Speaker 1 (00:00):
Talking bowls and great to welcome back into the studio
Jason Puddock. Jason, morning to you get to have.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
You back morning, Adam.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Right, Well, busy weekend for everyone. Into club underway for
the summer today and the looks of it, a lot
of teams, a lot of grades. Everyone will be pretty excited.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Ye're looking forward to the kicking off the premiere club
competition of the season with twenty four clubs across eleven divisions,
with one hundred and three teams and over six hundred
and fifty players participating each week. So weather looks good,
so we're looking forward to getting out on those greens.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Six hundred and fifty that's great. How does that compare
to sort of previous years off the top of your head.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, that those numbers fluctuate slightly, probably come down a
little bit, but it's a huge number in terms of
playing competitive bowls on a weekly basis. So, and that's
across the men and women, so it's great to see.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yeah. All right, well let's get to some of these games.
We'll start with the women's Division one competition. What have
we got around the greens today?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, So first off, we've got Victoria who will be
hosting Upper Hut who have been promoted from the Second
Division last year. Miramar, who newly promoted again, will be
playing Plymoton at Plymoton. Silver Stream host Tawa Stakes Valley
travel Den I know, so that's a bit of a
local derby there. Stakes Valley will be missing Angela and

(01:14):
Lily's signal mother and daughter. They are often Nelson playing
in the Stoke Invitation Women's Peers. But I think Match
of the day's going to be Patoni Central hosting the
defending champions Johnsonville and again Johnsonville missing Dale, Rayner and
Kara and Guildford who are away at Stoke. So a
good chance for po Tony to put one over Johnsonville

(01:35):
at the start of the season on their on their
carpet at home, so a big chance for them this weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Well, johnson will get the chance to face them again
later in the season. Is that how it works.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, it's there's ten teams, so it's nine rounds over
round robin and then the top four will go into
a playoff, So both those teams make the playoff field.
They'll certainly play each other again later in the season
as we they fight to represent Wellington into National finals
later in the season.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Okay, what about the men's.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
So men's we've got Stakes Valley treving to Miramar, Plymoton
host Nino who are the defending champs. Johnsonville at home
against Lowell Bay, a newly promoted Tawa will be up
against Ireland Bay and the second of the promoted teams
this year, Patoni Central will come up against Victoria at
Victoria again pick of the day for me. We've got

(02:25):
the newly promoted pat Central team spearheaded by Steve Ditford
and new and Wong, both current Wellington Rep players, and
that'll see Steve Dipford going head to head with Ray
Martin and the single So that should be a doozy
of a game.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
And we're looking good too, So yeah, looking forward to
hearing how some of those games pan out. And you
mentioned some Rep players there into full swing this weekend
as well.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, first hit out on tomorrow for the Rep teams,
so we'll see the open teams start their campaign, I
guess working towards in de Center later in the season,
which is going to be hosted in Wellington where the
men in that National Winter Center will be going for
the three peat after winning the last two national finals,
so an important year. The players are certainly up for

(03:09):
it and looking forward to kicking things off. So we
start off with the men Open men and women will
be playing the Barry Winks Memorial Trophy against man Tu.
Barrie was a top New Zealand power athlete, played Commonwealth
Games and irregular manure two rep Plan well Inton. We're
looking to defend that trophy that they won last year
where the men's and women's scores are combined to get

(03:32):
the overall winner. On the day, I think special mention
we've got two players making their open men's debut and
that is Jordan Keene from Staates Valley and James McMillan
from Patoni Central. So those two players both under twenty,
both stepping up from the development team last year, so
a big day for those guys to make their mark

(03:52):
and try and work their way into that top seven
later in the season. And there'll be played at Tawa
tomorrow ten am start, so if you're in the area,
certainly drop down and support those Wellington senior teams. At
the same time, we've got the Development men and women
playing for the Tricks Welsh Trophy which was first played
for over one hundred years ago between the two centers

(04:12):
and has been revived. Sort of drifted off a bit,
but we've brought it back again. Wellington will be defending
that trophy again. Men and women's scores combined to find
the overall winner and they'll be played at Bowls Palmerston North.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Wow. Well seasons really underweight now, isn't it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Look and the weathers come come good day.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Were like that.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
We're outdial bowlers, so you know those outdoor sports. We
really like the sun, we don't really like the rain.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, exactly. Hopefully it stays that way. Jason. Great to
see you again, Thanks as always. Well chat Nex Saturday.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Thank you, Adam. Have a good day. For more from
