let me welcome in my co host.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
He is Calvin Washington. Man.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
I wish it wasn't as Patrick said, it wasn't exactly
the Magic City Monday. I was necessarily looking forward to
today about it thirty minutes ago. Hello doctors, miles friend, please,
why is that? I just need twenty seconds so I
can Sometimes you gotta release in no more pictures of
well that's the problem. So long story short of getting

(02:50):
out the car, imagine this happy birthday to my stepfather Wade,
Happy birthday, signing him with the wife with mother, get
under the parking struction're here. Reception gets a little fuzzy. Thankfully,
God cut my phone off because as I'm walking around
I'll call him once I get in the daylight. And
I've been the corner and someone's entire package and I

(03:13):
don't mean Amazon Prime is all out and he's just
letting the year and go everywhere, and I mean there's
no hands.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
Just just and it was not the.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
I don't even know what to say.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
And I've been the corner and my I'm like, this
is not happening in real life, and he's just screaming out,
you know.

Speaker 5 (03:32):
They're like, hey, you can't what's going on with me?
And he's like I was on the rain and he's just.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
There's no way you mean outside of this building. Oh,
I mean at the elevator in the middle of foot traffic.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
From us.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
But but I mean, you know you've been let's say
you're not going in the elevation, you go to where
the elevators are, you know, you know where the pay
machine is right there. I've been to the corner. Hello, darkness,
was it the old guy who could? That's the thing
I was thinking it was, you know what I mean? Oh,
I know what you mean, but I never I don't
even want to do this anymore because you know, it's

(04:06):
not a judging like you kind of think. You know,
you see somebody, You're like, Okay, they look like they're
really going through it.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Yeah, Like he didn't look like that.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
That's what I'm saying, Like, that's what I would think,
Like maybe he's in a pickle and he gets hold
it and he's just gottas.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
And hold it you wild right now and he's going
to rob you Wiland right now you think pickles and
holding it?

Speaker 5 (04:26):
Wow? Yeah, we can move on.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
But that was just not the Magic City. I mean,
I've been the corner. I mean it was just full
on everything out and it was like, am I in
a dream right now? Is Rob Parker pranking me right now?

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Gig?

Speaker 1 (04:40):
So we hope that's not the sound.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
I'm just saying. Yeah, So continuing, I'm here though, ready
to work.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
All just do a little hop when you go to
your car today, Just just hop over that a little
areas jump over that.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Okay, Well, let's welcome in the odd couple crew, because
you wouldn't be able to do this fine radio program
without them.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
All is our engineer.

Speaker 6 (05:01):
Of course it all makes sense now is I was
just walking up they were mopping the floor and I
was like, what are you guys? Mopping, like oh, just cleaning.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Wow, it was a real moment that I didn't anticipate
on my Magic City Monday. I can imagine Patrick is
our producer. Hi guys sitting in for Rob g I know.
And uh, Steve de Seger's at Stankard desk. He'll keep
us updated throughout the program.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
Sports not that yes, And of course.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Elijah Eliza is our social media guru, and Elijah.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Will take care of all that on the social media, doesn't.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
All right, let's let's go here and we're just gonna
get into it and then we'll also we will preview
the National Championship game a little bit. I mean, obviously
it's Florida and Houston, and we saw some bad basketball
at the end, and and and I mean you can.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Look at it two ways, and I get it.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
If your huge team, you know, you know, you're saying, man,
look at what we did. We came back, We never
gave up, and uh you know we we we got
our way into the National Championship down by uh six
points with fifty five seconds to go, and Duke couldn't
get the ball in bounds. I mean, like just a
comedy of errors. And then if you look at if

(06:28):
your duke, You're like, we blew a golden opportunity. They
were right there. You talk about up by six with
the ball right and fifty five seconds, that's that's ballgame.
You notice, and you and they got the ball to
who you'd wanted to. It wasn't like some random guy
a tough shot right. And and here's the other thing,
there's no other way of looking at it other than

(06:49):
that Duke choke. It was a major choke job. You
want to talk about the over the back call, please?
You want to talk about before you bring that up,
how about the two field goals in the last thirteen minutes,
how about all the miss free throws?

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Like, that's what I'm looking at.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
You don't want to put yourself in a situation where
one call by a referee when you have a game
in hand, you're up by fourteen in the second half.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, put that game away.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
It was a major choke job.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
And I know a lot of people all over college
basketball America we're thrilled because they hate Duke. And here
was another reason I hate Duke. What'd you see? That's
why I saw a choke?

