Hello there, and welcome into the Thursday edition, well this
Thursday anyway, the January thirty, Thursday edition of the Sports
Fox podcast. That was a very long winded way of
saying the date. I'm Jason Pine, Thursday thirty edition.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
That's just a tongue to ust to get on you,
Jason Pine. I'm Darthy Waldgrave. Welcome on into the Fix.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Good to have you with us.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Now. I know it's only January, but can we talk
to Rugby League on the pod today?

Speaker 5 (00:48):
Yes?

Speaker 6 (00:49):
Sure?

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Why not? A?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
It's getting closer. You can almost smell it, can't you.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Who is going to wear the captain's armband for the Warriors?
We can discuss this at depth. Have you got an
expert you can call upon for this?

Speaker 3 (01:00):
So there's a bloke who pulled on the skipper's jersey
I ninety plus time for the Warriors. You may now
book Steve Price. So I think he's got a rough
idea about what's required. So we'll talk to him about
where he sits in that positional selection and what happens next.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
He's up shortly, all right, and a couple of our
sporting dames. One is retiring, one is going again. Dame
Sophie Pasco Dame Lisa Carrington will talk about their legacies
and their ongoing achievements when we enter the chamber as well.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
So let's get into it.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
In other news, Underway is always with a look at
the big sports stories around today. New Zealand's greatest ever Paralympian,
Dames Sophie Pasco, has officially retired eleven gold medals in Paralympics.
Determined though, to keep inspiring future generations.

Speaker 7 (01:52):
I will continue to be a voice of change, an
advocate of inclusion, inspire others and toward a sporting landscape
where every athlete, regardless of ability, has the chance to dream,
the push further and redefine what is possible.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
New Zealand driver Marcus Armstrong feeling light years ahead of
last year when it comes to preparations for his second
full season in IndyCar. He's moving from Chipkinair Seed to
Maya Shank for twenty twenty five, but says it's been
relatively seamless We're going to.

Speaker 5 (02:20):
Have some continuity, which is important in a championship that's
this comparedive and fundamentally we're going to keep the same
car set up, philosophy which helps me hit the ground running.
So you're optimistic about the season and I've got to
say that we're light years ahead of where we were
last year.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
And a second half turnaround to see Manchester City avoid
a group stage elimination in the Champions League for the
first time in twelve years.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Manchester City keep their Champions League dreams alive.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
The twenty twenty three winners were made to fight hire
by Nikki Hyantz Klaubbruger.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Leading a vix.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
We've got just the ticket.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
It's Sports Vix powered by Newstalk CVY.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
The Warrior season is drawing closer, so who is going
to captain the merry Band of Meanwhile, I'm going to
talk to a guy right now who's had experience in
that space ninety plus times he's been the captain of
the Warriors. He joins us now. His name's Steve Price.
Steve how you I'm very very well. I don't have

(03:22):
a decision around who I annoint as the captain for
the wars and that's something that's what It's well on
its way and if anyone knows a bit about captaining
the Warriors, it's you. How many times ninety plus?

Speaker 6 (03:36):
Yeah, Yeah, it's a huge honor mate. Obviously, I really
enjoyed my time at the club and particularly being one
of the leaders, just because you've got to see beside
your name doesn't Maanny the only one had obviously Reuben
and Stacey and so many other guys in the team
that played a huge role in the leadership of the group.
And that's where the boys are going to be at currently.

(03:58):
You know, like even though there's going to be someone
with one or two, I'm not sure what the coach
is going to do. But if you know there's a guy,
you pretty much toss the coin and you speak to
the referee. But there's so many more players are part
of the group that are going to play well. Everyone
plays a leadership role in some way. That's what you
want anyway. But I think probably stand out would be

(04:21):
probably James. You know, obviously the club has bought him
for everything that he brings. I believe that he's doing
what he does best and that's leading with his actions.
Probably still talking to the boys, you know, obviously coming
to the new club and really trying to lift those
standards and that's what he's been brought over to the Warriors.

(04:44):
And he's the current Kerey captain as well, which you
know is he's doing such a great job there. So
whether he's the guy with the CE beside his name,
he's still going to do what he does. Mitch Barnett
I thinks, really growing as a player and his presence
on the field, and then there's so many other guys
who could probably put their hand up as well, you know,

(05:06):
even when you start to consider front railway. So he's
not going to be on the field the whole time,
but that's where you rely on the whole group to
play a role and you really want to encourage every
individual to be a leader in their own way. So
I think, yeah, exciting fins for the Warriors, and I
don't think they've only got one or two options. I

(05:28):
think they've got many options they could choose for all
different sorts of reasons. But everyone's still going to do
the same thing they're going to do and play the
same role they're going to play. Anyway, whether they've got
the captain next to their name or.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Not sit in culture. How important is that in your
mind from a captain. This is not on field culture.
This is what happens in the training pad of the
stuff we don't see. Where does that's it?

