Speaker 2 (00:23):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hello, Welcome in side our three, The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Harmon. Steve de Sager in for Harmon tonight,
and uh before we get to John Paul Morosi for
all the latest news in Major League Baseball. Jackie Robinson Day,
an update on John Morant, who rolled his ankle taking
a jumper against the Warriors in the third quarter.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Not a dirty play. He goes up with a jumper from.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
About seven or eight feet out and he comes down
and he lands on Buddy Heal's ankle.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
He rolled his ankle a.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Little bit, was down on the floor for a couple
of minutes, was helped off, then moved his ankle around
a little bit. Was able to come back on the floor.
But then he has left the floor and now he
is walking to or being led to the locker room area.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Being looked at in the tunnel at minimum. But he's
off the court. Yeah, and it's late third quarter in
this game. And again, this is not an elimination game.
It's the battle for the seven seed. Memphis would not
be out if they lose it. But it's a close game.
He's not on the court, and as you mentioned, it
was just a common foul, nothing dirty. After they reviewed
the video.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, it looked like he was going to be able
to come back to play, but then it looked like
they wanted to get him looked at again.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
And right now he's being looked at.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
It he's taken a couple of pills and he's like
standing just off the entrance to the tunnel, like he's
being surrounded by medical personalities, drinking out of his water bottle.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
And again, he just took a couple of pills.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
And I don't know what it does mean he's gonna
come back on the fly. You would think he would
go to the locker room, but maybe not all the
way to the locker room.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I don't know what's gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I think you're right. I think if this was a
second quarter injury. He'd be in the locker room and
you'd have a long rest and they could do whatever
brief therapy on the ankle. Now he's not leaving the stage,
so to speak, all.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Right, So we'll have more on this coming up in
a few minutes. Again, a seven point lead for the
Warriors over the Grizzlies. Still a lot of time left here,
just under a minute a half to go in the
third quarter. But today a big day in Major League
Baseball as MLB marked seventy eight years since Jackie Robinson
broke the color barrier. Everybody in Major League Baseball tonight
(02:34):
wearing their uniforms with Jackie Robinson's number forty two on it.
Jazz Chisholm even wore his pants like Jackie Robinson used
to wear his pants. A great day celebrating Jackie Robinson
and his legacy as he continues to inspire people inside
and outside the major leagues. Joining us now I'm the
hot line for more on this MLB Network insider extraordinary.
(02:57):
He is also co host of Sterns Pope, The Great
Morning Show, taking the world by storm with his college
roommate David Stearns. It is John Paul Morosi is on
Twitter on Twitter at.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
Yeah, I'm doing great, good evening, and Happy Jackie Robinson Day.
It is a special day that we reflect every year,
and as Dave Roberts said today, it is not just
a one off day. And Dave Roberts said this today
that it's something what we have to understand on a
daily base and appreciate that what Jackie Robinson did for
our country. And I loved the detail as well that
(03:37):
Rachel Robinson, the widow of Jackie Robinson one hundred two
years young, was celebrating the occasion today at the Jackie
Robinson Museum in Brooklyn, New York. So I have this
great recollection of seeing Rachel Robinson up there on the
dais when when President Bush was honored at the Little
League World Series a couple of years ago Williamsport, Pa.
(03:58):
It just is she is like the matriarch of baseball
and so regal in every way, and to know that
she was there and able to celebrate her husband's legacy
just I think really a blessing for everybody in baseball
today that Rachel Robinson was part of it.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Again, John, if I could jump in, I must see
it on behalf of Jason, since he said this earlier
in the show, he's under the impression that the Padres
are only going to be playing home games the first
two months of the season and therefore be undefeated the
first two months of the season.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
I looked it up.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
There actually going to be a Yankee Stadium in a
few weeks. I'm tempted to say that in my recent recollection,
I don't be I don't remember being them being this
great for this long. Let me put it that way.
Am I seeing what I'm seeing? Are you seeing this
out of this roster?
Speaker 5 (04:47):
First place in the National League West? And it's been
that way for a while now in this season. Certainly
we know how good the Dodgers are, the Giants, by
the way, off to a great start too, But the
Padres that they've been the class of Major League Baseball
so far, and by the way, they'll probably get you
Darvish back at some point. He's on the comeback trail too.
Even with Jackson Marril on the injured list for the
(05:09):
time being, they still continue to play so well. I
can confirm exclusively here at Fox Sports Radio, the Padres
are scheduled to play in my home state of Michigan
next week, so I will do my faster report if
in fact they actually do play a road game next week.
But it's an interesting lineup and it's one that's powered
(05:30):
I think in a lot of ways by Fernando Tatis Junior,
just the way that he has played catalyzing this team.