Speaker 5 (07:36):
Joam.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
I Actually it was a perfect timing, watching the game,
dip out to go catch it at the ball, walk
in and they're down like twelve. And I walk in
pretty much at where you're thinking, Oh, it's pretty much
a rap, you know. And when I tell you I
thought about this, and I have to give credit to
Houston because your mind goes, all, right, well, we could

(07:57):
be out of this thing. They've got the best player,
arguably in college basketball. They've got just the momentum of
being Duke behind them. You know, we're our offense had
been struggling for this whole game. They didn't look good.
They were forcing shots they didn't have. You can see
the polar opposite of.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
The two teams.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Duke's moving the ball, Duke's getting good shots, swinging it,
working within their offense. And obviously we have a big
time guy in Cooper Flag if you're Duke, Houston was
getting tight forcing it, one guy dribbling the whole shot clock,
shooting bad shots. But then they locked in and said,
you know what gets us here. Athleticism, high intensity defense.

(08:35):
You know, all the videos came out and showed them
what they do in practice. Every guy runs a five
minute mile and all that, and that's what they did,
and they forced the hand of Duke, and Duke got
they did get tight. But I think really more than anything,
they just start getting offensive rebounds. They being Houston, they
just start getting the putbacks and they're just tenacity overtook

(08:57):
the game. You start to look at nine old run
during the stretch of thirty three seconds.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
That's crazy.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Again, they closed the game twenty five and eight, and
it was at one point when you had a ninety
eight point seventeen percent chance of one.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
But they only made two field goals.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Is what I'm trying to say is like you can
look at it up the I'm just saying over the
back on.

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Fly that was a back off that Wasnay, was not
that was not the game.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
If you're looking at that calling at the game. Two
field goals you just brought it up was the final
twenty five days, So that tells you you only had
two field goals. They missed free throws. You know you
can't miss free throws, and then they turned it over
going to the baseline a couple of times. But the
reason why I'm not mad if someone says that they choked,
but for me, those turnovers were caused by great defense.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
They were shutting them all up in the basement, but
they weren't. But they weren't ready for what was to ensue.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
To me, that's coaching, like like, you can't tell me
that you're shocked that they're giving pressure on the inbound
like well, like right, like that that's to be expected.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
But you know what we saw to rob, we saw
the difference between a bunch of young guys and a
bunch of grizzled, veteran older guys. And that was something
we saw because throughout this tournament we've been seeing those
older teams. We've been joking about it. These are twenty
two to twenty three. You've heard me say, Man, I
know I went to high school with that kid. But
we saw a little difference there. Houston a little bit

(10:25):
older guys, a little more grizzled, a little more. You know,
We've been like as far as we can play in
these this tough environment, and people forget Kelvin Sampson has
won more tournament games in the last decade than anyone else.
So you know, again, this isn't like obviously we talked
about Cinderella never makes the dance. When it really comes
down to it, this was a team that'd been ready
for war, if you will, and Uh, Duke got a

(10:47):
couple of looks. David, I'm sure they wish they had
back a Cooper flag. Notwithstanding that one, you know, right
up in the pain kind of turn around that and
I'm sure he feels like if I get that at one, yeah,
a short one, it was sure, yep, you give me
that ten times to make seven.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
That's sometimes pressure, clinch up a little bit and then
all of a sudden your shot is just a little short.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
Uh that is a sign. I mean, that's what checks
were clinched. I'm not gonna lie. The cheeks were clinched.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
But I look at the overall last you know, if
you want to say five minutes of that game, I'm
in favor of saying, Houston went out there and snatched
that thing. Give me this game, give me your heart
versus just ultimately collapsing.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
But you're talking about the ninety eight percent chance of
winning that game. That that's where a choke is involved,
because you gotta be able to inbound the ball. Okay,
let them fail you, whatever it is, make your free throw.
You gotta do that. That's that's the part of ceiling
games or winning, and I get it. I'm not I
pick Houston in the Fox Sports Radio bracket. I'm number three,

(11:46):
boy three, number three, and I'm the only one with Houston.
If they win to day, I win the whole thing.
I think Doug and Plank right or ahead of me
Plank and then Doug. But I'm third, and I think
Plank and Doug picked Florida.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
Guess who just does not need you to win?

