Speaker 1 (00:00):
News talks. He'd be twenty five minutes away from nine
o'clock Nick Gully here on the Canterbury All Sorts Breakfast
in for Leslie Murdock. Time for our regular golf segments
in partnership with the Elmwood Training Company and this week
going on the program we've got. He goes affectionately by Dutchy,
John Radamakers get a John going mate. All right, yeah,
(00:22):
very well, thank you, thanks for taking the time for
a chat. Of course, you are the selector for the
men's representative team that is going to take part in
these South Island into provincials that are held here in
christ Church at Russy and Herewood next weekend. Tell us
a little bit more about it, Dutchy, Who is who's
taking part? First of all?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Sure well, firstly, I'm not a part of the team
that with Matt McClain. He's the other co selector and
he's a professional on the circuit at the moment. But
basically what happens is with when I spoke with Leslie,
we started the whole year by looking at players that
had pretty good scores at the ordered merit tournaments or
(01:03):
their local stroke tournaments and be sort of shortlisted to
fifteen to twenty players and we waited for the end
club competition to start in August and we've tracked the
win loss record and who they've beaten on the way,
and out of all of that is now the pointing
end of the season where we've got probably about a
(01:23):
dozen players all playing this Sunday at Rusty and we're
running a bit of a bit like a trial where
we've got some guys that are pretty well certain in
the team, but there's also probably five or six players
that are playing for two or three spots and so
we've paired them up together at Rusty which will be
(01:45):
which will be a host course at the Nationals and
basically they're eventually playing for a spot and it just
means that there'll be a little bit of pressure, which
is good, and we want them to perform at their
home track. We want them to form against each other
at top the top players in Canterbury and hopefully we'll
(02:07):
announce it to the South Island team eight man South
Island team straight after the event and then they'll play
it Hereward and Russley on the nineteen to twenty of
us of this month at the South Island and the
provincial event. So that's how things are going at the moment.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Nothing like a bit of pressure, I'm sure. Is it
just as simple dutchy as whoever performs or whoever goes
lawa tomorrow gets in.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Well, Basically, these guys have been playing all year and
it's come to the point where there are players that
have very similar performances and it basically comes down to
them playing eighteen holes where they're playing against each other.
They're playing the match play event, and they're not finishing early.
They're just going straight right through the eighteenth hole and
(02:58):
they're recording their scores. And basically whoever I mean, it
will be because I've they've all got similar performances. It
will basically be the person that's come through that will
have the the not I guess, I mean, I'll have
to They need to consult with Matt about it. We
need to talk about it, and and that's that's the
(03:19):
way things are going. But we wanted we want people
to pick themselves rather than the rely on the politics
of golf selectors.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah, fair enough. Just tell us for those unfamiliar with
the local golf scene, who is in the mix. And
I suppose secondary to that it must be a great
position to be in that you've got this strength and depth.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yes, sure, I mean there are there are three players
that really put the hand up all year and they've
played very well at national events, They've played well in
the club, they've featured the best stroke scores at the
tournaments and earlier in the year. And they are Sam McGill,
Kuper Moore and Yuki Meyer. Yuki Meyer is the news
in an under nineteen champ. Cooper Moore just got back
(04:02):
from Asia Pacific, which is the international tournament. He came
eighth out of a strong international field. And Sam McGill
he's gone through the whole year without being beaten, so
and he's playing top notch players all the way through
the season. So those three guys are pretty well certain.
And then you have probably five or six players that
are sort of on the fringe who we've peered up
(04:26):
against each other and it's right down to the bottom line. Now,
it's really good, and I think it's an environment we
want to try and test them. We want them to
experience that environment now because that's the sort of environment
they will strike when they go to the nationals.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
I was going to ask you about Cooper more Dutchy
and that performance, Yeah, t eight at the Asia Pacific
Amateurs over there in Japan. Was he just sixteen years
of age. What really strikes me though, is his temperament
at this age. He's a serious talent, isn't he He is?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Is he came eighth as the Asia Pacific. We wanted
to team him up. We wanted to pair him up
against kazum of Kobori, so we wanted him to play.
He's going to be probably our number one player of
the for the event, so we wanted to test him.
But he just got back from Japan last Monday or Tuesday.
(05:23):
He's feeling a bit jaded, and we felt that that's
a probably a good idea that we're just give him
a bit of a rest and let the others battle.
But he's certainly a talent. He's been playing since he
had died. He's been winning all the club championships at
age twelve thirteen, and now he's really reached an age
(05:46):
where he's very mature. He's well supported by his parents
and who are always there watching him, and this kid's
going to go a long way. He's a very good player.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
I was just going to ask him about Kazuma Kabori.
I think it was. Was it last week Dutchy over
there at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championships in Scotland which
featured the Homer Golf St Andrew's a really strong performance
for cosumers. So is he coming back home now and
potentially involved in these interprovincials or nationals coming up?
Speaker 2 (06:17):
I'm not sure about his plans. I would say that
his whole focus is on his professional circuit and coming
back he may who knows, he may come back for
the New Zealand Open, but he's pretty well entrenched in this,
in the in this, in the European circuit, playing exceptionally well.
(06:37):
He's not a by professional there was He's not a
long player, but the all around game is impeccable. He's
very good around the greens and that's what we're expecting
out of our players as well.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
So just run us through that timeline again, Dutchess. You've
got this trial tomorrow at Russy and then you'll get
a squad of about eight plays and then you've got it.
You've got to eventually get it to five. What are
those key dates in terms of South Island into Provincials
next weekend and then looking ahead to December.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Basically the trial is tomorrow there is it's involving ten
players and then we'll get that down to eight players
to represent the South Island Interprovincial event and then from
there we pack five plan and a reserve six players
for the Nationals which is on the third to the
seventh of December. So we'll be announcing the South Island
(07:35):
team straight after the event tomorrow, and we'll be announcing
the national and interprovincial team straight up to the South
Islands as well. So it's really at the point of
the end of the season and we're now dealing with
the best players in Canterbury and that's how the whole
(07:56):
process of trialing them through the whole year has come
down to the stage.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Exciting times. Hey Douchy, thanks so much for your time
here on the Canterbury All Sports Breakfast.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
You're welcome mate, good to speak to you. Bye.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
Likewise, that's as John aradamakers they're out of Canterbary Golf
part of that selection panel.
