Speaker 1 (00:00):
These Ben's Interview Lounge. Gotta tell you the first time
we met Kim Petress, I believe was either a jingle
ball or an iHeart music festival. I don't know. We
have so many FETs. Did you live the word fete?
Speaker 2 (00:15):
It's not used nearly enough.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
We should use the word fat. Kim Petriss walks into
the room and the room automatically is elevated, and she's incredible.
Of course, we're loving playing alone with Nicki Minaj and uh,
let's just talk to her. Please, Welcome to the show.
Kim Petress in the Mercedes Benz Interview Lounge. Oh fo god,
(00:39):
I feel like it's a shlub near Kim Petris.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
We had to dress up.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
I know today's dress is dressed down Thursday. Is this
is this your version of dressing down?
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Yes? After them?
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yes, let me tell you. Did you follow off those boots? Uh?
Speaker 5 (00:56):
No, I didn't follow I'm sad. That would have been cool,
would have been a bit moment.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
I think that one of the largest, the biggest moments
at that incredible fete was the cockroach out front.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Did you see Jason Derulo? Every year that meme pops
up and it looks like he's falling down the met
Galla steps and it's not even the met Gala and
it was years ago. He's like, every year people think
I'm there and I wasn't there.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
Yeah, in the mirror before, I was like, not Jason
Derulo tonight, not Jason Derula tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
So yes, I know it.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
But all you have to do chem is just fall
once and they'll play it back every year.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
I know, well maybe next year. You know, I still
got time, you do hopefully one day. Lots of stairs,
I can't even create an iconic, timeless moment like that.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Maybe today. I don't want you to put the headphones on,
but I want you to. Can you lift one to
your ear so you can hear something I'm about to
I don't know if they're on. There's the knob is
down in your crotch area. I don't want, you know, sumptuous,
Why did they put the headphone volume knob right crotch?
I tell you what, every which one when you have
like a really cute cute guest, did you know?
Speaker 4 (02:02):
I was like, okay, let me adjust that for yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Okay, are you ready, ladies and gentlemen? I now read
a passage from slut pop.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Whoa poetry.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
I can take it all, love it big or small,
make it hit the wall. I'm the throat goat. What's
my name? I'm the throat goat and it's got me
very far. Your man just bought me a car, A
(02:36):
standing ovation for Kim Petrick.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Thank you, guys, my finest work.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, I love that. Somewhere heaven, hovering above Germany, your
great great grandparents are looking down so proud.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
So proud, so proud.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Hey, welcome to the show. It's good to have you here.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Yeah, I'm so happy to be here. Thank you so
much for having me.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Well, thanks for being had. Was this your first met gala?
Speaker 4 (03:00):
My second one? The first time I was a horse.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
I had a horse like horset and I was a
horse girl that it was American fashion.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
And yeah, and I.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Met with this designer Hillary for Collina Strata. She was
like horse g's run America and put a horse on.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, a horse, a horse horse, It was a horse.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
It Does anybody ever come up with something that you
were like, No, I am not going to wear that.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
No, no downe for kind of everything.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
I like when things are crazy.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
I just I think fashion is made for being crazy,
or at least I feel pretty comfortable.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
In looking nuts, you know. So it's fun to me.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
It's art, it's it's expression of art.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
It is self expression.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Let me give you some. Let me give you some
Kimpetris tea. Oh, let's talk about the thrill seeker that
you have lurking within. Okay, okay, who won this team?
You have an entourage of eight thousand people and you're
Allee actually said they would go sky diving with you.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Three people said they would go sky diving.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
Uh, Tory, Iggy and Eli uh and.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Yeah and we we did do it.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
And I just I like to drag my friends out
two things that are scared to them and make them
do it.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
It's just nothing. Nothing brings me more joy.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Here's my question. Right before you, right before you jump
out of the plane, does Iggy run over and fix
the hair? I mean, you know it's going to get
all fed up on the way down.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yes, yes, I make him do that. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
And then they went kayaking and Iggy Iggy almost drowned. Yes,
well Claire watched from the shore stop.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
So I mean you're you're trying, you're trying to kill
your your posse.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Yeah, No, we re rented this airbnb and uh me
and Iggy went out to just you know, kayak and
there were holes in Iggy's boat and he started drowning.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Take out a holy boat.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
I didn't know maybe maybe maybe they were like fixed
up or fake fixed up. But he started drowning and
I I was the hero that day and I saved
his life and I dragged.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Him back to shore.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
There you go.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
I just needed to tell that story to feel good
about myself and the words.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Of Jennifer Cool these are trying to kill me anyway,
Posse killer another cut? You should have had a slapt pop.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yes, next next one?