Speaker 2 (12:04):
You Doug got Oh that's okay because he's the college
basketball coach and I'm just never gonna hear it right,
I'm going to be coming college basketball since nineteen eighty six.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
He is gonna, let me tell you something, right now,
he is going to block you and everything because you're
gonna find a way to bring it up a million
times until next March.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Until we have will I will definitely bring it up.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, nof, but.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
But yeah, So for me, I'm not mad if somebody
says I choke, that's kind of the sitting there. It's like, boom,
they choked. I just thought Houston didn't give up. Houston
could have been like, man, the crowd's going crazy. It's Duke.
They're the blue devils. This is what they do. I
guess it's just not meant for us to go. We're
never gonna make it. We're never gonna win a title. Man,
just the curse. You know, you had to curse with

(12:47):
the Cougars, with the fly slamming Jama. Maybe Houston just cursed.
And I'd love the way they fought back. So I
give a lot of credit to Kelvin Sampson that team
and the way they push through, because they gonna have
flashbacks of Clyde and the teams sitting there. Well, let's
hear it from people.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Let's let people jump in here on the odd couple
on this Magic City Monday.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
Was it a choke job?

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Was it a collapse or was it all about Houston.
There's a problem Houston, because we had a problem. They
caused the problem a problem. And the Dukie the Dukies krik.
You're saying they sure did eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox eight seven seven nine nine, six sixty three
sixty nine. This was a colossal, big time choke job. Yeah,

(13:31):
that's all it was.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
They manned up.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
They choked h We'll do that big time. Eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox. It is The Odd Couple
on The Magic City Monday, Rob Parker kelvin Washington, right
here on Fox Sports Radio, Stick and Stay.

Speaker 5 (13:48):
If you've also ever had a in the US of A.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
Uh did Duke Chuck? Did Houston snatch the game? I
say they won it. They took Duke's heart. You say, Duke,
uh choke, we got your calls eight seven, seven ninety
nine on Fox.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
All right, let's go Greg and Florida. You're in the
odd couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
What's up? Greg Rabe?

Speaker 7 (16:02):
I agree with you, say choke. If you're up with
thirty six points with thirty seconds ago and you can't
coach your way to a victory, that's a choke.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
One d Per, I'm with you. You gotta seal that game.
There's something else you know like that is just one
of those moments. I appreciate the call, Greg, thank you,
appreciate it. Joseph and Houston. You're in the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
What's up, Joseph, Hey, good afternoon.

Speaker 8 (16:30):
How you go Fellers.

Speaker 9 (16:31):
Gret Houston won that game?

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah, alright.

Speaker 8 (16:36):
They played harder and if Duke didn't watch TAPO Houston,
that's how Houston played all season long. Kelvin says some
had him ready. They played forty complete minutes. You can't
play thirty five, You can't play thirty eight. You have
to play.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Forty Joseph, Joseph, I hear you, and I'm I'm hearing you.
But when they give you the scenario and tell you
it's ninety eight percent chance of you winning your game.
When it's set up and you don't win that game,
you've done something wrong not to win that game.

Speaker 5 (17:06):
And it doesn't mean that she disagree.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
They could have told you you ain't gonna make it
out Queen.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
It wasn't like you ain't gonna make it.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
You ain't gonna be a writer it, you ain't gonna
be on radio TV. You got a ninety eight percent
chance you ain't gonna make it.

Speaker 5 (17:18):
But what did you do?

Speaker 4 (17:19):
You pushed through, You persevere, And now I gotta hear
every day that started in nineteen eighty seven, Steve. I
gotta hear that every day, six eighth, well, depending on
the sport, this one eighty six. To get what I'm saying,
you gotta buff those probabilities.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
All right, we are winning this game.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
I'm taking your heart. When Mark Jackson was playing, how's
that dang that is? Think about that? He was he
was a kid, he was in college. Was he an't
coming to America? I know that sounds crazy because it
was a Saint John's game. The game they went to
is a real Saint John's game. I don't remember Casey
in Oregon. You're on the couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
What's up?

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Casey?

Speaker 10 (17:53):
Hey, Calvin, Hey, Rod?

Speaker 11 (17:54):
I got two things.

Speaker 8 (17:55):
For you guys.

Speaker 11 (17:55):
Yes, First of all, that was one of the worst
choke jobs that I've.

Speaker 12 (17:59):
Ever Thank you.

Speaker 11 (18:00):
You learn how to deal with the press when you
play middle school basketball. That is completely on John Shire.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Right back, Casey, you gotta know what's coming, like you, Ye.

Speaker 11 (18:10):
What's that being said? Well, what's that being said? At
the same time, note, that was one of the worst
over the coach I have ever seen.

Speaker 2 (18:19):
That was we agree on that, Yes, we agree with you,
but you can't go. But that was one of the
most You can't go, Casey, two for thirteen right, two
field goals in your final thirteen minutes. You got to
make free throws and they turn the ball of that over.

Speaker 11 (18:38):
Agreed, But I think those two things can both be set.