He's already scored sixteen runs. He's scoring a run of game,
and at that rate that is pretty exceptional. Six home
runs already, he's stolen six bases for someone. Certainly he
missed time with the suspension, and that was a period
(05:51):
of time where a lot of people around the game
wondered if he was going to ever be the player
that we expected him to be. Well, right now he's
giving a resounding answer. You think about how last year's
postseason unfolded and the series against the Dodgers. They nearly
not knocked the Dodgers out before the Dodgers won too
straight to advance and then and then play the Mets
in the NLCS. But I think Tatis in his own way,
(06:13):
and he plays the game with this Juan de viv
He's always so demonstrative, with a lot of energy, and
it almost feels like when he's playing that he doesn't
have a worry or a care in the world. And
yet I do think that his competitiveness, he's probably taking
a look around the game and seeing us rightfully talking
(06:34):
a whole lot about Otani and Judge and some of
the great players of modern times. And Bobby Witt Junior
is a sending Listen, we've got a who now plays
the New York Mets. I believe to play information is correct,
So I think Tati says, hey, I belong in this
(06:55):
conversation too, And and the way that he's played so
far this season is certainly affirming that that's fat.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Well, I'll tell you John Paul, who I feel really
bad for, and we talked about this earlier, is I
feel bad for the Rockies. Right They're already going to
be eleven and a half games out of first place,
and they got the three best teams in baseball right now,
I had a Dodgers, Giants, Podres they might not win
three games in the NL West all season.
Speaker 5 (07:19):
Well, if we're being fair, just what the standings tell
us is that right now the Chicago White Sox have
won four games and the Rockies have won three, and
we are so accustomed to saying that the White Sox
are inevitably the worst team out there. To your point,
the Rockies might challenge them and put that in their
(07:41):
quotes for that title. And remember this. What I will
say is that because the schedule has been changed, you're
not quite in your division as much as you used
to be, and yet you are still playing in your
league plenty. And I will say this with all fairness
as a long time wife, long American League guy. The
(08:02):
National League right now has better teams, at least at
the top end. There's just the number of elite teams
in the NL, I think is the story of the
sport right now. You look at the East and the
way that the Phillies and the Mets are playing, and
the Central the Cubs are a lot better. You got
three elite teams out West, whereas in the AL you
(08:22):
could have a surprise winner in the Central, surprise winner
in the West. There's just a lot more wins to
be had, I believe on the American League side of
the bracket, whereas with the NL, it's just it is
a gauntlet. And the Rockies I do feel badly for
their fate in what is right now. I think unquestionably
(08:43):
top to bottom the best division in baseball.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Yeah, they're that far back, and it's mid April and
they're going to be playing the Giants very soon and
then the Padres in a few weeks. I looked it up.
There is a July fourth White Sox Rockies game. So
if everybody could just set the DVR in advance tickets, now.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
Get your tickets down? Down? Does that happen to be
that in Chicago or in Denver?
Speaker 4 (09:06):
It is a home game for the Rockies, all right?
Speaker 5 (09:09):
Well, the fourth of July in Colorado is a lovely
place in time to be. I would recommend it to
get your tickets now. You might be able to show
up early and see the Stanley Cup parade for the
champion Avalanche, depending how they play out.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Well, how about the Boston Red Sox because they do
have Alex Bregman, who I hear as a third baseman
and he went five for five and Boston did win.
Is it fair for Red Sox fans to have hope
in this team?
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Not?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
They obviously see a guy who's still at all star
level the team. Can they make a run towards the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Yes they can because the pitching I think is stable enough.
And yesterday Hawk struggled in that sixteen to one lost
to the Rays. But for all the drama about where
Devers was going to play, what is role is going
to be, Ragman has come in and done what you
expect Bregman to do endeavors. Since that first few games
(10:07):
where everybody was just wondering what was going on, he's
been a lot better since then. William Rayu is a
really good player, an All Star caliber player for me.
Christian Campbell could be the rookie of the year. So
there are some newer faces there, and they've got a
healthy Trevor Story playing shortstop, getting some really key hits
for them, and I think playing an excellent defensive shortstop,
(10:28):
he's already stolen for six bases. I always say when
you see high stolen based totals for players, it's always
a good sign of health. You're not running, you're not
throwing your body on the line and sliding the second
base unless you're feeling good. And when you're running that
that tells me that your your body is in a
good place. And when guys like Tatis for the Padres
(10:48):
and Story for the Red Sox who've had the injuries
at different times when they're stealing bases, I'm I'm excited,
and and the Red Sox. I'm telling you they're not
a perfect team, but I believe their club's only going
to get better as the year goes along, partially because
their farm system is that good that either they'll be
able to call guys up or trade them. I think
(11:10):
they're still the best team right now in the Al
East MLB network.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Inside of John Paul Morosi, our guest Jason Smith Steve
Desager here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, so now,
because I want you to make me feel better, but
I want you to tell me the truth. So Jan
Soto does an interview that's starting to gain a lot
of attention in which he talked about his struggles early
in the season and said, yeah, I'm being pitched too
differently because I don't have Aaron Judge hitting behind me anymore.
