Speaker 1 (00:28):

An unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection,

is the way tire buying should be. Well, there's one
(00:50):
NFL team that needs to be let off the hook
needs to be sad. Everybody's been jumping up and down
on this team for the better part of this season.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
One just one.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Well there's one specif because it plays into the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Oh okay, yeah, I just thought you were gonna, you know,
drag another team along like no, no, no do the Jets
were gonna jet. So the ast about them. Failing doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
No, no, no, I but we'll get to that. But
just here because this falls under the category of obviously
he's got to do this. Anthony Davis spoke today, uh
and he is ready to make his Maverick's debut. And
he was asked today about the fans outrage at Luka
Doncic being traded, and ad said, quote, I understand it.
(01:35):
It's a business. I get who Luca was to this franchise,
to the city. It's my job to come in and
play basketball and do what I'm supposed to do and
give the fans hope and reassurance. Why Nico brought me here.
That's a good line. I mean, in other way, it
sounds like a politician. I would have him.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
He really got to ramp it up right, like you're
a WWE manager or superstar, charging down the aisle and
interrupting somebody's interview or their own little monologue there. But yeah,
I like the I like what he's trying to do.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
No, no, I see what he's he's saying what he's
supposed to happen because he's getting paid. He says, my job,
your job is to play well. Like like he's saying
it like it's a bonus. Hey, my job is to
come in here and make people fra it. I gotta
play great, dude. That's why they traded for That's why
you're getting paid as much money as you are, because
(02:30):
you're a great player. It's like, hey, I'm I'm my job.
I gotta I gotta come in here and play great. Yeah,
that's kind of goes along with the territory. This is
not something hey, oh we we traded for a guy.
He's just a guy. He's not really good, but boy,
hey he decided I'm gonna come in and really step
it up because I like making the trade for me.
He went from eight points a game to twenty three
(02:51):
points a game. Look at what he's done. This is
this is they got a d because he's great and
he puts up big numbers and plays great. One of
the best MS protectors in the game, still a big
all NBA player. Yeah, that's kind why they traded for you.
It's not a bonus, it's what they expect from you. No,
but I think he needed to lean into it a
(03:11):
little bit more. It's like knowing that they.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Loved Luca, right, but like that's the thing he's I
think he's trying to get to is I'm gonna make
you love me like you loved him. Plights of great basketball,
and it's gonna be brilliant, you know, all a little holkomaniacs,
and we're gonna run. Derek Lively's gonna come back, brother,
(03:38):
and we're gonna take over the division. Like I don't know,
like you gotta sell it a little harder, but I
think that's more where he's headed here going. Look, we
can play some pretty good basketball, but like I need
to win your heart, souls and minds uh to get
you inspired by Mavericks basketball again. So all of you
(03:58):
chumps that took the two thousand dollars buyout are begging
to come back into the arena.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
And then you drop the microphone and watch. I was
waiting for all you pencil net geeks. All you pencil
net gieks are gonna be out. You're gonna be kissing
his ass because your pencil net geek's pencil neck geek.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
All you fetch slovenly, let me show your ladies why
you come to the arena. See me gonna steal a
little bit from Blessy, a little for Rick Rude, your
husband's I.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Want you to avert your eyes. Ladies, get your cameras
out to take a picture. I'm gonna show you, Mike,
take my shirt off now. And then of course they
would show women in the audience who were taking pictures and.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Literally pulling out the little uh the flashes on them all.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
That was the best. I love that.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Fest times, but I like, I mean ads In in
the most unenviable positions, right because for he was the
bad guy, because he forced his way to the Lakers,
they win a title, nobody cares, he gets no credit,
and then he's basically the bad guy going like he's
got to turn full heel. And that's why I wish
(05:13):
he would have embraced it a bit more. But he
goes to the Mavericks that he's got to replace the
beloved Luca, like, you know what, Hey, he's one of
the greatest players we've seen of the last quarter century.
Doesn't matter. He's in jag in all these scenarios.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
So we'll got more NBA coming up. At about fifteen minutes,
Lakers insider Mark Madena is gonna stop by tell us
what to expect from Luca when he plays on Monday,
Lebron potentially out tomorrow night. We get all the inside
info on what the last few days have been like
for the team that made the biggest and franchise altering
moves of the trade deadline. But I want to say
(05:51):
this because I feel strongly and when I talk about
the team involved, you know I'm telling you the truth
when I say I feel strongly about it. It is
time to let the Giants off the hook for the
you let Saquon Barkley go storyline. Okay, I mean it's
been fun. It's been a full look and look. I
like taking quick side swipes of the Giants, of course
(06:11):
I do, right, Hey, look at them. You always carry
yourself as we're the greatest organization in the world, but
now we realize we're just as bad as some of
the worst teams. Nah No, I get it. It's fun.