Speaker 4 (18:41):
Okay, I don't disagree with that whistle. Well, I do
disagree with your first point. I think Houston took it. However,
I get what you're saying.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Thanks, Casey, Appreciate you, Thank you.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Yeah. Tim, Chili, Tim in Atlanta, you're in the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
What's up, Chili, Chili, Hey, what's up?

Speaker 9 (18:57):
What's what's up?

Speaker 5 (18:59):
Chill Chilli about to talk to them, says Rob Chili.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Don't forget I'm coming down for that Dodgers Braves game
in May. Okay, don't forget.

Speaker 9 (19:05):
Oh yeah, yeah, I won't think. I won't forget Kevin.
You know, I'm a proud you ain't see. Alum said,
it's a great da oh.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I know you guys, y'all are rolling around the baby
that game.

Speaker 9 (19:18):
I mean exactly, but I'm like, you're calling from Houston,
Rober He actually made your point. He was saying about, uh,
you know, when when they knew what was coming, they
didn't get this guy to report.

Speaker 8 (19:30):
That's coaching.

Speaker 9 (19:31):
That's coaching. That's exactly. He actually made your point. He
just didn't realize it. That's coaching, and he's the problems.

Speaker 8 (19:39):
It was like with.

Speaker 9 (19:40):
Then they went twenty five to eight within the last
nine to ten minutes of the game. That's like a
train wreck you see coming. It's right, the whole momentum coming,
and you don't do anything to blunt it or stop it.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
It wasn't like you know, the lucky shot or somebody
chipped in the ball and you couldn't do anything right.

Speaker 9 (19:59):
You saw that coming twenty five to eight. In the
last nine to ten minutes of the game, you had
a chance to coach that up and do something short
that up. So that's this John Old.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
Let me ask you this, Chili is that? But is
that a choke job?

Speaker 4 (20:12):
Or you just got out coach by more seniors and
also they just play harder.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
But why is that? What I'm saying is why does
that to quate your choking?

Speaker 9 (20:19):
It is why it's the choke John, Kelvin, because you
have the better team, the better players. That's why it's
a choke job. You if I give you something to
give me you building a house and I give you
a full two docs, can I give Rob just the
hamlet some nails?

Speaker 5 (20:33):
Okay?

Speaker 4 (20:33):
See now you disrespect that? What Kelvin Sampson about to
call you right now? I ain't got to just gave
one too, So got one tool out.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
Tim. You acting like it was a nine seed.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Come on, Chili, No, no, no, but Duke was supposed
to win that.

Speaker 10 (20:45):
Game and that was exactly yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Appreciated, Tim, Thank you. How about Drew in New Jersey?
You're on the eye couple of Fox Sports Radio. It's
a Magic City Monday, buddy, how are you good?

Speaker 5 (20:59):
Great man?

Speaker 13 (21:01):
So, I think it's definitely an epic choke job. I
think this is literally as a coach, if you're a
coach and you're a basketball coach, this is just like
the worst of the worst. And it looked like everything
that happened was, Oh, it can't get any worse. And
then wait, he threw the ball to the other team.
Oh wait he hit another shot. So to me, one

(21:23):
the first the first step where they failed it was
when they noticed that they weren't going to intentionally fail
fellow the team. They should have drawn up a play,
given the ball to the best player on your team,
you know, and had that as a if this as
a contingency if they don't foul. What they did is
they took a terrible shot with like seven seconds left

(21:44):
to go on the terrible shot, So you didn't give
it to your best player. You gave it to the
spot up shooters. That's not really what he's good at. Right,
And then they hit a three. Why do you call
time out immediately after that three?

Speaker 9 (21:59):
Right?

Speaker 13 (21:59):
Instead of not calling the time out, your player throws
of all the other team.

Speaker 9 (22:06):
That made it worse.

Speaker 13 (22:07):
The over the back hall, I get it, but is
there challenging in college basketball?

Speaker 5 (22:11):
Yeah? I don't know.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
There was a couple of plays they had the last
few minutes where I was like waiting, you know, kell
judgment call.

Speaker 7 (22:17):
I don't.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
I don't think over the back. I mean, who's gonna
who's determined? More so the timing, like under a man
in under two minutes.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
But I still don't like who determed somebody in New
York and a booth is gonna say that that was
or wasn't.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
I'm just saying, like, that's a judgment call.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Would you agree it should be? When they review a
lot it went out of bounce, that's a judgment.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
Oh yeah, no, no, no.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
But you could see like where it bounced to hit
the line or something. Here is just a strict judgment.
I don't know you could do that. Hey, Drew, thanks
for the call. Uh yeah.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
So we'll get more a little bit just here as
a game gets started, we'll talk a little bit more
about you here. Yeah, and just a bit right now.
We got Dan Lookie getting ready to join us. Talk
to NBA.

