Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast. The
start of all weekend. We love Fridays. We love the
start of a new month. Not sure why, but it's
April four. I'm Jason Pine. I love even more being
in such close proximity too.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I'm not entirely sure that Darcy Wadegrave is particularly pleased
with you coming up here from Wellington wearing a beaten
up old Hurricanes. It is football shirt Friday, so it
does make sense, and you are presenting before we carry on.
Hurricane's going to ruin the Blues chut. Let's talk about
that later on Abees, you've got U cane stop on,
(00:52):
I've got my Crusaders top on, and we're here to
talk sport and little bite sized chunks for this podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I love a bite sized chunk me absolutely looking forward
to chatting a bit of rugby with you and some
formula one the later sports stories as well. Who's our
interview this afternoon?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Ken Rutherfand makes appearance on the podcast. Today former New
Zealand skipper, as we talked the career of Gary Stead
and it's not over but tomorrow in that one day
international is technically is officially his last day in charge
of the Black Cap. So where does he go from now?
What is he given to New Zealand cricket? All that
(01:29):
more coming up with Ken Rutherford.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Surely looking forward to that. Let's get into it. In
other news, let's get underway with a look at some
of the big sports stories around at a Liam Lawson
keeping an open mind on his Formula One future as
he prepares for the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. He'll
test his racing balls car in practice today on the
familiar track of Suzuka.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
The main thing is being in a car.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
You know, I have the opportunity to prove I've along
here and that's what I will try and do, and
that's what I do every single time I get in
the car. I think things change very quickly.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
In terms of you know where my future is.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
A Try of the Season contender inside the last two
minutes has sealed it twenty four to twenty comeback NRL
League victory for host Canberra against Cronulla to open Round five,
last tackle. They've got to keep it alive at all costs.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
Bitch pact to.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Savage Savage right, Tenne chasing the bar.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Mantas and weeks practice.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Twitter and Tottenham football manager and Pasta Cooglu is prickly
after a one yearl lost to Chelsea in the Premier
League during which both teams had goals scrubbed out by Vaar.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
It's killing the game, but no one cares about that.
I think everyone loves the drama, the controversy.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I'm sure there'll be twenty four hours discussion around and
I think it's crazy Mane, It's madness, but we accept it.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
And when you accept something, I guess you have to
take a follow from it.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sports Fix with Jason Vine
and Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
And it's a warm welcome and a big hello to
former New Zealand Test skipper Ken Rutherford, is now the
CEO of Northern Districts Cricket. When he starts shortly anyway, Ken,
welcome to the podcast.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Darcy always a pleasure mate.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Great to have you on board as we look at
the career, whether it's ended or not, not entirely sure.
But tomorrow, I suppose affectually marks the last game in
charge for Gary Stead. I suppose first question is when
you look back at his career, where does he sit?
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Look He's done well.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
I'm sure his achievements will stand the test of scrutiny, Darcy,
won't they? And I think over the last couple of years,
when you look at the way cricket has evolved at
that level, and the fact that like trend Bolt and
others have decided to sort of taken more independent route
around contracts and stuff like that, the fact that stead
Stead and his cohorts will be able to retain a
(03:59):
really strong performance with a lot of new players coming
and going. Darcy, I think that's probably been a really
testing kind of twelve to twenty four mosted the last
couple of years, and he's come.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Through looking pretty good.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
I mean, this Pakistan series is probably a fair indication
of the strength and depth that all of a sudden
New Zealand cricket does seem to possess.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
It has to be very flexible as a coach in
this brave new world because of the decisions that New
Zealand cricket keep making and they are sensible ones to
keep up with the play with franchise cricket. But if
they haven't got a coach who understands and buys in,
there's no point, is there. So plainly he's been part
and party to this advance and of the course.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
You spot on and I think what you've seen the
way international cricket evolve over the last two years is
probably going to be nothing to the way it might
continue to evolve over the next two to three to
five years. I think certainly written reading between the lines,
and I think Cam Willimson was quite a during the
week we we might see international cricket similar to international soccer,
(05:05):
international football, given windows where international games are played around
club competitions or in cricket's case, the franchise competitions that
are happening.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Around the world with ever increasing frequency. So you're right.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
For administrators, it's about being flexible, agile, pretty up to
date sort of words modern words those Darcy.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
I'm still young, ken, give me a break, I'm only
in the fifties exactly.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
An instance of example of a current cricket coach at
international level who does have to be, you know, to
have a malleable approach Darcy.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
One of the hallmarks of his career and you've probably
said the same and he was opening the batting and
tweaking as well, is that he's a very calm individual
and I think seems to Ruffler's feathers. He doesn't overreact, underreact.