Speaker 6 (05:52):
I think it's probably the most integral part of success
and consistency. Actually listening to Ivan's book at the moment,
and you know, that's a fair reason why the Panthers
have been in for or one for out of US
five Grand Finals. He's a massive advocate of culture and

(06:15):
connection and that's why guys who leads the Panthers like
Stephen Crichton and you know Andrew Webster as a coach.
I'm sure by James going to the club that's going
to be very very important for him, but also for
Andrew to be embedding that. And I think they've been

(06:36):
doing a fantastic job. And you don't want to be penans,
you want to be your own identity, and I think
the Warriors are starting to find what that identity is.
And I think someone like James coming in is really
going to be able to you know, I suppose spur
that on even more both on and off the.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Field conduit between the captain and the team even though
you say it very much as a group effort, and
we know that that the importance of understanding what the
coach wants to sit down and what he needs. It's
not one way traffic because it's very much a team effort.

Speaker 6 (07:10):
Yeah it is, mate, And I think you know, you
don't always have the coach say this is what I want, mate,
because usually the guy that they pick is living and
breathing and doing that. And that's probably why James would
be a great example is that you hear and you
see him on the training paddock, and then you hear
and you see him on the footy field as well,

(07:30):
and there's really no difference between either. He's very consistent,
you know what you're going to get every single game.
He doesn't say a lot, but when he does say something,
guys stop and listen. Very similar to Signmon mannering. You know,
he's an action man rather than a wordsman, but if
he does want to say something, he will say it
and everyone listens. So he's very inspiration on how he

(07:55):
goes about his stuff and that's why he's a massive
signing to the club. You know, I just can't think
of any better signing that the Warriors could have had
other than James. And if he gave him that, you
actual title, I think it'd be hugely he'd be very
proud and very excited to play that extra responsibility. But

(08:16):
also it wouldn't change him about how he goes with
early stuff because that's what he does. And obviously that's
to worry. It's so valuable, super.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Hard to carry for one man for an entire team.

Speaker 6 (08:28):
We get that.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
And on that note, Steve will let you get on
with your day. Thanks so much for joining us. As always,
the pleasure has been ours. After yourself, big feller. I'm
sure we'll catch up again at some stage during the season.

Speaker 6 (08:40):
Up the wires, yeah, mate, and all the best to
whoever gets namely captain, huge honor.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
This is Sportsfix, your daily does of sports news, how
news talks.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Dame Sophie Pasco retired today. She's finally given up getting
up before the birds to go for a dip. She
leaves an incredible wake of success behind her, numerous medals,
all sorts of colors in all sorts of championships. Of course,
the ones will remember the most are the eleven golds

(09:15):
she won at a Paralympic level, it's hard to look
past her success and her medal count. But in Dame
Sophie Pasco's case, I think it's easy to look beyond
what she has achieved as an athlete, as an olympian,
as a paralympian. I think it's important that we put
athlete before all of those, because in essence, she is

(09:38):
an athlete first, but also a terrific human being. She
has an extraordinary never say die attitude. Like most top athletes,
she shows massive application in her chosen sport from the
outside looking in inspirational, generational, aspirational parasport are lucky to

(10:01):
have a woman like that in the midst to show
not only the world, but more importantly young New Zealand athlete,
that application will overcome numerous obstacles in your chosen career
and your chosen path. In Sophie's case, and I can't
speak for her because I don't know her personally, but
i'd suggest when you have an accident like she did

(10:24):
and the amputation that she had, it'd be easy enough
to sit down, not necessarily give up, but chase something else.
But she didn't see this as an obstacle, and she
moved forward like it wasn't problematic. It was something that
she dealt with, something that she lives with, and something
that has accelerated her into the pantheon of all time

(10:47):
New Zealand sports greats. The Paralympic movement are lucky to
have a woman like that involved. And here is hoping,
taking into account the passion and her words when she retired,
that she in some way, shape or form, carries on
her relationship with Paralympics New Zealand, with swimming New Zealand
and carries on being this inspiring character for the youth

(11:09):
of today. Dame Sophie Pasco is extraordinary and her career
needs to be celebrated.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Let us pop into the chamber. You and I Darcy
Georgia chat with Steve Price. Want to get to the
Warriors Captain c thing in a moment, but can we
talk about the two dames who are in the news today,
our sporting dames. Let's start with Dame Sophie Pasco. Loved
your thoughts on her. I can only add that I
think she will go down as our greatest Olympian, not

(11:42):
just Paralympian but our greatest Olympian over four Paralympic Games.
She would have gone to Paris had she not become
a mum. First one in Beijing at the age of fifteen,
she won three gold medals.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
It's going to be hard to ever top her.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
Yeah. I like to consider, as I said, athlete first,
and then you go Olympian, then Paralympian. I think she
not trying to dismiss the Paralympics extraordinarily important, but I
see her as rising above most of that. She is
an athlete and a wonderful athlete, a successful athlete. He's
been everywhere, had done everything. She's an absolute rockstar.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I just love the way she advocates as well.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
She is an absolute advocate as many of our top
sports people are for her sport and in her case,
for disability sport and those with disabilities not only participating
in sport but also reaching an elite level.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
I think she's been an.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Absolute force for good and whatever she decides to do
from here, be it broadcasting or another form of career,
I get the feelings she'll be as successful as she
has been in the swimming pool.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Now damely S Charity we got on with that.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Sorry, I just got to add something this. We love this,
but I need to talk all over the top of you.
I think there's that old saying that says, if you
think you can or you think you can't, you're probably
probably right. In what she's done after that horrific accident
is a very young once she's a toddler pretty much.
Wasn't she to turn around and take that attitude and
go forget about it?

