Speaker 1 (00:00):
The weekends.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Finally here let's kick it off the All Sport Breakfast
with Rutherfand and Bond Toyota and King Toyota used talk
zedby nineteen past eight here on the All Sport Breakfast.
In PC semi finals underway today ten past four. They
have Plenty hosting Canterbury at the titing of Domain. She
didn't expect that when we looked at the quarter finals
line up last weekend, did we? And then it's Wellington

(00:22):
at home the Lions hosting Whitecar at sky Stadia right
here in Wellington tonight at ten past seven. Interesting week
of changes for the Wellington lines. Couple of injuries Jackson
Garden bashup and Peter among A Jensen out of the
match through injury and concussion respectively. Obviously, all the All
Blacks who featured last weekend and I thought were very

(00:44):
influential and helped them to that big win over Counties,
they're all gone. And then the great news from Wellington
perspective during the week for Peter Larkeye and his career
because he got a last minute call up to join
the All Blacks who flew out to Japan for their
end of year two earlier in the week. So no
Peter Larkeye for the Wellington Lions this week as well,
so compared to last week, a rather new look team

(01:05):
that'll be taking to the fields Tonight's against White Cuto
in the semi finals. I mean, can't really complain about
some of the experience though still Caleb delaneing dupla c
ekdv Brad Shields. That's the loose forward trio, Xavier Numir
in the front row, Kyle Preston and Callum Harken the
two Old Boys University teammates there nine to ten respectively

(01:25):
tonight that'll be good and Riley Higgins, whose great season continues.
He's remaining in the number twelve Jersey and Matt proc
to the veteran coming in to start at center. Matt's
had a bit of an injury through the year, but
great to see he is back ready to go. So yes,
they've lost some personnel, but I think still a very
competitive side for Wellington to take on wit Cutou tonight.
And let's chat to one of those loose forwards that

(01:46):
I mentioned. Caleb Delaney obviously a lock and loose forwards
a hurricane as well, but he is on the starting
side for the Wellington Lions tonight Caleb is with us. Now,
morning to your Caleb mate, thanks for chatting. Big day
and night ahead for the Wellington Lions. So how's the
teams that have dealt with I guess the injuries and
all those personnel changes coming into this big Final four match?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yep, good morning. Yeah, firstly, few injuries, not the idea
of situation, but the theft we have in the groups
is unreal. Players are just able to come into the
starting team and do a job. They just have to
focus on what they need to do and yeah, the
other boys are back them up.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, how are you sort of in terms of adapting
to a lot of different players, There's been a lot
of different loose forward trios in the lines this year.
Nice to have Brad Shields and DUPLEF fit again though,
But yeah, how's it been sort of adapting to a
week by week.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Yeah, it's been pretty easy, to be honest. There's always
been there one one or two older Lucy's in there
with likes of bread or dopes and yeah, everyone has
their their strengths, so likes the dupes getting over the
ball and stuff. It's pretty easy to fit in when
them boys are playing, and then when the younger boys
come up, it's they just have to do their job

(03:01):
and focus on that.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
What kind of assessment did you guys give the win
over Counties last week? What does sort of take out
of that at the start of the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, we got obviously a lot of confidence from that game,
especially what happened last time with them, But we just
know it's going to be a physical game this week.
We know the intensity that the semi final brings. If
we can get the dominance at Beasts that we're after,
I think the Beasts can do a job about.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Wide your experience in this team, you obviously experienced super
rugby level as well. How do you use it to
go about making sure you're peaking at the right time
aka playoff rugby.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Yeah, started off with the injury earlier in the season
and for me it was just about getting that that
match fitness back. But I'm fizzing now and yeah, player
foot is where you want to be playing your best,
So yeah, no, pretty sure, I guess.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, And the team has been familiar with with playoffs
as well. There's obviously a few new squad members, but
as it a sort of team environment that you know
everyone thrives on on the enjoyment of playoff rugby.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, everyone definitely wants to be playing in this one.
I think the energy we brings throughout the week, I
freaking nail that. Then it just flows through onto the
game and we don't even think about the pressure moments
when they come, they just they just happened and we
execute it. So yeah, it's good. We've been in this
scenario before, but yeah, nothing really changes too much for us.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Tell us about your teammate Peter Larkeye last minute call
up to join the All Blacks, departed on on seers
Day to head over with with them. Obviously a loss
for the Lions, but you know, just tell us as
a teammate at both super rugby and MPC level, you
know how special it is for them getting that call.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Up, Oh mate, with all stoke for them. Obviously it's
a massive loss for us, but that's the goal is
to get boys into that All Black team and if
we can play well as a team outside certain players
and it pushes them forward for that to their next step.
So worst stoke for them, and I'm sure it would
go well if he gets the shot.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
How nice was it? And how much of a boost
for that Counties game was it having the handful of
a these guys also back obviously a special occasion for
TJ fairwelling the Wellington fans once more. But you just
describe the impact that those guys had on the team
as you got through the start of the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, obviously if you watch the game, you saw the
impact they had lots of stuff for and yeah, two
J's final game, it was we wanted to send them
off well. And yeah, just the leadership they bring and
the physicality mainly it hits the boys up and we're
able to start well that game and yeah, flow through
to the end. Know, they bring a massive, massive part

(05:33):
of the team.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
And looking at the back line, obviously a couple more injuries,
there is a forward pack to you sort of change
your roles at all. Given it's a bit more of
an inexperienced back line than what the lines have had
for a lot of the season.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
We don't change too much. We go out there to
dominate and if we can do that then we've see
a good platform. But yeah, we've got new boys in there,
but I've got slightly different styles to previous boys. But
that's also a good thing. Yeah, as far as we're
just looking to dominate and get that set piece dominance
and physicality around the breakdown, and yeah, they're able to

(06:07):
play on top and scored the good tries out wide.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah. Great, and a few unexpected results. Kind of had
to happen to have White Cutter as your opponents this week,
hen what did you make of the results last week?
And then I guess focusing on on White Cutter, what's
been talked about them as the opponents this weekend?

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, that's definitely a great team. No, I didn't really
look too much into the results, just focus on who
we got next and why cutles that team. So yeah,
we've got a plan in place, we know we're up
to and I'm sure we'll be able to go into
a job on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
How tight have you found the whole NP set? It
was such a congested table for so long of the competition,
not many points separating you know, the whole teams that
were really in the mix for the quarter finals. On
the fields, How competitive has it been, Caleb compared to
maybe previous years?

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Oh, Mat as you've seen the like the Counties game
against Uff, So any team can be any team on
the day, just need to make sure we turn up.
I mean most teams have stacked with super good players,
so yeah, it's a great level and it's real competitive,
so I'm srying to break watch as well exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
And how much support or how much does the support
mean to you when you hear a few more fans
through the gates at Sky Stadium. Obviously you know you
guys have been sort of involved with the community this
year few games at Potty deal. But what does it
mean having you know, the noise from the crowd to
try and cheer you guys on at the stadium? Oh?

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Mate, I mean it means everything, especially when you're running
out there. It's a good crowd and the boys ready
feed off the energy and the more people can hit
there this weekend the better. So yes, the pactice downs
stands as you can.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Yeah, absolutely, calm, great to chat mate, Really appreciate your
time here on News Talks THEB and on behalf of
all our listeners across Wellington. All the very best tonight.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