That is what he is. And I think having a
hand on the teller like that in cricket especially is
goal for the team because you can have rotten matches
(06:03):
and rotten series. But it never seems to bother him.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
No, it doesn't, because he's got a fairly implacable kind
of demeanor. Isn't he just to just get some on
with things and doesn't seem to suffer from the ups
and downs that more volatile characters may may suffer from. Look,
I think he's been helped by a very strong, experienced
cores of players over the full tenure of US as
(06:28):
a time of New Zealand coach Darcy, he's had a
number of well New Zealand greats to draw and hasn't
it really And I think he's given them the reins
to kind of run the side to some extent, to
a large extends, and it's not really the way it
was back and back in my day, but potentially when
the coach kind of took control and you know, Bible
Kunis was out there with the warm ups and was
(06:50):
telling you what to do and you know, hollering out orders.
It's not the modern day way. I think it's the
modern day coaching ways to very much put the responsibility
for a large part of the team's fortunes in the
hand of the in the hands of the players myselves,
and instead's been pretty good at delegating that.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I'm not retired yet. I hate to say he's going
to walk away, because I've got a feeling he might
stick around for a while. I know what the one
highlight of his career that I'll look back on. Have
you got the same?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Will that be the test chambanship would have been?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Come on?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Can?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Of course it would be.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Have to be? Would it have to be? Look? He said,
But that's only the one highlight.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
I mean, I think when I'm going to look back
and if he does, if he doesn't continue, you know,
we've probably been a bit presumptuous here Darcy and looking
back at some of the memories. But I really do
think he's done well to just to keep the ship
going a good direction, a good strong direction, and he's
blooded a lot of the good players, the players who
(07:49):
have turned out to be really good critters.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
For New Zealand. And the momentum is there.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
It's been guarded over appearance since Ben McCallen probably took
over in twenty thirteen with Mike Heessen, and there's been
very few dips over the last twelve years and his
ogn cricket.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
And if there have been, I'm not even going to
talk about it because there has been so many bumps
up and that's the nature of international cricket. Mate, you
can't win everything. As you well know, Ken love talking
cricket you mate, thanks so much for joining us here
on ZB.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Have a good one, Darcy, thank you. Sports Effects.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
The black Caps are starting to build some next generation depth.
It occurred to me the other day it's now possible
for the black Caps to field a team of players
with international experience entirely under the age of thirty. Now
Here it is, and bear in mind this is for
a white ball game. Reese Martyhoo twenty three year old
and twenty five year old Finnealeen to open. Tim Robinson
(08:43):
twenty two at first drop, then the highly experienced pair
of Reich and Ravindra who's twenty five and twenty eight
year old Glenn Phillips, followed by the freshly arrived but
hugely exciting twenty one year old Muhammed a bass what
could keeper batsman Mitchay He's twenty four and a pace
quartet Nathan Smith twenty six, Zach Folks twenty two, Ben
(09:03):
sea Is twenty seven and Willow Rourke just twenty three.
Or if you want to spin off twenty two year
old Leggy Addie Ashok. That is a pretty good team.
In fact, how do you reckon that? Go against an
over thirties team in a T twenty game. The over
thirties could be Will Young and Devin Conway, Came Williamson,
(09:24):
Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Sant,
Nicole Jamison, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy. That team would probably win,
But if it was a three or five game series,
the young Bucks would definitely be right in it. The
most salient point is that we can even choose an
under thirty side, because for a long time we haven't
(09:46):
been able to the Chamber.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Is now in session on Sportsfax.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Into the Chamber, we go to talk a couple of
the big sporting fixtures coming up over the next forty
eight hours or so. Can we start with the rugby disk?
Can we start with the team that I'm rapping today
in here with my Hurricanes jersey circa I reckon nineteen
ninety eight against the Blues. Normally, when you play a
team that is one and five, one win, five losses,
you'd go in his favorite. I just worry a bit
(10:14):
about the Blues, and for a couple of reasons, the
returning players Barrett Toy a lot too, and the desperation
that they will have tomorrow night at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
You can go a couple of ways, can't it. Desperation
can mean you unravel and unravel in a hurry because
you're putting too much on the result, and you're putting
too much I suppose micromanaging, and you can't really do that.