It's fun to watch the offseason. The offseason hard knocks.
I don't want to see Barkley goes somewhere like Philadelphia
and really be a star. And that's exactly what happened.
It was great, it was fun. But let's just stop
(06:31):
for a second. It's a fun narrative. It's a bad
optic for the Giants. It's absolutely terrible, and I get it,
But do you really think if Barkley's on the Giants
he has this kind of year? You really think if
Barkley was on the Giants, suddenly, hey, guess what, they're
not picking third overall, They're in the playoffs and Barkley's
still running for two thousand yards. Of course not. The
(06:54):
Giants are terrible. They were terrible all year. It would
look like a year for Barkley like it was the
last couple he would struggle to get to one thousand yards.
They'd give him the ball thirty times a game. The
Giants offensive line is not great, their offense is not great.
They had nothing at quarterback. What really did you expect
Barkley to do? He goes to a team that has
(07:17):
probably the most talented roster in the NFL. It's been
that way for the last three years. It's been a
big wrestling match between the Eagles and the Niners. Who's
got the most talented roster in the NFL, and the
Eagles clearly showing our roster is still more that talented
and the Niners is not. He goes to a team
with an incredible offensive line, an incredible offensive line. Yeah,
(07:39):
with a great quarterback and two great receivers and a
great tight end and a great defense. Yeah, I think
they Taking a good running back and put him in
that offense is going to be a little bit better
than having him run the football for the Giants, where hey,
he gained five yards, let's stop and hang a banner
like he would have struggled immensely. He would have earned
every single yard to get to a thousand for the Giants.
(08:02):
So let's just for a second get that He's It
wouldn't have been an amazing year for the Giants. Might
they have won a game or two more?
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Yeah? Sure?
Speaker 1 (08:10):
But could Barkley have gotten hurt because hey, Barkley hitting
the backfield again on that one. Yeah, I'm not buying that. Suddenly, Hey,
the Giants problems would have been solved that they had
just held on to Saquon Barkley. He went to the
right team. They're incredibly talented. It's a lightning in a
bottle season. He's incredibly motivated after leaving the Giants. This
year was gonna be his best year with the Eagles,
(08:31):
of course it was. Yeah, he's in the right place
with the right team. I gotta I mean, I gotta
let the Giants off look for this. I'll still laugh
at him, and I'll still do all the other stuff,
but I gotta let the Giants off look for this one.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
No, look the Shane and Mara and all that stuff. Look,
I've been preaching this all year long, right as everybody
really tried to bury the Giants. And look, there were
a lot of bad optics the offseason. Hard knocks doesn't
play well, Shane's sun clowning him doesen help things. All
of that to say, I mean Tracy rushed for what
(09:04):
eight hundred and fifty yards or thereabouts four and a
half yards of carry. He's not the same guy that
you're game planning, quite obviously, And Sa Kwan said the obvious. Yeah,
this is the best line I've played behind talking about
his twenty twenty four Eagles. Well, yeah, clearly you're gonn
kiss their asses. But it's also you know fact or
as Frostburg would yell, science, it's science. But all of that,
(09:27):
Like even look at last year twenty twenty three, DeAndre
Swift thousand yards four point six a carry gain, Well
he had he averaged four point three yards to carry
Boston Scott and limited duty four point three yards per carry.
Oh yeah that Jalen Hurts guy. Fifteen touchdowns, right, six
hundred yards rushing. All of that to say, you've got
(09:51):
the loaded squad, as you so Astutelee pointed out the Giants,
that's something we probably should ask Furman before we let
him go. You know what, he would he have been
worth one win, half a win, win and a half.
You're still a bottom feeding organization. What other talent did
you have? Molieu neighbors already talking about playing with Jayden
(10:13):
Daniels for crying out loud. That was the other noise
coming out today. Oh yeah, it'd be fun to play
with him. It's like, really, you just finished your rookie year.
They're gonna go find you another quarterback. They're gonna be
that you're a building block. But you're you know, looking
over in Washington in division and going, hey, the other
guy got out in division. Maybe maybe I could go
(10:34):
to I mean, this is this is not good for anybody.