(11:35):
And now suddenly it's whoa whoa whoa Wait wait what what?
Speaker 5 (11:38):
What?
Speaker 1 (11:39):
And you know, I think a couple of things, John
Paul One, I think, Okay, if they're paying you seven
hundred and sixty million dollars, you should be able to
hit in front or behind of anybody. But secondly, is
he sounds so defensive and really just lost right now
because Alonzo behind him is leading the majors in RBI
and he's third in ops, Like, well, just what does
(12:00):
one Soda want us to think at this point going on?
Is so different about about his his career and what
is coming to the Mets versus hitting but in front
of Aaron Judge.
Speaker 5 (12:11):
Yeah, I think you're right that the quote didn't really
land probably the way that Juan wanted it to. And
I think that, unfortunately, that's just the media culture that
we all live in and and have it that that
the if you say something that that even and I'm
(12:31):
sure one wasn't deliberately trying to undercut Pete a Lonzo
because to your point, A Lonzo, is that a phenomenal
start to the season. He's playing a lot, but he's
hitting better than Juan Soto is right now. That's just
objectively the case. Is it would we accurately call Aaron
Judge the best hitter in Major League Baseball over the
last several years? Yes, that is also objectively true. So
(12:54):
the things that Soto has said are are accurate. They are,
But the question is was this the right time and
venue to say them and invite even more even more commentary,
knowing that, I mean, guys, he hasn't even played his
first games as a met at Yankee Stadium yet, which
will invite its own level of critique and criticism and
(13:17):
call from the stands, et cetera. So I think that
it's just emblematic of the way that it's probably going
to go at least at the outset of this of
this contract. By year four or five, Yankee fans, they'll
still remember what happened, but it won't be quite as
sharp it is. I think one probably would need to
(13:39):
take a bit of a step back and say, listen, However,
however inclined he is to defend his play, and he's
been okay so far. It's not like he's been hitting
one ten. He's been productive, he's been taking his walks.
He hasn't been playing like an MVP, but he's been fine.
And I think that my advice to him would be
just to keep playing, keep doing what he's doing, and
(14:00):
eventually the production is going to turn. This most recent discourse,
I don't think it's a major controversy, but it'll be there.
For a while, because it's New York, and it's the
back page, and and that kind of thing tends to
happen in New York. So it's a good lesson for one. Probably.
By the way, Alonso also a Scott Boris client who
(14:22):
has the chance to opt out and become a major
free agent again this winter time. So perhaps our good
friend the attorney from Newport Beach, California, may yeah, he
may call up his clients and can be in a
bit of a summit, and then they'll shake hands and
keep keep trying to win you. But just for Jason
Smith Smith, if I may.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
I know, we have less than a minute. Who is
Tyler Soderstrom? I know he's from northern California and gets
to play for the A's. How is he hitting three
hundred and leading the league in homers?
Speaker 5 (14:50):
Who is this great, great athlete? He was? He was
picked in the first round of the twenty twenty draft.
Really good job by Eric Kuboda, the law time as
scouting director. Even going back to the moneyball era, he
is Soderstrom. My friend John Hicky wrote a great story
about him when he was drafted five years ago. He
is the son of an almond farmer in California, and
(15:15):
his father actually also was for a while, very briefly,
a major league pitcher with the San Francisco Giants. So
he's got some good baseball blood lines, and he's got
the hard working almond farmer blood lines as well. And
I'm told the Soderstrom family actually built a field of
dreams in the midst of Tyler's father's farm. So there
(15:39):
you go. It's it's a true home spun type of story.
I was ready because I was actually I had that
same now I knew the general contours of who he
was Steve, But to be fair, I actually asked myself
the very question that you asked me an hour ago,
and you just happen to ask the right question of
the right guy at the right time, and I hadn't
hit Ah.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
He's on Twitter at John Moros.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
That's why it says called it. This is my favorite
open note test. This is my favorite open note test
of the week. I just never know where the conversation
is going. And you guys didn't know that. I was
gonna tell you no, the Pistons are gonna beat the Knicks,
and oh.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Well, if that.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
Happening to him, is gonna have himself a Reggie Miller
moment at the garden, my friends, I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Oh if that happens, John Paul, it'll be It's been
nice knowing you and uh we will uh well, we'll
find another show for you to be on.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Call me that night when it happens. I'll a lot
with a flirt.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
He's on Twitter at John Morosi. That's at John Morosi.
