Speaker 1 (00:00):
To welcome Glenn Coglan to the program. Of course, if
you hadn't remembered the name, and I know lots of
people will. He was part of the Canterbury Cardinals and
the Lion Red Cup, also part of the historic Canterbury
side that played the Auckland Warriors in their first ever match.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Glenn, good morning, Good morning Leslie. Thanks for heaving here on.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Oh no, this is so cool. I mean, man, what
you haven't done in your sporting career isn't worth knowing.
I mean you played and transitioned to rugby union, played
for Sydenham before playing for Canterbury and the NPC.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, that's right. Yeah, most of my career was playing
rugby league at the local club halls all here and
then obviously got some representative followers.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
And you've dropped out.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Have you played for Sydnam?
Speaker 1 (00:38):
All right, we just lost you for a minute. There
are you in the corner of the room. No, it
looks as though we're having it. Yep, I've got you now,
but it just seems to be where are you.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I'm just at home.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Okay, it's just that the phone's dropping out a little bit,
that's all. Okay, we'll keep going and see how we
get on. So but the important thing is for your golf. Now,
you were a debutante in the Hanally Mean's master's golf
team that took out the South Island title at the
Vicar with Golf Club. Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, thanks very much. I sort of got back into
golf earlier this year, just threw a bunch of mates,
mostly at Templeton and we went up to the New
Zealand Seniors for a bit of fun and actually did
quite well there and I thought, well, maybe I should
have a bit of a cracket getting into some competitive
golf again. So it sort of led right through and yeah,
(01:27):
into sort of the Woodward Cup and I think some
competitive golf at Master's. So it's been quite good.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
So what's your handicap at the moment?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
My handicaps won.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Wow, Oh that's amazing. Have you always played golf, you know,
as a breakaway from the other two.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, not realized. I guess most sports people sort of
played golf socially, and I did really at the back
end of my rugby rugby league career. So and I
guess I've always sort of been quite handy. I've been
able to pick up sports in general. So yes, So
golf was just in addition to that.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Not your best part is it the long game or
the short game?
Speaker 2 (02:10):
It can it can be, It can differ every day
every round. I think my iron players is quite good.
I feel like I can control my irons quite well,
so that I think that's probably one of my strengths.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
So how did you enjoy playing at the Masters?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, it was great. It was a great opportunity playing
down in the Cargole. I'd actually played the course luckily a
couple of weeks before, but just the opportunity to play
with some really experienced players. There was a couple of
Rockies myself and leon Ye joined the team and it
was great. The camaraderie within the team was really good.
(02:47):
We were defending the trophy, so that's there was a
little bit more pressure, but just the just the opportunity
and the confidence to compete against the best in the
South Island was was really good. And to come away
with with the trophy again and have a few wins,
you know, on a personal note, was really pleasing.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, fantastic. And it's not like you're just picking up
that and going to that tournament because you are as
you mentioned, part of the Templeton team and that is
competition leading the Woodward Cup.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yeah, that's right. Again, Templeton has been very successful over
the last few years and there's some core group of guys.
You know, I've got friends and browser Geordie, Dan Tom
and a new guy who's just joined the club, Cam Grant,
So you know, still very competitive team. There's a few
of us that's sort of competing for positions which is
(03:37):
really really good for the culture. So yeah, hopefully we
can continue. We've got a double header again tomorrow out
at Clearwater.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Well, you're obviously able to get around the golf course, okay,
back to back, eighteen holes whatever, because you've played rugby league.
You've played rugby, so the body's holding up.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Well yeah, yeah, golf is a lot easier on the body.
But you still have that competitive opportunity in golf and
it's a great way to socialize as well, so you
can use it any which way you want.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
So going to the NRL and given that it is
the big finale twenty twenty four and the Storm the Panthers,
who do you fancy?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, I'm always going to say the Panthers because I've
been a Panther supportive for ever since I was a
young fella. So I'm going to say the Panthers. It's
going to be a great game. Hope, it's going to
be a great game. But I'd like to see the
Panthers win again. It will be sort of a record
in this modern era.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, I mean, what do you make of the NRL?
I mean, it still is you know, when you get
to this stage, it's just so tough, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Oh yeah, you know it comes down to sort of
millimeters inches. You know, one mistake here can be costly
to any team. So yeah, it's just unbelievable their athleticism
of players nowadays compared to maybe when I was running
around twenty five years ago.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Oh, I mean that's you know, it's all relative though,
isn't it really?
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Definitely Yeah, Yeah, it's a fantastic spectacle and it's all
it's always good to watch when I get the opportunity.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
So do you go down to the club rooms at all,
either for rugby or league?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, I definitely try to get down to both the
halls of rugby league club. They have a couple of
old boys days and club days, so and I've got
some family members playing in the nursery grade, so try
to get down to if it's not the domain, down
to the agricultural part to watch a couple of games
of footy. And same with Sydenham. They have the Blazer
Boy days. So it's always good to catch up with
(05:40):
the guys that you sort of ran around and put
your body on the line against, you know, because you know,
it's always good to catch up with those guys here.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
I mean, you've clearly been a very competitive man and
still are with your golf, which is fantastic and the
fact that you're totally immersed in the sporting world.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, I guess it's it's just been it's just been
great to be able to you know now that you
know I played, I did play a little bit of golf,
you know, after I retired from football and then you know,
the family comes along, so I sort of had a
bit of a break, but just in the last few
years been able to get back into it. Kids are
old enough now, so because it does you know, competitive
golf does take a lot of time with practice and
(06:21):
you know that type of stuff. So it's been good
this year to have another crack and try and put
myself up against the best in the in the region.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Well, we're going to watch you with great interest to
see where you end up. Will you have you ever
got a hole in one? I always love asking golf
as this.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, yeah, I have one hole in one. When I
first joined up after finishing football a couple of good
mates so they just retired from senior cricket and we
joined up out at McLean's Island and I had my
first hole in one out there.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Oh fantastic. Oh, will you'll be looking for more?
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Oh, well, you're a sport for coming to the phone,
Glenn Coldlan. We really appreciate it. All we can say
is all the very best for your coming golfing success
both locally and at master's level, and you will be
watching with great interest.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Oh thanks very much.
Speaker 1 (07:07):

Panthers right definitely. For more from News Talks at b
