Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, one man who may be feeling just a few
little aches and paint although he is super fit, so
maybe he isn't. But he has been the architect of
fundraising for child cancer. And I remember talking back to
Aaron Webb in twenty twenty when he organized a marathon
from his house down to the sun, the clock tower
(00:21):
and back to raise money for child cancer. That seemed
to be the beginning of an amazing fundraising venture over
the years now incorporating the Crusaders and yesterday out at
Melbourne Park, Aaron Webb, it was phenomenal the amount of
community input that went into the Child Cancer drive for
(00:41):
twenty twenty five. Aaron, good morning. How are you feeling?
Fest of all?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Oh morning, Leslie? Yeah, yeah, good, A little bit stuff
as you imagine, but yeah, pretty I guess, humbled and
privileged to.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Be part of yesterday. It was an amazing day.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
It was an amazing day. The buzz, the fibe, the
different costumes. People went to a lot of trouble. But
I think you know, underneath it all, you've been very
humble and not accepting any of the accolades that are
due to come to you, because when you think about
how much money has been raised over those years. It
is truly phenomenal. Obviously something close to your heart. But
(01:19):
tell us a little bit about how many laps you did.
You started at six o'clock yesterday, you finished at six pm.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
How was it? Yeah, it was. It was really good.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Actually it was a much cooler day than last year,
which helped.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I think.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
I think we did forty forty two laps by combined
from everybody that was there yesterday, which was an amazing achievement.
I think it was over double what we did the
year before. And you know, we're just onwards and upwards
for the lapse. And I actually don't know how many
I did myself, maybe in the seventies, but we had
(01:54):
a couple of people do one hundred and twelve and
one hundred and fifteen laps. I think it's one hundred
and twelve kilometers, one hundred and fifteen kilometers on the day.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah. Look, I spoke to Crusader's assistant coach, Brad Moore
out there and he was just saying from six o'clock
in the morning, the number of people who were there
on the start line, and not just obviously able bodied people,
but people in wheelchairs and just it struck a chord
with the whole community.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Right, Yeah, it really has. And yes, you're right.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
We had blind runners yesterday with their guides.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
We had children. I think we might have had over.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Twenty children that did a marathon throughout the day. And
you know that those kids are going to be set
up for life with doing something like that. You know,
it's sort of ten eleven, twelve years of age.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah, I mean it's hard to even comprehend, isn't it
what they're doing really when you think about it like that.
So you were aiming to raise two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. What do you think at the moment the
total is?
Speaker 2 (02:58):
I actually haven't had a look this morning. It looked
late last night, so I went to bed. But we're
around about one hundred and ninety something thousand last night,
and we we believe from the last couple of years,
there's a lot comes in the next two days, so
you know, the corporate teams get there, all these sponsorship
are settled in and things like that, so I'm hoping
(03:20):
we'll get really close to that figure. You know, it was, Yeah,
it's been an amazing week. You know, we've just watched
the total go up and up and up every day,
and we know that every dollar that goes into that
pot goes to the Child Cancer Foundation and the work
that they do. And you know, that's a pretty satisfying thought,
that is.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
I mean, that's an amazing amount called of a million,
and you could even surpass it, who knows, because there's
still an opportunity for people to donate, right.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yes, yep, there's on our website.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
There's the text line, there's there and if they know
people that have been in the event yesterday, they all
have their own donation pages that they can go to
as well.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
That all go straight into the pot.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
And every dollar you donate goes straight to the Child
Cans Foundation. There's nobody takes anything out of it, which
is really important to us.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
It is.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Look, I just think it's phenomenal. And you know, you
cannot underplay the part that you have played in starting
all of this.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah, it's a real privilege to be able to start
something like this and then just you know, watch it
catch on and like you said, the people that were
there yesterday and the costumes and the fun that they had,
it's you know, I guess it's like anything in life,
someone has to start it and then anyone else can
carry it on. And yeah, I feel grateful that I
(04:41):
had that idea when I was just in lockdown and
nothing much else to do.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
And look what it's turned into.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, it's phenomenal. And look I know, as an offshoot
of it all, of course, the Crusader players were there,
some all blacks, and for in our black funds as
well of course, and opportunities for photos as well. I mean,
it's made a lot of people's a lot of people happy.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, it was great to have a mus too and
Crusader team there together. Yesterday Crusader team played a game,
you know, an internal game in the morning, and then
both teams came out and did a lap together fully
together and it was amazing to see them kind of
sweeping around the course together.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
And then we had about.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Maybe a dozen of our Crusader players still there at
six o'clock last night. The finish line they were on
the microphone. The energy and the buzz that they were
giving to the community and the fans is what part
of what yesterday was about as well.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah too, right, well, Aeron, We're fantastic look, I hope
that you can ease out those little slight muscle aches,
because we do know how super fit you are. But
you're on deck again at nine o'clock. You're playing, well,
you're not playing, but you're a little person's playing cricket
at nine whereabouts.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Yes, yep, she's out at Swan and Knowa this morning,
so looking forward to that. Although she might be a
little bit uncomfortable today because she managed to get.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
To her mouth on yesterday as well.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Wow, we'll see how she travels around.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
The cricket field this morning.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
What's her name, Madison? Oh medisine Oh, well done to
her and the other little ones that made it through.
That is truly an amazing performance. Well hats off to you.