All the latest on Jackie Robinson day as well, some
great stuff from John Paul as always, see you buddy.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 5 (16:49):
I find all the best guys. Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
All right, as always, that was enjoyable.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
But no, that's good. No he thinks no, he thinks
I'm kidding. No, no, no, no, no, he thinks I'm kidding.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
No.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
If the Pistons win this series, he's done.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Speaking of NBA, the update from the Bay Area is
that he's limped back onto the court John Morant and
the Grizzlies are down two in the fourth, but he
is playing.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Yeah, it's become the new thing. If you get injured,
you hit your free throws, then you leave the court
and then you come back like that's become a thing.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
Now.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Yeah, there's no wheelchair involved Paul Pierce, but he is
back on the court and I.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Think he's all right. He shd a step back jumper
to tie the game at ninety eight.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Attend, so limp back down the court.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Yeah, but limped a little bit. He limped a little bit.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
It looks like could challenge him every possession on de Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah, but it looks like it's a playable limp. So far,
so far again, two point game with eight and a
half left to go, A great one now between Golden
State and Memphis.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Will have more on.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
This coming up, but straight ahead another day, another big
story surrounding this guy who could go in the top
three of the NFL Draft or maybe not at all
in the first round. Wait, what that's next? Jason Smith,
Teve de Segre, and fro Mike Harmon. This is Fox
Sports Radio. You know, life in general can be chaotic,

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Fox Sports Radio Hi.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
The Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon, Steve Desager in
f Mike Carmen Tonight, six and a half to go
in the fourth quarter of the Warriors lead the Grizzlies
one oh seven to one oh three. Jamorant twenty points tonight,
coming back from an ankle injury. Came down on Buddy
Heel's foot after a turnaround jumper.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
You were about to say, hel where are you?
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Came down on the heel of but Buddy Heel's heel
came down on the foot of Buddy healed and uh
was helped off the court. Was going to the locker room, stopped,
was surrounded by medical personnel. It took a swing of water,
took a couple of pills, and back on the floor.
He's hit a couple of shots since then. It is
(20:09):
a one oh seven to one to oh three lead
again for the Warriors over the Grizzlies so far tonight,
though it has been owned by Jimmy Buckets. Butler has
thirty six points on the night to lead all scores.
Steph has twenty seven, four out eleven for three point range,
a four point lead for the Warriors. They were controlling
this game in a large way in the second quarter,
(20:29):
but a big third quarter by Memphis. They've eaten into
the lead a bit here and now we got a
fun one down the struck STEVEO.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
And you mentioned the big output so far from Jimmy Butler.
A couple items from AP in the Bay Area tonight.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
One.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
The last time Golden State in the postseason had somebody
that wasn't Steph Curry or Kevin Durant scored this much
in a play in or playoff was Klay Thompson almost
a decade ago. So to say, we said this even
before we were at this point of the game. They
are noticeably better since the acquisition of Jimmy Butler, and
in fairness, congrats to him that he's been himself. What
(21:04):
they thought they would get in in trade has been
an evidence on the court.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yeah, and you.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
See the difference between the East and the Western Conference
playing playing games right.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Oh my goodness, you see this game.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
And you go, man, I could see one of these
teams winning a couple of rounds and making a run
through and people still think the Warriors, Hey, they can
make a run through the Western Conference. They could win
this game and beat the Rockets and go on in
the East it's like, yeah, we got Orlando, and I
don't know, maybe the Bulls.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
I don't know. I don't know. These guys gonna win
to mom. Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
The Miami Heat are playing tomorrow at a record of
thirty seven and forty five.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
The way these games are being promoted is, Hey, TNT
True TV Max Warriors Grizzlies also on television the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
No, that one might just be True TV. We might
just farm that one out.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Hey, welcome to True TV, the official network of the
playing games in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Because not quite the regular season, it's.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
Always Atlanta, it's always Chicago. Get used to it, America.
The other item from Associated Press is that I need
to remind you that mid second quarter of this game
at Golden State tonight, the Warriors, despite the slow start
we mentioned earlier in the show, they were down eleven
to two quickly to the Grizzlies. Golden State mid second
quarter was ahead by twenty fifty five to thirty five,
(22:24):
and now it's going down to the wire. Golden State
up two with six minutes to go. What's Steve Kerrz
record as Golden State coach when in the postseason they're
up twenty at some point in the game, playoff or
play and the record is forty five and one. They've
only blown one huge lead like this in the postseason.
That was twenty nineteen.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Was that Game five against the It was against the Cavaliers.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
Now it was the huge Clippers come back in their
first round series many moons ago. But Golden State, they're
still at home, they still have Curry. Morant is not
one hundred. We get five and a half minutes to go.
It's now one o nine, one oh five Warriors.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
I'll have more on this as he will have more
in this and what's trending coming up in a few minutes.
