Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncie Wildegrave
from News Talk ZB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Clayton McMillan that joins the show now and now, says
the head coach of the All Blacks fifteen. The team
are going on a two match Northern tour, Jamie McIntosh,
the Whoppers on board, David Hill and Corey Jane join them. Clayton,
congratulations on the role. You must be very pleased and
that's quite the phalanx of old players you've got joining you, mate,
(00:36):
Yeah mate.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah, no. Rep to continue to be involved in the
AB fifteen program has been a great experience the last
couple of years and the she get to lead it alongside.
I mean that you just talked about some real characters
a New Zealand rugby, but excellent coaches as well.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Predominantly, what is your KPI? What do you need to
achieve in this role if you look back at it
and go okay, come the end of it, however long
it lasts. What do I need to have done to
say this is a success.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
We want to win. We want to go away and
win both games and do that with do it with
a better class. But I guess the bigger rematters around
exposing coaches, management and players to a different style of
rugby and different rugby conditions and just growing that the
ability of our next tier of talented players to be
(01:33):
able to make that next step up to the All
Bs of required.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
How closely do you work with the likes of Scott
Robertson and other coaches in the All Blacks stable?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, pretty close. Obviously they've been busy in the first
part of their international campaign, but spent the week downe
in Wellington prior to the second Burslot Test and so
immerse myself in their environment. There will be some some
common language in some common rugby sort of ip that'll
(02:08):
be sheard and we're certainly connected around the selection piece
last week. Ultimately the squad will be selected by them,
and our job as maybe fifteen coaches is to keep
a close eye on those guys that are running around
an NPC not currently in the All Black squad, an
offerer and an opinion around who is currently playing well.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
So those guys Clayton have got the work hand, but
you can still put your teen cents worth and as
far as who you see should be involved in that,
but you're not dominant.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, that's right, yep. I think we put two teams
together and I think probably eighty to ninety percent of
it was consistent, So really only talking about a handful
of players that we think deserve an opportunity to be there,
and then it's just a case of Scott and his
crew deciding whether they fit in a larger picture of
the all back frame.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Munster and Georgia two quite different games, I'm sure they are.
What are your expectations around both of these fixtures, apparently
what they're going to bring to the floor, to the
pitch and what you're going to take back to them.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I will start with ourselves, well, will play a traditional
New Zealand style. We always like to express ourselves and
back our skill. I think it's a point of difference
for us, and we'll have a number of players that
obviously fresh out of NPC campaigns. But what we anticipate
up there is Munthst have got a really proud tradition
(03:38):
of playing international teams in New Zealand teams and having
some success, so they'll be midway through their campaigns so
they'll be fit ready. You know, they had a lot
of cohesion, clear understanding of how they want to play
the game in front of a sold out stadium, so
that's a tough way to start an opportunity relish. I
(04:01):
think Georgians have probably proved over the last twelve to
twenty four months to be a team that is really
on the rise and international rugby. A lot of their
players play up in Europe and France, very forward orientated pacts.
A huge challenge for the young men that will go
and represent the AIRB fifteen.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Plainly, as you said, Clay McMillan, you want to win.
That's that's first and foremost. But when you look at
these young men that you're taking away on tour, you
probably can't overestimate the important this has around the ability
to go on tour, to understand what it means to
be at that level, represent New Zealand, go through the
process of representing at that level. This is enormously important,
(04:46):
isn't it.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
I think it's a huge factor. It's not something that
we get to do often. So when you get the opportunity,
it's one to be embraced and relished and for the
young men that are selected, it will be a big
learning experience, an on field learning experience but also all
the little things that come with putting on a back
(05:10):
jersey and representing your country on the other side of
the world. A lot of expectation, as we all know,
and our challenge would be to embrace it and to
walk towards the challenges.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
And containing their exuberance and excitement, because these are guys
who are on the cusp of possibly representing at the
highest level and you who, I suppose, rope that in
make sure the task at hand is achieved. Yeah, sure,
have dreams, but don't get too excited at such a
strange stage in their careers, isn't it, Clayton.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah, I guess that it'll be. It'll be a good
indication that they aren't far away from all back selection
with selection and this team, and that's a big believer
that the team does well, individuals will prospers us. It's
really about the squad coming together, understanding very clearly what
(06:05):
we want to get out of it, keeping that game
really simplified so people can go out clear and their
thinking men just go out and execute and bring me
a talent to the to the four.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
And finally, Clayton mcnallan, of course a head coach of
the Chiefs, a super rugby Pacific team. You've been around
the tracks for quite a while. Now where does this
role sit in your move toward the very top of
the tree. You still got aspirations of all black coaching
at some stage.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Oh yeah, Look, I've always been a big believer that
you just, you know, worry about what's directly in front
of you, and if you do a good job there,
then hopefully that will be recognized by somebody somewhere and
you get afforded opportunity. So worked, it's worked well for me.
I just really really am just focused on pulling this
(06:59):
team together and giving a good account of ourselves and
and the same with the Chiefs, you know, Like I'm
passionate about that team and been close, but you're so
far so fire keeps burning and like I said, just
keep tuning over and working hard and and our opportunities
will open up in the future, I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Yeah, you focus on the controllables and meet the bloody media,
throw stuff at the wall and see what happens. Clayt mcmeellan, mate,
thanks very much for your time. Really looking forward to
both of those exchanges. They'll be ripped Snorter, A packed
house at months to mate. You couldn't ask for much more.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Thank you, Yeah, thanks, Darcy. Cheers.
