You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in Side hour three Jason Smith
Mike Harmon live from the tire Rack dot Com studios.
And how about those new look Denver Nuggets. Dan isil
has coming and really done a great job with this team.
David Adelman, in his first game as new head coach
of the Denver Nuggets, says, hey, we can still do
(00:49):
something special. Well, so far tonight ninety seven, eighty four
lead over Sacramento ten minutes to go in the fourth
quarter for the Nuggets. Tonight, Michael Porter has eighteen. So
maybe that was the guy they wanted to get rid of.
Maybe maybe Michael Porter had a thing with Michael Malone.
I don't well, he was the guy that allegedly that
(01:09):
they wanted to trade. There were fights about yeah, what
is interesting in this and that, other than the cronkeys
who won, I mean Adamlman, Well we won yesterday because
we had a big story about Michael Alunge. But normally
the coach one of them stays, yeah, yeah, here's nobody.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
You're out, and then wait for it, wait for it.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Let the basketball community digest that one from minute. Oh,
Calvin Booth is out too. If they do well, it's
gonna be pretty soon teams are gonna say we can
fire a coach and not replace him. We could just
have an AI version or someone there to answer questions,
make him think there's a coach that we're all good.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
But did you see all the complaining Steve Kerr got up.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
On his soapbox at Bazoula and everybody else going uh
oh no, well here because all these guys are saying,
wait a minute, I want a title not too long ago.
I don't want to get fired like Malone did, so hey,
I want to make sure. Hey I understand. I don't
know what's going on here. I don't like it. Well,
now we're going into well, it's are owned by these
businesses and corporations. By the way, the best though, was
the Calvin Booth and all apologies to Calvin Booth, but
(02:06):
I found this funny.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Uh so maybe I'm going to hell?
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Is that people say he looks like it's Nick Cage's
face on Mike Brown's Nick Cage's face on Mike Brown.
Oh okay, I see what you're saying. Okay, if you
put him, y'all, yeah, if you mashed up together, I
could see that. Okay, all right, I could say. But
that's when Calvin Booth. Why they put Nick Cage's face
on Calvin? How come you get fired by the Nuggets?
(02:30):
You know, Everyboddy thinks I'm crazy, don't not. I don't
know why anythink it is? You thought I was crazy before?
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Do you see some of the moves I'll make now
I'm getting fired? How about in that Superman movie did
they make because I'd like to go in crowd fun Superman?
Nick Cage they put they had, they put the the
special about on it a couple of years ago, like
Kevin Smith, they did a special onto like Superman We're Born?
Speaker 3 (02:58):
And I know they put him in, you know, briefly
in the flash and all. But sure, yeah.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Sure, Uh Now, meanwhile, Jokic tonight for the Nuggets house,
Nicola yokis doing for his knee. Joy he is. They're
all playing with joy. A triple double for Jokic already
twelve points, eleven boards, and ten assists. Again, he's taken
just ten shots so far. The Nuggets with a ninety
seven eighty eight lead over the Kings. And look, and
this is why we talked about last night that it's
(03:22):
really overrated when you say, oh, we're firing coach this
close to the playoffs, if the guy has to go,
if a guy's gotta be fired because the team is
not going to reach its apex, the team is not
going to move on in the playoffs. If the situation
(03:43):
is untenable, you have to get rid of the coach.
You have no choice. Right, this is You're not gonna
waste a Yokic playoff when you know, when he's still,
you know, in the middle of his prime and saying, hey,
we're gonna just give this up because we know it's
a bad season, we'll put it away next year. No,
you want to save what you can. And this shows
you that sometimes just getting rid of a coach and
(04:07):
having teams play free and play with joy. Right, we
talked about that last night, and some of the Nuggets
were saying it before the game today, we're gonna play
with joy I'm like, ahead, listen to the show Congratulations,
not just JJ Reddick who listens. It's like, sometimes that's
worth its weight in in everything else. It's not always
about hey, we have the system, we have the coach,
we have X, Y and Z. Sometimes it's mentally you
(04:29):
need to be in the best position to succeed because
that's how you're gonna succeed. And if you're not in
the best position to succeed because for whatever reason, don't
get along with your coach, he's lost the room. You
don't try. Okay, it's time for a new coach. And
it's not like David Adelman's gonna come in here and say, hey, man,
I got this whole new way of doing things. Man,
we're gonna play with six guys on the court at once,
and people are not gonna realize that way way do
you see what we do. We're gonna take shots some
(04:50):
really far behind the three point land. We're gonna get
four points for these shot. No, he's gonna come in
and say, hey, guys, just go do your thing. We're
gonna bang out the dents of what I think needs
to be done, and maybe that's less responsibility for Russell Westbrook.
I'm gonna bang out the dents a little bit, but
other than that, go out and play. You guys have
played together. You won the title a couple of years ago. Hey,
(05:11):
everything is great. We understand that you guys are still winners.