So but thinking the other thing with Saquon that that
gets dismissed though Jason and a lot of it. You know,
we could talk about the Giants roster, talk about the
deficiencies on the O line. Obviously, you don't have a
quarterback that you were worried about dicing you up downfield
or rushing the football as Hurtz has done for the Eagles.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
The other thing is Barkley's.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Had a couple of very serious injuries, and as much
as you love him, when you start talking about committing
major dollars, and it's not a death of the running
back situation, as everybody keeps wanting to declare it. Right again,
the three guys that get cited the most, Jacob's Henry
and Saquon Barkley, they went to teams with really good
(11:19):
rosters that have done their share of winning. Okay, it
doesn't mean they're they're I think any less of them
as players, but they went into pretty advantageous situations to
really capitalize on their skills. The Giants were not that team,
the Raiders were not that team. The Titans quite clearly
(11:42):
no longer that team. So all of it to say
Barkley goes to the Eagles, you know, stop punching him.
He's already dead, leached alone.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Like I said, it's fun. It's a really fun optic, right,
it's really really fun. And I understand and it because hey,
I like to celebrate a team like that when when
things don't go their way. I'm I'm not, I'm not.
I'm not sure too big for that. Now I can
when you've lived in their shadow for fish. Yeah, you
know if if you watch your big brother slip and
(12:14):
fall and and and uh, you know, you laugh because
he slipped on a big buttle of milk, He's gonna
punch you, but you still laugh at it. That's good
to see you get taken down.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, it's a it's a it's a really fun optic.
It's a fun story. And to watch the giants be
the gang that couldn't shoot straight. And you know the
warnings about bar I don't want him to go someplace
else and be a star, but sometimes that's inevitable. When
when you trade somebody who's good, if they get into
a better situation, understand that that's gonna happen. Right, If
(12:44):
you could control where he was gonna go and say okay,
we're gonna let him go and then make sure he
signs with a really bad team, it's not how it works, right,
Same thing with Luca. Why are the Mavericks fans so
upset about this trade. One of the reasons maybe they
don't really understand that this is what it's gonna be,
is that they're gonna watch Luca go to the Lakers
and just absolutely light it up. Is playing alongside Lebron
(13:05):
and Williams and this team that bringing in Reeves. I
got all kinds of shooters like Luca is made to
play in Los Angeles. Now, if they traded him like
to Detroit, would he still be great? I don't know,
but he's still be this kind of guy. But going
to the Lakers. Get ready, because that's a big part
of you. When you trade a player or letting go
someplace else, you have to understand it's not over when
(13:26):
that guy walks out the door. If that guy goes
to a big team and they play, well, that's going
to hang over you for however long this guy is
good for. And if Barkley wins the Super Bowl, my goodness,
they're gonna bring this up in New York. They're gonna
writers are gonna write about this for the next fifteen years.
The two things they'll write about for the next fifteen years.
Why was a Cortes in the game to pitch against
(13:50):
Freddie Freeman in Game one of the World Series. They're
gonna write about that for one hundred years. Why wasn't
Tim Hill in the game, And they'll write about Barkley
and his twenty twenty four season of twenty twenty five
Super Bowl. But you have to understand that's part of
the game. But honestly, the reality, the impact with the Giants,
he wouldn't have had this year. They would have been
looking to let him go again at the end of
this year. Anyway, Well, that's.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Just it, right, bring him back on a franchise and
then watch him walk out the door because you're not
gonna pay him the requisite money. And a lot of
it being informed by what you did with Daniel Jones.
But yeah, you move forward, and you know, sometimes it
is you, right, the old it's not you, it's you know,
it's me really can be a thing and not just
(14:33):
the line you use. You really might be introspective and
just go, boy, we really build something bad here. The
infrastructure is rotten out and sometimes but sometimes you needed
to really like you really need to lose your ass
big in the breakup to recognize you got to change
your evil ways.
Speaker 1 (14:53):

Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon, who live from the tirack dot com
studios where we are getting set for a big weekend
in the NBA. Lebron James may not play tomorrow for
the Lakers, but Luka Doncics is playing Monday. It's the
(16:47):
Super Bowl on Monday night of the NBA. Joining us
now in the hotline to break it all down Lakers Insider.
You can follow him on Twitter at markg Underscore Medina.
That's at mark G Underscore Medina and Mark I know that.
