Speaker 1 (00:00):
Would you do? Would you be news stooks, he'd be.
It is twenty four away from nine o'clock and we
seem to have been running late all morning. And I'm
apologizing every which way because I am going to apologize
now to Golf New Zealand's Dave Mangan, who is in
charge of all the New Zealand tournament program.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Dave, good morning, Good morning, and no problem at all.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Oh, thank you very much, very kind. So the intero Provincials,
because we've been talking about it quite a lot on
our golf segment, which we're very grateful to the Onward
Trading Company. It is going to start Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, that's correct.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
All the teams will probably be starting to arrive there
from tomorrow. But yeah, our Major Teams Championship that all
the districts around New Zealand and have been working towards
this year, Yes, starts on Tuesday.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
And I know that.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Sorry, yeah, in here with God, Yeah that's what.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
I was going to say. Sorry about that interrupting you
here would and rusty golf courses of course, So these
inter provincials. Where do the inter Provincials rank on the
Golf New Zealand Tournament program.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, it's one of our most most important amateur events,
that's for sure. It's the one where all of our
district associations ten teams and it's that unique opportunity. I mean,
golf such an individual sport, but yeah, the best amateur
golfers from around the country can put on the Auckland,
Wellington and Cannery shirts and represent their province.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So how many golfers are here doing this because this
is men and women, right.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, that's right. So we've got fifteen men's associations and
twelve women associations sending teams. Each team's made up of
five players and are reserved. So on my calculations, that's
one hundred and sixty two golfers will be ascending on
the christ Church area as well as you know the
various managers and support stuff that come along as well.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Look, I think one of the beauties of golf is
that wherever you play, and you've obviously got your home
course wherever you are, but your ability to go round
the country or go around different golf courses, you've got
to adapt to whatever the little sort of idiosyncrasies are
and the fact that you're using here would and Russey,
so that there will be differences between those two golf

(02:06):
courses and the players will just have to adapt.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, they will, and it's obviously a new challenge. It's
a new format that we've moved into with the two
courses the third year that we will have done that. Yeah,
a few differences between Russey and Hereward. Obviously the greens
at Herewood are a little bit more extreme as compared
to the ones at Russy, but both obviously have had
a Greg Turner influence in their in their redesign or

(02:30):
their updates. So yeah, well there'll be some similarities between
the two. There will be a few differences.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
And look, the weather will play a part as well,
and it will either be you know, raw and nor
westers or there's southerly could come through, who knows. Although
I do think it looks pretty good to be fair.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
But it look too bad. As someone who runs golf tournaments,
we always keep an eye on the long range forecast
and it's looking all right. So so fingers crossed, but
no doubt at some stage we'll get we'll get some
strong winds during the week.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, absolutely, So heaps have got what is the competition format.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Essentially over the first four days the teams and teams
of five each player. You rank your players from one
to five, so your best players number one and your
fifth players number five, and they play an opposition player
and you're just trying to get those three wins to
get it to get a point. And at the end
of round robin, the four leading teams men and women
will be at Rusty Golf Club for semi finals and

(03:24):
finals on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Who's your peck I mean, it's quite hard to do that,
isn't that You've got as you've mentioned, fifteen men's twelve women's,
But there must be some favorites.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
They definitely will be. The Auckland men's team and women's
team look very very strong and locals will be happy
to hear that. The Cannery men's team headed by Cooper Moore,
who won the museanod Amateur recently and Yuki Myer, the
national age group champion. The Cannery men's team deffinitely look
very very strong. But in the women's I think you

(03:54):
wouldn't start handing out the trophy to Auckland, but they've
been dominant over the last decade and the game looked
like they will be the team to beat, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Well you've always got to have one of those in
a competition, don't you, The team to beat? So how
can our punders get out to watch?

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Somebody? Just rock up to Russeley and Herewood there's no
entry fee and yeah, you get to see some of
the greatest, the best golfers in New Zealand play and
if you can't get there, you can always follow the
live scoring on our Golf New Zealand website golf dot
co dot NZ.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
So one of the interesting things since COVID, or even
during COVID, we know that the participation in golf, whether
it just be a person going out and having a
hit or being part of a competition, has grown exponentially.
You've got enough courses around the country.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Yeah, look, I think we have. It's a really good point.
A lot of the big city courses and starting to
get very very busy and for the first time in
age is you know the membership full signs are going up,
which is great to see. But you know, you've still
got other country courses around New Zealand they'll be able
to pick up the slack. So I think per capita
we're number two in the world behind Scotland, so I

(04:59):
think we're very blessed and he's only to have so
many paying opportunities and.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
People who take pride in presenting a golf course to
the very best of ability.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Absolutely, and I think that's one of the cool things,
especially when we go to some of the smaller regions.
There's one greenkeeper there, but they work their absolute sorts
off and they've got a volunteer army helping them. And
you know, some of our country courses are presented in
such a mecular condition as well. Well.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
I know that you'll be very busy in the upcoming
week when the interprovincials start, and well obviously if you're available,
would love to get you back next week to get
a little review of how things are going. But all
we can say is enjoy I know you well, but
and may the best golfing team win.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yeah, absolutely, no problem. Thanks for the time and for
having us on.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
No, Dave Mangan, thank you, and yeah, I hope you
do get a little chance to relax and enjoy christ
Chutch as well, because there's plenty of good vibes around
the city at the moment with the hair Dave Mangan
from New Zealand Golf and he's in charge of making
sure sure that all the golfing tournaments go off as
I ment to.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Percent Harvey Norman Ravenswood Central is now open. Come and