But what did I say about seven to ten days ago? Hey,
it's clear every day there is going to be a
Shador Sanders story between now in the NFL draft. He
is the lightning rod. He is all the drama of
the NFL Draft. There's gonna be a story about him
every single day. And what's happened. There's been a story
(23:28):
about a different story about Shador Sanders every single day,
and it's all surrounding the same questions how good is
he and who's gonna draft him?
Speaker 5 (23:37):
Right?
Speaker 1 (23:37):
That's all you get. He's so great, he stinks, he's terrific.
I'd take him number one. He's not even in the
first three rounds of the draft for me. Right, who's
gonna wind up getting him? Today we find out he
visits the Giants, very big deal, Giants now spending a
lot of time with him. And uh, obviously the fallout
of the jersey retirement story from a day ago, where
(23:57):
we find that on Saturday, Colorado's to retire the jerseys
of Travis Hunter and Shadora Sanders. All right, let's see
what the Giants part of this first? Right, I said
this earlier in the show. Cleveland should take him number two.
I mean, I know they're moving off a quarterback, and
I understand that. And if you're not taking a quarterback,
you'll take Travis Hunter. But Cleveland should take him at
(24:18):
number two. The Giant should take him at number three,
because all quarterbacks are a risk. Right, You have just
as good a chance of getting a great quarterback at
number two or number three as you do getting somebody
at number eighteen or number thirty seven. The thing is,
you have your choice of quarterbacks when you pick this high.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
You don't know if in the future, you're gonna be
in a spot.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Where we can pick a quarterback that may wind up
being great. Right, and again, just because you don't feel
as great about Jhador Sanders as you did about guys
like Andrew Luck or whoever else. I mean, just because
you doesn't mean he's not going to be terrific. The
guy's got a lot of great qualities. He is tough,
he's got a great arm, he sees the game, he's smart. Yeah,
(25:02):
I get where sometimes his bravado turns people off. But
you know what, Baker Mayfield's kind of been full of
bravado from the majority of his career, and all of
a sudden he started to a Pro Bowl quarterback with
Tampa Bay, and he was a really good quarterback early
on with Cleveland as well.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Joe Burrow hasn't had any bravado in his career.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
No, No, Joe Burrow's been pretty much just fine.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Because quarterbacks are a risk is why I say you
have to take this chance. Because if let's say you're
Cleveland or the Giants, right, you clearly are in the
market for a quarterback, all right. If you're not completely
sold on Shador Sanders, then what's your plan, Well, we'll
get a quarterback next year.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Okay, how are you gonna do that? Well?
Speaker 1 (25:41):
In the draft, what if you don't draft high enough.
Now you're drafting high enough. Now, what if you don't
draft tight And what if you're drafting tenth or twelfth,
you're not getting the quarterback that you like. Quarterbacks you
like are going one through three in the draft. Oh,
we'll get somebody in free agency. Not a lot of
guys a free agency anymore. Sam Darnold was the only
guy this year you could have had him. Either team
could have had him, and you didn't. So you're saying,
(26:04):
we'll just take care of something in the future where
you don't know if you're gonna be in the right
position to do it or the right place to say, Hey, yeah,
this is where we go and we draft a guy.
You don't know if you're gonna be there, but you're
there now.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
You have this.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
You have these draft picks now, and yeah, I get
you're not sold on them, but when are you going
to get a better chance to potentially get a quarterback
of the future that could be a superstar that when
you're drafting two or three.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
That's why I don't care if I got questions about you. Yeah,
you got questions about everybody. Josh Allen was the fourth
quarterback drafted.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Oh, I guess the bus the Bills will say, oh, well,
we'll try to figure it out with Josh Allen. Oh,
by the way, you turn the best quarterback in the
NFL out of that draft, right, the best quarterback not
named Patrick Mahomes. So yeah, it's a bit of a risk.
You don't know how it's going to turn out. But
when you have the opportunity to draft a quarterback, you
gotta take one.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
Josh Allen I don't recall having a great final season
in college just for the rest oh.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
Yet a horrible fun I think he threw seventeen touchdowns
in fcs' final season.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
I remember he had a game against Justin Herbert and
they got their clocks cleaned. It was like a fifty
to ten type of game. And he was not a
big recruit out of high school either. And by the way,
he's an MVP now.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
And by the way, Justin Herbert didn't have a big
senior year either, I guess, and I think the Chargers
are okay with Justin Herbert.
Speaker 4 (27:19):
He was Rose Bowl MVP ladies and gentlemen in his
career at Oregon and a long career with the hometown team.
I think one of two things seems likely to happen.