You know, all season long, you've talked about being the underminer,
trying to undermine Jj Redick at every turn to get
(17:08):
the Lakers head coaching job. I think with what's gone
on the last ten days, it's going to be really
hard for you to do that.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Now, Wow, it'll be hard. But think about this, The
Lakers thought about the big picture, the long term play
with getting Luca Dacic to secure their next superstar for
whenever Lebron James retires. All this is saying up to
warm the seat for me to coach Luca when he's
in his absolute prime. So everything's still hit in on
(17:35):
all cylinders.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
So if you're looking back at the last few guys,
and we've had some time to digest what we've seen,
the Luca trade, the Williams trade. Now the Lakers are
been playing well. It's been the best record they've had
at this point in the season since twenty twenty year
they won it all. What are you thinking about now
about the team after digesting what you've seen and going forward.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Here are a few things I'm thinking about. One, they're
demand winners of the trade deadline. The Lakers are scheduled
to have a statue for pat Riley at some point,
put Rob the Lincoln Line after that, and then with
Luka Dacic. Uh. You know, Genie Buss told me two
years ago that they're going to retire Lebron James's jersey
(18:17):
whenever he's in the Hall of Fame because that's the
custom for Luca Dodcic jersey right next to Lebron's, you know,
decades from now that those are the things I'm thinking
here that Luca is that next Laker superstar and he's
going to deliver multiple championships. And as far as the
Dallas Mavericks go, man, I don't know if they'll even
have a single fan by that point.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Difficult position. I mean, Ad tried to do his best
show today, Martin.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
You know what's fascinating is in the short term, it's
very well possible that the Mavericks have a better season
because even though the Lakers got Mark Williams, he's a
great center. You know, he's a really efficient score in
different parts of the court. There's an unknown on whether
he can stay healthy, and they're not an elite defensive
team with the Mavericks. Obviously, Anthony Davis has been a
(19:07):
Defensive Player of the Year candidate. I think guys like
Daniel Gafford, Derek Wiley, the second PJ Washington are all
great players. I think you know, Ad and the chemistry
is Kyrie Irving is going to be good. But all
this sets themselves up is to get to the second
round and nothing more. But with the Lakers, while I
am very bullish on their long term prospects, it's very
(19:29):
high risk ky reward of the short term. They very
well could put a pull off a championship run here
because they got Luca, but it's very well possible because
of just trying to figure out the right chemistry, trying
to find the right combinations and trying to become a
better defensive team. That they're a team that just gets
the players for them in the first round and nothing more.
But again, long term play is where it's at for
(19:52):
the Lakers. And so you know, maybe pencil look down
now for this season because the Cleveland Cavaliers coming out
of the East, I mean maybe next season we'll see
that Lakers next final showdown.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Well look, well, I like how that's two side swipes
in one statement there because the Knicks right there, and
then you mentioned how bullish you are on the Lakers,
And that's the only time Mike's Harbon's Bulls are going
to be mentioned positively, even though it's not a reference
to team, but at least the word bullish is uttered
in a positive frame of mind.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Hey, they resigned Lonzo Jerk.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
I love how they traded zach Lavine for like a
bag of potato chips. That's a line that actually Draymond
Greene used this podcast. It was hilarious listening to his
episode most recently where he devoted almost like twenty minutes
out of an hour long podcast just bashing the Bulls
and talking about how terrible their ownership is.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Well, you thought that it was bad under Garpacks, it's
actually been worse since those guys were deposed. Let me
go back to Mark Williams real quick. Is he a
guy that you have to do load management? Went to
the number of the games you miss? Right, because I mean,
what was the joke with Anthony Davis all the time? Well,
is he going to be available? This guy's not much
better with his track record, except that he's a lot younger.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Yeah, you know that is a fluid thing. We don't
fully know the answer, but for what it's worth. When
I did catch up with him last month when he
was with the Hornets coming off his injuries, he assured
me that he's fully healthy. He was off the minutes restriction,
so that's obviously a comforting sign. The other comforting sign
is that when you're looking at his play in the post,
(21:26):
along the block out the rim, he's incredibly efficient, great
pick and role player, a great passer. He's not going
to become a three point specialist, but there is a
thinking that he could become that stretch five kind of player.
So he does fulfill the lakers obvious spaking hole when
they traded Anthony Davis and all of a sudden they
(21:47):
don't have a center. They also actually could have used
the center when they had eighty. That's probably why they
he vouched for it so he could play at the
four because of just all the unknowns with Jackson Hayes
and Christian Wood and Christian colocoy're okay guys, but not
always available, and they're just solid players nothing more than that,
So that moves the needle for them. But when you're
(22:08):
looking at the Lakers defensively, they still have a long
ways to go because they don't have a lockdown perimeter defender.