Speaker 5 (22:57):
But it's Steve. The Sacred was trending.

Speaker 14 (23:00):
Supposed to be experimenting with a challenge system this year.
But I'm unaware.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
What do you know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (23:05):
Like on on a on a judgment call like that
over the back, someone's going to be in a booth
in New York or studios.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Oh yeah, that.

Speaker 5 (23:13):
Wasn't over the back. Oh.

Speaker 14 (23:14):
There's so much now in various sports that you can't
overturn even if you see it's weird.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
It's the same thing like the NFL talking about the holding. Dude,
We'll be here all day, Like, seriously, you can't, you can't,
you can't review holding.

Speaker 14 (23:28):
In other words, we'd be here like the NBA in
the last two minutes. Yeah, or some of these tournament games.
Gus uh sho heey o. Tani is Homer to tie
it up for the Dodgers in d C. It is
to to bottom of the third against the Nationals. The
champion Dodgers did visit the White House today. Eagles will
be there in three weeks as Super Bowl champs. By
the way, Dodgers pitcher Blake's Now will miss at least

(23:49):
a couple starts with shoulder inflammation, so the Dodgers will
have a minor league start tomorrow. Could have a bullpen
game on Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
Quickly you go from your cupboard of stuff. So you know,
I'm not saying it's just a minor thing, but but
that's how quickly baseball turned.

Speaker 14 (24:05):
Yes, and especially for this rotation, because you have Otani
not yet a pitcher this season, and the other two
Japanese pitchers are once a week guys as they used
to pitch in Japan. It's not strictly a five man
rotation or five day rotation with them. Pirates are out
to a four to nothing lead over the Cardinals. In
the fourth inning, Nolan Aronado, Cards third baseman out due

(24:27):
to illness. Blue Jays lead to nothing at Boston top
of the third. In case you didn't hear, large extension
coming to Vladimiricaurero junior.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Wow, really, is that in US money or Canadian is
all way?

Speaker 5 (24:38):
What?

Speaker 14 (24:40):
Of course? I there have been athletes in the past
in Canada that demand no US bus dollars even though
the team is taking in Canadian dollars.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
No, they won US dollars, And I think that that's fair,
especially if you're a US citizen and you live in
the United States, right, and I mean considering you know
what every other team is there, so let's get taxed too.

Speaker 5 (25:01):
Don't they get taxed by every state they play in?

Speaker 14 (25:03):
Absolutely, you do. That's the table time for everybody, right now,
do your taxes in the next week. If you hadn't
imagine the kind of work and the extra schedules that
a taxman for a pro athlete has because you have
to pay taxes.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
You're played.

Speaker 4 (25:19):
That happened to me once I hosted something. I had
no idea about these rules. I'm just the ordinary guy,
and I hosted it in Georgia and I got taxed
by California and Georgia.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
I said, excuse me, well.

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Because they can see and say you worked in that state,
I'd like.

Speaker 5 (25:30):
The show for a week and then you're yeah.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
It was the thing.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
I think they had talked about that with sports riders
at one point, because they know you're.

Speaker 5 (25:38):
At no point, you were at a hotel somewhere type
y'all just escaped.

Speaker 14 (25:42):
This does get talked about when free agents signed, like, oh,
he's signing with them, and there's no state tax in
that state, so they only have to pay federal.

Speaker 7 (25:50):
That is.

Speaker 5 (25:52):
Yeah, yeah, that's a big deal.

Speaker 14 (25:54):
We only have two NBA games. By the way, Detroit
out to a thirty one twenty eight lead on Sacramento
late first quarter. Piston shooting sixty one percent from the floor.
NBA Regular season end Sunday.

Speaker 5 (26:04):
Back to you, Yes, Steve, thank you brother.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
We appreciate you coming to you live from the tire
rack dot Com Studios. IT'SIAKA but Robin Kelvin on a
Magic City Monday.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
Nationals came right back after the whole.

Speaker 4 (26:15):
Time join out by Dan Waki Lakers insider. Of course
you can catch them with La Times Dan Wiki sports.

Speaker 2 (26:24):
On ex waky Waki Woyki.

Speaker 5 (26:26):
That's right. What's up, man, I got it. Just talk
to you a few hours ago.

Speaker 10 (26:29):
Hey, Rob, stop stop with this tax talking different states.

Speaker 5 (26:32):
I know, I know, I know, but did I remember?

Speaker 10 (26:36):
I was like, I know.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
They were like I was like, my god, and they're
gonna do this to us?

Speaker 5 (26:41):
Wow?