For I'm picking the Giants as one of those teams
selecting high in the draft next week because there's not
only quarterback stur Sanders available, there is running back Ashton
(27:41):
Genty available. So knowing the Giants, either they will pick
a quarterback and then after a few years he seems
like he'll be a bust and they'll give him a
second contract, or they'll take Genty at running back and
he seems like he might have a good career and
then they'll let him go or trade him.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
And then he'll go win the Super with Division Ryals. Yeah, exactly,
that's how that's that's how it'll work.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
No, look, get ready, Washington.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
If you had to say to me which team is
more likely to draft stands between the Browns and and
the Giants, I would say the Giants simply because the
Browns seem like they've done more of their more full
throated uh of of letting them know that we are
not going to force a quarterback at number two. Okay, Well,
you went out you look, you made a trade for quarterback.
(28:27):
You went out and you got Joe Flacco back again.
Jimmy Hasselm said, we're not going to force a quarterback
at two. I get that, you're you're you're burned by
Deshaun Watson. But it seems like the Browns are going
out of their way to tell us, yeah, we're not
taking a quarterback at two. The Giants if you if
you can't get cam Ward and you can't get Travis Hunter,
you're really gonna go and say, Okay, we'll go take
out Dual Carter, We'll draft Ty Warren. I mean, you're
(28:49):
really gonna do that? Or or is that where Shador
Sanders comes off the board and maybe the Giants are
playing a little possum When it comes to Shador Sanders,
he had intimated in the past that hey, he's at
the All Star Game in Dallas, and he said, yeah,
looking forward to coming back here in a few months
and playing and playing here. Well, okay, you know Dallas
isn't drafting him, So Giants draft the top three. It
(29:10):
must be the Giants. So I wonder if the Giants
are playing a little possum with this and going, yeah,
We don't want to let it slip that we really
like the guy because we don't know what's gonna happen.
But now clearly the Browns look like they're going to
pass on a quarterback, So you know, maybe the possibility
of Sanders to the Giants is looking a little bit
better than it did a few weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
There is intrigue throughout the top ten of the first
round next week. I cannot wait for our Thursday night show.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
And honestly, look what because this is part of we
didn't get into it last night, but but we'll do
it for a couple of minutes.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Now.
Speaker 1 (29:41):
The whole jersey retirement thing, right with uh with Shador
Sanders and Travis Hunt, well, no, no, listen, Travis Hunt.
Travis Hunter is an all time college football Superstit the
guy warn the Heisman Trophy. Right, They've they've retired six jerseys.
Whizzar White is one of the Colorado jerseys got retired,
and Rashaan Salam who won the Heisman Trophy with Colorado
(30:03):
in the nineties. So yeah, I get you're retiring Travis
Hunter's jersey, right, Dion's always Deon Sanders is always gonna
be about some kind of show in glitz and glamour.
But he's retiring Chadur's jersey simply because it would be
embarrassing for Shador and for Dion if his son's jersey
isn't retired. First, right, it's embarrassing. Only reason why he's
(30:25):
like the youth coach that says I'll be able to
give preferential treatment to my kid over everybody else, right.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Because there's no reason.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
I mean, Shador Sanders he had a really good career, right,
he had a good career. But did he accomplish stuff, yes,
he said, Colorado passing records, but jersey retiring, Yeah, at
some point, maybe, let's say he has a great pro career,
they're gonna retire his number at Colorado.
Speaker 3 (30:45):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
Travis Hunter's already done everything you would want out of Colorado,
I understand. But the only reason Sanders is there too
is because it's a bad optic if somebody else's jersey
that's not Shador's is retired. And quite honestly, I'm sure
that the second part of the ancillary part of this
is that, well we'll get his the optics of Shador
a little bit better with the week before the draft
(31:08):
because obviously we've seen his stock falling a little bit.
If we're retiring his jersey on Saturday, that gets him
back in the positive limelight a little bit. And maybe
we can change the narrative a bit. And he speaks
and he'll say something and talk to teams. So this
is a couple of reasons there. You know, the ansellery
one is, hey, maybe we help his image a little bit.
But the main one is it's just embarrassing for Dion
(31:29):
if you're retiring somebody else's jersey and not his kids.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
And it's a convenient time spring came crowd all of
that outdoors.
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Yeah, anytime an look, and he wants to grow Colorado football.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
He wants to do something fun. I know, the whole
debate of this is always a too soon.
Speaker 1 (31:45):
Well, Dion wants to do something to keep juicing up
Colorado football.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
Right.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
He thought he was gonna be able to play Syracuse
in the spring in NCAA. He said, no, Okay, instead,
we're gonna retire jerseys before the NFL Draft.
Speaker 4 (31:55):
For retiring that's kind of college program wouldn't be juiced
by that.
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Yeah, it's kind of how it works.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
He is he is someone who is gonna seize the
opportunity and find a way to grab the limelight and
grab the conversation.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
That's what he does. But make no mistake, that's why
he's retiring Schador's jersey. Uh time now to.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Find out what's trending in the wide world of sports
where things might be getting a little bit away from
the Grizzlies as they try to come from behind against
the Golden State Warriors.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Steve O, what do you got for.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
Steph Curry with two minutes to go? A three pointer?
