties. Yeah, he
goes eighteen to Miami. Colin could he have a better
fit with Jimmy Butler in Miami? Seriously, that is as
(21:55):
good of a guy to learn.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
He's also played several years in college, so he's like
a grown up physically ready to play.
Speaker 6 (22:01):
Should be in the rotation pretty quickly. Yeah, not a
big learning curve. Now, if they don't go get Damian Lillard,
everybody will write the heat off. But I would not
be so fast to do that. Caleb Martin one more
year on the contract. We'll see what happens with Struce
and Vincent Duncan Robinson still around. I think this Miami team,
which had a lot of injuries last year. I saw
they missed the third most games I believe in the
regular season. You saw them in the playoffs. This team's tough.
(22:23):
I love Hawke as I think Miami is on the uptick.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
And let me also say this about Miami, so again,
very good team. They went and got an older college
player who will be in their rotation, no question, your one.
We actually watched a lot of this kid. He can
get a bucket and he's a hustler. He'll fit in
Miami great. He is a grinder, he's on the floor,
he's a hustler. They got a really good player and
(22:48):
they got to the finals without Tyler Hero.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
It's a great point.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
So you're going to bring back this kid can get
a bucket. You're gonna bring back two offensive weapons. I
know we're all gonna sell our Miami stock when they
don't get Dame.
Speaker 6 (22:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
I think you're right. Miami is better today if they
keep Hero and this kids.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
They're still top four in these for sure.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
Oh absolutely, I think so.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
All right, Tomorrow's headlines today, Well, the Wizards got Tias Jones,
they got Jordan Poole. It's a rebuild with a former
Clipper executive. What do you make of a Wizards?
Speaker 6 (23:18):
You know, I have a weird collection of guys. I
like Zach Lavine. Jordan Poole's in the mix. I like
Jordan Poole, but the headline will be dirty pool Wizards
have worst record with Jordan Listen, I am a Jordan
Poole guy. Yeah, I'm very curious to see if he
is gonna lead the league maybe in scoring next year.
I'm not even kidding. When you look at that roster,
(23:39):
it's like Johnny Davis, Tias Jones, Denny Avdia, a lot
of guys you haven't heard of or haven't done much.
Corey Kispert their center. Gafford, like Jordan Poole is gonna
have the green light from this.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
We both think he's a scorer.
Speaker 6 (23:51):
I mean he might.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
When I suggest that he go to the Celtics, people
made him sound like he was a dud. He's gonna
average twenty four a night.
Speaker 6 (23:58):
Somebody's got a score, and you the pace and the numbers,
like they're gonna put up over one hundred a game.
Obviously there's a chance Pool's like a thirty point a game. Guy,
I'm not even exaggerating. He could score.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 6 (24:07):
Now they're gonna be bad aggressively so and with a
purpose because they're gonna get a draft pick. A lot
of people want to bang on the Wizards this week.
They've got a strong week column that Tias Jones pick up.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
Okay, I think that's the He's the best in all
the moves this week. That's the one nobody's just got.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
He's got one year left on his deal. So come February,
if you lose your point guard and you're a contender,
let me go get tyas Jones. I'll give up a
first round pick for him. He is that good, only
a fourteen million dollar deal. He was good when John
Morant was always out.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
All right, all right, Tomorroways had lines today blazers all
eyes on Dame and Scoot Henderson. They got some young talent.
What say you, so this is the one. I'm taking
a chance. Brussard didn't mention it. I don't think Buker's
on it. It's not out there. It's a bit of
a left field.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
Like when Chris Paul went to the worst nobody really
had that it was Clippers or Lakers. The headline will
be it's all Greek to me, Dame to rap in
Midwestern accent. I like Dame and a sign and trade
for Chris Middleton. Chris Middleton goes to Portland, is the
veteran in the locker room, thirty years old. Sign him
to a three or four year deal. He doesn't give
you an issue at guard. He's a forward. He's slides
(25:13):
right in. You can play your Simons, Sarp Sharp and
Scoot and give me. Yeah, you could say, you know what,
Jeremy Grant, thank you for your service.