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Hey, so alone? Okay, so alone? When it was it
was better better it was Alice DJ better off alone
the original? Right? Yes, that you so beautifully rearranged and
did your work too. So you remember dancing to that
in the clubs?
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Yes, many embarrassing moments do that song that I would
like to forget, but also fun moments with my friends.
I think that that song is just kind of like
the end of the night banger in Europe, So it's
always just like been around and I just love that
song so much.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
How fun to bring a memory it's actually a good
memory from your childhood. You're saying it was an embarrassing moment.
I'm sure it was a fun moment. How great is
it to be able to bring those songs well, bring
them up, so to speak, and rearrange them, have some
fun with them with Nicki Minaj. I mean, what a
day at the office.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Totally so cool.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
I mean, I was so happy that Alice DJ was
down because like how it started was we just kind
of pulled up the sample and started writing over it
in hopes maybe we could make something good enough so
we could clear the sample. And then yeah, Nicky jumped
on it, thank god, and made it incredible.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
And I love Nicki. I'm such a huge barb, And.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
Yeah, it's just so cool to kind of connect that
and make a new song out of kind of a
nostalgic feeling because that's just kind of what I wanted
in this song, so it would have been hard to
try to recreate it or find a way around it.
So Alice DJ was so cool and just like post
stories about the song, it's like happy about it.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
I was from a whole other a whole other time
with great stories, stories that you know, we can't do
some of those things anymore, killing the hand of the
law while I was in prison.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
I just want to mention how fabulous your nails are.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Oh, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Get a picture of those.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Yes, thank you.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Is it fun being kimpetrious?
Speaker 4 (07:23):
It's so fun?
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, Well, talk about what is so what is so
freaking fun about you? What is so great about Well?
Speaker 5 (07:31):
I think I just kind of carved out away in
my career, in my life where I can just be
ridiculous and beat myself and kind of talk about whatever
I want to.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
I love creating alter egos for my music. That's why I.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Have slup pop and I have a Halloween album, which
is basically just me killing people, you know, Like yeah,
like my posse. I take my friends to do really
dangerous stuff and they get in trouble and I get
to save them.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
But my life's really cool, you know.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
No, Yeah, but yeah, I just I feel like I
get to collaborate with cool people.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
People generally like.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
My stuff, and I think I just don't take myself
too seriously. And I love making music so much. It's
always been my number one passion that stuck with me
since I was a kid, and then I get to
do that and do that every day and do stuff
like this and be on shows and talk about music.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
It's what a life. Do you ever wake up though,
and go you know what? In the phone range, You're like, Hi, Iggy,
I just want to take myself seriously today. I don't
want to be I don't want to be crazy. I
don't want to be outlandish. I don't want to be
out of control. I don't want to be I don't
want to put any makeup on today. I would just
want to wear sweats and sit here and just fart.
(08:50):
I just want to like hide in my living room today.
Do you have those days?
Speaker 4 (08:54):
For sure? I definitely.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
I mean I wouldn't be like I just want to
fart today, but I mean, but I like that. Maybe yeah, no,
but but for sure. I mean. The thing is like
I don't get much sleep these days, which I like.
I like being busy, but there's definitely days where I
just like wake up and I'm.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Like, I can't do it today, help me.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
But I feel like my team always got my back
and just like fixes me up out of the roughest situations.
And uh and yeah, but that's definitely like some of
my favorite days are also just me on the couch
with my dogs doing nothing, eating uh ramen and watching movies.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
We need a Netflix documentary on you or something part series.
I think it'd be more than five parts. It'd be amazing.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
Oh thanks, I would love to do that, you know.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Speaking of we watched It Was You, released yesterday on
Disney Plus of the new Ed Shearon four part documentary
It is. It's worth a watch, sick You. You learn
more about Ed his wife, get to know her intimately
in his crazy years he's been having and things we
would not know otherwise. Is there ever a time in
(10:07):
your in your story that you would want to go Okay,
let me lay the cards on the table. Let me
just let you know about the goods, bad and ugly.
Here we go.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
I feel like I do. I don't think I have
many secrets in general. I think you can ask me
about pretty much anything and I'll tell you. But I mean,
I definitely I have a videographer with me at pretty
much all times. That's Miss Tory over there, and we
have we have a lot of footage of a lot
of moments and a lot of crazy moments and everything.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Tears any like emotional yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
For sure.