But you know, in fairness, with having Luca Dacis and
Lebron James, their identity is going to be on the
offensive end. It's not about, hey, don't trial defense take
plays off. But you know what, you have a lot
of offensive magic. You have two generational talents I think
(22:29):
will work together because of how skilled they are as
both scores and passers, that they're going to be pretty
tough to stop.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
All right, So right now, obviously it's all sunshine, lollipops
and rainbows for the Lakers and what they have going forward.
And I look at it, this gives me vibes kind
of when they got Pau Gasol and how you could
tell this was just they were going to take off
from here, and they did. I think they won nine
out of their first ten. They went to three finals
with Gasol. Like I kind of get those vibes here
of what's going on with the Luca and adding Williams.
(22:59):
If I said to you, Mark, what's the big worry?
If you said, okay, if all this is going forward,
the Lakers have everything going for me, get a generational
talent in Luca. If I said to you, what's the
big thing, what's the big worry for la What would
you tell me it is, Well.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
There's always a few things that's obvious. Obviously Lebron James
he's forty years old, so you never can discount father time.
But he's still playing at a high level. Defensively, can
they have good perimeter defense? They don't have the personnel
right now to tell me yes. And third, just trying
to develop chemistry on the fly. I don't think that
there's going to be any push pool with Lebron and Luca.
(23:37):
From a chemistry standpoint. There was only push pool with
Lebron with deferring playmaking duties to players like Russell Westbrook
and D'Angel Russell. Because he didn't he wound up not
trusting them because of Russell's erratic play DeAngelo's shooting inconsistency. Luca,
even though he's been prodded, hey, trush your teammates more.
He's a great scorer. So I think all that's fine.
(23:59):
It's just about having to microwave all this in the
last thirty games of the season. But the point that
you made about the Lakers game Palgasol in two thousand
and eight, three straight finals. I think it's a completely
different dynamic here because you had Kobe Bryant still I
wouldn't say in his prime, but before you know, injuries
were getting the best of them. Number one and number two,
(24:21):
they had a complete team. Howl Gasol was that missing
championship piece, but they still had a lot of great
veteran talent around them with Lamarro to Derek Fisher. You
look at this current Lakers roster, you have Lebron James,
who's obviously a generational talent, but their supporting casts are
good but not great players. So you obviously add Luke
in the mix. That puts them in another level. But
(24:43):
I want to put them in championship contending status this season.
I would think they're ceiling his second round and then
seeing what they can do in the offseason and then
build it off the chemistry next season that would, you know,
put themselves in a position to win the title.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Build around the rest of the league. Mark you mentioned
pat Riley before talking about the emotions he and Butler
and everything. One, did you think Jimmy Butler would win
the standoffs and get himself out of Miami get a
massive extension?
Speaker 4 (25:13):
And Two?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
How does it play out? And how long before he
and Draymond fight?
Speaker 4 (25:20):
A lot of good questions here. I was surprised that
things worked out with Jimmy Butler and the Warriors because
initially the signal I was going from Warriors was that
not interested. They don't want to have to give up
the farm to get him. It's not worth the turbulence
and the drama, especially because they'll won an extension. But
things changed here from both sides. Jimmy Butler was not
(25:42):
seen that there was a market, and the Warriors they
were seeing, Okay, we have Steph Curry still playing recently well,
we still have d Raymond Green defending well and somewhat
limiting the text. But there's still elevens in the West.
So they got to make a move, and the Warriors
did find a sweet spot. They did have to have
to give up a lot, most notably with Vanrew Wiggins
in a first round pick, but they didn't have to
(26:03):
give up any of their young players. They still have
two first round picks left. So I think the way
the Warriors see it is they have a secondary score
with Steph, who plays offense completely different. With gain to
the rim, made a range game he and Draymon. I
think the feeling is that they're going to be fine
because they are both cut from the same competitive cloth.
(26:25):
You know. I actually asked Raymond after the game last night,
what's that going to look like? And he noted, look
in today's NBA at this point of the season, we're
not practicing a lot, so say it for next season.