Speaker 2 (26:41):
You know because once they came, you remember the players
didn't used to get taxed. And then I think New
York and California started it. They're like, we got your schedule,
we know where you're working, right, and you know you
tonight right nowhere around it.

Speaker 11 (26:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (26:56):
I don't like that.

Speaker 10 (26:56):
The people who really get screwed on this, like in particular,
aren't like the I mean the players whatever, you're paying
a huge saxon, But like Sy, that's what the money's for, right,
you can pay an account to handle this for you.
It's like the equipment guys.

Speaker 12 (27:10):
Yep, same tax were the same taxes as those guys
who are filing you know, fifteen returns for the one
night they were in Memphis exactly.

Speaker 5 (27:21):
It's brutal.

Speaker 4 (27:22):
So they were I guess Brownie not getting texted, right
because only he only playing at home?

Speaker 10 (27:26):
Stop it, dad?

Speaker 5 (27:30):
Yeah, man, we got to let's go there. Yeah, let's
go down.

Speaker 1 (27:33):
Lakers. A couple of nice wins. What's happening with this team?

Speaker 2 (27:37):
And uh? As you get closer to the playoffs, there's
some nights you look and go, no, this is not
going to go the way we uh, some people expect it.
And then there are other nights where you think, well
maybe it is. Uh to me, it's it's not concrete
either way. Where are you on the Lakers.

Speaker 10 (27:53):
I'm more in the they're a real contender camp than
they're not. I think that I've seen them play us
good basketball since January, and I know the team has
changed and it's changed dramatically. But the heights that they've
been able to hit, you know, like on Sunday against
the Thunder the heights they were able to hit against
the Rockets last week against Denver in Denver, shortly after

(28:16):
Lukadacha trade. There's enough there for me to kind of
believe that they can beat anyone in the West, to
be honest, But you're right. I mean, look, there's still
some some kind of uncomfortable truths that you have to
tell about the Lakers when you talk about them. You've
got a very important player that's forty years old in
Lebron James. You know, they don't have a lot of

(28:37):
front court depth behind Jackson Hayes, and they can play
some small lineups. They're gonna play a lot of small lineups.
But they like having Hayes there as a lob threat
who can kind of do some stuff. We saw what
it did Tokyoma City is like far as opening up
the three point line last night, so like he matters.
And then I also kind of think, you know, like
they're just always sort of like an ankles point away

(29:00):
like a lot of teams.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
But especial, I agree with that, Dan. They just are Dan.

Speaker 4 (29:07):
Let me ask you two three years ago, I think
a lot of I speak for myself.

Speaker 5 (29:12):
I saw us. The reason I was like, man, I
kind of like him.

Speaker 4 (29:14):
He seems to be, you know, smart, very heady, and
I like the way he you know, he went after
a little bit now here, we are where you can
legitimately say, I mean, if the season started a little
bit later, he might have been an All Star, you know,
the way he's been playing. How key is he going
to be come postseason? Because we know Luca's Luca, and
Bron's Bron and him, like you said, maybe there's a
game he's off a little bit because he is forty.

(29:35):
But how key is Austin going to be during this run?

Speaker 10 (29:40):
I mean, he is one of their most important players,
and there's no question about it, right, Like it's funny
you mentioned that. It's you know, he's gone from being
this nice underdog story, you know, after his rookie season.
I went to his hometown in the middle of nowhere, Arkansas.
I believe that's the actual municipality. It's the middle of nowhere,
and you know, and it was a nice story and

(30:01):
no one really totally knew what was going to come
next for him, and every time he's been given a challenge,
since he's not only met it, he's exceeded it. And yeah,
I mean you mentioned all Star like that. Certainly scenes
in play. I don't know if you guys have seen
like those clips where they like kind of mash up
his play next to pistol pets and it's like, it's
kind of crazy.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
I can see that.

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Yeah, please stop with the pistol piece place pright. I
want to see it d because I look at it.

Speaker 10 (30:29):
You'll look at it and you'll see that sort of
flair for showmanship. Obviously, Pete Maravich Hall of Famer, all
time great player. But but what I'm talking about is
a guy who's able to create these weird angles and
these weird advantages and like sort of pull plays out
of his hat in a way that you might not expect.
And I think on this team in particular, where you
have Luca Dogs and you have Lebron James, you know

(30:50):
those two guys are going to be at one and
two on opposing Scotter reports, and that creates advantages for
Austin Reeves because he's good enough to score on your
best defender. He's really really good enough to score on
your third best.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
I'm gonna say on the Luca case, we know what
a great player is and all that, but there are
time where you see the bad Luca as well. And
that's the part where you look and go, you know,
another four shot that didn't need to be taken playing
in the rest to replace song? You know some of
the turnovers, Like there's stuff where you look at it

(31:29):
and go, oh, man, I just wish he wouldn't do
these kind of things. Sure, is that a concern at all?