Speaker 5 (10:42):
I mean I remember doing my first Coachella and I
poured water over myself because it was so hot and
my mic cable drowned and like everything went wrong and
my whole set got delayed and I didn't get to
do the songs and I like slipped on the puddle
that I left and I was just like so devastated
after that that I just like cried after my first Coachella,
(11:04):
like hard, and like we capture that. Like there's definitely
it's intense, and like there's not a lot of sleep,
so that helps everything get more intense. And yeah, there's
there's moments that are like you know where since I
like want to do great all the time, where I
don't and then I'm sad about it, and.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Yeah, it's well we need to see that. I mean
as a fan, I mean it makes these crazy fun
moments mean more because it's nice to see the roller coaster.
What goes up must come down.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
I agree.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
Yeah, that's why we film everything. So maybe one day
when it's time, we'll just put it all together. But
right now, I feel like we got to get to
this next chapter, which is kind of like the next
album cycle, which is coming up, which alone is the
first single from it, right, so uh yeah, just got
to get through that and then maybe, I mean, we
have so much material to show.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
It's it's cool if.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
You're wondering who this is of you turning song, Kim
Petris is here, the album is with this summer. It's
it's almost album one time, is it not? Do we
have a date? Mario? They never say anything. We can't
tell you.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
I don't know why.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
I just tell me.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
I know, well, we have like kind of an epic
way to announce it.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I understand that. And we'll play it alone with with
with Kim and Nicki Minaja in a second.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
I have a question.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
You need to help us settle a debate in the
studio that has been raging for a long time in
in holy on Holy yeah, Oh daddy, daddy, if you
want to drop the addie m hmm, what is addie?
Is it adderall or is it an address?
Speaker 4 (12:34):
It's up to you, Gurly, No, the.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
Jury will disregard that the witness is screwing us over. Really,
just come on, well, flip a coin adderall or an address?
Speaker 5 (12:55):
I like that it that it can mean both. You know,
you can adjust it to your life. Okay, when we're
off the air, will you whisper it? Yes, okay, yes, absolutely.
I I don't love telling fans like exactly the meaning
of everything sometimes because like, you know what, if somebody
really wanted it to be this, and like I want
that to be like an open lane for you, Like, yes,
(13:16):
it can mean that.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
And we appreciate that very much so, but at the
same time, you just want to know the cold heart
true money.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
On the line.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
But Kim Kim, Kim, Kim, be on that. We look
up to you and we trust the direction you're putting
us in. If you say it's adderall around, okaydall, Kim
said it's adderall.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
Again. It can be both okay, and.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
She does the hair flip.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
She just flipped her hair and I got a hair
in my mouth and that's okay, and that's all right.
Well again, I remember the first time we met you.
It was one of those iHeart things. It was a
festival and a jingle Vegas, Yeah it was. And I
never met Kim Petrick's before and they said, Kim Petres
is here, you just come and say okay, And so
(14:03):
I'm like, yeah, who wouldn't want to meet meet Kim Petra's.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
To meet you too.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
You you just give you just gave me this most
wonderful you know what. You're a great person to meet
hug and I was like, wow, Kim Petre's just kind
of hugged me. Now it felt good. Let me tell
you those initial meetings, they that memory last forever. It's
that first impression thing. There really is something to that.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Yeah, I agree for sure.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
And you leave a great impression.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Thank you so much. That's that's great to hear you too. No, totally,
like I remember that and and that was that was
definitely a moment, and that was right before Unholy started
taking off, you know, and that.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
Was epic and at that iHeart thing.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
I think that was the first time we performed it
in the US, and so what happened ever since was crazy.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
So wow, kicked it off in Vegas. What a weird
place to kick anything.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
A list of people who don't make a good first impression.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Yeah, yeah, you don't hear that?
Speaker 4 (15:00):
Tell me the tea as well, whisper.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
And by the way, so we didn't get the addy answer,
but I don't. Let's not start with the body shop thingkid.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
She's not gonna give us an answer, I don't I
don't know if we should.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
We know what the body shop is, right.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
What do you think the body shop is? When you
wrote the song?
Speaker 4 (15:18):
What did you mean?
Speaker 5 (15:21):
Well, Sam definitely came up with that, so it's definitely
also a Sam question. But I mean, I definitely think
it's a strip club. I mean, I think we definitely
kind of were going there with the concept. And yeah,
I mean in the music video and stuff too. It's
kind of this, you know, it's just like a spot
(15:42):
that's a little freaky.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
So not a car mechanic.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
No, a body soap shop in the mall right by
the way, Okay, so address and adderall. They just added
attitude to the list of possibilities.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
For if you want to drop that attitude.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
I like that, Okay, I'm just added that. How is Sam?