Let's just rediscover that and you're gonna see the Nuggets
play a lot better. Believe me, I am more scared
of playing the Nuggets now in the first round of
the playoffs than I was if Michael Malone was still
the coach, knowing that things were that bad, knowing that
he had to go, he was taking on his team.
He was ripping them in the postgame press conference. Yeah,
(05:32):
give me the Nuggets because if things go bad, they're
gonna quit because they can't wait for the end of
the season. Now, I'm actually more scared about playing them because, well,
now they're happy, they're playing with fire. This is gonna
be off the the vapors of the of the excitement
and the adrenaline of not having to worry about being
beholden to a coach they don't like anymore. Don't respect anymore. Yeah,
(05:53):
I'm more wary about playing them now than I was before. Yeah.
I think there were some big takeaways from Josh Cronky. Know,
son of Stan, they've got their conglomerate, and make sure
you not say that son of stand. Make sure the
son of Stan. Yeah there you Son of Stan doesn't
even sound anywhere close Son of Stan. Okay, so he
listened to his dog. His dogs listen. So Josh Cronkey stating,
(06:18):
can you thinking about that Fred quind line for my
cousin Vinnie, So you defended him? No, I defended the
first guy they caught. So forty seven wins on the year,
and he was very adamant in parsing this out going look.
Wins can mask a lot, and some of that was. Hey,
if they went into the playoffs as currently constructed with
Michael Malone, you might win a series or two, and
(06:40):
then it becomes a lot easier to say, Okay, let's
go into the offseason. Can we figure it out? Can
we get everybody back to base to where we make
another run at it next year? Again, you're trying to
keep as much continuity and really keep the big guy
happy because he is the one guy in all of
the NBA that you worry about at some point grabbing
a bar and saying I'm going home, I'm gonna go
(07:02):
ride my horses, and I'm never gonna see you again. Right,
that could happen if he gets salty enough. I think
he is that guy. So that's in the back of
your head. How do we keep this train rolling with him?
So that also worked short term of how do we
maximize it? And you look at this steam they're a
forty seven win team. You're firing a coach. Clearly, there's
some discord. Clearly to me, you're not making this move
(07:26):
without consulting. YO gets in the other stars on this roster.
I mean, Jamal Murray hasn't played since March twenty six.
So that's a big, big telling sign of for the
playoffs how well they'll be able to go, because we
know he's a different guy in the playoffs than he
is regular season. But if you got to the point
where it's like, you know, we had this winning streak,
(07:47):
but guys weren't communicating, and we saw plenty of video.
We talked about it at the times, like, yeah, they
look like they're yelling at each other. I mean they're fifteen,
but they still all look pissed at the coach.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
And at each other.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
And then sure enough, that's the subruder film that is
being used to reinforce the Yeah, nobody's getting along and
have it for a long time. So Kronkey's point was,
if we happen to win a few more games, then
all of a sudden, it may be easier to stay
status quo. Right. The folks that don't yell at each other,
there's latent issues underneath, but they never hash it out,
like no, no, no, it's fine. We woke up, go to
(08:20):
work next day, keep going here. They said, No, let's
excize this and see if you can't push us in
a whole other direction. Geards greatness and keep this line moving,
and maybe Adaman becomes that guy. His dad certainly had
great success. Look, you've already seen a couple of things
from tonight, right, Just just really quick. We'll get to
Luca in a minute. But but you've already seen a
couple of things from tonight, right. I watched Jokic on
(08:42):
a on a time out, grab the grease board in
the huddle and and and design something up which maybe
think I can. Don't worry, David, I can be that good.
So I'm gonna draw this up right. But you're also
seeing things like Pickett in twenty two minutes tonight twelve
points and three assists. And okay, so if if Pickett's
gonna get more minutes, does this mean Russell Westbrook is
(09:04):
gonna get less? Because that was a big thing. Hey,
did Michael Malone trust Russell Westbrook too much? Right? It
was a it was you know, that was a big
storyline the last four or five games as well. So
already you're seeing a couple of small things, and like
I said, hey, part of it is, hey, Yoki's grabbing
the greaseport saying I got this. Okay, that's great. Hey,
something a little subtle, like maybe a little bit more
minutes for one guy, a little bit less for Russell Westbrook.
(09:24):
This is how it's done. It's not suddenly we're gonna
overhaul the entire system. This is this is how it goes.
This is how it works. I'm telling you it doesn't
matter when you fire a guy. It makes no day.
If a guy's gotta go, a guy's guy. If a
change has to be made, a change has to be made.