Speaker 5 (25:21):
You're out.
Speaker 6 (25:21):
You got Nurkic Middleton. You could play three guards. There's
a world where Portland's not that bad losing Damian Lillard. Now,
if you're Damon, you go to Milwaukee, Colin Dame, Jannis,
you bring back Drew Holliday. Remember Dame's not a great defender.
Holiday can guard in the way that Clay defended the
best of opposing guard. Holiday gets that assignment. You stretch
the floor with Dame, you bring back brook Lopez. Does
(25:43):
that do anything for you Dame and Yannis? Oh?
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Absolutely, I've said, Damon, MBI, if you could give me
Drew Holliday, Dame Janis.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
I think they have to they have to make.
Speaker 6 (25:55):
They got to keep brook Lopez, that's key. But those
are your big three, I don't I think you're probably
better than when you had Middleton. Dame is a better
player than Middleton. Absolutely, yeah, I think it would work great.
Milwaukee needs a splash year. Jannis comes September, can sign
that extension. And if he does not, then you start worrying.
Oh geez, do we not do enough to keep you honest?
Worth keeping an eye on?
Speaker 1 (26:17):
It's interesting, Okay, Tomorrow's headlines today, Bradley Beale's now a son.
What's the headline for Phoenix? A team I like more
than you.
Speaker 6 (26:28):
I think you and I are above market on them.
And you know, we pegged the headlines to games and
events and there really aren't many coming up, So We're
doing an NBA championship headline. The headline will be sun
Kissed Big Three. Give Larry O'Brien a big smooch. I've
got the Suns winning the title next year. Obviously some
things can change in free agency. But Colin, why are
(26:49):
people selling Bradley?
Speaker 3 (26:50):
That's right? You like this move.
Speaker 5 (26:51):
I love this move.
Speaker 6 (26:52):
Unbelievable Bradley beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. How do
you defend that?
Speaker 5 (26:56):
SA?
Speaker 3 (26:57):
So what do you do with Ayton? Who you can keep?
Speaker 6 (27:00):
I'm with you if you could flip him and get
two or three pieces, like a Miles Turner and a
really good bench, a TJ. McConnell, a backup point guard.
You know, you just need guys to eat minutes. You
know how you get like a fifth starter in MLB
to eat innings just because so he's just an innings eater.
That's what you get here with guys that come off
the bench or in the trade for eight And because
you can't have Booker and Durant playing seventy five eighty games,
(27:21):
that just doesn't work, and then in the playoffs another
twenty that's too much.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
You know, it's.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
You know, last night, people talked about Charlotte should have
taken Scoot because he's better. I tend to be take talent,
figure out the fit later. Like the Miami Heatles didn't
really fit ever and they got the four straight finals. Like,
just just get players. That's why what was interesting in
the draft last night. So people say Scoot Henderson is
(27:49):
a better talent than Brandon Miller. But my takeaway, and
I was talking to Jason timp he works with me
at the Volume. He's a brilliant basketball mind, and he said,
of the four prototypes of players in the NBA, the
most overrated is the young, dynamic point guard. They usually
are poor defenders. Wall was, Westbrook was, Marburry was, Jahn
(28:13):
Morant's not a great defender, so Derek Rose. So they're
usually not great defenders. They don't rebound generally, although Westbrook's.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Pretty he can get up.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Yeah, And because they're so prolific athletically, many never really
develop a shot because they don't have to. And that's
really true. Scoot can't shoot either, So and that's not
saying you can't get better. But my argument is I
get Brandon Miller over Scoot. Scoot's more dynamic, but I
do think as the league is getting bigger one and secondly,
(28:47):
I think there's I think there's really a moment now
where you have to win the NBA as an executive,
many things are in less drama, maturity, size, internet national players.