And I'm sure there's a lot of pressure from formerly
Stern Vern now probably freaked out Vern. It's been quite
the turn, hasn't it for Vern? I've got to stop
(10:45):
doing this, but I don't know, And the Hurricanes have
They've got some great players in really good form right now.
I mean I look at Duplicy, kid Ify, fantastic player,
really really reveling it right now. And of course you've
got Hoskins Setutu standing around and going, well, I'm still relevant.
I might go and play on the other side of
(11:05):
the world. So already there's classes, but there everywhere.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Right The loose Ford battle just fascinates me. You mentioned
duplasicrely he teams up with Peter Larkey and Brayden. You're
say that's powerful.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Well, you'll say, man, he's been in great form as well, and.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
The six Jersey too, which is not familiar to them.
But then you look over at the Blues and you say, yeah,
Hoskin Tatutu best player in Super Rugby last year, Dott
and Papa Lee, a very experienced all Black. Anton Segna
is back in the side as well. I don't know.
That just feels as though on what could be. I
don't know what the forecasters, but it was anything like
today could be a bit wet, even if it's not
that loose forward trio just appeals as quite important to me.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Now many of these guys are focusing on the here
and now you'd hope all of them and the rest
of them going. Can I be an all blackness here?
Because that fight in the loose Fords is and means
we saw it happened last year. Hoskin Setutu left out
in the cold. So there's other players out there, because
we've got other returning players, and not only from Auckland.
We've got, of course, the Chiefs weapons, the Crusaders weapons,
(12:01):
the much maligned Harlanders who have had a rotten old
time of it so far this year, albeit by only
a couple of points each time around.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
The jeopardy continues, pint it it does, The jeopardy continues.
I hope we can burn Vern tomorrow night at Eden Park.
Actually didn't she Well, just do a very quick tipping
comp Chiefs Reads tonight for you.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
I didn't think you can pick anything. This is what's
so good about the competition.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
That's what I'm asking you to tell me.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Chiefs Reads thought, well, you got to go Chiefs merely
because of the home advantage, and they know how close
they are. What about Moana and the Tars Tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
I've got Wina pacificap based entirely on what happened last weekend.
They beat the Crusaders. The warr tasks were terrible against
my Hurricanes. I've got more in a pacifica your Crusaders
in Fiji. They never went over there, Will they tomorrow?
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Well not, honestly, it's thinking hot. They've got the best
crowds that are absolutely and the Crusaders are we absolutely
hurting after what happened last week. They didn't just get beaten,
they got beaten up. So maybe that response back from
that beating might just give them the nudge. But again,
I've got no money to put on it, and if
I did, I wouldn't. Anyway, We've talked Blues Hurricanes, you reckon.
(13:10):
The Hurricanes have got it, but I'd say the Blues
have probably got a little more resting on it and mean.
But again, how do you split this? What about force
Highlanders go on? The Heartland is traveling away? I think
that's the only one we can go. You know what,
I think the home team might have the advantage just
the tyranny of distance.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Absolutely right. And I want the Highlanders to win because
I want them to recapture the form that early on
in the season had their fans so excited. I just
don't know whether we don't know whether it's going to
happen out west tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Some highlanders are listening because they go, hey, hold my
beer and they'll do it out west of an evening.
And this is the competition so far, nobody knows and
that's what we want.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
There's no way you can pick five from five one weekend,
let alone weekend on weekend. On weekend, Hey, Japan Formula
one Grand Prix across the weekend. I'm so so curious
to see how this all.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
I'm going to say excited, but you've said curious.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
I am excited, but I'm I'm just I can't wait
to see what happens. And I don't know that there's
any way of predicting what will happen with Sonoda and
with Lawson. Is there.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Well, there's a thought process that says that all of
the work that has been done, or the data that's
been taken away from Liam's first two races, which weren't great,
they might apply that data to the Red Bull and
try and make it slightly easier to drive for Yuki. Now,
I don't know how much truth is in that, but
they obviously need something because the second driver needs to
(14:40):
score points to pick up that championship. So I think
they'll pull out all the stops. Honda, it's their home track,
it's at Suzuka. No Japanese F one driver has even
one of Formula one rates, let alone at Suzuka. You
talk about pylon. For Yuki, it's huge, whereas Lim's like, mate, whatever,
I got a different car to be easy to drive.