It doesn't matter when it is, because the last thing
I want to do is say, well, we'll just wait
and do this after. I'm just gonna suffer until the
season ends, because, yeah, making a move now it doesn't
(09:46):
make a lot of sense. Now, how about we do
something that actually could help us for things. Right, Look,
when you look at when teams fire managers in Major
League Baseball, right, it's not they don't. They don't fire
a manager thinking, Okay, we know the guy we want
to come in that's gonna take this team and take
that And that's not what managing a baseball team is. No,
it's just whoever comes in is not you. So whatever
(10:09):
influence you have had over this team, that influence has
seen its day, whether it is the team tunes you out,
whether it is your philosophy's your decision making has not
gone well, you go against what we want for saber metrics,
whatever it is, your decision making and your influence over
this team is stopping them from becoming the team we
(10:30):
know they can be. So the next guy that comes in,
it doesn't matter. I mean, hey, it makes no debt.
You could bring in another as long as you're up
bringing in the same guy. Hey, he's the same guy.
Whoever you bring in next. The players are like, oh, okay,
hey number one, we get put on notice. They just
fired our manager, and to hey, I feel a lot better.
I feel a lot more energized, ready to go play,
(10:50):
And yeah, the new coach is gonna come in feel
his way in. It's not gonna come in and say, okay, guys,
we're gonna do wind sprints now, before and after at
the end of every practice. That's not how it's done.
And so when you think about it for Major League Baseball,
it can be the same thing in the NBA. It's
not like the NBA said, okay, so Michael Malone is
out and Danny Hurley's coming in. No, it's hey, Michael
Malone is out. We're gonna bring up David Adelman. We're
(11:12):
gonna kind of do the same things.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
We're like a couple of subtle changes.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Because maybe part of it is, hey, we want less
minutes for Russell Westbrook, and Michael Malon was like, no, no,
we really want less minutes. No we want less minutes. No, okay,
somebody else who comes in is going to give him
less minutes. So you know, it's really feasible. You can
do things like that, even if it is three or
four days before the end of the regular season. Just
showed the grease board back and forth once again between
Adalman and Nikola Jokic. They're up eleven points, about seven
(11:40):
and a half remaining in this fourth quarter. But yeah,
different energy and trying to create a spark. But certainly
the Russell Westbrook thing very hot button and some of
his interactions with media highly entertaining the last couple of days.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah, he urge you to seek those He.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Never wants to talk to anybody. I mean, he never
wants to talk to him. But notice anytime anybody started
by trying to compliment something in the game, like he melts,
Like he doesn't get any praise. Yeah, Like the only
time anybody wants to talk to him is when he's
made a bad mistake at the end of the game.
Unfortunately it's happened quite a bit due Hey, Russell, that
forty five second blitz you had in the early fourth
(12:19):
quarter was amazing, Thank you. Now the other fourteen minutes
you were on the court, though, did not go as well.
Just say it, they've won forty seven games. You couldn't
have found him after a win you were you were
plus five and that forty five second span you were
minus nineteen. The other four and a half fourteen. You
gotta let him enjoy that moment. You got it, Okay,
(12:41):
moments over? I mean, Russ, come on, man, look what
what's going on here? Man? You slap your hands back
together and bring him back into reality. Here we are,
exit out, bout of Frasca, exit swalling down The Jason
Smith Show with Mike Carmon live in the tirec dot
Com Studio. So dendro the twelve point lead, the new
look Denver Nuggets with a twelve point lead over Sacramento
(13:01):
one O two ninety and new head coach Nikola Jokic
pressing all the right buttons tonight, especially on the grease
board during timeouts. All right, So coming up next, wanted
to get to that because that was a big thing
happening right now. But Luka Doncic has spoken to the media.
What did he have to say following his first game
in Dallas since the trade deadline? And what's the big
(13:21):
takeaway from this game that's gonna blow you away? We'll
tell you coming up next, Jason and Mike This is
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon, please live from Thetirack dot Com Studios.
Forty five points for Luka Doncic tonight, his triumphant return
to Dallas. Was full of tears early on, then it
was full of buckets in the first and then it
(14:00):
was just three after three, after three, thought he was
going to get to sixty in the first quarter, then
thought he was gonna get to fifty. Lakers kind of
stayed in control of the game for most of the
second half. Luca finishes with forty five points on the
way to the Lakers one to twelve ninety seven win.
We're gonna hear from him in a second. But I
(14:21):
gotta be honest. I mean not that, not that I
am always condoning take your money and gambling, but when
you told me tonight, because I didn't know what it was, Yeah,
when you told me tonight, what do you think the
over under was for Luca's points tonight for the game,
and I said, oh, man, I don't know thirty seven
thirty eight? You said, ah, the over under was.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Thirty thirty and a half. Can I say, yep, You've.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Got to be kidding me. Who the hell put that
number up there? Luca is an emotional player that you
know he's gonna want to score thirty in the first quarter.
Who the hell you really think he's gonna be helping
when his normal average is just three. Going back to
Dallas is a only gonna be worth one more bucket,
one more three pointer? Are you Who the hell set
(15:04):
that line? I hope who ever set that line in
Vegas they lost all kinds of money because to me,
that was the easiest bet of the year in the NBA.