But he was saying that he was really looking forward
to it, and he was dropping a bunch of expletives
on how amazing it's going to be when they go
Toto in practice. But at this point they think it's
(26:46):
going to be for the betterman of the team and
no punches will be thrown.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Martin Medina breaking news, no punches will be well, So Mark,
let me ask you this. Then I get getting away
from the Lakers. If I said to you, the team
that did the next best job at the trade deadline
besides the Lakers, who would you give me?
Speaker 4 (27:12):
Yeah, I would say the Santario Spurs. You know they
got I'm with you. I'm just thinking about that picking
roll game with six or one bam, and that's gonna
be amazing to watch.
Speaker 3 (27:23):
Hello, yeah, no good, I just said, yeah, did you agree.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
With you were. Those were the cheers going on at
Spurs game where their goes Spurs goats. They're making highlight reels. Yeah,
tick and roll game is great there. They still have
Chris Paul Harrison Barnes is a great vet. This is
a team that's equipped to make a playoff push. I
don't put them in contending status yet. The bottom line is,
I see the Oklahoma City Thunder winning Hell of the West.
(27:47):
I think that they will actually win the NBA title
this season, but in the stacked Western Conference, I think
the Spurs could get to the West Finals. Uh, that's
their ceiling, most likely second round. But this is a
team that was kind of playing in that spot off.
Maybe they're good enough to make in the play and
not quite. They're not a lottery team, but give it
some time. Just thrust them even more and look, Fiera
(28:10):
Minyamo is gonna be with the Spurs for decades to come.
Daron Fox wants to have a home there. It's gonna
be a lethal one two punch.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
You can follow on Twitter at Mark g Underscore Medina.
That said, Mark g Underscore Medina, Marks always appreciate the time.
We'll talk to you next week is as your efforts
to undermine JJ Reddick continue to get more difficult, appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
But I'll try to get a look at doctors this corner.
You know, came out here.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
See you buddy, have fun. There goes Mark Medina.
Speaker 3 (28:42):
No, look you can hear Mark. Hey, Hey, that guy
keeps preaching Luca don't play d Yeah, yeah, yeah, he
didn't worry about it. Man, It's all about the offensive game.
Let's say, no one's good. No one's gonna care. As
long as you score forty points, no one's gonna care.
If we can't guard Anyboddy and we lose one forty
five to one thirty eight.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
No one's gonna care. No one's gonna care. Look, the
the thing is, and I love the Spurs. You know that.
I'm with Mark that I like the deer and fox trade.
It's gonna it's a whole new world for the San
Antonio Spurs. Gonna take them a little bit of time. Obviously. Yes,
the picking we talked about how they could, how they're
gonna play off each other, how well they're gonna do
that earlier this week. Look, you lose tonight on the
(29:19):
road to the Hornets, who are terrible. It's gonna be
a little bit of time, but they are going to
peak and it is really gonna be something of all
the of the teams that are gonna make the biggest
leap standing wise. I mean it, by this time next year,
we're gonna say the Spurs one of the top four
teams in the NBA. Right, Like you had Steph Castle
come off the bench ight now he's coming off the
(29:40):
bench thirty three tonight off the bench for San Antonio,
you know, losing to the Hornets, right like, this is
a this is an incredibly talented team now with with
exactly what they needed. Like again, you want to go
back to the whole Paalgasol thing. Hey, the Lakers needed
a big who could do something, who was that talented,
you know, down low, and they got Palgasol and the
Spurs a guard that could be really, really dynamic as
(30:02):
good as as Steph Castle. As I told you, he's
a guy I would have taken number one overall in
the draft. He's more of a combo guard, right, great
defender as well. He can do a little bit of everything.
But I mean Darren Fox, he's an assassin. Like, this
is a guy that just gets to the hoop and
he kills you on his way there. I mean within
a year, I'm telling you this time. Next year, it's
gonna be how many titles in a row for Wemby
(30:23):
Now he's gonna wait four in a row?
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Five?
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Like what's it gonna be for the San Antonio Spurs team?
Era of the Spurs is back.
Speaker 3 (30:28):
Dearn Fox, also realizing the need for the do not
hit send button yesterday, took his shots at the King's
organization and then promptly deleted them.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, all the.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
Dysfunction and problem tonight. I mean that the ending of
that game was just such a fun watch. The Hornets
and Spurs LaMelo ball with the dish to Bridges to
give them the lead, come back the other way and
Fox can't get the shot off in time. He hits it,
but it's waved off because the red light was up,
so chaos ensues. But yeah, gonna be a fun watch,
(31:03):
and clearly a guy alongside Wembin Yama that you want
to talk about the two man NBA jam game. We're
gonna have some fun talking about them for a while.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Exit out by a Fresca exit swallen down the Jason
Smith Show with my best friend Mike Carmon time out
to find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.
