Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodarkeys Off the Record podcast with Greg.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Prim Let's have a chat with Kiko Kilder.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
There we Kilder Greek. How's it going?
Speaker 4 (00:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Really well? Thanks mate? You in Auckland is that right?
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Ah?
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Cruising around the streets at the moment. Thanks for having
a chat with us. Tell us about this band. How
long have you guys been together?
Speaker 3 (00:24):
We've been together since twenty seventeen. All the members of
the band kind of played in various rock bands around Auckland.
Me and the lead guitarist, Cutter Gordon met up one
day after playing a gig. Thought it would be a
good idea to record a rock tune in Todel and
see how that would go. Did a bit of an
experiment recorded Patti paida here, which is the first kick
(00:47):
or song. The song ended up sounding so great that
we decided to form an entire band around it.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yeah, and whose idea was it to write to it?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
How do a translates to half or half cast? So
I wanted to rite song about being half cast, kind
of collaborate on the lyrical front with my cousin Hoyepper McLain.
He wrote the rest of it basically.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, and there's a bit of guitar work from Carter Gordon.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, he's really good. We're pretty greedy on the guitars
with this band. With there's three of us, there's also
Lucas Podocutter would kind of slaze it in this track
as well. Outside of those two guitarists Lucas and Kutter,
there's Phil Peters and Wyndam Bradfield in the rhythm section. Yeah.
I've been playing music with them since I was about fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
So you're going back high school days. Did you join
other bands? And then what brought you guys back together?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
The single of our band kind of passed away? Maybe
when we're in our early twenties, there was a band Tunguadour,
and so that band kind of fizzled out. And then yeah,
years later, after deciding to form a tel kind of
rock band, got the boys back in and yeah, actually
a lot of the kind of style like stylistically speaking,
(02:00):
and it hearkens back to the original band tunguad All
that we were in all those years ago.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So as we go into it, what else should we
know about the song?
Speaker 3 (02:09):
In this track? We tried to fuse in a bit
more of a hip hop feel with the rock. There's
there's a bit of a tip to the hat to
the old Doctor Dre with the old Simpson and whatnot.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
All right, let's check it out.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
My name is Looy maclay. I'm from the Bandko and
this is our new track. You listen to radio, we.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Line up Yah you ain't come it, my Brother.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Nobody, Kiddy, my Cold, the Brother Knightbody come out.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
It's radly a hoard ache and that is brain new
from Kiko. It's called ho to It and we're lucky
enough to have Lewi from the band on a zoom
with us now. Mate, thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Kilder Greg, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Is that part of a bigger project? Is there an EP?
Is there an album? What are the future plans?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Well, we basically released an EP last December that was
called Waharua and this is the first single since then.
This is probably the first of a string of singles
that we've got kind of lined up that will hopefully
form another EP that we released either end of this
year early next.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Year looking ahead to the summer months. Any plans are
performing and if so, what do you reckon?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Have some summer shows around Auckland. You'll catch us at
Whiting at one of the big festivals, and we've just
lined up like an Auckland City Council geg and whatnot.
But hopefully maybe out to Northland and maybe head down
to Wellington.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Well, we'll keep an eye on your pages for those
ones for details as they get confirmed. I imagine when
you guys play live having a guitarist like Kara Gordon,
the songs can stretch out a little bit that man
likes to unleash in some guitar solos.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Oh yeah, definitely gets a bit hectic. We like to
get a bit carried away on the guitar solo and
the breakdowns and whatnot. But yeah, if you get a
chance to come see kick or Live, hardly suggest it.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Are there any other bands doing what you do?
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Well, there's the boys from Alien Weaponry who are a
bit heavier than us, but they're definitely holding it down.
There's another band that's just come out called to Tokotaru,
which kind of like a multi rock band. But yeah,
outside of that, I don't know if there's that many
kind of bands like us kind of doing it doing
it heavy and yeah, we kind of got the lead
(07:31):
zip feel or we like to kind of keep that
Hendrix type stuff, but also just bringing it forward.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
And you mentioned alien weaponry. There's a documentary about those
guys screening at the Civic Theater in Auckland tonight as
part of the film festival. I understand it's going to
do the rounds in the country soon. Maybe as you're
driving around Auckland not far from a suiting, you want
to pop in and check that out. But I was
gonna ask, are you guys happy having cameras follow you around?
Could we maybe one day see a documentary on Kiko?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
I could do cutter stepe. You want to tick a behind.
He'll go from playing guitar solos opening up a boxing
match to fighting in the heavyweight heavyweight boxing match. So
I see that probably worth filming.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Interesting guy, I didn't know that about him. I've heard
of an artist called Kiko Bun. Any significance there for
the band Kiko that you're in.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Nah, are they Japanese by any chants? British actually British?
Oh yeah, no, no reference to that, just for the listeners.
Kickers kind of short for kick or dongey, which is
the Mlori word for blue or basically the flesh of
ungy Nui and that's where the kind of name the
rise from.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
If we want to follow your guys journey for the
rest of twenty twenty four and beyond, where's the best
place to find some information about you?
Speaker 3 (08:46):
Instagrams, all Things kick all and Facebook just Yeah kick
or art and music. We've got two EP's out now
about ten tracks, all up, Get amongst It.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Therewa from Kiko, Thanks for your time on HEDAKI.