Luca in his return to Dallas is not gonna score thirty.
You really think that's not gonna happen. He had fifteen
in the first quarter. I've been lighting up, lighting up
a victory cigar at that point. Well, you got it
at halftime when they took the break. You were able
(15:26):
to go and get your cigar in and then come
back for the second half. Because he had thirty one
to finish out that first half, which was magnificent, and
he hit that early shot and it's like, oh, here
we go.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
But I think the way as.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
You're setting the line, you're also saying, well, you got
a motivated Dallas squad because they don't want him to
come in and make them all look like a bunch
of fools. Anthony Davis plays in this matchup. He wouldn't
play the first time they met. Post trade, you got
Gafford back down low. But here's the thing, didn't matter.
He was seven to ten from three point range and
they're not running extra guy Adam or anything. He's just
(16:01):
setting up shop and hitting big shots left and right,
and before you know it, all of a sudden he's
en route to a forty five point performance. But yeah,
the forty seven, Yeah, forty seven and a half was
the points, assists and rebounds combined total for tonight, and
obviously he crushes that. That'd mean the over, really that
(16:21):
the over is. I think that's the easiest bet of
the year in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Yeah, it was pretty easy. It's the easiest bet of
the year.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Kind of okay, oh my, because normally you're seeing guys
coming in at you know, between twenty four and maybe
twenty seven. So a lot of twenty six and a
half's is what you'll see for star players in matchups
like this, and for to get over thirty is a
little bit of a boost. But I certainly can side
(16:47):
your point that if you knew he wasn't going going
down with a single shot left in his shoulder, I
don't care. I don't care. If Luca had his arm
cut off at halftime, that's all right, but it was
my right arm. Doesn't matter, flash wound, doesn't matter. I'm
still putting him up one hand and lefty from behind
the Still, I'm like a super josh. Still the step
(17:08):
back and I'm gonna hook shot. I'm gonna shoot. I'm
gonna He would hit the shot like Woody Harrison did
in White Men Can't Jump, And I said, when you
got to hit the shot to put Rosie Perez on
Jeopardy and they made him shoot from the other free
throw line. He goes, can I can I use a
hook shot? Yeah? Sure, Okay, Well he hits the Just
(17:28):
a massive game for Luca Ducis tonight, coming off an
emotional game yesterday which still had its residence. I think
it was really great for both the NBA and for
the Lakers that this came on the back end of
the back to back games. So we got a big
hot take for you coming up. But right now, let's
listen to Luka Doncics. This is from a few moments ago,
(17:49):
talking about his emotional night back in Dallas in front
of the fans and the team he called home until
the trade deadline a few weeks ago. You told good
to be back, but I don't like playing basketball no more.
By wait, wait, wait a minute, wait a minute, lucas Russian.
Now I didn't know that. Yes, if he dies, you
got you know, you know, we kind of sounded like
it should sound like there. He kind of sounded like
(18:12):
David Harbor is red Guardian. Oh nice, Yeah, you kind
of said you gave me a little red Guardian. We
had an amazing team. We are the best team. We
are the best team. You've seen Sing it with me.
Bye Bye me Somemitican Bye, rob My Chevy to the Levy.
All right, now let's hear from Luca Donga chapter the game.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
Luca, how did you go from the emotions of the
video and the fans and the reception and everything to then,
you know, playing the way that you played.
Speaker 6 (18:45):
New question, Like I said post game interview, you know,
after David, like I was like, there's no way I'm
playing this game. You know, it was so many emotions
and you know I just went out there and just played.
Speaker 7 (18:59):
Least when you checked out or there's a time out.
I guess before you checked out you had forty five points.
Come to the bench. Some of the fans in the
arena or chanting Luca and your Laker teammates are jumping
up and down and chanting it to what was that
moment like for you?
Speaker 4 (19:15):
And how do you think this?
Speaker 7 (19:16):
Uh was an eventful day for the Lakers as a
team and you being a part of them.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
Big time because they all had my back and so
we talked about before the game and everybody had my
back from coaches to players, and you know, we're trying
to build something special here and that was pretty really
really nice to see.
Speaker 5 (19:37):
I know we talked about this last time a little bit.
You said you know it was gonna ben emotional night,
but you weren't fully sure what to expect. I guess
when you woke up as more even got serena more
so even pretty game, Like, what were you feeling as
you know, you walk through this arena for the first
time in a while, as you you know, you see
these faces like what were what were you feeling in
those specifically?
Speaker 6 (19:57):
Well, it was a little bit of both you happy
and angry. But you know, it's nice to see, uh,
some familiar faces here. You know, I spent a lot
of times with them. But like you said, you know,
there was a lot of emotions. When I woke up,
I was tired. I didn't sleep much. I'm excited about
this game, and I really appreciate you the fence, the
(20:20):
way that reacted it to me.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
You know, mean neither. I didn't sleep well last I
woke up a couple of times night I had to
go to the bathroom get back in. It's one of
those nights that's a tough night getting to sleep. I
think both you and Luca were still pissed about him
getting thrown out against the Thunder. Tough night and tough.