(15:01):
I'm just got to have a home bro. See what happens.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
As I was coming in today, I was thinking, I
need to ask you this question, and I'm going to
I'm going to drop it on you. Possible to tell
who's the better driver between Sonoda and Lawson until they
drive the same car, right, Yeah, if they were in
the same car, it doesn't matter if it's a red
bull or a racing ball. Who is your gut feel
on the better driver.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
And you're looking at a fully breathed Formula One car
to do that. Yes, I mean, obviously I'm a big
fan of Lim, but let's face it, Yuki Snoda has
had a lot more time in Formula One, a lot
more time in the seats, and based on that alone,
I would suggest he would have it over Liam Lawson,
and I can hear jaws dropping all over the place
(15:40):
right now. But that's just experience. It is massive in
those race cars. So I've got to lean toward Yuki currently.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
All right, No, good to know. I wasn't sure, you see,
I didn't know, but you're right. The experience and everyone
you talk to, it just takes time. Liam Lawson wasn't
given it. Yuki Sinoda's had it. He'll probably get a
bit of it this year. So yeah, whatever happened.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
And that's why you get Andy Carr because basically they're
driving the same car, so you can find out who
the best drivers is. At the moment. Alex alone, he's
killing them, but they're not running for another couple of weeks,
I don't think. So there's that there. I've had my
farm with race cars, your farm with football. The Phoenix
are out the back door. Terrible season by anyone's reckoning,
but not Awkland. We've discussed this already. The pressure is
(16:24):
on them, but I get the feeling the way they're
playing that they'll carry that just beautifully. I think with
Kurrika they actually thrive on that. Is that right?
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (16:34):
No, what you see is exactly that they whatever cliche
you want to use, we walk towards the pressure, we
embrace it, we run at it. They did, we headed
into the back of the oppositions net. Yeah, all that
you know if you if you go down to Tintaxia,
if they win tomorrow afternoon evening five o'clock kick off,
they'll go ten points clear of Western United and put
(16:55):
the ball in Western United's court. It's quite possible. I
think I mentioned this on the podcast yesterday that Auckland
FC could win the Premiers Plate next weekend depending on results,
they'll win it, I think does. I don't think there's
anything you know to suggest that they will drop their
bundle at this time of the season, not with Steph
Caricker in charge anyway, and that excellent roster of players.
I think they'll beat Western Sydney tomorrow put to the
(17:16):
pressure on Western Unite. The big one, of course, is
that if you win the Premier's Plate, you host the
Grand Final. If you make it, no one's going to
want to come to Mount Smart for a Grand Final
and the a leak and can tell you that.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
So what happens if they do get into prime position
to win the plate and it's actually sealed off. What
happens with the players over the next few games. How
does Carriker balance experience and guys needing a run before
big knockout games versus protecting themselves so having their best
players fresh. Now that's something I'm interested in.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Here's what I reckon Steve Cariker would say if you
asked him that question, and one of us will probably
get the opportunity to well, you may well as well.
I've heard it on your show quite often as well,
you know. I think what he would say is that
momentum is important, and that with so few games really
in the finals, you know, they'll only have to play
three games at the finished top. They'll have a home
and away semi and a final if they it, so
(18:08):
that's only three more games. I think he'll want his
team firing all the way through. Having said that, you
can't predict injuries, you can't predict suspensions, guys getting sent
off or whatever sort.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Of that, those outside influences, you think they'll pretty much
run the same team right up until the last dance.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
I would yeah, and I think he will too. I
think he's got his best eleven with a few tinkerings
here and there. I think he can write down eight
of the eleven every week, and I think that's what
he'll do, and that's probably what he'll do against the Westerns.
And you want us tomorrow afternoon roll out the big guns,
and I fully expect them to get the win. Hey,
what a weekend in prospect. We've got curiosity, We've got
(18:46):
stern turn and burn vern't We've got turning and burning
on the on the tracks of the Japanese Grand Prix again, dus,
where are we supposed to look? How are we supposed
to set ourselves up?
Speaker 3 (18:59):
We just need to AI ourselves and have a couple
of Jason Pines in the home and a couple of
Darcy water Graves to pour axially hot on. I don't
even joke about AI. That might put it out of
a job. So we stop talking about this now and
get out.
Speaker 2 (19:11):
I think we should out of here.