Are we reaching a point and I've been preaching this
for seven years that the most over valued player is
(29:10):
the small, dynamic, can't shoot point guard who doesn't defend,
doesn't elevate others, but everybody falls in love with on
social because he's dynamic. I can't wait to watch Scoot
and so it was interesting when you talk about the
Phoenix Suns is they don't really have a classic point guard,
but what they have is mature adults who can hit shots.
(29:32):
And you're not gonna get Kevin Durant's not that much drama.
He talks about it on Twitter. To your point, I
the all the teams, all the good teams. I'm gonna
wait for Milwaukee. Did they all get better? Boston better,
Phoenix better, Denver st gonna be continued to be good?
Milwaukee get better. I think Miami your point, Miami last
(29:54):
night got better. It's interesting, like are we getting a
separation of the have and have nots in the league
where we talk about all this new stuff, but basically
all the good teams got better.
Speaker 6 (30:05):
Yeah, you don't want to be in the middle class.
You're just drafting around like twelve to seventeen every year.
You want to bottom out like what the Wizards are doing,
and then you can get the picks.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
And as of this morning, who are the top five
teams in the league? So you have Phoenix one?
Speaker 6 (30:18):
No, I mean I think okay, Phoenix won Denver two.
I go Boston three. I can't say Milwaukee's four right now.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
I would say Miami if Tyler Herro and the rookie play,
which they.
Speaker 6 (30:30):
Will, Yeah, Philadelphia or Miami.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
I don't trust Philadelphia, so.
Speaker 6 (30:36):
Miami four and then La sorry, Sacramento Kings five.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
So I think Milwaukee and Sacramento. I will wait until
they make it.
Speaker 6 (30:45):
I think we gotta wait TBD and.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
It could be next week.
Speaker 6 (30:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Yeah, so I think I think Milwaukee could be really good.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
Forget they lost in the first round for one.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
Oh, they were just a number one seed. Yah, they
just looked old.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
We should have figured it out because when we watch
Boston play Milwaukee in the regular season, Austin made them
look old. And then we watched in the playoffs with
Miami do them like they're just way too old?
Speaker 6 (31:04):
And oh, by the way, John Morant's Grizzlies were a
second seed in the West. You know he's out for
twenty five games. But Marcus Smart edition is massive for them.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
I love well, But the problem is when you let
go of Tias Jones. If John Morant was gone and
Tias played, there's an argument their net ratings better when
Tias starts and Jaw doesn't. But when you give up
when Jaw's not there and Tias, they're not going to
be explosive enough at point. They're they're going to struggle
to find points. So I don't think Memphis is I
(31:35):
think they'll take an early step.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
It's weird going into a season and the Warriors and
Lakers are not in the top five, and Lakers hopefully
can get there with an addition I Warriors. Man, I'm
really just depressed.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
It is interesting.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
It's always crazy to me when people say, how can
you get rid of Klay Thompson. You paid him two
hundred and fifty million, He was great and you paid
him greatly, But there's no disloyalty. It's not like like
the Dak Prescott where he was great for four or
five years, are really really good and he hadn't made
the money yet because he was a fourth round pick.
Clay was paid appropriately. I don't feel like if I've
(32:10):
paid you, you've rewarded me. I've changed your life. I
don't feel like, well, this is Disloyd. I don't feel
any of that. Clay has been great, but everything has
a time on it. Everything has an expiration date. And
so when the player gets older, it becomes how well
has he kept his body up and how valuable is
(32:33):
he still? Steph and Draymond are still elite at what
they do. Clay's not as Elie.
Speaker 6 (32:38):
Would Clay take a big pay cut.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
I think that's the only way I would keep it.
Speaker 6 (32:42):
You want to go to Washington and make a lot
of money.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Yeah, I mean at some point he's got a real
life in the Bay. All right, we'll see it Monday.
First things first. Next, it's the Herd