I really wish you would have side swiped the league
right there, because he knows it's been rescinded by this point,
right he knows that technical is going. It would have
(20:42):
been nice to see a little side swipe, you know,
I lost a lot of sleep frustration over last night's
game and obviously anticipation of this one. But he could
have taken a little jabbit old Adam Silver in the
and the machine. I would have said, look, I get you,
because you know, my dog sleeps with us at night,
like he gets in bed sometimes, like when he gets
a little mad if I'm moving to class, he'll like
just kind of throw his whole hip into my side
(21:04):
so he can just lay laid down, like he kind
of gives me a little bit. Does that happen to you, Luca?
That's what you meant right by by not being able
to get to sleep? Is that what you meant? That's bet?
Benny does that all the time? Is that Bet? That's
Benny's Benny. Benny's move is Beny he wants to go
out or because ben which is a good thing. Is
like Benny sleeps, you know, and it's and it's great
because you know he sleeps like all spread out, which
is a way that you find out that your dog
(21:27):
feels very protected and happy that I can you know,
it's not if your dog is really curled up. It's
like I want to see that makes me feel safe.
But he's like spread out like like me, so like that,
he'll spread and if I get too spread out for
one reason or whatever it is, he'll just get up
and he'll cut. He really, he'll just throw his hip
into my side and then go right down like blank
(21:47):
you dad, all right, you gotta give me some room
in the middle of his bed right here. Okay, Okay, Benny,
I'll do it. That's a pretty good move. Yeah, he
does that. It's a big chicken jockey move. Chicken jockey
is just slider. Just give you a little bit of
a hip right there. He'd be a pretty good low
post player, Benny. Even though he's a small dog, he's
a multipoo. Like give me that hit going. Oh, he's
got getting the basketball. He can check down there. Yeah,
(22:08):
I mean, what'll be interesting to see, not having to
do with Luca, but your chicken jockey thing. How fast
can they get toys to market? It's kind of like
baby baby groot. Well, pretty soon you're gonna have maybe
get one where the chicken jockey is on the lebron
kendall back. Oh, that'd be pretty good.
Speaker 5 (22:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
Meeting of the minds, mashups.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Let's go now, look the big takeaway from this game
is not about Luca and the Lakers. It's about the
Mavericks and the fans and this game being in Dallas. Right.
For the Lakers, yes, it's a game that they were
looking forward to kind of it was excited to play
this game, but as you heard Luca say, I wanted
to play, but I was nervous. It's a game that
you want to get through. You're excited to play it,
(22:51):
but there's a little bit of apprehension because you don't
know how things are gonna be. It's gonna be a
little weird. You want to get through it. So the
Lakers win the game to get through it. Now we're
onto the playoffs. For the Mavericks, they needed this game,
all right, I told you to beginning. When this trade
is made, Hey, they got an All NBA player, and
if the guys can stay healthy, they'll be able to
add somebody huge this offseason. Because you're not spending three
(23:11):
hundred and fifty million dollars on Luca, which is the
contract he was gonna want and end up for at
the end of this year. So with a healthy Kyrie
and ad Hey, you bring another star player in, you
have a pretty good supporting cast in Dallas. You will
be a top half of the Western Conference team. But
things didn't go great. Ad wasn't healthy when he got here.
Kyrie got hurt. Now this is the best part. This
(23:35):
is a silver lining for the Mavericks on this because
all you've been hearing for the last few months is
how awful this trade is the worst trade ever. I
still can't believe it's done. You know, fans are still
in shock we traded Luca. I still can't believe we
traded Luca. But their mourning, right, it's still a case
of your morning losing a superstar who left and how
do you deal with that? And when you have that
(23:57):
bit of closure like tonight was, because when this trade happens,
it was boy, what's it gonna be the first time
he comes back to playing. He's gonna come back and
play in Dallas many times over the next few years,
but nothing's gonna be as big as the first time.