Do you do? You talk to Sam every day or
every of the day, every week.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
Not every day, but it's it's not like a scheduled
thing like that. But we talk and Sam's on tour
and I'm excited because I think I'm gonna surprise pop
out at Sam's tour at some point.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
So watch that for that spoiler alert.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Well, you don't know what city it's in, So you know,
there's that.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Ask Sam about the banana.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
Okay, leave it at that, you know, but I love Sam.
I'm so grateful to Sam. And Sam's just like such
a lovely friend and person to have in your life,
such a like special soul.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
So I adore him.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Did he call you with the song and say, hey,
I have an idea or does he have to tell
you what the ideas or do you automatically just say yes, Sam,
I'll do it.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
We were talking for about three years or something like
that before we did the collaborate and sent back a
bunch of demos back and forth that just like never
really we never really finished. And then this song came
around and I got a dm uh and Uh. I
went into the studio like a week later, and we
just kind of had a couple of drinks and talked
(17:16):
about what we wanted to say, and things got really
slutty really fast, and Don Holy was born.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Yeah, you think about look, we we love Holy. Maybe
they make it very clear this show stands behind Holy.
What do you feel about some of the backlash that's
going on globally or here and there and everywhere. Everyone's
while you're gonna run into a pack of people who
just don't really understand you. Sam the song US anything, life, whatever,
(17:47):
what is your response within like how do you how
do you walk through that fog and go okay? Well
there they go, okay bye.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
Well I've I've had people protest my shows since I
d it my first tour, So I'm used to that,
you know, the way like four years ago something like that. Yeah,
and yeah, I mean just being Trands, being part of
the LGBTQ community, You're just you're just used to that,
to people saying and openly saying you're living wrong and
(18:19):
that you know you're going to hell. So that was
like since I was a kid, honestly kind of like
how people reacted towards me. So I just kind of
got used to it, and I was like, well, I
am the way I am, and I have to live
with that. And I think especially for kids that you know,
are struggling with like coming out or being themselves, it's
(18:41):
just like it's important to know that, you know, you
can do your thing and have fun doing that and
live a really happy life even though some people might
think you're going to hell. You know, it's just a
it's just a fact of being queer, and that's, you know,
something we deal with and at the end of the day,
it's okay, because if Sam and I can deal with it,
(19:03):
then so can you.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
Do. You wear that badge proudly, the badge of a
person who really is a great voice for anyone who
feels like they have been marginalized or crapped on or whatever,
because you are I mean, I read no, Kim Petris,
I'm telling you. You have this way because it comes
from your heart. It's not something that's formulated by a
(19:27):
scientist or a writer or somewhere. You have this way
of just saying what's on your mind and in your heart,
and it really makes people go Okay, yeah, Kim, thank you,
thank you for being on my side.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Oh, thank you. Yeah, totally.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Is there a lot of pressure to have that, No.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
I'm I'm super happy to do that, and I think
just in general, I just want to brighten people's day
with my music, and especially kids that are like me
or feel like me and feel outcasts Like that's like
so close to my heart. So yeah, I'm proud of
being in that position and I love showing you that
(20:03):
you can do whatever you desire to do with your life.
You know, no matter where you're from, or how you
look or what anything about you, it doesn't really matter.
You can just live your life and succeed in it
and be happy.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
Please never stop it because you're just so fantastic at
doing it. Whatever that is. If anyone, if anyone listening
right now, experiences that you walk out of a building
and someone says something really nasty to you, you look
at them and go great, and you say that to
me where you're wearing that you had a mirror, you
had a choice to wear something different, to come down
(20:41):
here and tell me that I'm happy.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Really, I meant to say that to you earlier.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Having fun is what it's all about.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Totally. They so agree, and.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
There's a there's actually believe or not. You look at
these people who are definitely your team, your family. This
is a business as well. You're in the fun business, Kim.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
I know, I got so lucky, Like it's it's it's
definitely it is a job, but since it's what I love,
I just get up every day just so happy to
do everything, and like I never really feel like I'm
not happy doing what I do And I have my
friends around and I have like a crew around me
that I that I adore and love, and.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
Yeah, my fans are the best. Everything's just so great.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
You're it is and being in the fun business but
actually being able to share your fun through your music.
And when this album comes out on June July August third,
I'm gonna start throwing dates out there.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
You know.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
That Juli second release is gonna be great. I can't wait.
I can't wait to hear all these cuts. I want
to hear them all. I don't want to hear just one,
and we have got a great one, but I went
to all of them.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Thank you. I can't wait to play for you.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
We'll bring it on. Let me get you link before
you leave. All these incredible people in the Kim family.
Is she okay? She's a good person to work with. Yeah, no, yeah,
get that.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
What's the next way you're going to try to kill
one of them?
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Let's see, I gotta beat the last one and that
was a pretty epic one.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Well, swim with.