Speaker 4 (13:08):
That was the past.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
I'm looking to the future. That is extraordinarily important to me.
It shows a lot about endeavor of the human race.
So good on New Sophie for achieving that.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Indeed.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
All right, So the second of our sporting Dames well
for conversation today Dame Lisa Carrington, who, with one very
brief Instagram post, it seems, has charted a course to
her fifth Olympic Games. Her fifth Olympic Game Stars. This
is just incredible, you know what. It actually doesn't come
as a surprise, not to me anyway, because I always

(13:40):
felt as though Dame Lisa, just after Powis, thought, you
know what, I might have another four years in me.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Can I be like the fly in the ointment around this?
I love Dame Lisa Carrington wants. She's achieved. I've heard
some fantastic podcasts and her attitude now she's changed and developed.
She's an extraordinary character. I think the timing of her
comeback absolutely sucks. I think that we all knew in
the last couple of days that Dame so Pasco was retiring,

(14:10):
and to release that on the same day. I was
it deliberate? Was it accidental? It's just poor right? Am
I being too mean around this? I'm feeling bad now, Jason.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
Yeah, I think you are being too mean.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
I don't think there's any I don't think there's any
any deliberate announcement on the same day. And I get
the feeling that if Dame Lisa Carrington knew that Dame
Sophie Pasco was making her announcement today, she would have
held off.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Okay, you're right, You're completely right. I'm very sorry, but
I had to bring it up because it's been bugging me.
That's the kind of character I am. I'm a naughty boy.
I'm going to go to my room and think about
what I've done.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
No, this is what the chamber is for.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
You See, we don't have to agree on everything. I
think over our long careers, we've worked that out. We
don't have to agree with one another or with our listeners.
We just, you know, we just like to have things around.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
Now, I'm feeling bad that I've making these accusations that
Lisa was all about herself. I take it all back.
Thank you, Plany, Thank you Peny. I love you for
straightening the course. Right, let's go on to talk about
her in the company. You remember when she did the
last time. He I was like, ah, no, really bad idea.
You're going to smirch your legacy. This is not great.
Blah blah blah blah. And she said, I'll hold my

(15:16):
peddle and what she did last time, So any nasayers
out there, watch what you say.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Right, absolutely, I mean Goodness only knows you know what
her legacy will be if she can go round again
and achieve more success in Los Angeles. We've got four
years to talk about that. We've got a few weeks
before the Warriors are underway. James Fisher Harris should not
be captain of this team. I disagree with Steve Price
on this.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Wow it's brave.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
Yeah, I mean he's not in the rooms. No, it's
not that brave, not that brave. Back it up, mate,
back it up.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Why. I just think he is there and has just arrived,
and I think just needs to concentrate on being the
best possible play he can.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
Look, I know what you're going to say.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
That doesn't necessarily mean he can't be captain, but I
would just hate to think that if the Warriors get
off to anything but a perfect start, that James Fisher
Harris comes under the spotlight as captain of this team.
He you know, he clearly isn't isn't that comfortable in
the media spotlight.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
He does what he has to do.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
He's done his media and he speaks and you talk
about you talk to people inside the camps he's been
in and they say he doesn't speak much, but when
he does, you listen. I'm not sure that that ready
translates across to being a charismatic captain of the team.
You know, Mitch Barnett for me, but I know you'll
probably have a contrary review.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
No, I think, Mitch, and you look at what Steve
Price did when he came over. Even though Mitch is
not a New Zealander, He's now embedded himself in the team.
And I think maybe the ability to step into all
cultures when he climbs in and captain from that aspect
is probably quite healthy. You know what I'm saying there.

(16:56):
It's just a different angle on it and the captain.
What do you want? Do you want a conduit between
the coach and the team. Do you want a friend
of the teams? Do you want a standalone kind of guys?
It's what they want out of that. I think the
respect is there for Mitch and I like the fact
he's slightly detached from what goes on, not being a

(17:16):
man who's grown up through in his inner rugby league.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
I know you spoke to Cameron George and he made
the points this is earlier on might have him been
back into last year when Tahu Harris was unfortunately ruled out.
That a captain is more than just the guy who
wears the armband and leads the team out onto the field.
There are a lot of other responsibilities around sponsors, fans,
just media, extra stuff that you have to do. I
would just hate to see Fish James Fisher Harrison encumbered

(17:40):
by anything other than just being the best possible rugby
league player he can.

Speaker 3 (17:44):
I think you've killed me in the Champion that I'm
just going to walk away now.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
Thanks Jason, No, don't go come back to macsally. No,
don't come back because we've run out of time. We'll
see you tomorrow.