So that's really the day where you can say, all right,
the healing can begin, right because again you are mourning
losing your star. From a sports perspective, how do we
(24:18):
get past it? Well, we're gonna be angry we're gonna
be upset, we're gonna be hopeful, we're gonna be full
of anxiety. But then that first game is gonna come
and there's gonna be a release of emotion, and it's
gonna be very cathartic. You heard them channing fire Nico
the entire game for Nico Harrison. They cheered Luka Doncich
when every time he made a basket. They cheered in
the beginning of the game because of the big video
(24:40):
highlights for him. Luca didn't want to get traded. The
fans and the team needed this. So now you can say,
all right, we stripped all the bad karma and everything away,
and now we start to build it back up. We
build back the trust between the fans and the team,
because in the end, the fans are gonna be more
behold in the name of the front of the jersey
than the name on the back. As much as you
(25:01):
love Luca, they're not gonna suddenly say I'm not a
Mavericks fan anymore. Now I want to win. You said
goodbye to your star, and now the healing can really begin. Right,
You have another couple of games regular season, obviously this
season end of the season didn't go as you thought
it was going to go, or hoped it would go,
but you needed this moment to really be able to
strip all of that, all the bad stuff away, And
now everybody starts from zero and you go into the
(25:24):
offseason to try to add what you can to the
team that's gonna make a big three with with Ad
and Kyrie Irving, who is still an elite player. So
all right, you know, time to do this now, and
the fans can be mad, but now we can look
forward to the future. You needed a night like tonight
to really put it all to bed. That's why tonight
was so invaluable for the Mavericks. Regardless of what the
(25:44):
score of the game was, they had to have tonight
to do exactly what they did to yell at their televisions,
to yell at the game, to go crazy and curse
and scream and yell back and forth. And now, all right,
starting tomorrow morning, the sun's gonna come up and they'll
get ready for what's next. The five stages of grief.
Right now, you're into acceptance. You wish him well in
his new world, except when you meet head to head
(26:07):
and any potential playoff games down the road. Unfortunately for
the Mavericks their attempt to well not be good down
the stretch that played with great pride but is eclipsed
only by the sun, so they weren't able to catch
them and fall out of the play in tournament. So
they don't go into the lottery, which was one of
the things. I think in the last couple of weeks
(26:28):
there might have been a little bit of the hope
becoming a dangerous thing there. All right, can we be
bad enough that we get here? No, Gafford came back,
Lively came back, Ad was insistent on coming back when
it looked like it was going to be operations shut down.
But yeah, the Mavericks, it's time to move on. I
thought some of the subplots to this were fantastic. I
just showed you a gatorade ad that was shot and
(26:51):
the way they hung the towel around his neck and whatever.
But also some reports that it's like, remember I think
it was Rocky Balboa where Paul is like, hey, hey, Rocco,
I can do the merch. I can do it.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Oh yeah, that's what the Mavericks are trying to do
with Luca.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Hey, we've got these things with sponsors like no, whereas
Rocky said, yeah, Paulie, make what you're gonna make, never
said the sponsor in the back of his robe. Yeah here,
here's a bunch of money that could have been made
tonight that Luca is people vetoed. So I thought it
was great that the pettyingess still existed, and for a
franchise from the larger scale. They're still trying to really
(27:30):
wrap their arms around how much money they're losing based
on him being gone. Right, you lose that international superstar
and what do we talk about with the NBA more
than anybody else, got to get that international market, international
growth fuels. US don't worry about those pesky TV numbers,
and they shouldn't. They've got a seventy six billion dollars deal.
But everything else's growth overseas, and part of that is
(27:51):
Luca's stardom that the Mavericks don't get the benefit from anymore.
So that's part of the finance that they need to
look at. So the business part of it, for the fans,
it's they're not gonna get over it this quickly. I
mean it's the second time you're seeing but it's the
beginning this is the beginning to start somewhere, and this
is the starting point to heal and get over it.
Yeah you get so, you got your free T shirt,
(28:13):
Go wear it with pride, sell it on eBay, whatever
you're gonna do. But recognize that, all right, here's your
new reality. You do have a pretty good core. We
tried to champion it from day one. Boy, I had
a lot of angry people. It's not my fault. Kyrie
Irving then got hurt like I didn't hurt him, like
I didn't glule Liam as far as you know, yeah,
it wasn't it was it a couple of extra minutes.
(28:35):
Like there's been a lot of doctors that cannot say, hey,
you know what, things like this just happened. So all
of that to say, you got to rebuild and start
the process over again. You've got a couple of good
component parts, a couple of nice young pieces that you
didn't have to trade away in that deal, because remember
that was that was one of the things to really
kind of champion. All right. It's more or less one
(28:56):
of one for one in terms of the star power.
You didn't have to give up a bunch of other
guys with with Luca or well for the Lakers, they
didn't have to give anybody going back the other way,
so it gives you a base from which to draw.
So we'll see what they're able to do. The off season.
But the long road begins with the first step again.
Today is a great day for the Mavericks, the franchise,
(29:18):
Oh Luca, great channeling, draft day, great day. Today was
a great day. Had a great day.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
Look at you, Frank Lanegella.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Now you mentioned Bert Young I did.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
It's time now to.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
Find out what's trending in the wide world of sports.
From someone who's been called the Uncle Pauli of Fox
Sports Radio, it's because she once got a robot for
her birthday. It's Montylos.
Speaker 4 (29:37):
I would love a robot.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
Happy birthday, Monsi.
Speaker 3 (29:39):
It was nice, butler robot. Happy birthday, mon Oh.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
I like that. Happy birthast and drinks. Happy birthday, Monsi,
thank you, and happy birthday, Monsi.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
I mean, if it kept doing that, I would punch it.