So one fourteen, one oh nine the lead, and now
with about a minute ago, it's one fourteen, one eleven
Golden State leading the NBA playing game in the Bay Area.
Thirty eight points for Jimmy Butler, Steph Curry with thirty points,
Desmond Bane the leading scorer for the Grizzlies with twenty eight.
(32:45):
Ja Morant has been trying to play on the ankle
he turned in the third quarter, twenty two points for him.
It's a three point Warriors lead and they have the
ball just over a minute to go. In the earlier
play in at Orlando, the Magic beat up Atlanta one
t to ninety five. It was a twenty two point
lead in the first half, nearly blew that but wound
(33:05):
up winning by more than twenty two. Cole Anthony twenty
six points in twenty minutes off the bench. Orlando goes
to Boston as the seventh seed. Whoever wins this Golden
State Game will go to Houston to start a first
round series on Sunday. In the NHL regular season ends
this Thursday, the LA Kings lead in the third six'
three At Seattle calgary in a shootout Over, Vegas minnesota
(33:27):
in overtime Beat, anaheim who wins For Tampa bay And
washington two late. Games in the major, leagues The padres
are undefeated at, home eleven to. Zero they are trailing
with two outs in the bottom of the tenth to
The cubs two to. One Nico horner with AN rbi
triple in the top of the tenth and all The
padre fans started chanting fired. Neak, no they, didn't but
(33:49):
that would have been a really good idea At Dodger.
Stadium they are going to the bottom of the EIGHTH
la five to two over the last Place, rockies who
could be falling to three and fourteen on the. Season
Boston's Alex bregman went five for five At Tampa bay
with two, homers four. RBIs Red sox won at seven to.
Four Walker buehler went five innings for the. Win The
(34:11):
Yankees Max freed now three to zero after The yanks
Beat Kansas city four to. Two freed with seven strikeouts
and six and two Thirds Aaron judge two. Hits he's
batting over three point. Eighty and then there's this guy
with The A's Tyler soderstrom two, homers six, RBIs athletics
win twelve three at The White.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Sox did you Say Eric solderholmers having a big? Ear
what it.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
Reminds me of. Twins this guy's hitting over three hundred
eight homers to lead the. Majors this guy had only
nine homers all last year in almost two hundred at.
Bats he has eight homers in his first sixty three
at bats this. Year updating the basketball there in time
out with a minute to, Go Golden state now up
(34:54):
one seventeen to one eleven Over.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Memphis thank, You Steve.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
Tho we'll have more on this game coming up next
as we break down who's moving on into THE nba
playoffs And we'll also tell you what team is under
the most pressure this week.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
In the playing.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
Rounds that's next right, Here Jason, Smith Steve desager in
For Mike. Carmon this Is Fox Sports, Radio Fox Sports,
Radio The Jason Smith show with my best Friend Mike Carmon.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
Special.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
Delivery steve De sager in For harmon tonight and uh,
okay we'll get to that team that's got a lot
of pressure on the team with the most pressure to
get out of the playing round this. Week, now that's
That cleveland's not in the playing. ROUND i know BECAUSE
i know because they're ranked first. Overall sorry about.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
THAT i. Know it's not The sharks or. Something, no it's.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Not but less than fifteen seconds left to, go and
The warrior you're gonna have to win this from the
free throw line as it is a one seventeen to
one sixteen lead for The. Warriors somehow The, grizzlies despite
the fact they Double Steph, curry The warriors are able
(36:07):
to inbound the ball To, curry who gets fouled was
the free throw. Line he's ninety percent from the. Line
it's a one point lead with eleven seconds left to.
Go this After Zach edy was fouled after it looks
like he lost a, rebound and and really a couple
of very generous calls in the last couple of minutes
going The grizzlies, Way Draymond green fouls out on what
(36:28):
looked like to be it was a.
Speaker 3 (36:29):
Touch foul fact.
Speaker 4 (36:31):
Break, also, Yeah Zach edy.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
Is sent to the free throw line after it looks
like he just lost a, rebound and, boy he has
been getting rebounds ripped out of his arms all night to,
Night Zach. Edy but he hits the free, throw so
it's a one point. Lead But Steph curry is going
to be going to the free throw line with about
eleven seconds. Left one seventeen one sixteen is your?
Speaker 4 (36:48):
Score and CAN i add how Clutch Steph curry has
been in this. GAME i know a Certain Rob parker
who we love and we love The Odd couple show
that's on before, us but it's kind of like he
won't put it. Down How Steph curry's not the greatest.