Speaker 1 (31:36):
That you know that you could get some bad Luca too?

Speaker 2 (31:39):
And if you do, you need good Luca with great
littlebron to me in order to really make a real
rush or.

Speaker 10 (31:45):
Push I think Roblake, I mean, look right like, there
are the things that make Lucas special, and there's a
you know, we're talking about taxes. There's a tax that
you pay for those things, right Like one of those
taxes is that he's gonna complain to the rest.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
That just needs to stop it. It's just it's so
annoying to watch. He's so great, but he's.

Speaker 10 (32:05):
Not gonna stop and and so and look and there's
there's gonna be other stuff when it comes to like,
you know, they're gonna be the occasional matador defensive possessions,
and you know it's gonna happen, and you'd like to
minimize him, but it's gonna happen. So I think if you,
if you, if you approach it as like those are
just sort of the things that you're gonna deal with,

(32:27):
you can accept it and you can move on to
the other stuff. And you mentioned it, you know, like
there'll be an occasional for a shot and there'll be
some turnovers. But I think, you know, when I look
at this team and when I look at Luca, I
see a player who, in the short time I've been
around him, is like he is a high stimulus player.
Like you need to challenge him and really really challenge him.
And I think, like I'll point to I'll point to Sunday.

(32:49):
You put lou Dort right, defensive player of the ear
type of candidate on him, and just look at the
way that he ran him through screens, look at the
way he attacked. He only he had thirty seven I
say only he only had thirty points and seven assist
in that game. It felt like fifty and ten in
the building. It really did the past. He threw guys

(33:09):
that gave Vincent in the corner. I'm sure you know
the highlights all over there. I don't know how he moved
his hand from the back of the ball to the
front of the ball so quickly to foot that pass
over his head to the corner. It was a maestro performance.
I think like as they get in the playoffs and
as two teams throw everything at Luka Doncic, you know

(33:29):
he's gonna I think the player that I'm getting to
know and the person I'm getting to know is someone
who wants to throw everything back, who responds really well
the challenges. We saw that last year in the playoffs.
I just think he has more help right now. You know,
he's not the only one that has to solve those problems.
And that's not dist I don't mean that destruct me

(33:49):
to Kyrieving, but but I mean there's three guys, now
there's not two. There's three guys that can help solve
that problem. And I just think that he's in he's
in a really good situation. He has a real chance
to kind of really put his stamp on his legacy
this postseason. I think I think they have a real chance. Guys. Now,

(34:10):
I could say that about six teams in the Western Conference.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
All right, this last thing, will they get to the
Western Conference Finals? Yes? Or no? That's all I want
to hear, Yes or no.

Speaker 10 (34:20):
If I had the guests today, I'd say yes, went
on Sunday. Okay, we'll see where they are if they go.

Speaker 5 (34:25):
If they going, no, no, no, that's all.

Speaker 1 (34:26):
You don't have to explain it. I got a yes
or no answer.

Speaker 5 (34:28):
You know that.

Speaker 2 (34:29):
You know that's all you wanted. I just want to
so we can weave they don't. Yes, we can replay it. Yeah,
it works.

Speaker 10 (34:35):
I appreciate it. You know how I got to leave
myself from wiggle room here.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
I understand that. I understand, no doubt. Damn always a pleasure, appreciation,
appreciate it.

Speaker 10 (34:46):
All right, guys, been good. Hey my account. I'm in California,
no doubt, no doubt, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (34:53):
Absolutely we never questioned you were That's right, Dan, wealk

day Dicks against the spread.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
All right, Friday, I was one and two.

Speaker 1 (36:26):
Eighty seven and ninety two is my mark.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
For the year.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
We need a big night tonight. Did you pick the
game tonight? Is that one of your I did not?

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Okay, I did not.

Speaker 5 (36:36):
I picked.

Speaker 1 (36:37):
I know I should have.

Speaker 4 (36:40):
You know what for the first time, out of fourth,
call Elijah out of fourth, out a fourth, I'll just picked.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
I'm gonna pick Houston.

Speaker 5 (36:46):
Okay, went out right? Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:49):
I expect them to win the championship and then I'm
the the champion of the Fox Sports Radio. I can't
beyond yes. And you'll have to live.

Speaker 5 (36:57):
With me for at least a week.