But it sounds fine.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Happy birthday, Monti.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
That sounds fine, all right, fellas.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
But she loves me.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
What can I say?
Speaker 8 (29:56):
Going into tonight's game, The last NBA game is wrapping
up down to the final forty seconds. Clippers are up
on the Rockets won thirty four to one seventeen. But
going into tonight's games games, the Warriors, the Nuggets, the Clippers,
and the Grizzlies all had the same record forty seven
and thirty two.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
Clippers are gonna win this one.
Speaker 8 (30:13):
As just mentioned, Nikola Jokic ended with a triple double
twenty points, twelve rebounds, eleven assists, and the Nuggets beat
the Kings won twenty four to one sixteen.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
Harrison Barnes, former Warrior, hit.
Speaker 8 (30:25):
The three point buzzer beater with three seconds to go
and the Spurs walked it off one fourteen to one eleven.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
Against the Warriors, Steph Curry.
Speaker 8 (30:35):
Reached three hundred threes in the season for the sixth
time in his career and did it with thirty points
and eight rebounds in the loss.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
So out of those four teams.
Speaker 8 (30:43):
With the tide record, the Warriors lost today's game, Nuggets
and Clippers both won. Grizzlies didn't play, So who knows
how the standings are gonna end in the Western Conference.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
It's just a real murky.
Speaker 8 (30:54):
Okay, See did eliminate the Suns from the playoffs. With
the one twenty five to one eleven win without shake Gilgos,
Alexander Jaylen Williams ended with thirty three points in the win,
the Bulls outscored the heat one nineteen to one eleven
behind Josh Giddy's triple double. This means likely Miami is
gonna finish the regular season.
Speaker 4 (31:10):
As a tenth seed in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 8 (31:12):
And of course, as you mentioned, Luka Doncic returns to
Dallas an emotional night but drops forty five points and
they beat the MAVs one twelve to ninety seven. With
this win, the Lakers locked in a top six seed
for the playoffs. They avoid the play in Anthony Davis
five of thirteen from the field, ended with the double double,
thirteen points and eleven rebounds. In baseball, the final game
(31:33):
was just a crushing game for the Brewers because they
scored seventeen runs against the Rockies in Colorado, who only
scored two. The Rays defeated the Angels five to four,
while the Blue Jays topped the Red Sox two to
one and eleven innings, Trey Turner hit the go ahead
homer and the Phillies held on four to three. Against
the Braves, Ran Dieto sat Ina hit a grand slam,
(31:55):
scored the game winning run on a walk, and the
Mariners walk it off with the walk to top of
the Astros.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
Seven to six. Dodgers avoid the sweep.
Speaker 8 (32:03):
They edged the National six to five, though it has
got to none of this to run shot and in
hockey eight minutes to goo Blues and Oilers tied at
three in the third period, so eight minutes left in
that one. And earlier today the Maple Leaves edged the
Lightning four to three in overtime.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
Lot going on, guys, you had a lot of mons here,
lot going on, and all the bets you had to
not You have to figure out are you up or
down over the course of the night.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
You know, I hope I'm up, but I'm not sure.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Well, you bet the over for that jazz.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
You know, you know it the over. That was an
easy bet. That was an easy bet.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
All over, Okay, all right? Coming up next, Jason Smith
Mike Harmon Live from the tire rack dot Com Studios.
UH today was kind of a really good news, really
bad news day for the NBA. Why we'll explain next,
Jason am I Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Fox Sports Radio. The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon Live from the tie rack dot Com Studios.
And uh, we'll get back into the Lakers and Luca
coming up at about ten minutes, especially Lebron James and
the new Kendall that's out. But uh, as we get
close to the end of the regular season, right, we're
all taking a look at where teams are gonna finish
(33:25):
in the top six in the East and the Western Conference.
Obviously there's a big log jam at three, four, five,
and six for teams in the you know, in the West,
waiting to see how that's gonna shake itself out. But
I gotta be honest with you, right, the first thing
we're gonna see and we're gonna be all crazy about
next week is the playing round. And wow, the playing
round in the East is terrible. It's gonna be awful.
(33:48):
You're talking about Orlando, get the Bulls, Atlanta, the Bulls,
and the Heat. All four teams may not be over
five hundred. That's okay, there's I mean, this is where
you're gonna go. Uh, it's the East tonight, I mean
the East playing games are going to be terry.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Yeah, but you could sell stars here.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
Terrible. It's Kobe White. You said stars, you said stars.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Tyler heroes averaging like twenty five a night.