Shooter he can't, be and he's not because the stat
he keeps quoting is, yeah but with under fifty, Seconds let,
(37:11):
okay wait a, Minute so the shot with fifty five
seconds to, go like tonight that he made this three
pointer that's not a clutch. Shot under two minutes to,
go he hits a. Three next, possession a minute, ago
he hits another.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
Three he hits that three that he waits and the
defender jumps out him like three, times and he just, waits,
waits and then he hits the.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Three if he doesn't hit those, two they are trailing
at home right. Now instead it's up one ten seconds
left Against.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Memphis it's weird because The warriors that you feel like
the wars are playing really, well yet they're doing the
best they can to give the game to The, grizzlies
right with the turnovers and the, fouls and we're doing
the best.
Speaker 3 (37:50):
Weekend it makes sure.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
Because they haven't scored since those two threes THAT i
mentioned that they haven't scored in the final. Minute it's
only ten seconds, left SO i assume they're going to be.
Fouled it's a one Point warriors, lead but they got
the ball To, curry so It's curry going to the.
Line if they.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
Foul, uh, yeah they're gonna look at it because they
maybe it got knocked out of bounds before the.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
Foul bound, right no foul.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
And they go in for the, foul but, no they're
they're calling. It they're calling it a, foul and so
the because they're not in the bonus. Yet this is
now three fouls in a row that The grizzlies have
had to, commit and, uh they've been able to inbound
the ball To Steph curry every, time which is kind
of embarrassing that no matter what The grizzlies, do they're
able to get the ball To Steph curry every single.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Time So curry is.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
Uh they wish they Had Dylan brooks right.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Now, yeah oh, yeah, yeah, YEAH i wish you had
The curry. Stopper so five point four left in the,
game And Scottie Pippen junior has fouled. Out so still one,
seventeen one sixteen with five seconds, left and now Finally
Steph curry.
Speaker 6 (38:53):
Looking a free throw long thatlew second for three if
the clock because they weren't in the free throw situation,
left and then you put you, know one of the
great free throw shooters of the modern era at the.
Speaker 4 (39:03):
Stripe. Congratulations, Yeah so you, know are you still gonna
get a last? Possession it's, okay you might only be down.
Speaker 1 (39:09):
THREE i could do without the, big LONG iso shot
of him chewing on his. MOUTH i, mean come, on
stop with the chewing on the. Mouthpiece but, Again i'm
sure he will hit both of them and it's gonna
wind up needing The grizzlies needing a three to tie
this because they're simply not enough time for anything less
than the.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Three they. Can't they have time for a quick two
and a. Foul just don't have.
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Time so he should just put the mouthpiece in his
helmet like every other. Quarterback, yeah he just put it.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
Up just put it up on your, helmet, Right, LIKE i,
mean do we really need to talk while he's chewing?
IT i, Mean i'm done with. THAT i know it's
a big pet, peeve But i'm just done with. That
i'm just so.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
Done so it needs to be in and attached to
the teeth at all, times is what you're.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
Saying, yeah or take it.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
Out it does BECAUSE i know he knows when he's
chewing that he's on. CAMERA i know the chewing on
my mouth he's on. CAMERA i just can't stand.
Speaker 4 (39:54):
It and, yes he has made both three. Throws, Yes
Golden state is up, Three and, Yes memphi is just
taking its final.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Timeout So i'm gonna play Stan Van gundy here for a,
second And i'm gonna tell, you, HMMM i expect this
final shot to go To John. MORANT i, mean there's
there are a lot of good players on this, team
but this is a shot that's gonna go To John.
Speaker 4 (40:16):
Morant so you Leave Zach edie open because it's a
three point. DEFICIT i, MEAN.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
I i you, know look in, theory you could get
it to somebody else for. You, Look Jaron, jackson you,
know is having a good night shooting threes as. Well
bain is having a good night. Shooting but are you
gonna go down in this game having one of the
Not John morant taking a three, here SO i would
have s's gonna get. It and he's moving Around, okay
he's been moving around. It there's a timeout on the
floor right, now so you're not missing. Anything he's been
(40:46):
moving around, okay uh since the. Injury so maybe this
is a bit of adrenaline getting it. Out like obviously
you'll hear the stories. After, well let's see after it
sits for a. Day see where his ankle's at For.
Friday if he has to Play BUT i would assume
this is gonna Be john ran for three today.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
And this is not do or. Die keep in mind
the tournament format for this WEEK'S nba play. In there
is a last chance game On friday to get the eight.
Seed tonight's game is for the seventh.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
SEED i like how you call it the last chance.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
Game they should call it that the last.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
Chance hotel game right, here last chance for gas for
the next fifty. Miles so are we talking about overtime
And John moran Or Steph curry moving?
Speaker 3 (41:24):
On that's. Next keep it, Here, fox