But God has been called the Victor Webbin Yama of
Fox Sports Radio because he's just taller than everybody else
that works here. It's Steve Disager.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
No, not quite. Did you see the one block wemby
head tonight? He literally did not leave his feet in
the lane? Just thank you. I like that. Yes, san
Antonio did lose the close game at Charlotte Castle at
thirty three off the bench, but Hornet's on a last
second three pointer one at one seventeen one sixteen, Miles
Bridges the hero twenty five points and what a finish
(31:50):
to the night. In the NBA at Phoenix, Grayson Allen
the tying three pointer at the buzzer of regulation in overtime.
The Suns beat Utah one thirty five, one twenty seven
as Devin Booker had forty seven points and eleven assists.
The Sons. Kevin Durant was out tonight with a sprained ankle,
returning for Oklahoma City after three months off due to
(32:11):
a fractured pelvis, which chet Holm gritty at four points,
four blocks. Ocasey one again won twenty one one oh
nine over Toronto. Jalen Williams twenty seven points. Atlanta trailed
by eighteen at the half and still came back and
beat Milwaukee, won fifteen one ten. Gianni Santenacumpo was out
again for the Bucks with a sore calf. Bobby Portis
in the lost twenty six points fifteen boards. Cad Cunningham
(32:33):
at Detroit was out with a sprained ankle, but Malik
Beasley had thirty six points in a win over Philadelphia,
won twenty five, one twelve. It wasn't that close. Brooklyn,
with a strong fourth quarter, beat Miami one O two
to eighty six, and Cleveland won again winning At Washington
won thirty four, won twenty four despite forty five points
from the Wizard's Jordan Poole, who from three point range
(32:55):
was four of seventeen. The Lakers Lebron James is doubtful
for Saturday afternoon due to a sore ankle. Anthony Davis
will debut with the Mavericks on Saturday. Minnesota's Anthony Edwards
is questionable for Saturday's game with a sore hip. Golden
States Jimmy Butler is cleared to play Saturday. By the way,
Stephan Castle, the Spurs rookie, is in the Slam Dunk
(33:16):
Contest officially for NBA All Stars Saturday Night in about
a week, along with defending champ Mac McClung from the
G League. Amongst those in the three point Contest Tyler, Hero,
Jalen Brunson, and two time defending champion Damian Lillard. In
college basketball Top twenty matchup on Fox TV went to
Saint John's winning at Yukon sixty eight sixty two SAT.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
No. You know, Yukon could have used to fund Castle tonight.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
Absolutely, but they had the best coach in the game,
that's right much.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
They didn't something less of a coach without Stefan Castle
on the roster. Didn't They beat everybody in the tournament
by double digits last year?
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (33:54):
Yeah, it seems like an ancient memory. Saint John's was
down twenty four to ten early and still won at Connecticut.
Indiana coach Mike Woodson will step down after this season.
NHL Colorado won five four at Edmonton. The late hockey
game has the LA Kings now tied with Dallas three
three twelve minutes left in regulation.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Back to you, is a d playing in that game?
Or is he? Is he not playing yet?
Speaker 2 (34:16):
No?
Speaker 5 (34:16):
That is an LA Dallas game. But okay, we're gonna
wait a couple of weeks until the Mavericks Lakers LA.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Because I guarantee if some people bought tickets in La,
go hey, oh we got a d and Luca let's
go oh man.
Speaker 5 (34:29):
If you've got ad against Luca on skates, I would
buy tickets for that.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
Ah begs a lot, buddy. The Jason Smith Show with
Mike Carmon Lockethetirack dot Com Studios. Yes, it is an
idol Friday night in February, but did someone just clinch
a big award earlier tonight? In sports?
Speaker 6 (34:51):
That's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon, Dance it Up Man, live from the
direct dot Com Studios, and we get back into the
super Bowl in a big way.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
Coming up in a few minutes. But maybe some big
time hardware. Was just one tonight on an idle Friday
night in February in college basketball.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Where I thought you were ahead of me on SmackDown.
Then there was a title change or something.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
I'm gonna tell you, I think the coach of the
year in college basketball. We watched when another big game tonight.