Speaker 1 (34:13):
Yeah, okay, he fills it up. He had thirty tonight
and I lost you bulls. He actually wore the bucket
hat during the game tonight too. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
No, dude, no one's gonna chicken bucket.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
This is Flint and Steele. Uh, no one's gonna Orlando,
Atlanta's Chicago, Miami terrible. They made they these games might
not even make it on NBA TV. That's how bad
they are. Where did they slip beyond true TV? They
may just say, hey, look we'll give them to you
for free to stream. Yeah, but it doesn't But we
(34:42):
don't have a streaming site. It doesn't matter. Talk about
goodwill right there? Just take where where do I get it?
It's like you just that's the that's the catch. You
have to find it. We'll let you. We'll let you
stream Atlanta and Chicago. Oh gee, thanks so much.
Speaker 3 (34:55):
Well I mean, look, Trey Young's still there.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
None of those games or games you're gonna watching the
regular season now were watching? Man? Are you so mad?
Speaker 6 (35:04):
Now?
Speaker 1 (35:04):
I'm just I'm being truthful.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
It's more basketball.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
Now. Here's the good news. It's still playoff game in
name only, really, in name only, you need you need
a team to come out of here and wind up
beating the Cavaliers in the first round to be something, right,
Toby White forty at night, Hey Tobe White, dude, you're
gonna have to get past Miami and then either Atlanta
(35:29):
or Orlanta first. Okay, I get it. Look, three weeks ago,
I was like, the Bull's gonna be able to drop
out a lot because what's the big rumor today? Right,
Nicola Jokics doesn't want to be a member of the
Nuggets anymore. Yeah, odds on favorite bolls love Chicago. Yeah,
but he's already been photoshopping, So I think I think
(35:50):
that's what's gonna always that he's already been science. Yeah,
Luca and your kitchen, Lebron, Yeah, it's happening. Now. The
good news is that you take a look now at
what this Western Conference playing round is going to be
and it is going to be Dallas, which, okay, great,
(36:11):
all the interest in Dallas and Anthony super Bowl tonight, Sacramento, okay, fine, Minnesota,
who is still having a really good thirteen games over
five hundred. Tell you how loaded the West is. This
is a team with Anthony Edwards. He's Michael Jordan again.
Don't you know we're getting the Michael Jordan conversations again
because we're getting close to the playoffs. And then it's
either Golden State maybe Memphis. Right, so you either getting
(36:35):
John Moran or Steph Curry. Maybe if Denver loses the company,
you're gonna get Yo Kicchen the playing round like, we're
gonna get a star studded playing round in the Western
co This is gonna be I don't know that we'll
ever see a playing round like this with the star
caliber of these teams going at it.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
I mean it.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
I would rather almost have an off day instead of
showing the Eastern Conference games, We're gonna just show you
interviews and stuff done during the practices for the Western
I mean, really, dude, come on, man, look at this.
You have you have you have two teams in the
playing round that's going to be sixteen games over five hundred.
The four teams in the east of the playing round
are going to be a combined sixteen games under five hundred. Yeah,
(37:16):
and you think I'm joking, I'm not eight fourteen They're
nineteen games under five hundred. Now the final to the
all four teams are a total of nineteen games under
five hundred.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
So what that's the way words out this year?
Speaker 4 (37:31):
It's bad.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
We don't even need to see it, man, Wes we
dos a best that's all we know. We don't need
to say, Hey, Cinderellas a whi, I get your Come on,
there's no Cinderella's there, you know there is. There's like
the the Cinderella Disney Channel made for TV ripoff kids
version of Cinderella. Maybe that's what you get. Wow, you're into?
(37:53):
Like the spinoff of Victorious is where you Vitoria is
a fine show? Nobody you could not televise these games
and no one's gonna care. Come on, they're gonna do
a spin off of it all these years, like no
one's gonna care about these Grenas finally getting her show?
All right, you still know way too much? They coggle.
You're gonna go chicken jockey. No, no, no, you could
(38:16):
again these games could not You could just say, hey,
we're not even gonna play them. We're just gonna have
a computer simulate ten thousand games, and whoever wins the
most games wins and will know in eight seconds who
the winners of the playing round is. Here we go go, oh, sorry,
I know right now. Okay it's Orlando and Atlanta. Look
they're out. Okay, great. Didn't even need to have the games,
didn't need to have Wow, you know, you just want
(38:37):
to get a simulation. How about this? What if you
take away the Eastern Conference and just make the Western
Conference playing round like best two out of three series, Like,
let's lengthen that so we get more of the good
players and players that we want to see instead of
all these other guys in the East. Why don't we
just do that instead? Hey, all right, are you just
you know I'm nit the best of this bad conference.
(38:58):
You should celebrate the hell out of me. I'm looking
out for America and what they want to see on television.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
And never gonna walk again, not even on crutches.
Speaker 1 (39:07):
Don't want to see, don't want to see the victorious
line of the night again.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
You don't like it, that's right. Guess who's gonna watch
this guy?
Speaker 1 (39:16):
No one, no one. I'm in you're not even gonna watch.
Coming up next, we get back to the biggest NBA
story of the night, Fox