Speaker 6 (36:59):
I don't know right now. A golig above you, so right,
But Doug to his point, picked Florida, and so did
Chris plaink. Yeah, so he All he has to have
is yo.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
So if those two guys who are ahead of me,
if they if Florida loses, I win, all right?

Speaker 5 (37:13):
Also, we ain't. That's all can already hear it?

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Pistons minus six and a half host of the Sacramento Kings.
I got the Dodgers minus one and a half through
at the Nationals, even though the national is a leading
right now. And I got the Mets minus one and
a half runs taking on the Marlins.

Speaker 5 (37:36):
At City Field.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
So let's go Mets minus one and a half, Dodgers
minus one and a half, and the Pistons minus six
and a half and take Houston Houston to win. And
remember Calvin that I'm not telling you who to bet on.
I'm telling you who I bet on.

Speaker 5 (37:52):
All right, four? And oh, get you right back in
this thing real quick.

Speaker 4 (37:58):
Any thoughts on just any Cooper flag as a whole?
Uh did you do? Because if the debate be comes,
obviously he's number one pick. So he's like, he's just
he's out of here. But there's no way he comes back, right,
He's not mad missed that shot. Maybe I could, we
could have won the national championship. I'll be the number
one pick again the next year. That ain't He could
have been the number one pick straight out of high
school if that, you know, if he were allowed.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
To Uh no, I just think once you're number one,
the number one pick, you should just go. I always
look at the Matt Lion right there. I'll tell you that.

Speaker 5 (38:28):
Yeah, you do. That's to the point I know He's like,
if you don't shut up about.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
This, I'm sorry, but you went from the first overall
pick to tenth and then for whatever reason you didn't
have the career.

Speaker 5 (38:37):
What it just flamed out though, and maybe he just
wasn't it period.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
You could have gone to a different organization, would have
been all that extra money. I'm just saying, like, you
don't pass up, you don't want to go from It
wasn't like, oh I'm gona play next year, I'm gonna
be number one anyway, all of a sudden you went
to number two.

Speaker 5 (38:53):
Cooper Flag.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
You don't know what if he gets hurt, what if
somebody else comes out of nowhere.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
I'm just saying it's not but in basketball hurt. No,
I agree with the hurt. But what I mean is
like Lebron would have went to college, you know, if
he had to, whatever he could have gotten hurt. Lebron
was gonna be the number one pick. Kyrie Hervan was
hurt the entire year except for like eight games. Kyrie
Evan was the number one pick. Like basketball is Zach,

(39:21):
I mean as Zach a Zion gotta you know, hurt, dude.

Speaker 5 (39:25):
He came back and playing. But they you know, saying
you don't win.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
You know that guy's basketball, because one guy can change
your franchise so much different you know football. It's like,
I think it's crazy, but you gotta give me a
saying for him to not come back. I'm just saying
there is a thought because he thought. You know, he
makes this shot, they go up what would have been
for I believe, and and all of a sudden, you know,
are up one or two. But uh, all of a sudden,

(39:50):
You've got this heroic moment. Now you're in the championship game.
You mess around, you know, but now you think about that. Man,
if I make this shot, if we win this game,
I could have went the championship game. You know, won
another one for Duke man baby. You know you wonder
kid just turned eighteen not too long ago. But you
gotta get out of here. I try to build a case.
If you're a huge, you gotta get out. That's what
I trying to build a case. And if you're Houston.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Going into this game after that comeback of fourteen points
second half against Duke.

Speaker 5 (40:16):
You can't do.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
But you can't tell them nothing that they that they
don't feel like they're gonna win, like they gotta go
in sky High.

Speaker 5 (40:23):
It doesn't. It's no knock on Florida and how good
Walter Clayton Jr.

Speaker 4 (40:27):
Point has been insane, back to back thirty plus games,
making huge shots. He's gonna be the key if he
drops another thirty piece tonight Florida. You know, they look
like they could have a chance to win their favor
by one and a half.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
But only one and a half. That tells you about this.

Speaker 4 (40:43):
Yeah, it's just a pickums at this point. But Walter
Clayton Junior has been That's that's the guy. And every
now and again we get a tournament, you get a
Kimba Walker like run, you get a Carmelo like run.
You know, you get that run with that guy was
just that good and he has been that good. I
pick Houston as well, but they gotta definitely watch him
because he has been ridiculously good.

Speaker 5 (41:03):
Well with some some big wins. We gotta go.

Speaker 4 (41:06):
The greatest feat in sports you Alex Ovechkin, of course,
beating Gretzky now for all time goals what's the greatest
feat in sports?

Speaker 5 (41:15):
We'll tell you. I think Tucker Woods has good feet.
Oh boy.