They've won ten in a row. There's lots of good
teams this year, but you talk about the job that
someone has done with a team not expected to do
a ton had a couple of big transfers come in,
and clearly Kadari Richmond coming from Seaton Hall has been
(35:49):
everything since he's been able to stay healthy in the lineup.
The guy is a true triple double threat even in
college basketball. But Rick Patino may have won Coach of
the Year. Tonight, big national game televised on Big Fox.
They beat Yukon sixty eight sixty two. I mean, this
is a team that is just running roughshot over all
of their competition here in the Big East, and it
(36:11):
is it has been some kind of turnaround for Patino,
who is extremely polarizing and find a way to be
polarizing in every single stop along the way. But my goodness,
what he's done with Saint John Saint John's defensively is incredible.
I mean, you want you the attention to detail and
maybe it's just Patino yelling at them that close to
(36:32):
the floor. But I mean, defensively, they are fantastic. And
Richmond has really been the missing piece here that all
of a sudden he shows up in you know, twelve
six and six tonight. He is a terrific point guard.
And Saint John's is rolling on all cylinders man. And look,
there's lots of great coaches out there. Look, John Shire
of course is doing a great job with Duke this year.
But you got Cooper flag Man. I mean, come on,
(36:53):
you're gonna win a ton of games. You have a
lot of coach Hey, they having big years. But these
are all big teams with big players. Who's the guy
that stands out? Saint John's. They're going to be in
the top ten in college basketball this week. I think
for the first time since I was saying Louis Carna second,
but since Mike Jarvis was coaching the team back in
the early two thousands, like this is this has been
a high water mark for a New York City program,
(37:15):
a tried and true program that I grew up rooting for.
It's been such a big deal in college basketball, and
you know, having them play well is good for the game,
and I don't know that Rick Patino's not the coach
of the year at this point.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Man Saint John's hadn't appeared in the AP polls since
the twenty eighteen twenty nineteen season. They were, you know,
one of the big ones of also receiving votes to
start things in the preseason. But they've already matched last
year's win total. They're at twenty already last year twenty
(37:48):
and thirteen, right now twenty and three. Efficiency.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
This was don't forget tonight. That's another one, not another
one to know.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Now, but an absolute slugfest, right. It was not an
aesthetically pleasing game, hard fought possessions, fighting for loose balls,
and in the end he gets the better of hurling
in a big spot super Bowl Week on Fox. And
for Rick Patino, you know that resurgence, that next next run,
(38:18):
the ebb and flow and waves of a coach and
trying to find a new way to do things and
what we always I think kind of surmised that he
would be able to be a good salesman to bring
this thing along and turn it as he has. So,
I mean, the recognition for coaching of the Coach of
(38:41):
the Year and those kind of middling expectations. Right, maybe
you climb your way into the rankings and you can
get back to another twenty win season that puts you
on the bubble instead. Right now you're looking at a
team that's still rising up the ranks, and he's doing
some of his best work.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
Now the other part of it is this, Now think
about this, because we get to the you know, the
rock stars of college basketball the last couple of years
in Yukon. This is a Yukon team now that's sixteen
and seven, that is gonna fall out of the top
twenty five most likely after this week. Yukon's gotta have
a big fit. They had a bad start, a great middle,
(39:22):
and now you see they're struggling against big teams.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
They gotta have.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
A pretty big finish or we could be forget about
three peat. They might not even make the tournament depending
on how they finish. I know the look. The committee
will do everything they can to get Yukon in. Obviously,
get Danny Hurley in. They don't want him breaking into
offices yelling and cursing at everybody. Oh my greatest coach,
greatest coach in college basketball. But sixteen and seven. Yeah, sudden,
(39:47):
you get to sixteen and nine, well, whoa, whoa, whoah woh, Like,
what record is gonna get you in? They put more
mid majors in every year, and I know they're gonna
do everything they can to get Yukon in, But you
gotta start winning a few games here to make sure
you get in that tournament.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Yukon turned the ball over twenty two times in this game.
They gave it away twenty five times. Even though they
gotta win against Marquette the other night, we were fortunate
to win. We've been playing with fire and when you
have forty seven turnovers in two games, it just makes
you feel like you're a blankety blank coach. And that's
where he is right now, because right.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
Now Yukon is right around probably an eight seed, and
it's somebody said, no, you get to twelve seed, you're
out of the tournament, right So that I mean you
think about that like they're about an eight seed. They
got work to do. Man, think about a tournament without Yukon.
Maybe should have taken that Laker Chops and Luca Hey
coming up next more Super Bowl Fox
